Just saw these guys live last night. In their mid 70s, and they still bring it. Played nonstop for almost two and a half hours....25 songs! Absolute legends!
Gotta give some love to Tiran Porter, one of my favorite bass players. He never takes the obvious route, always playing something interesting that acts as a counterpoint to the main melody while still driving the song forward. And a great singer too!
Spot on!! I started learning bass a couple of years ago and Tiran Porter created some of the most incredible bass lines I have ever heard. Beyond my current skill level, but working on getting there.
My favourite Doobie brothers song. I just love that funky Gm7 chord driving the rhythm throughout the song and keeping the train runnin'. The early Doobies with Tom Johnston is the sound that I prefer. 🎶👍🏽
I’m Tommy, I’m 61 now and am a huge fan of your reactions. I can give you perspective on a man that lived when this music was coming out. The Doobies have always been an extremely under rated band. Check out Jesus is just all right. People may disagree with me. But it’s their best song. I wish you both Peace and success. 😎
In the 70's this intro riff was one of the first you learned on a guitar. A combination of strumming and picking unique to Tom Johnston. Thanks for the fun memory.
"Long Train Running" is from the album, "The Captain and Me" which was part of the soundtrack for the Seventies and a lot of great music. That whole album is worth listening to!
Tommy Johnston (lead vocals on this track) came down with serious stomach issues and was replaced by McDonald and the band transitioned to a more laid back sound. A few years later Johnston returned, McDonald left and they returned to the rock sound to this day. Saw Three Dog Night in concert around 1972 and the Doobies, who nobody had ever heard of at the time, were the opening act and blew the roof off the place. A couple of weeks later Listen To The Music hit the airwaves.
The album this is from, The Captain and Me was released 50 years ago. I bought it that same year, when I was 13 on the advice of my older brother. Still love every track to this day and it is still one of my top 10 favorite all time albums. Not a weak track on there and worthy of an entire album reaction. Highlights for me include the Johnston and Simmons guitar opus Without You, Clear as the Driven Snow, Ukiah and Dark Eyed Cajun Woman. Jeff Skunk Baxter also of Steely Dan fame played pedal steel guitar on South City Midnight Lady…another banger. Shameful that it took till 2020 for these musical geniuses to be inducted into the R & R Hall of Fame!
Early Doobies vs. McDonald Doobies. Tom left the band for personal reasons and then came back. They are still in concert using both singers so yeah, check em out. Got to see the Tom version in college in the 70s.
This was our jam song in marching band when I was in high school back in the 80's. We had so much fun with this song. The crowd always enjoyed it too. Good times.
Had just bought my first car when this song was popular. No air conditioning of course, so opened windows, summer nights and The Doobie Brothers on the radio.
Takes me back to my teen years! The Doobies had a great groove... and those bongos added special sauce! Music from the 70's was fantastic. I enjoy watching younger generations discovering for themselves how talented the songwriters, instrumentalists and vocalists were to lay down tracks like this, without auto tune and other enhancements. No disrespect to today's artists--- because there are some great ones---but I wish everybody under 30 would listen to a few songs like this from 50 years ago to experience authentically great talent. Thanks for opening your minds to rock, funk, blues, and all the other genres that we got to enjoy. Hope it will keep this music alive and well!!
Never knew how good these guys were during my teen years...I just liked their name....Thanks for bringing them back so I can appreciate them with adult ears....
Yea I really enjoy them for a number of reasons. They own their own studio. So they understand music. Probably better than I ever will. I’m just a guy who loves music. I appreciate your response. Peace 😎
❤️ the pre-MMcD Doobies. I’ve seen them live without him, and with him, then all of them and their families at the Ventura County Fair. I’ve also seen a solo Tom Johnston. They will always be a favorite!! ☮️❤️
The Doobie Brothers group's first half-dozen albums had a rock feel that morphed into a sound steeped in white funk. It's a compelling story of changing with the times and the influences of the music they loved. So in their way, they had two careers and a wider appeal to more people. That's what good music is all about. It's all good.
