You should check out the Doobies' hit, "Take Me in Your Arms" which is actually an old Motown song written by the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. It is remarkable and is recorded on their 1975 "Stampede" album.
In their beginning the Doobie Brothers had Tom Johnston (singer in this video) on guitar and lead vocals starting in ’1970. Later in 1975 Johnston had health issues and the Doobies hired Michael McDonald as a keyboard player and lead vocalist, to give some relief to Johnston. Obviously Johnston was irreplaceable (just as Michael McDonald is) and the music style changed. Some hated it, some loved it (I loved BOTH styles). However they NEVER lost their tight 3-part harmony. Both Johnston & McDonald have since shared the same stage with their amazing talents. DOOBIES ROCK!!!!
I really couldn't stand Michael McDonald in the Doobie Brothers. Yes the guy has a great distinctive voice. But I just don't think it was a good fit in the Doobies at all
When Michael McDonald joined the band, he created a whole different vibe. Personally, I prefer the earlier Tom Johston era and was glad to see him come back.
When Michael joined in my opinion they got more pop and commercial. It was ok but I to preferred when Tom was there it was pure rock and blues. This takes me back to a little Sunday road 'trip' a friend of mine and I went on way back when I was a correge studen. She was driving her little red Honda CVCC (which actually had a motorcycle engine) and she and I passed joints back and forth while jamming to The Doobie Brothers. Nostalgia can be its own trip.
One of their early hits. Going back over what you've already reacted to, I'm shocked that you haven't done "China Grove". The guitar riff in that one is one of their best! "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me) is a total rockin' vibe. "Takin' It To the Streets" is great, and so is "Real Love". Their last big hit, in 1989, was "The Doctor", and it's a terrific bookend to the Doobie's amazing run. While I'm at it, I'd like to request "Right Place, Wrong Time" by Dr. John, a great musician you haven't reacted to yet.
The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. Tom Johnson, the singer-songwriter of this song, performed this song for years as a throwaway song that he never had any fixed lyrics to before being convinced to record it. He said that the lyrics he finally settled on were inspired by the song City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie which is a beautiful song you definitely should do and react to
@@garyarnett1220 Regarding the lyrics, Johnston said: "None of that stuff really had any basis in anything. It was just out the top of my head, which, quite frankly, is where all lyrics come from. But I've had songs that just seem to write themselves, and those are blessings for me, because you don't have to sit there and strain your brain for hours trying to come up with the lyrics, it seems like they just flow out on the paper, and you don't even have to think. Other songs, like 'Long Train Runnin'' - not that the words are that difficult or anything - it's just finding the words that I thought fit the track. Took me a long time. I got into the whole train mode, and it's just stuff that comes into your head. It's not like I had a point of reference with anybody named Lucy, I had been around trains on and off throughout my life. "Long Train Runnin' " was the Doobie Brothers 3rd Billboard Hot 100 charting single & 1st in the Top 10, peaking @ #8 in 1973. Their 1st charted single was "Listen To the Music" which almost hit the Top 10, peaking @ #11 in 1972. In between those was "Jesus Is Just Alright" which hit #35.
@@imsirius2 Thanks @imsirius2. I appreciate that. I'm just attempting to give the context of when the record charted in the span of the artist's career and how successful it was.

Just saw them live here in Vegas a few months ago and they were awesome. My wife and I went to see them twice when they had their residency here at Zappos theater. Love it !!!!
This is one of my many favorite Doobie Bro songs. The slightly dark undertones of attempted suicide and the opportunity to rethink that decision. This song is a celebration of life and a message to those who a suffering to just hold on because love is always there even if you don’t feel or see it at the moment. Best thing about the.Doobie Brothers is they are still around snd pumping out hits. " Music is the Doctor"
should be next!
I like your billboard stats on all the songs whereas I try to give little tidbits on the sound and engineering.
@@imsirius2 Thanks @imsirius2. I appreciate that. I'm just attempting to give the context of when the record charted in the span of the artist's career and how successful it was.
Thanks, Mr. Whit...ness. ;) They had 16 Top 40 hits, 5 Top 10s, and two #1s (both of which they've reacted to). The next highest-charting song they do, if they were selecting that way, would be "Real Love" (a great song).
@@Shrykespeare Hey Patrick. I couldn't remember which Doobie Bros songs they had already reacted to before giving a recommendation, so I just did a search: 1) Listen to the Music, 2) What a Fool Believes, 3) Black Water, 4) Long Train Runnin' and then I saw a weird title: "Give Me That Beat Boy" credited to TDB - which is really "Drift Away" by DOBIE Gray. Somehow this never got corrected? Not sure cuz I guess this reaction was before I started watching. But for what it's worth....
I would be happy with "Real Love" as the next one. Maybe "Minute By Minute" or "Takin' It To the Streets" after that?
@Patrick Hodges HA! I just saw your post from 13 minutes ago and you picked the same 2 follow-ups! I honestly did not see that before I typed.
The Doobie Brothers are incredible musicians. I heard them on a radio station in the mid 90s doing a live concert, and they sounded the SAME as in the 70s! Just incredible... Be sure to listen to China Grove if you haven't already. It's a really funky groovy song from The Doobies. Love you guys!!! :)
Saw them twice. They are phenomenal live. Love you guys. Brings back great memories.✌🌻🌻
Just saw them live here in Vegas a few months ago and they were awesome. My wife and I went to see them twice when they had their residency here at Zappos theater. Love it !!!!
The original version by them is WAY better!! This is like a disco remix version! 😖👎
Saw them in concert on the 4th of July. In Detroit. What a great show! I was awestruck! ❤️
This is one of my many favorite Doobie Bro songs. The slightly dark undertones of attempted suicide and the opportunity to rethink that decision. This song is a celebration of life and a message to those who a suffering to just hold on because love is always there even if you don’t feel or see it at the moment. Big hugs and love to all of the wonderful robsquad family!
"Neal's Fandango," "Sweet Maxine," "Down in the Track." Lots of good songs to choose from.
I remember seeing them in concert in the parking lot behind Abuelo's in Bricktown, the stage was backdroped by the SanteFe tracks, and when they started playing this song a very long freight passed behind them
Hey Guys, this music only lasted 10 yeats, it was called Disco! It was !are famous in a movie called Saturday Night Fever with a very young John Trabilta. We wore bell bottom pants made of Poliesyer!!! Hot Hot Hot!
Watching the pair of you just gettin it makes me smile so big!! Thanks for making my evening 🥰
You guys make me so grateful I grew in the 60-70’s.
My absolute fav from The Doobies! I also agree that you also need to check out the original of this….the original version has been on my playlist since the 70’s and will forever remain! 😁
Love the Dobbies since 1970, but throughout the many years I never got the chance to see them is concert. Finally, in 2009, thanks to my close friend Anthony, I saw them open for Bad Company, at Jones Beach, Long Island, NY. Both bands were awesome!!!
Doobie Brothers are an amazing band. Many, many great songs. China Grove is one your NEED to hear!
