That’s Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, later of The Doobie Brothers, killing it on those guitar solos Harri. Steely Dan was huge and there is no other band since that has quite managed to sound like them. They are a musical genre of their own combing rock, blues, funk, soul and jazz with the best studio musicians in the world. One of the founding duo, Walter Becker, passed away a few years ago but the other founding member, Donald Fagen, still tours with the band. I am going to see them on November 6&7. Please do more of them. Billions of views can’t be wrong. 🔥🎺🎹🎷🎸
Steely Dan gives us so much to listen to packed into every single song. It’s always delightful. I’ve heard these songs dozens of times and they never get old. I’m still noticing little bits that I never noticed before. 😂🌺✌️
Steely Dan are a great example of what happens when you really listen to an artist you heard growing up but never though much about, and then realize they're amazing.
JAMEL DID THIS SONG FOR ME ON MY 60TH BIRTHDAY LAST YEAR HARRI, WHATTAAAAA WAY TO SPEND YOUR BIRTHDAY LISTENING TO GREAT CLASSIC ROCK! :) MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE STEELY SONG, IT'S RIGHT THERE SO!
Steely Dan! How can you not love this group. Years of great and memorable music. One of my favorites is "Black Friday". Funky, jazzy, great riffs, and ebony an Ivory keystroking piano! Gotta love it. Great in the studio and to see them live was spectacular!
One of Steely Dan's best; cryptic lyrics that tell the story of a 1960s drug bust at Bard College (the "William & Mary" of the North) where both Becker & Fagan were students. "Daddy G" is G. Gordon Liddy who was local attorney general, later still caught up alongside Nixon in the Watergate scandal; Fagan's girlfriend was nabbed in the drug bust and, as she was not a student, was not bailed by Bard College hence her father had to bail her from the county jail from amongst the working girls. The opening line "35 sweet goodbyes" is roughly half of 69; let your imagination do the rest. Nice reaction.
They just didn't want to tour any more, which cut out a swath of people who would have otherwise been down. They really didn't care. Every album went platinum which was alright by them. They put out excellence and felt they shouldn't have to promote it by touring. Let the music stand on its own. Holy shit, did it ever!
Having enjoyed Steely Dan Live a couple of times I can tell you they are as tight a band as any I've seen as you would expect as talented a ensemble to be. My Old School is the tune that most prompts the audience into a sing along bop dancing party mode. No surprise to that either.
My three favorite bands are Steely Dan, Pink Floyd and Zeppelin....hard to say which order they fall, it's like comparing apples to oranges. Just wanted you to know how much your show makes my day. Sending love from Atlanta, Georgia. stay cool.
My life changed for the better as soon as I started listening to Steely Dan... no joke... Its nice to experience any song on your own without anyone else's influence... It seems to make it worthwhile to judge with no prior recommendation
This song is at least partly about about a May 1969 drug bust at Bard college where Fagen and Becker met. In the song they refer to it as Annandale. "Daddy G" was the local prosecutor infamous to us oldsters as G. Gordon Liddy.
It’s like being out of you comfort zone like I did when I left college in NYC for Keene State NH College 4,000 town 20,000 but being so joyful maybe too much so Adapting to this New World
*Harri* I'm commenting BEFORE watching your reaction.! I *ALREADY* KNOW you will LOVE this one.! Production wise and top shelf musical hired guns under Donald & Walter's vision is *second to none* think about it........ pre pro tools, pre auto tune, etc. And to achieve the production perfection these 2 got, mindboggling..!!!!! The other thing I ALWAYS LOVE about Steely Dan is lyrically the subject matter is always taboo stuff like drug dealing, gang stuff, etc.etc. but wrapped up in these beautiful harmonies and exquisite musical productions.!!!!! Not glorifying the content just *always amazed* at the *Dichotomy of the two* that's all.... Geez.... binge watching Harri tonight, lol..... raising my glass to you....*David* .....
I admire Skunk Baxter a great deal, and I understand why people love the guitar on this song. But for me, it's all about that baritone sax. My favorite Dan song, and the theme resonates all these decades later.
We used to cover this in a band I was in. Great song. Great band. Even though he actually weny to school in Anondale the song could be literally about not going back to your old school, or could be a metaphor, you really never know for sure with Donald Fagen! But the funk keeps the head bobbing for sure.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of "The Doobie Bros. also was a part time member of Steely Dan. They (Steely Dan) used to like to change up the sound of the band, for different Albums. The two main founders Donald Fagan, and Walter Becker were the two constants that wrote and performed on all of the albums. Michael McDonald sang on some Steely Dan albums as well. He too, was a member of Thee Doobies for a while. As you cabn see, it was quite incestuous, musically speaking. But then, you'd be surprised how many different Bands have done the same thing.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter plays the guitar here and he also played with the Doobie Brothers. Nowadays Jeff is a missile consultant with the US government! Not bad having a rocket scientist in your band, eh? Kind of like Brian May being an astrophysicist and playing guitar with Queen! Yes, Steely Dan was a _very_ big band back in the 1970s. So much humour in every song! Try "Black Friday", one of their more satiric songs. 😉👌😎
The reason they were not bigger back then was because stopped touring early on to perfect their studio albums and because Walter Becker was shy who had a major drug addiction! They hit it big when they released the album AJA which was heavily pushed by their management and love both by the critics and fans alike!
