I SAY GR8888888888 WAY TO SPEND A BIRTHDAY DAMMITTTT! :) LISTENING TO SOME GR8 CLASSIC ROCK TUNES ALL DAY, THANKS JAMEL, THE BIGGGGG 60 TODAY BUDDY, AND I FEEL EVERYYYYY BIT OF IT TOO! A GOOD HURT THOUGH FOR SURE :)
The lead guitarist on this tune is Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. He later joined the Doobie Brothers!! a band you also like! That is a connection I wanted you to know! During his stint with the Doobies, he became interested in combat related rocket science. No joke! As in “it’s not rocket science”. In his case it was! He is now an advisor for the government in the field of rocket science with a top secret clearance. You just can’t make this sh.t up!!
Skunk Baxter is a genius. His guitar playing is so melodic and original. He is a great one. Listen to his lectures and his intelligence shines through.
You do realize the Pentagon hires all manner of goofballs, nerds, social outcasts, don't you? They do this because people of both a high science and moral integrity want nothing to do with weapons. I give you two examples of such scientists who snubbed the government, Dr. Michio Kaku and Lise Meitner.
I'm sure by now, many people have learned that the Steely Dan roster of musicians changed from song to song. Hours and hours of takes performed by only the best players. Aja took a year, and that was back then.
I grew up listening to Rock music...mid 60's, 70's & early 80's. Trust me when I say, yes, the 70's had some GREAT music like this, but, it had a whole lot of horrible shit too! Stuff that you thought sucked the moment you heard it. A lot of "one and done" artists. A lot of bubble-gum crap that was done just to top a chart, not because it was art! I don't think it is fair to say stuff like this came out every week. Crap came out every week. Stuff like this came out on occasion. And, it was NOT loved, not by the charts at least. This song topped out at 63 on the Billboard Top 100. Top 40 was considered "a hit" in music, and got a LOT of air time on radio. From my perspective, that was proof that Billboard was pathetic. But, perhaps because it DIDN'T get a ton of air time, perhaps that helped to keep it "fresh" too. All I know is, maybe we were "spoiled" back then, but, we didn't know it. All we had to do was look at what was mostly on Top 40 to know otherwise. Nothing against the artists behind those top songs, but, here is an example of "Top Hits" from 1973 - "Bad Bad LeRoy Brown", "Delta Dawn", "Touch me in the Morning", and "You're So Vain"...again, NOTHING against these artists, but, we had a LOT of stuff pumped into the airwaves that wasn't so spectacular, not like Steely Dan. You really had to know to go looking for this. And, in defense of Billboard, Steely Dan refused to tour, and live concerts where the promotional tool of radio. Steely Dan performed one live concert when they first had an album released, Becker & Fagen hated it so much, they swore they'd never do another one. It took a number of years, decades actually, before they did another live appearance. The reason they didn't like them was their inability to recreate the same sound live as they could in a studio, and, both were prefectionists.
I would highly reccomend Caves of Altamira too, even before the others suggested. Aja and Gaucho are their best albums but if anyone asks me for an example of flawless music, I play Caves of Altamira and the listener never disagree. Actually, to hell with this, I would tell you to get their discography and read about the band. The lyrics are always beyond what we hear, very smart always, with cryptic meanings. Oh, Donald Fagen's solo output is also PERFECT, specially his solo debut Nightfly album. These guys got the best of jazz/funk and mixed with pop and prog rock of their time, creating the shape for almost everything that was great in the 80s pop. Btw, Aja is still considered the best album production ever, and in their following release, Gaucho, Fagen/Becker tried so hard to reach perfection that they ended losing much material. For ex. they selected the musicians so weel, even picked Mike Knopfer after hearing the Sultans of Swing hit solo. But in the end, their standard was SO high that they used only around 10 seconds of Knopfer's guitar. I remember hearing they took almost a hundreds of takes for the simply fade out ending of Babylon Sisters and created some kind of giant machine for hit the drums the way the wanted and nobody could play.
Donald Fegan, a genius from my hometown Passaic, NJ. Steely Dan's playlist is so awesome. The horns are so tight. Seeing the slide show of vintge girls with hair hopper do's. This was my time back in the 60's. Makes you want to get up and dance!
STEELY DAN was a tremendous group of Studio Musicians. Donald Fagen and Dan Becker were Collage Buddies that happened to be Music Majors. Man, amI glad they met! God rest Dan Becker.
Jamal, you said it at 4:40 "Y'all were spoiled". Damn straight. The music us older folks grew up on was amazing. Lots of monster skill and creativity to inspire the rest of your life. Thank you for the enthusiastic review.
Stephanie Tipton God bless you. My children have a list of Steely Dan songs to play at my celebration (funeral). I’m 55 so hopefully a long time from now!
I’m 17 years old, and this is one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. I’m so glad I discovered this channel, since it wasn’t too long before I was discovering good music like you. Keep this up man, absolute fantastic job introducing fine art to your audience! 👏🏻
I'm thrilled that you found Jamal ~ you will get an amazing amount of, and a huge variety of music here that will stay with you the rest of your life! Welcome to some of the Best Music ever written! I'm 65 and have listened to this amazing variety of music all my life ~ thankful for it every single day! Peace to you~
Growing up on the 70s and 80s, this was the kind of music always on the radio, doobie bros, eagles, box scaggs, Chicago, all great. Love your positivity!
I raised my hand when you said "Y'all were spoiled"! That one has been my favorite Steely Dan song for at least 30 years. It was super cool watching you enjoy that so much.
