Late 60's early 70's was a great time to be a teen !!! Lots of great concerts, tickets were inexpensive...went to a lot of them that were free. People would hang out just to listen to music. I remember lots of times just walking down the street making friends with ppl just sitting on their front porch with the music cranked up. Wouldn't trade those memories for anything !!!
It's Classic Rock, pure and simple. And this was a huge and timeless hit. And there's some great talent there--like Skunk Baxter on guitar. I prefer this particular early line-up.
You may be right about classic rock. They played the Doobie brothers all over the R&B stations as well. This group crossed over into country, they did it all!!
I'm glad u got to reacting to the Doobie Bros!! They're not brothers but have lots of good popular songs to choose! My favorite is Long Train Running! China Grove and Black Water...many more!👍♥️😁
Ton Johnston's arrangements are top class; he really understands music. This song has a lot of high frequencies going on, together with his tenor voice, and this pleases the human brain, making it happy. Truly a masterpiece!
This is one of those songs when you're driving in the car on a warm early spring day, and you have to roll the windows down and crank the stereo full blast and cruze along.
They're considered "Classic Rock" by today's standards. Styx, Journey, Supertramp, Alan Parsons Project, ELO, and BTO are all examples just to name a few.
It's awesome that the music I grew up hearing -60s, 70s, 80s - is becoming popular again, thanks to you youngsters! Keep reintroducing this great music the the next generation.
The guitarist with the sunnies on is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter who apart from playing with the Doobie Brothers also had a lot to do with Steely Dan. P.S. I believe a Doobie was slang for a joint.
Interesting thing about Jeff is that he is now a defense contractor and is very involved in national security having chaired a congressional advisory board on missile defense.
These guys played at my High School in 1971 and they were the warm up band for the 2 main bands (Tower of Power and Stonehenge). They are from San Jose California.
"Music brings everyone together" - You are not mistaken my friend. EXCELLENT reaction. The Doobies were "one of those bands". They kind of occupy their own genre. Nobody really sounds like them. Long Train Runnin' will make you stand up!
A favorite since my years as a teen in the 70's. I took a couple of my sons to see them in the 90's when they were teens. They seemed to be enjoying the show and then they disappeared. They showed up after the show all excited about how great the show was and said they had gone to the front row to watch them better. They have been fans ever since even though their choice of favorite music is very different. I just saw they have a show here in September. I have to get tickets!
In the summer of 2004, it was forecasted to rain a lot during my husband's vacation. We packed our things into our car, and our 9 month son into the car seat, and started a road trip across British Columbia to Tofino. The Doobie Brothers were playing much of the time and my son was calm and slept very well during that road trip.
You mentioned having that flair.. well I was a 60's baby and my mother sewed all of our clothes. She made curtains for my bedroom the sixties and seventies colors lime green yellow and pink flowers .. she had enough material left to make me a halter top and bell bottom pants. I was fly .. and only 6 years old !! My parents were into George Jones and Dolly but my cousins were into Joplin and Dr. Hook .. and Queen. I had the best childhood !
Great song! I could never forget the first time hearing this song, I was at a dance club. This song got everyone on the dance floor. I noticed in the video there were three guitar players and two drummers. What a full sound!
This video is when the Doobies were first starting out...They were all so young in this video!!! Wait until you hear "Another Park, Another Sunday"... :) Thank you for posting this up ! Yes, I know, it was a year ago... But I just found your lovely channel !!! :)
The genre is California San Jose 1970s band music. Very hybrid sound. The music from the Seventies was more upbeat in tone/lyrics. It was celebratory. It showcased the fun things in life: Hanging out with your friends, driving around in your car with your girlfriend, partying, just enjoying life in general. Today's music is dour by comparison. Music reflects what is going on in a society.
Back when you could get a four year degree with a summer job and drugs were pharmaceutical grade. Now you have 100k in debt and speed freaks look like gollum.
I was a 15 year old schoolboy in the UK in 1974, and this blew me away. When you go away on holiday, you're always feeling excited. I heard this on the car radio when going away, and it just added to the feel-good thing. Your parents/grandparents' generations would have you rocking in your prams. They were good. They were pioneers.
