Lost my faith years ago, but recently I began to pray. I think that is what is wrong with the world today. Not enough prayers. I was surprised by the results.
This was originally a gospel song written in 1966 by Art Reynolds who had a gospel group. It was later covered by The Byrds who refashioned it with a rock beat. Then the Doobies had a top 40 hit with it in 1973. Great song, interesting history.

This was a concert sing-a-long when I saw the Doobie Brothers in the early 70's. I can't testify to what the band or the audience believed, but everyone sang it like they meant it, and for sure, nobody was offended!
The Doobies headlined my first concert back in the mid 70s in Asheville. They opened with this and we sang our hearts out. To this day, He’s still my best friend! Be blessed

The bridge was sung by Patrick Simmons who wrote and sang many of the slower-tempo tunes of early Doobie Brothers like "Black Water," "South City Midnight Lady," and "I Cheat the Hangman" (all RECOMMENDED). He also played the guitar solo in the bridge and is a master at finger-picking guitar. Tom Johnston is known for their many uptempo tunes like "Listen to the Music," "Long Train Runnin'," and "China Grove," and he plays the majority of the guitar solos. Just a little FYI concerning early (pre-Michael McDonald) Doobie Brothers.

Jesus is more than just all right to me! I grew up in a legalistic church and I was scared to death of God. Decades later, Jesus
entered my heart and showed me grace. The difference was like night and day! If you believe, you either have a religion or
you have a relationship with Jesus. There's no in between. Religion is cold comfort when times get rough.

Seen them jn concert in the 80's, luckily I seen quite a few great concerts. I usually won a lot of concert tickets on the radio. My favorite tickets i won was 4 tickets to Rolling Stones in Ames Iowa, outdoor concert and they had their 40 foot blow up doll. 😂 2:17

That "slow burn" modulation and tempo change was 🔥. If there wasn't a rock/gospel genre at the time then they started it right here. He is saying flat out I'm down with Jesus no matter what the culture and my peers think. Ballsy release. Great decision to put it out there. Totally agree with you on discussing religion. You need to get your point across, without them thinking it's too much at once, fine balancing act. I'm with The Doobies , love Jesus and His teachings, but don't go on too much about it......unless asked.
Try watching the Jesus Revolution movie for the context of the era this came from. As a Jesus freak and a drummer I can always rock with this song and Takin It To the Streets by the Doobies
I have had the pleasure of seeing these amazing artists a few times and they NEVER disappoint.
songs like this are needed now.... also spirit in the sky was a great song too.... but now if you say you are a Christian... you are judged negatively for that.... and those same people that are judging are calling Christians judgmental. Its really sad. I am a Christian.... I don't really go to church but I do believe, I don't try to preach to anyone. I respect the fact that everyone has the right to believe in whatever religion they choose or not to believe in anything at all. That right is part of what this country was founded on.... which is why many people came here in the first place.

One of the funniest episodes of the great show Freaks and Geeks used this song in a very funny scene. I always think of that show when I hear this.