520k subscribers. I am so thankful, because I know a lot of these are people who didn't grow up with this music on the radio...and they are discovering it for the first time, which means it will live long after those of us who were, as Jamel rightly says, spoiled to have it in our youth.
Steely Dan- Do It Again, Reelin in the years, Fire In The Hole, King Of The World, Boston Rag, Bodhisattva, Your Gold Teeth, Night By Night, Haitian Divorce, Green Earrings, Don’t Take Me Alive, The Caves Of Altamira, Josie, Deacon Blues, Bad Sneakers, Hey Nineteen, Cousin Dupree, Two Against Nature.
Footnote: in the music world writ large, even among Steely Dan non-fans, The Dan is unequivocally known for two things: 1) They are among the very best produced artists to ever release an album. 2) They write some of the most covert and obscure lyrics of all time.
Hey Jamel - Congrats! YOU get it! So glad to see you enjoy this great band. They don’t make music like in the 60s through the late 70s and into the 80s anymore! Indeed, we WERE and still ARE spoiled. That’s why you see so many oldsters enjoying the younger folks who are finding this awesome era of music. Rock on Brotha!
Growing up in the seventies I knew we had some great music. I thought it was prejudice that made me think it was the best to date but the longer I live and listen to people like you convinces me it was the best and yes "we were spoiled" ha ha
Jamel, I am from New Zealand and I love watching your reviews, l can just see the pleasure on your face to everything you play. Keep up the good work Sir.
I just love how you appreciate Steely Dan's music Jamal! The 70's really did produce some incredible music. Such a gift. And we are so lucky to have access to any tune we want, that's the gift of this age 😀
"Rose Darling" 👍(agree with ^) for some unbelievable vocal harmonies. Mike McDonald is backing this one too. Another monster on "Katie Lied" is "Everyone's Gone to the Movies". Listen to the the backing "ooh's" in the verses. Goose bumps every time.
Jamal, thank you for showing such appreciation for truly great music. On this piece, it's the syncopation, the brass section, the guitar riffs and fun lyrics that make your fingers snap and toes tap. One of my favorite songs from SD.
Great songs played to absolute perfection by the best musicians in the world at the time. We were so lucky to have been alive back then. What a time for Rock and Roll...
Countdown seems like an almost wasted LP EXCEPT for My Old School. M.O.S. is my favorite S.D. song. S.D. recorded a lot of great songs but never topped this one.
This was 47 years ago and they are still relevant today! I wonder if today's music will still be resonating with people 50 years from now? This is part of the greatest era there has ever been in music, from the 60's through the early 90's. I was lucky to grow up during that era but believe me; we all took this music for granted!
One of my favorite bands, love these guys, I've got an album close by whenever I'm in the mood for some Steely Dan, I'll throw it on the turntable...and let my neighbors enjoy it too...
I just heard that song for the first time this morning, so effing good! I've always been a greatest hits kind of guy with the Dan, but now with Spotify I can put on any album I choose front to back. "The Royal Scam" I think might be my favorite, "Aja" a close second
Steely Dan is brilliant, their music has that New Orleans jazz feel with that blues-infused rock. What can you say about those lyrics true story tellers
If you ask me to describe Steely Dan's sound, I would say that they were to New York City transplants who moved to Los Angeles adopted that Laurel Canyon sound. They loved the Laurel Canyon pop, with all the country rock, folk rock, and soul music that it had. They took that sound and then added a whole bunch of jazz fusion and Latin rhythm. They made it their own.
Whenever I'm in the mood for this song, I keep coming back to this clip, just to see your REACTION to it! Which is about the way I feel, EVERY time I put it on!
I´m a Dan fan for 5 decades now and they never cease to amaze me - thanks a bunch for introducing this fantabulous music to a contemporary audience here on yt!
Sweetheart thank you for your time I'm Paloma from Madrid I'm a jazz funky soul singer I used t sing steely Dan I grow up in the best area I was so young with the best jazz musicians they were half Spanish and American all my sweet memories love you so much thanks for make me so happy
you are so effing right Jamal... they dont make them like this no more. This is one of several songs I have logged in my 50 plus years of music enjoyment that cannot be played loud enuf... The Dan are the Boss... Keep up the heavy vibes and reactions. Love watching them. And check out more Little Feat!
Love, love, love watching you groove to Steely Dan. If you don't get up and move to Steely Dan, you just ain't right! Been jammin to S. D. since the early 70's and I am 64 now.
Jamal, my 20 year old daughter loves this song! One of her favorites! Our entire family loves Steely Dan! Thanks for recognizing this classic song and Steely Dan!
Jamel, this is my era music. You're right there is not much music like this being made now. That's what my dad always said about his era vs. mine. So now at age 61 I've gotton hooked on his old stuff from the 30's and 40's. Big band and old jazz. Woody Herman doing "Mood Indigo" or Cab Calloway, or, Dave Brubeck. None of that will disappoint you.
Jamal you bring happy to my heart. Of all these reaction people following your lead, they can't hold a a candle to your heart felt comments. I was born in 1956, and I played this music but I never had the insight you have. You are Numero Uno
This is the best of the best, not average music making. When you are my age you’ll appreciate the best of today’s best. And I hope some generous person like you appreciates it.
One of SD's best imo. The wiki on this explains a little about what this song means. The song's lyrics tell the story of a drug bust at Bard College (named "Annandale" in the lyrics after its location) while both Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were students there, and how a female acquaintance had inadvertently betrayed them to "Daddy Gee" (G. Gordon Liddy, then the local prosecutor). The upshot is that the singer vows he is "never going back" to the college until "California tumbles into the sea."