Doobie brothers, doobie is slang for lefthanded cigarettes ie joint. They were brothers through their music and war, and chicago were the reasons amphitheaters were popular . Those 3 bands helped us to fill our minds and spirits with love for everyone 💕
One of the best concerts I have ever seen. So much energy and the brilliance of their music was just palpable. So glad y’all are discovering them for the first time. And the Doobie Brothers genre is usually seen as southern fried rock, rock/pop rock.
You listen to a lot of music from our generation (I am 77), and that is a good think. We were basically a happy generation and the music was fun, made you smile, sing along, dance to and generally feel good. I see distinct difference with the darkness all around in music and everything else in these days.
"Pop" wasn't really a genre back in the day. If music sold a lot of records (meaning it was popular) it was called Pop, but it could be country, rock and roll, soul, R&B, easy listening - whatever. And it would all be played on "Pop" radio stations.
And...the 70's is probably the only period when "pop" fans also embraced music with a religious theme and shot them to the top of the charts. Examples..."Amazing Grace" by Judy Collins and "My Sweet Lord" George Harrison, "Spirit in the Sky" Norman Greenbaum and many more.
@@christinec1928 kind of 🤷 . There were a few bands out of California like the Doobies, Poco, Eagles, Jackson Brown, Linda Ronstat, CCR I know I’m forgetting some band but these bands all had a country vibe.
The first time I heard the Doobie Brothers was on a shopping trip in the 70s, when this song was being played as background music in the store. I went up to one of the staff and asked who was the band in the music. They seemed to be a little concerned because I was not asking about things they sold, but went to find out and then told me "the Doobie Brothers". I had never heard of them, but that experience made me then head to the closest record store and but the album that included this track. I have enjoyed their music ever since.
Hey Rob Squad Reactions...we LOVE ya'! And you just heard one of the BEST, if not THE BEST Rock song ever recorded. Keep up the great work Jay and Amber!
I would not classify The Doobie Brothers as pop They had great songs and I still listen to their music. My kids grew up listening to their music. If music is good, it knows no generation. I love watching your reactions to the music from the 70's because it was by far the best music of any generation. You play so many of my favorites that I still listen to today. You don't always interpret the stories correctly but I so appreciate your joy in hearing things for the first time. You bring a smile to my face every time!
I think I may have commented before, but the Doobie Brothers were the first band I fell in love with after hearing Black Water. They were the first adult album my parents bought me as a present. I was maybe 9. But, my parents had music on in the house and car at all times. Lived in Spain from 7 just months before my 8th birthday to just before my 10th birthday. Didn’t have TV until the last 6 months we were there. Something about needing a converter or something like that. I absolutely love music and I appreciate all of the different music you both have listened to. Definitely was the 70’s I was born in 68.
Hi Jay and Amber! :) The "Top Pop" moniker is not a genre for the group, it was actually the name of a music show from back in the day that used to feature music artists from all genres that were charting.
Just makes me shake my head every time you all say "I've never heard of...". I want to excuse it to 'youth' and not being exposed to it. But as a kid in the 70's, I knew music from the 40's, 50's and 60's as well as the 70's... and I didn't have an Internet to make it available to me at a literal click of a button lol. That's ok, though, you're getting to know all these groups/singers now... you have heard of Elvis, right? Right?!?
Brother I’m right there with ya. I make the same argument all the time, I can name you bands or performers going back to the 30’s and 40’s, maybe not a ton, but enough to say, hey I wasn’t only raised in the 70’s and 80’s.
@@GT-mq1dx I guess back in the day, before the Internet and things like RUclips and play lists and such, when there was just AM and FM radio, we were just exposed to a wider range of music.
