With Steely Dan you will get Jazz, Funk, Blues, Rock and everything in between. This song is titled "Do it Again". In the first verse a man kills another for stealing his water. Though he is caught, he is not convicted so he goes out and does it again. In the second verse a man falls for a two timing woman, and though she breaks his heart he does it again. Verse three is about a gambler who though he claims he's done with gambling, finds himself back in Vegas doing it again. Enjoy one of the greatest bands ever. You won't find a bad song.

I find that people who love funk, when they hear something that is not at all funky, but nevertheless pleasing to their ear, declare the song to be "funky" when they review it. I've even heard Yes descibed as a "funky" band, which is about as far from the truth as anything can be. "Do it Again" is pretty clearly a cool fusion of jazz and latin music.

It warms my heart to see a young man digging a song I heard when I was 15, listening late at night to a portable radio playing Chicago AM rock stations.
Everything you said, all of your analysis, was spot on.
Incidentally, since mentioned it, the band chose its name from a mention of a steam powered vibrator William Burrows called the "Steely Dan" in his novel Naked Lunch (published in 1959 - two years after I was born).

See this band dude. This is why I don't like a lot of modern music. They took their time to make a good song. Today's music is called McDonald's music to me. Meaning they make it fast. And they spill a bunch of stuff. I don't want to hear. Because I wasn't raised in the projects. Why did old R&B turn into that? I like Earth, wind and fire. I like the Ohio players. I like the spinners. these guys are nerds? They know music. I like sly Stone He writes some beautiful lyrics. And I don't like hearing about people shooting each other.I hate violence I just focus on paradise brother If you read.
The word. You can see why things have changed.

Steely Dan is lmusic made about and for what it sounds like: kinda skeevy bachelor grooves, impeccably put together and stylish but underneath super cynical and definitely predatory intentions, that you can’t help but admit sounds like a lot of fun as you get into their convertible with the high end sound system and he tells you anecdotes about the recording process the whole way to the restaurant lol.

Steely Dan, after their initial run, were the duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They employed a number of highly regarded studio session musicians on their albums and rotated them around as they pleased. Every single one is/was a top notch musician. Basically, Donald and Walter came up with the groove and chord progressions, lyrics and melodies, and then had several studio musicians record something to go along with it, and they picked what they liked best, including these VERY tasty solos. They had some of the most creative songs during their heyday. Their fusion of different styles is what sets them apart and really gives them a unique sound that no other band has.

I believe each verse is a seperate story. The first is a killer who gets caught abd nearly killed, but is let go. Dedpite nearly dying, returns to crime. The second versd is about a guy who gets cheated on as she sleeps with his best friebd. He retaluates by sleeping with a younger woman who makes him unhapoy snd he runs back to the woman who cheated on him. The third is a gsmblingvaddict in denial of being an addict.
Steely Dan released 7 studio albums, broke up for over a decade and released two more albums. The first seven are extraordinary, containing about 5 total mediocre songs. The rest us good to perfect. I'm not that familiar with the two later albums.
You may recognize parks of Kid Charlemagne and Black Cow. This is a deep and rewarding rabbit hole.