The Captain & Me still my favorite Doobie's album. This song, China Grove, Natural Thing, South City Midnite Lady, and on and on. Every song is great. You guys need to do the whole album.
I was in HS. All these great bands were competing for airplay. We just took it for granted and didn't know we were listening to history's greatest musical era.
Tom Johnston on lead vox. Worked with him a few times as a live sound engineer in SF. Loved this band as a kid in the mid 70s. The lead guitar player, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, also played on some really good Steely Dan albums.
The pre Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers were the BEST!!! More to check out from the "pre" era: "China Grove"; "Black Water"; "Jesus is Just Alright"; “Takin’ It to the Streets”; “Listen to the Music”, and so many more!
I recently went to a Doobie Brothers concert. They are currently on their 50th Anniversary Tour. Please see them if you can. It was an incredible show. Excellent reaction gentlemen ❤
Great song, one of my favorite groups y’all got a good thing going here I’m a California born from Lompoc my dad was stationed at Vandenberg from 60-63
As a 38 year old b-boy from Finland, I gotta say. Your reaction to his classic ham made me smile. Had to try out a couple of my old sets and hurt myself on the living room floor over here. That guitar riff just gets you! Maybe react to Jimmy Castor Bunch - It's Just Begun. When you get the chance.
Hey guys, Scotland here! Many, many years ago, imma say, early 90s, I was at a rave night - everyone eccied out their minds, dancing to what you guys now call EDM. Right in the middle of the night, the DJ dropped this track. The place went OFF, everyone absolutely loved it. Good times, thanks for the memories :)
That's no surprise...the Scots are such a musical culture and love to celebrate being Scots...how else do you explain them maintaining such an elite celebration force as the Tartan Army...
@@coinneachmaclellan3121 It's kind of hilarious really, we have the English to thank for the behaviour of the Tartan Army. As soon as English fans started to behave really badly, Scotland was like, oh shit, if the English are doing that, it's clearly not for us and almost immediately turned into a drunken but entirely benevolent crowd. Same thing with general racism. England went all nationalistic and neo nazi lite and Scotland, all of a sudden, were stringently anti racist. It pains me slightly, to give England so much credit but it's a real thing....whatever England do, Scotland do the opposite. True story 🙂.
@@jonnylumberjack6223 From what I've been given to understand the Scots bad behavior was only directed at the English and God knows they have centuries of reasons for that, but they were well behaved as a people with a rich and varied musical culture that demanded expression. I remember being in a steakhouse in Islington in London in 1975 during a home final where the high street leading to Wembley was all boarded up. There was a group of Scots at a table when suddenly one of them stood up with a mug in his hand and started singing to the whole restaurant...he was celebrating his country and who he was, something Scots have done for centuries. It's why the English tried to destroy the clan system, the culture and identity of the Scots. You're right that the English played a part if only to provide a focus for something that was already there and the Tartan Army is an expression of that shared cultural identity in a positive and assertive way.
Without The Doobies where would you be now? Decades of listening and a couple of concerts, still groovin to the reactions of this killer stuff. Thanks guys.
That's from the Captain and Me album. They have four albums in a row that are flawless, that you should definitely add to your collection. In order they are: Toulouse Street, The Captain and Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and Stampede. You can put any of them on and every song will grab your attention.
You have to dig the bass playing Tiran Porter...The lead singer Tom Johnston got liver disease and had to leave the band in the middle of a tour....Michael McDonald came in within a week and the tour resumed....Tom Johnston later came back.
You should contrast this version to the later version live from a show in Santa Barbara (1981-82) with Michael Mac... though he's not featured yet...BUT it is one of the most phenomenal live performances going down...from anyone. They with few exceptions like Pink Floyd and a few others that can play this well live...but they get smaller every year...as to who can play this badass live... And it is a Grove too...