Happy Birthday! You were around when this came out!
This comment made my night
HBD!!
William and Mary, class of 85 we ROCKED this song all over the campus... Thank you, Steely Dan
The lead guitarist on this tune is Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. He later joined the Doobie Brothers!! a band you also like! That is a connection I wanted you to know! Steely Dan. Every rock band's favorite band. For good reason. It'll never get old!!!!!!
Completely spoiled, those of us rocking when music of the 70s dropped!!
No auto tune. Every sound you hear are actual voices hitting notes, every instrument actually played by humans.
You are so right! We were terribly spoiled! The caliber of talent was out of this world and we may never see such a gathering again!
"Deacon Blues" by Steely Dan is a MUST if you like funk, jazz and blues.
Amen! Check this one out, Jamel.

LOL! Words outta my own mouth..Good lookin out!
THE best Steely Dan song. So good.
Man, this song is a master class in horn arraignment for rock and roll music.
Cold Blood is pretty darn good too. Different but...
No horns were arraigned in the making of this song. But the arrangement is -- no pun intended -- off the charts.
Donald Fegan, a genius from my hometown Passaic, NJ. Steely Dan's playlist is so awesome. The horns are so tight. Seeing the slide show of vintge girls with hair hopper do's. This was my time back in the 60's. Makes you want to get up and dance!