@@31Mike yeah I’d say, since that’s all we had for entertainment. Like you said up top, I’m just glad these newer generation’s are still being exposed to it. I’d say it’s only lost if it’s forgotten. 😎
@Patrick O'Rourke I'm not sure that I'd agree that there's more 'purposeful and personal communication' today vs. back in the 70's or 80's. There's different communication, yes, and a lot more of what I'd call 'useless' data to process. But back in the 70's and 80's (I was only a kid in the 70's, a teen in the 80's), the communication was much more personal, I feel. I feel like the advent of email and texting has made communication much more impersonal... much, much more so. I do agree with you about Cable TV being the beginning, though. There once was a day where nearly the entire nation (for those in the U.S.), watched a single T.V. episode at the same time on the same day. I'm referring to the final episode of M*A*S*H where more than 100 Million people watched it. Or there was 'Who Shot J.R.?!', that the entire nation was obsessed with. You mention sitting and listening to albums for hours... I do miss those times. Going to the record store, thumbing through the rows and rows of albums, before or after having gone to the movies. Then coming home and listening to our latest purchase. I remember my brothers, friends and I playing Free Bird, over and over... air guitars and air drums being played furiously lol.
Most of the music that I've been watching that you are talking about is '70s. And we used to use the name Doobie Brothers because that's what we used to call a joint
Coincidentally, this was the first song I ever danced to with a girl. I was twelve, and going to a sleepover camp for the time. At the end of each eeek, on the Saturday night, they would have a cookout and a dance, where they played records. This was the song that got me and the girl I liked into the dance floor. Even now, whenever I hear this song, it takes me back to that moment. BTW, I put the Doobies into Southern Rock, but at the time the critics dubbed it the “LA sound.”

The Doobie Brothers earlier works is considered blues/ rock with a country influence. They're later era, with Michael McDonald fronting the band is more pop/adult contemporary. Personally, I prefer the earlier music however Michael McDonald's voice is very soulful. Unfortunately, that steered the band in a different direction, that wasn't as original, IMO. Try Long Train Running, Blackwater, China Grove and Jesus Is Just Alright With Me!
Agreed. I saw the Doobie Brothers back in 1978, I think, after MM joined. Frankly, I preferred the opening act, Ambrosia. Man, they put on a great show.

China Grove and Black Water...many more!👍♥️😁
Not brothers but definitely enjoyed the doobie!
BRINGS BACK 💞
GREAT MEMORIES

The guitarist with the sunnies on is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter who apart from playing with the Doobie Brothers also had a lot to do with Steely Dan.
P.S. I believe a Doobie was slang for a joint.
I believe you're right. lol.
Interesting thing about Jeff is that he is now a defense contractor and is very involved in national security having chaired a congressional advisory board on missile defense.
@@emmef7970 I KNOW he's right.
Yes, slang for a joint. 😂
This song in the Top 5 of all Time, take that to the bank guys.
Agree 100 per cent. Feel good music, very unique band.
"It Keeps You Running" is one of the best songs the Doobie Bros ever made!
Yes, my favorite!
We were all “Doobie brothers “ . Enjoyed them at more than one outdoor concert over the years . Awesome music , in the open air .
Thank you for posting this up ! Yes, I know, it was a year ago... But I just found your lovely channel !!! :)
this song always lifts my spirits. a nice sunny summer day in the early 70s.
Every Doobies song is a classic and a hit, in my opinion. They have great variety while always staying true to their roots. Hard to pick a favorite.
Check out their "Black Water" and "Long Train Running" ;) Both are classics.
Skunk Baxter in the middle there also played for Steely Dan, besides the Doobies.
He has also worked as a missile defense consultant.
The great thing is they deliver today! The best classic rock band on the planet is the Doobie Brothers. You channel is awesome!
Definitely my favorite Doobie Brothers song. 100% a "feel good" song.
"Another Park, Another Sunday" is one of their great laid back, mellow tunes. I think you'd love it!
@PongGod --- Yes, "Another Park Another Sunday" And "South City Midnight Lady".
Spot on...and it's kinda sad.
This song peaked number 11 on Billboard's top 100 in November 1972. I was a junior in high school!
So cool, November 1972 I got to see the lead singer in that red suit.
One of the biggest laughs I've had listening to music was when George Clinton /Parliament said of combining genres, "Do you want Doobie in your funk?"
"Black Water" is probably my favorite song of theirs, although they have many great ones!
Doobie brothers, doobie is slang for lefthanded cigarettes ie joint. They were brothers through their music and war, and chicago were the reasons amphitheaters were popular . Those 3 bands helped us to fill our minds and spirits with love for everyone 💕
68 now, still love this music, had their music when it came out...some of the greatest bands were in the '70's.....
