What do you use as reference? Steely Dan are well known everywhere, especially among musicians. Non-musician friends my age are hit or miss, but we're only in our early 20s. When I studied music, EVERYONE knew and loved the Dan. Didn't matter if you were 15 or 75, working or studying at that school, they were very looked up to. One of my biggest inspirations for sure, and my all time favorite band.
Their first single. How do you come out and release this song as your first single? It's like saying "hey we are here, get ready for some serious stuff."
The first song on their first album. People freaked out. Nobody was making records like this. It was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with music in all the years since, and it will never end...

Please do a reaction video for some YES songs. Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround, I've Seen All Good People, Heart Of The Sunrise.....all are great places to start! Love the videos, keep them coming!
Congrats on having impeccable taste. So many of your generation either have no idea this music exists or would not give it a second listen. I made sure my kids, now 24 and 20, grew up knowing all sorts of music and now they like some from their own generation too but are super in tune with music of the past. Incidentally Steely Dan is music of my parents' generation, but I grew up on it as well and is one of my all-time favorites as well.
Dude, you have one of my absolutely FAVORITE Shows on RUclips! Keep on Rollin’. These Guys are one of the Groups who got me into Jazz. My 1st Jazz Album was Bitches Brew, that I bought by mistake, mixing Miles up with Buddy Miles. I freaked out on that and took off from there. THEN I found The Legendary Stockholm Concert. The greatest Album of all Time.
The best description I EVER heard to describe Steely Dan's music was one word... "Complex". The music is so deep and intricate. Every sound has a purpose.
You likely know that the Dan's recordings are frequently used by live sound engineers to set up their systems. Steely Dan production always emphasized mic choice and placement and avoided the use of EQ as much as possible, making their recordings something of a reference for clarity and purity.
Dude, your reaction within the first few bars - priceless. That's exactly what I thought when I heard this song again with a fresh appreciation for musical talent.
Unfortunately it ended in the 80s! Todays musicianship just isn't up to par with these giants. There's just a few like John Mayer who is a great Lyricist and guitar player.. Ed sheeran... Maybe CW Blake Shelton. (Gods country) gives him a pass. Lol.but no Steely Dan. Chicago. Bozz .. Eagles.Seger. just a bunch of hippty hoppity tunes... But ty Utube for the great library of music we can access!
One of those songs that you specifically remember hearing as a child (my dad's radio). I was age 4 when I first heard it, and it's my favorite Steely Dan song today.
Love watching your reaction to Steely Dan. Watching you is like I'm looking in the mirror at myself about 35 years ago. Thank you Jamel. It reminds what it felt like when I fell in love with this band. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE watch the video of The Royal Scam w/lyrics. It is sad and haunting. When I deeply listened to this song several years ago, it stuck with me for a couple of weeks.
Jamel/Jamal... Your reactions are priceless. You're doin a fantastic job as well as a service to all of us that LOVE GREAT MUSIC. Keep it Up. Rock On! Peace
Grew up on this- love it to this day. My father's favorite band. RIP. EDIT- after a minute of the intro, "I'm done" had me on the floor! Undeniable kings of groove.
One of the greatest songs ever in my opinion. It has everything. Lead guitar is amazing. Lyrics and just the sound and different instruments. Solid Gold my brother's.
The genius of Steely Dan is that they were secretly a jazz band all along. They just managed to sneak jazz in as pop.
rock lmao pop means popular and steely dan are far from it
Yup
Mateo Membrila :They were popular in bars and clubs all over the world in the seventies.
@@mateomembrila7115 Look at their list of singles and their chart performance.

Steely Dan is one of the best bands ever. There’s just no room for debate on this.
No room at all
Absolutely no room

They were a fantastic recording band , masters of the studio. Performing band? They were good, not great.
Yessss!!!
I am 68 years old and I feel like I am listening to these classics with a friend.
Steely Dan are probably the most underrated band fro their era.
They really are.
Definitely one of them. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Talking Heads, The Post-Northern years of The Beatles closer to their breakup.
On the UK side i'd say Roxy Music, New Zealands Split Enz hardly gets any love.

