No, Jesus is a reference to a baseball player. As in, “Jose is one of the best players ever, but Jesus just came up from the minors and bats .150 - he usually rides the bench. Jose is Hallo of Fame material, but Jesus is just alright.”
Some German catholic churches tried some gospel and rock in the 1970's/80s , but I tell you it was not good. At least not the churches I had to go to. It was cringe worthy for me to have to listen to it and watch it. Some German white people trying real hard to have rhythm and soul and the rest of the parish just sat there with unbelief in their eyes. I never liked being in church because I didn't understood the concept, but on these occasions I really wanted to leave.
As time goes by it has been made stunningly clear to me how silly with greatness and innovation the music was when I was growing up. What's wonderful is, with you, I get to rediscover these jewels of my lifetime of listening to great, great music.
As a side note, the Doobie Brothers were finally inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame last May 2, 2020 after being first eligible way back in 1996. I just hope it went through despite the pandemic. Congratulations!! This was long overdue!
I've really been enjoying your channel. And re "Jesus Is Just Alright With Me"... it started off as a gospel song in 1966 by a black gospel group! Then the Byrds covered it. But the Doobies took it to a whole new level, adding that slow breakdown in the middle that you enjoyed so much (so do I!). The intersection of black spirituals and gospel w/ rock and roll is well documented... of course, Led Zep covered Blind Willie Johnson's "Nobody's Fault But Mine." Rollings Stones hit the gospel vibe numerous times (!!), including "Salt of the Earth" (a prayer/praise of "hardworking people"), the classic "You Got to Move," and the astonishingly beautiful "I Just Want to See His Face." The latter begins w/ a slow, almost aimless jam, and resolves into a cry to God. O Mick, we dinna know you had it in ya! Want something totally weird from 1967? Try a song that ended up in the movie "Easy Rider." "Gloria," by the Electric Prunes. I can really go on this topic if more is desired...
One of the best songs they ever recorded!!! I knew you'd love it when they broke it down. I was laughing as that part was coming up and said, "oh I can't wait to see his reaction to this!!!" 🤣👍
I felt the same way back then! Way before "Contemporary Christian" music was cool. And to this day... NO ONE has written a song that speaks to the Power of Jesus Christ. This song Rocks!!!
I once got stopped going 55 in a 35 grooving to this song ... when I explained it the cop, I was let off with a warning. Lucky he was a Doobies fan. This song will make you catch the spirit though.
Hello Jamel, I love your reaction videos. I am a 71 year old woman from the San Francisco Bay Area. The Dobbie Brothers were a band for a good number of years before Michael McDonald joined them for a portion of their journey. The Dobbie’s got their start playing in biker bars around San Jose; Michael McDonald, who has an amazing voice, kind of smoothed them out, took away some of their rawness and edge, and pushed them more into the mainstream. This song was on an early album, “Toulouse Street” and their original lead singer, Tom Johnston, sang the lead.
So great to experience all these songs that I have loved for so long through someone younger's eyes. Thank you sir for taking the time create these reaction vids!

If you want to hear some excellent “Funk,” check out Talking Heads, “Take Me to the River”
Yasssss take me to the river will knock your socks off. Any David Bryne will do thank you my friend.
The Talking Heads version of "Take Me To The River" was based on the Foghat version, which is also excellent.
You should start on the Eagles sometime soon. I think you’ll really enjoy them. Thanks for this song!
I tried but they are really bad with copyright
J, thank you a millions for doing this very special song. Dobbie’s forever!
I love how each transition in this performance draws a tremor of appreciation from your core.
"If they played this in church, I might be there every Sunday". Ya, me too! Never heard this in the Catholic church!
They don't play this in the LDS Church either :)
If Pope Francis keeps bringing fresh spirit we might hear this in Church sometime... We can hope, anyway!
Guys!!!! Check out Third Day!!!
Me either!
Doobie Brothers/It Keeps You Runnin'
Oh yesss!
Amen brother! I'm sooo glad you got to listen to this one. Watching your reaction was phenomenal. This song is all soul baby.
It was a great time.....fusion of blues, soul, and rock. Brought people together.
A NEW enjoyment for you! Blood, Sweat and Tears - "You've Made me so Very Happy" (I'm so glad you came in to my life)
Gospel, Blues and Rock n Roll all blended together to make a great version of this song.
And soul
YES our church did this at our church!! They are all on this recording. DID WE NOT TELL YOU THIS WAS GREAT!?!?!?
So happy you're discovering and featuring music I grew up with. I was a teenager when this came out. Yep, still listening.
Listen to the Doobie Brothers song Another Park, Another Sunday. My favorite track of theirs.
You have to do "Long Train Running" by The Doobie Brothers. INCREDIBLE song. Might be your favorite after you hear it.
That solo bit rips me up every time - for more than forty years - every time.
Man! I was rocking out to this in the ,70's, all of it, yeah man
One of the best songs they ever recorded!!! I knew you'd love it when they broke it down. I was laughing as that part was coming up and said, "oh I can't wait to see his reaction to this!!!" 🤣👍
They were brave to sing about Jesus in those days. I admired them for it.
I felt the same way back then! Way before "Contemporary Christian" music was cool. And to this day... NO ONE has written a song that speaks to the Power of Jesus Christ. This song Rocks!!!
No that was all Tom Johnston early days no McDonald then.
No, the credits on the record say it was Patrick Simmons who sang the lead... :)
As a lifelong wannabe drummer I always appreciate a great percussion section, the Doobies is one of the best EVER!
So great to experience all these songs that I have loved for so long through someone younger's eyes. Thank you sir for taking the time create these reaction vids!
Love you Brother
And this song is total fire
Jesus Loves us all

Love this channel.I'm 70 y.o. and every time I listen to you this music makes me feel young again. Then I get up for a drink and my joints remind me it's only temporary.
