In return, The Eagles gave a shout out to Steely Dan in "Hotel California". The lyrics "stabbed it with their STEELY knives..." refer to their band name. That's just pretty damn cool! 🎵❤✌

A "steely dan" was a popular metal dildo at the time. FYI, this band is their own genre - there are NO others like them. Once you get into the Steely Dan catalog, you'll find out that it isn't just another "rabbit hole"....it's a mine shaft, with many, many surprising side tunnels - rock, jazz, funk, reggae, and much more. Enjoy the journey - don't bother leaving bread crumbs, because you might never want to get out.
I could list at least 30 tracks that will amaze you with their quality and diverse sounds, but posters below have done a great job of that. One they missed, which is one of my favorites is "Haitian Divorce". Have a great ride.

Steely Dan is a duo group formed by members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They got the name from a "Sex Toy"!! They would bring in musicians for one solo on one song, because they were perfectionists on the production side. They were considered to be the most polished music producers of all thime, and it shows in the details when you allow yourself to dissect the music and instruments involved. But it drove the record company execs crazy because of the time and money it would take for them to complete one song, not to mention the whole album! I jammed out to these guys all through high school and since then too. One of my favorite groups of all time!

SD is the biggest rabbit hole ever. 60+ songs from 1972 to 1980 and every single one is great. Not kidding.

Steely Dan is the only band I know of where every song is good. You can tell effort was put into each one. There are no filler tracks on any of their 9 studio albums.

I always felt that Steely Dan had a methodic melody to their sound that kept you in an hypnotic stage.

Tropical is one way to say it, but the term you're looking for Calypso.

All SD songs should be listened to using a lyric video. This song is about addiction and how we humans find comfort in repetitive behaviors, even if they're negative ones. Try "Peg", "Reelin' In The Years", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Dirty Work", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", "Black Cow", "Kid Charlemagne" and only about 100 others because there's really no such thing as a bad SD song.

I couldn't disagree with this more. I mean for one thing, even if you want to put that much emphasis on lyrics, lyric videos on youtube are notoriously terrible at getting the lyrics right. So they're usually not even worth what they're trying to accomplish. But beyond that, there is so much to get lost in with the music in Steely Dan, that its not even necessary to know what the song's about to appreciate the music. I mean its music - not poetry. Don't get me wrong, I love what SD does lyrically too and its definitely worth taking the time to look into the lyrics. But watching lyric videos on your first listen through with the music is probably the last thing you should do.. It draws your attention to the screen and away from the audio in your ears. I strongly encourage people to just close their eyes and listen to music as it is initially, and then go back and look into the lyrics on subsequent listens.

@@moonlitegram agree wholeheartedly. I always jammed out to the vibes on this song many a time. Only after watching RUclips reactions being surprised by the lyrics made me curious and finally check out the lyrics and meaning.

Yes. Glamour Profession is a trip to a different time and place. Try that if not next very soon. They might have been at their peak in GP. Or in Babylon Sisters. Both from the Gaucho album, my favorite however my favorite SD song is Haitian Divorce from the Royal Scam. That talk box is awesome. The story is interesting as well. I hate divorce but I love that tune. "Dolly back, fade to black"
It's like you're watching a movie in Times Square in the late sixties at three a.m.