Bill Wampler and we had to chose Grammy winners from all these musicians!
I heard this a bunch of times when I was a kid. I didn't recognize how great this music was until I was an adult.
I remember going to my room, put on head phones, between Chicago, steely dan, eagles...i was out of reality, got me through many alone times

Your right, we were spoiled. Late 60s-70s golden era of music.
Growing up on the 70s and 80s, this was the kind of music always on the radio, doobie bros, eagles, box scaggs, Chicago, all great. Love your positivity!
Considering how today's music is made I now appreciate even more the songs I grew up with in the 70's.
Oh I agree.
Steely Dan is sonic sophistication.....
Lisa they transcend time and genre with regard to music...
I love this song, but not every song back then was this good. And I think "Uptown Funk" is as great and it's recent.

Green Earrings. I just had to listen to that last night! That and The Fez which has now infested my brain on replay
Sean Remington There are so many songs I pretty much could’ve just listed out the albums lol
My favorite albums are The Royal Scam followed by Aja.
So true about the older music compared to what's out there today. I was truly blessed to grow up in this era!
We were so spoiled back in the day.. And we loved every darn second.. Transcendent concerts..
Steely Dan ..... classy , tight, timeless music 👍
We weren't spoiled. We were lucky. Right place, right time.
Thank you! Yes, we were spoiled with great music back in the 70's and early 80's.

Steely Dan sounds SO good because Fagan is a perfectionist. You can hear it.
“They just don’t make music like this no more” , but when they did they made a hell of a lot of it ! You have a lot of catching up to do.
Whenever I hear this, it just makes me really happy. I love Steely Dan.
The horns man. The horns
Jamel, I am from New Zealand and I love watching your reviews, l can just see the pleasure on your face to everything you play.

There were a few great bar bands that lacked the brass section but had a Moog. Wonderfully funky and danceable either way.
Great songs played to absolute perfection by the best musicians in the world at the time. We were so lucky to have been alive back then. What a time for Rock and Roll...
Nobody's mentioned "FM- No Static At All ".

you are so effing right Jamal... they dont make them like this no more. This is one of several songs I have logged in my 50 plus years of music enjoyment that cannot be played loud enuf... The Dan are the Boss... Keep up the heavy vibes and reactions. Love watching them. And check out more Little Feat!
So, so cold chillin' and always satisfying. The Dan, right for every occasion.
Reelin in the Years by Steely Dan if someone hasn’t suggested that already
This is a MUST Jamel. Reelin in the Years is a MUST. Please do it if you choose one more Steely Dan. /d
Jack Cade That was one of their best songs and the guitar riff is absolutely amazing, yah gotta check it out!!! 🎸
Love, love, love watching you groove to Steely Dan. If you don't get up and move to Steely Dan, you just ain't right! Been jammin to S. D. since the early 70's and I am 64 now.
Got to love his variety of genres. Hard, soft, always funky. Good man!
Jamal, my 20 year old daughter loves this song! One of her favorites! Our entire family loves Steely Dan! Thanks for recognizing this classic song and Steely Dan!
My 2nd favorite group only behind Van "the Man" Morrison. Rock with a lot of jazz and blues thrown in.
Just imagine the Talent that has made Steely Dan who it is through out the years, and still makin' music Today !!!
So glad you’re doing steely Dan!! I’d recommend home at last and the caves of Altamira
Great suggestions! ...Charlie Freak and Dr. Wu are killers too...:).
Purdie shuffle...almost enough said...but far too much talent on that track to roll that way.
At "My Old School".... "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" Steely Dan is the Sh!t...!!!!
I just love the music which came out of America 🇺🇸 but these two dudes were so technically gifted. Love from England 🇬🇧
Love your dancing and everything else you do...always smiling when i look and listen to your videos...please keep doing what you do...oxoixo
Really enjoy your appreciation of this great band and your closing words about how music can unite people Bravo!
The guitar solo on this track is one of my favorites ever.
Love this band. Most complex music I've ever seen printed. Yet, all together, magic.
The guitar solos always make me grin.
Jamel, thank you!
I have loved this song for decades, and I get goose bumps watching someone else enjoy it for the first time.
Stan Dupp I learned this from Wikipedia, too, about six months ago, lol. Listened to it for decades and never knew what it meant. So funny.
The sarcasm was heart felt. It took decades before either of them returned to Bard after (I believe) graduating.
My favorite song of steely dan