Great song by an iconic band! I agree with many comments here on two fronts: it was great to be alive then and experience this music as it was made! Am 70 now and can’t believe those years passed so quickly….also, you two are my fav reactors, and i feel honored to have found you when you began and have watched you grow..not to mention hear your fresh put on things! Keep up the good work…😊
They are coming to a venue in Charleston SC, right across the street from my son's apartment, in Sept. I worked a Doobie Bros "Farewell Tour" Show about 40 years ago. That's a long farewell...
I had to explain to my husband what a doobie is! And he loves all these am radio favorites. Trust me, he really didn't know. Such a nice clean cut guy. That's reason #8 why I married him. 😀
Gentlemen: Tiran Porter is the fabulous bass player that grooves! I've loved the Doobie Brothers since junior high and I'm now 62. Keep up the good work, love your reactions and viewpoints. Nice to see some of the younger generation enjoying the golden age of rock n roll.
I grew up in Santa Cruz and used to see these guys around town at the grocery store… I was a dumb kid but my brother would point them out. They were hippies… 😂😂😂❤🎸🥁

Love Black Water!
Just saw these guys live last night. In their mid 70s, and they still bring it. Played nonstop for almost two and a half hours....25 songs! Absolute legends!
Doobies already had a greatest hits album around 1976. This is one great American band.
They ain't related but THEY DOOBIE BROTHERS 🎉🎉
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhn fuckin a man .
Don't forget their pet dog, scoobie DOOBIE dooooo
13.🪴
😆
One of the most classic intros in music history
Every song that you react to from the 70’s (1973) you solidify that the 70”s was the best generation for music ! 🔥❤️🎸
Ain’t that the truth… lived it …loved it …wish I could go back!
The 60's would like a word with you.
@@jimr3882 okay the 60’s too! When you’re right you’re right…
Gotta give some love to Tiran Porter, one of my favorite bass players. He never takes the obvious route, always playing something interesting that acts as a counterpoint to the main melody while still driving the song forward. And a great singer too!
Doobie harmony wouldn't be the same without Tiran's voice.
Spot on!! I started learning bass a couple of years ago and Tiran Porter created some of the most incredible bass lines I have ever heard. Beyond my current skill level, but working on getting there.
Tiran's a great player. It's his playing that first got me to follow the bass line in music. I still consider him to be one of the best.
One of my favorite Doobies songs is Tiran’s “For Someone Special “ ! Great bass and great vocals!
Some fantastic bass parts. Very original. Love his tone. Fat with what sounds like fresh flatwounds. That tone kills me.
I grew up in the right era of music over 50 years later and it still sounds great
My favourite Doobie brothers song. I just love that funky Gm7 chord driving the rhythm throughout the song and keeping the train runnin'. The early Doobies with Tom Johnston is the sound that I prefer. 🎶👍🏽
A lot of us old school Doobie Brothers fans moved on to greener pastures when Michael McDonald took them in the "Minute by Minute" direction.
Saw Doobies live last year with Michael McDonald and Tom Johnston. OUTSTANDING!
They come with the intention that their audience will have a good time. Saw them in the late 70s and it was the same.
I'm envious!!
One of their finest.
I still listen to this driving down the highway in my car, window down, wind in hair. Beautiful groove. One of the Doobie's best.
I’m Tommy, I’m 61 now and am a huge fan of your reactions. I can give you perspective on a man that lived when this music was coming out. The Doobies have always been an extremely under rated band. Check out Jesus is just all right. People may disagree with me. But it’s their best song.

That was originally a Buffalo Springfield song by Roger McGuinn.

A joy to hear this again. ❤
"Long Train Running" is from the album, "The Captain and Me" which was part of the soundtrack for the Seventies and a lot of great music. That whole album is worth listening to!
Great groove and great reaction, gents!
The Doobies were the soundtrack at our house.
They sounded AMAZING 3 weeks ago!! Steve Winwood opened for them and sounded AMAZING!
Doobies always kick ass! ROLL TIDE!

Same! I saw him when he went on his own - early 80’s - in a small bar just north of San Diego.
