Jeff Baxter on guitar for Steely Dan and then The Doobies is amazing. People hate on the Michael McDonald years but he helped them produce some amazing music.
Astute observation, lucas! Interesting to track other bands with two, or even three parts'n'sounds to their careers, to wit: Journey, pre- and post-Perry; Fleetwood Mac, before and after Buckingham/Nicks; Genesis, with Gabriel then with Collins, and the Roth/Hagar Van Halen iterations. There have got to be many others, but those come to mind most immediately. Again, good call!
The Doobies, first band I ever saw in concert. 42 years ago, my mom took us kids along, I was only 7 years old. Still remember it and sparked my love of seeing bands live, have seen hundreds since. Thanks Mom, you were awesome! RIP ❤
I love your story! My mother didn’t get me started that early, but starting in my teens I have seen about 200 concerts in my lifetime. I will be 70 in 6 months, but will be seeing the Doobies for the first time in July (in addition to 6 other concerts this year)! Some of the best times of my life!
So... who else had full-on goose bumps when they transitioned from the opening groove into “Taking it to the Streets”?!? Heads to Toe... even my arms!!! That was So awesome!!! Would have loved to have been there! Thank you Jamel... I loved seeing you as excited and jazzed up as I was!!! 💕 Please don’t stop doing what you do!!!!
Michael grew up in Ferguson, MO. He played in local bands with friends of mine in the late sixties. Takin' It to the Streets was inspired by an essay his sister Maureen wrote about racial disparities in the metro St. Louis area. This was written back in the early '70s. St. Louis has always been a divided city, more of a Southern city. BTW, Maureen McDonald can be heard doing the backing vocals on I Keep Forgettin' (We're Not in Love Anymore).
I grew up in St Louis, Normandy. From 60s through now. Never knew that about Michael McDonald, saw many concerts in St Louis, unfortunately never the doobies. Good info.
St Louis has always been pretty rowdy since 1900 or so. Redd Foxx has talked about it in many interviews. Bad enough where blacks moved away to Chicago and Detroit for better job opportunities
@@paulstewart6203 Mike's first band was Mike and the Majestics, with friend Steve Scorfina, who was later in REO Speedwagon, Pavlov's Dog, and Gulliver. Mike later sang in R&B/pop bands (AKA horn bands) before moving to LA around 1970. Dropped out of McCluer High.
Tom Lehr I saw a 13 piece band at the "Bitter End" in the Village in New York last year that had five sax's! It was called "Bump City" Probably for Cornelius Bumpus. One of the most talented bands in pop music history! I saw the Doobie Brothers in concert the Summer of 2021 perform "Takin It To The Streets", and these guys (now in their 70s) CRUSHED it! And the message of the song seems even more relevant now than it was in 1975.

My parents "boogied" to the Doobies from their beginnings in the San Jose area (the Chateau ...), so I grew up with these guys. Their message and joy accompanied my early childhood and still do today. Great band deserving of their airplay to this day.

I think he has sung backgrounds for just about everyone including TOTO.
You have said it before, “music unites us”.
I am a product of the 60's when you heard many types of music on the radio and were inspired by all .I love how you reacted to the first line of this great song. We are all brothers!! Music is the one thing that brings us all together. Man I would love to party with you. Your channel is the best, keep it up.
The Doobie Bros were my very 2nd concert I was only 14 years old!! The best!! 1979! (yeah Im old lol)
My parents "boogied" to the Doobies from their beginnings in the San Jose area (the Chateau ...), so I grew up with these guys. Their message and joy accompanied my early childhood and still do today. Great band deserving of their airplay to this day.
You're on a roll tonight. One of my favorite doobie's song.
💯😍🎷🎵🎻
This song is so relevant now, never more so than now. Peace.
spectacular soundboard recording for a live outdoor show in '82..... performance is incredible.
Classics all the way. I love that intro 😀👍dam like session musicians and Michael pushes the limits👏👏👏👏👏 another treasured memory. Go jamal your in motion too.
He did 'Sweet Freedom' for a movie with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines.
Running Scared Great song/movie
Crystal and Hines actually sang backup vocals on that cut! Cute video of it out there, if you ignore the buddy-cop movie crapola.
Thank you Big Jay- pulling that one up next!
Still got the 12" single of that from back in the day!
GREAT song!!!! Good movie, as well! Thank you for the reminder. :-D
Concerts like this are almost all gone. I feel privileged to have seen them in concert
I feel the same. Music will unite the people. We're all brothers. Thank you brother
Great, thanks! A little Chicago, "Saturday in the Park."
I think it was the Fourth of July
OMG i didn't know i needed this in my life until now
Back in the days when even the rock bands had soul!
Even after hearing it for over 40 years...this song always makes me tear up. Especially now.
Your reaction to the first line....tears, dude...
