A lot of recordings made between 1945 and 1956 with the word “Boogie” in the song/instrumental title can legitimately lay claim to being “the first Rock music recording”. From my own music listening history , three recordings stand out: 1945’s “Guitar Boogie”, by Arthur “Guitar Boogie” Smith (which was re-released nationally by the MGM Records label), the 1949 instrumental single, “Centipede Boogie”, by Chet Atkins (Atkins listened to some Jump Blues music in Atlanta, Georgia, and couldn’t wait to return to New York City to record the music; he recorded the record at RCA’s Atlanta, Georgia recording studio), and the 1952 Meteor Records song, “I Believe”, by Elmore James.

There was lots of pain but the difference is we knew kids needed fun with each other we need happy upbeat music and activities. Most of all no Internet to constantly tell you to be angry - feel bad - we are inundated with bad vibe and hatred. Kids , young people and adults need places to get together and have fun . We used to avoid people who were Downers or Buzz Kills. Those that no matter the situation they want to make you think about the worst . Peace ☮️

The first Rock song featured in a popular movie "Blackboard Jungle". In the theaters, rowdy and aggressive teens would start dancing during the opening credits. In 1950s America this was like a modern "mosh-pit" breaking out in family theater, and police were sometimes called. "Blackboard Jungle" was about a tough high school where "juvenile delinquents" threatened the established order. Although the film is sympathetic to the Adult Teachers (played by "known" actors), a NEW teen audience was shocked/thrilled to see knife-wielding youths threatening and beating their teachers. Early "Rock" had a tough side.

Things were more social, more face to face.

I got to witness the beginning of Rock-a-Billy, transforming into Rock & Roll and finally Rock. From the late '50s - '60s and '70s.

I'm 75 now (76 soon). This seems pretty mild, but consider before rock and roll started our parents (if they even listened to music) listened to ballads. Not anything this up tempo.

Pulp are so good, so different to everything else and the lyrics and meaning behind the song is searing. Rich kids pretending to be poor because they think it's cool but will never walk a real day in those shoes. Common People refers to poor working class people from council estates and the like, which the girl in the song wants to pretend to be for a little while but as Jarvis points out "you could call your daddy and he would end it all", implying that she's playing at it. The real "common people" can see thru this and would laugh at her stupidity.

This song with Chris is so hard! Chris is trying so hard to stay up with Chester cause the were better then friends! both Chester and Chris had the other as godfather to their kids! They were basically brothers! And Chris was trying so hard to make Chester proud here!

A lot of wonderful comments here. I just want to add: The kids are represented as cupids, because by nature they're truly spreading nothing but love. And at the end of the video these exact innocent love-beings are being sacrificed (at the cross), screaming in pain because they were killed in a war of adults, who seem to have forgotten about love (the love of Mother Mary in fact, whose son was sacrificed for the sins of menkind - a central aspect in Christianity of course which both, catholics and protestants, refare to).

This song was the first rock song to be played in a movie, "Blackboard Jungle" which is about a teacher dealing with a multi-racial classroom. Great film! The 50's acts were revived in the 70's thanks to the TV series "Happy Days" which started with this song until they made their own theme song 🎧 💓 🎶

You asked 2 interesting questions. If there was no Rock & Roll? Well, Big Band and Jazz were very big before Rock. I remember listening to my Grandpa's Big Band and Jazz and it was very cool. People danced to that music too. If there was no Rock, I think music would have evolved anyway into something into something more energetic that may resemble modern music in many ways. After all, Rock came from the music that came before it, Big Band, Jazz, Soul, Gospel, Ragtime, Country, Western, Swing, Boogie Woogie, Folk, all those musical forms contributed to Rock and Roll. I' Gen X and I think a key reason why life was more "fun" back then (I would say pre-2000s) is because we had to be social. There was no Internet. Dancing was a major past time for young people. We had to go out to shop, see movies, buy music, clothes, eat out, and it was more fun to all those things with your friends. You had to go out to meet people. You could meet people at the clubs, or the news stand, book or record store, restaurant, at the mall, almost anyplace, so getting out of the house and out there to be seen was very important.

I think it would be dominated by country music and gospel music maybe blues and blue grass

Bill Haley & His Comets were one of the first rock & roll bands. "Rock Around The Clock" was their biggest hit but they had other hits in the 50's such as "Crazy Man, Crazy", "Shake, Rattle & Roll", "See You Later, Alligator" etc.

This was recorded the day after I was born, so to some folk, I'm a day older than Rock and Roll

This was considered to be the first rock and roll song. This is the one that got it all started. You would love “American Graffiti”. It’s full of 50s rock and roll music. It’s a movie that was made in 1973. I feel like rock and roll died with the turn of the century.