Those were heady days indeed, you had to be there to fully appreciate..I was😎👍
This is probably their best song.
The genre is Rock-n-Roll.
Peace Out 😊✌
One of the best concerts I have ever seen. So much energy and the brilliance of their music was just palpable.
So glad y’all are discovering them for the first time.
And the Doobie Brothers genre is usually seen as southern fried rock, rock/pop rock.
Pop Rock. Songs: Jesus Is Just Alright With Me, China Grove, Minute by Minute, many others.
This is one of those quintessential chill songs... relaxes you no matter what
The Doobs rock then and now and forever.
Music really didn't have a genre in the 70's. I myself consider them rock.
His hair's still flowing. The bands were very diverse in the 70's. It feels like we're going backwards!! 😭
IMO there's 4 kinds of musical 'genres':
1: 'That's all right' genre
2: 'That's really good' genre
3: 'That's fkn insane!' genre
4: 'OMG, my brain just melted' genre
at that time some country bands where going Rock some Rock went country and you had this "Country Rock" and it was good.
You listen to a lot of music from our generation (I am 77), and that is a good think. We were basically a happy generation and the music was fun, made you smile, sing along, dance to and generally feel good. I see distinct difference with the darkness all around in music and everything else in these days.
It’s good as they were on vinyl, they were better in person! Saw them twice in the 70s exceptional group like many others of their time
Some of the very best guitar playing in history.
"Pop" wasn't really a genre back in the day. If music sold a lot of records (meaning it was popular) it was called Pop, but it could be country, rock and roll, soul, R&B, easy listening - whatever. And it would all be played on "Pop" radio stations.
Would you call it Southern Rock?
And...the 70's is probably the only period when "pop" fans also embraced music with a religious theme and shot them to the top of the charts. Examples..."Amazing Grace" by Judy Collins and "My Sweet Lord" George Harrison, "Spirit in the Sky" Norman Greenbaum and many more.
@@christinec1928 I wouldn't. There isn't any country or blues elements that I think are essential in Southern Rock.
I think there were plenty of pop hits in the 50's and 60's with religious leanings ("People get Ready" by Sam Cook comes to mind)
Good ol’ 70’s rock and roll
The Doobies had a few great hits. A couple more to explore would be Black Water and China Grove. Keep pounding you two...
The "Top Pop" moniker is not a genre for the group, it was actually the name of a music show from back in the day that used to feature music artists from all genres that were charting.
"The Captain and Me"... whole album is solid gold....
"Long Train Runnin'", "Black Water", and "China Grove" are also awesome.
You can't really blame them. There's music for every generation, but I notice all reactors adore the 70s music
A "Doobie" is 60s, 70s slang for a Cannabis cigarette, or joint. They and Three Dog Night were my 70s favorite bands.
As they say “they don’t be related - but they Doobie Brothers”
Which Doobie you be?
😉😉😉😉
Brothers by choice are better than brothers by blood.
It's Rock and Roll guys! If you can't put a Genre on it 99 percent of the time it's Rock and Roll! 🤗🤔😎
Grammy Kathi here. The dance to this was "the Bump". We all did it.
Every song Doobie Brothers recorded was a major hit!!
Great guitar riff, and how brilliant is the bass. Essential feel good track, and their portfolio runs deep. Doobie inspired methinks.
Jay, NICE SHIRT. Love ACDC. Love The Doobs too! Rock that rabbit hole. You will love it. You'll see. Great review! You'll probably want to do "What A Fool Believes" next. MEGA HIT for a reason. Ain't nobody out there who doesn't love that one. Fact.
Michael only fronted them because Tom got extremely ill. As in they thought he wasn't going to survive. He did and came back and they actually Toured with Both of them. Now that is a concert I wish I could have seen.
@@SGTJDerek I did not know that. Interesting.
This album had a picture of a roach on the album slip cover. Doobie was a joint back then. Ugh im getting old.
Off their first album, "Toulouse Street". Ton's of hits to follow. One of the best live bands ever, even today.
At the time we called it Rock n Roll. It's still Rock n Roll to me. Wink!