I'm so thankful for you Jamal... at 64 yrs old it's beautiful to see grooving to the outstanding music that I grew up with. You're truly a blessing
I'm also 64. I agree with you 100%.

Truly a power move
The first song on their first album.

They were huge perfectionists in the studio, almost to a fault.
This will always be the ultimate bad-ass Steely Dan track

I remember driving my 69 chevelle ss while listening to this 8 track smoking a joint back in 74. Great times indeed.🤪🤪🤪👍👍🎸🎸

Same here. I first heard them when I was 14 years old and my musical appreciation immediately went into overdrive.

Agreed
Said it million times, the two most technically gifted musicians ever, and the genius support musicians
Walter Becker was one of America’s greatest guitarists and musical genius, RIP.
His solo albums Eleven Tracks of Whack and Circus Money are pretty great. Highly recommended.
Fagan is the John Lennon, Becker is the McCartney
Fagan is the soul of the collaboration, and by far the biggest contribution to the musical sound
Denny Dias on sitar deserves some credit here too!
I want to party with him when I get to the other side
You'll never get this class of music again.
Absolutely!! Never again!!!! Jammmmm!!!!

This song. Holy 🐄. It’s iconic. He’s so darn awesome. This is when music was true music. Underrated for sure!
Please do a reaction video for some YES songs. Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround, I've Seen All Good People, Heart Of The Sunrise.....all are great places to start! Love the videos, keep them coming!
Starship Trooper!
@@Snookyooz ST has such terrific changeups between its 3 parts! What a supreme creation.
Yikes, no Yes yet? Oh, you definitely gotta go there!
@@Snookyooz Or "Leavin"!"
Yes!
When I listen to this song it makes me feel like the coolest dude within a 12 miles radius.
And Fagen was only 24 when they did this album I believe
Steely Dan is my favorite band. I’m not even close to 30. Lol
MaseratiMerrick im 15 lmao im so glad my parents have a great taste in music
Bless you young lad. You give us hope!

I agree and I’m not close to 30 either. But on the other side.
I'm 70. I remember when they hit the sceen! Steely Dan was way ahead of the time. Classic & tight group.
One of their most hypnotic songs! And best!
Once you discover Steely Dan, there’s no going back. As smooth as it gets.
🎸👏🏻😎
Indeed
The best description I EVER heard to describe Steely Dan's music was one word... "Complex". The music is so deep and intricate. Every sound has a purpose.
Just from the engineering perspective, this was an extraordinary first album
You likely know that the Dan's recordings are frequently used by live sound engineers to set up their systems. Steely Dan production always emphasized mic choice and placement and avoided the use of EQ as much as possible, making their recordings something of a reference for clarity and purity.
Yep, it's one I use when running up a strange pa system. When I started spectrum analysers were a fantasy for the average live rig.🌝
Dude, your reaction within the first few bars - priceless. That's exactly what I thought when I heard this song again with a fresh appreciation for musical talent.
The Music of the 70s was a whole universe of ideas and feelings and opening the windows...
If I had to listen to only one song the rest of my life, it would be "Do it Again" It's that good
Lol. Aptly titled song.
One of those songs that you specifically remember hearing as a child (my dad's radio). I was age 4 when I first heard it, and it's my favorite Steely Dan song today.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone appreciate Steely Dan.
Probably my favourite Steely Dan song , fell in love with it straight away.
I'm pretty sure this is the first song of theirs i ever heard, because I loved this song without knowing who sang it.
The 60's -70's were the shiznit for muzac, That's what I'm saying.
Thank you
YESSSSSSSSS
And 80's if you wanna cherry pick
One of the greatest songs ever in my opinion. It has everything. Lead guitar is amazing. Lyrics and just the sound and different instruments. Solid Gold my brother's.
Your love of music is infectious ! Music is what brings people of all backgrounds together .. peace and love to you for what you do bro !
You fall into this Dan world, you’re in there for years. It’s a great thing.