I'd say they hit it big years before Aja, with hits like "Reelin in the Years" and "Ricki Don't Lose That Number." The FM deejays in the NYC metro area regularly played those and more in the early to mid 70's.
They were not big cause Donald's lyrics are metaphoric. Most people have no idea what he is talking about. Donald does not write "I wanna rock n roll all night and party everyday" LOOL He writes "Worry the bottle momma it's grapefruit wine" I have seen over 100 reaction vids of Steely Dan and not a one has put together the album title Can't Buy A Thrill with the front pic on the cover. Ladies of the night all lined up. Or Aja. It is pronounced Asia. If you look close at the front pic on the cover there is a lovely Asian woman. Gotta look close to see her face.
I think this song is about a female college friend of Donald and Walter who narc-ed on them, and initiated a drug (marijuana?) bust by police at Bard College in New York. Hence, they didn't think the girl could be so cruel ... and they're never going back to their old school.
Yeah this isn't from Can't Buy a Thrill, it's from Countdown to Ecstasy, very solid album and you can hardly do wrong picking another song from it. Bodhisattva, Boston Rag, King of the World all very worthy of a listen
I don't get funky, it's bouncy rock (that I've heard 295 times before) augmented with some stellar horns and exquisite guitar solo, or three; I've heard 295 of these (albeit without the stellar horns and exquisite anything). Go to Scam,Aja,Gaucho for the funky stuff. But it's the the *best* bouncy rock. I'd choose this one out of the 296 bouncy rock songs - It's a great - they encore with this one. It's their bounciest. Good to see you're firmly in the fan camp now. I don't know why they're not in the Zep/Floyd/Who league in the UK, but to my ears they're champions. Do more: I defy you to dislike anything. Wanna get funky - Green Earrings.
Do some research into the lyrics. Great window into the social angst of the times. It's interesting...college drug bust, abortion, G Gordon Liddy later of Watergate fame. ..just saying. .
This is early Dan and the school they refer to is their college. Bard College, in Annandale, New York. The lyrics are about a drug bust at their school in May 1969. The pictures in the video are pretty lame and have little to no relationship to the music and lyrics.
Jamel aka Jamal another reactor did a great job of researching the history and meaning of this song. You really should check it out. It brings a whole new dimension to it. No offense to this host, there is a reason why I keep coming back.
If you want something a bit different check our Undertones (teenage Kucks) Insprirel Carpets this is how it feels John Miles (music was my 1st love) Sam Brown (Stop) Hazel o Conner (Will You)
Green Earrings is IMO their funkiest groove. Night by Night also. Babylon Sisters. Get into the deeper cuts of SD. I'm a huge fan and I will not lead you astray.
great suggestion, night by night! I forgot about that one. haven't listened to my Pretzel Logic album in decades. great guitar solo on that as I recall.
Dr. John, from the musical birthplace of Jazz and funky gumbo, New Orleans, has written and performed some soulful music. I like his entire album named, "Mos' Scocious," with great tunes like, "RU4Real" and "You Minus Me."
"Bodhisattva" is a must listen from them. Some amazing guitar work.
I second this request
It must be the song title that scares them...
Kid Charlemagne is another fantastic song of theirs. Please add to your growing list. You won't be disappointed. Thanks and God bless 🇺🇸🇺🇸
That’s Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, later of The Doobie Brothers, killing it on those guitar solos Harri. Steely Dan was huge and there is no other band since that has quite managed to sound like them. I'd say they also had a progressive rock side to them as well.
Steely Dan gives us so much to listen to packed into every single song. It’s always delightful. I’ve heard these songs dozens of times and they never get old. I’m still noticing little bits that I never noticed before. 😂🌺✌️
I think this is my favorite Steely Dan song. Thanks for the reaction! 😀
The Annanadale reference was to Bard College in Annandale, NY, where Fagen and Becker met.
They dont have one bad song, its amazing. Any song you choose from them you will enjoy it
Jazz has never sounded so good in modern hit music.
I my favorite from Steely Dan.
They didn’t have tons of mainstream radio hits, but a few. They’ve become more popular as fans dug deeper into their catalogue.
The horns and guitar ,wow, fine musicians great song.
Hey nineteen Rikki don't lose that number are great song by Steely.
Great song of course...... and the video adds a lot to this tune. Very well done. Steely Dan never disappoints.
Always loved and always will love this song.
The line about California tumbling into the sea always caught my ears whenever I heard this on the AM radio as a kid back when.
Always reminds me of the 100 Flowers song "California's Falling Into the Ocean"
Steely Dan are a great example of what happens when you really listen to an artist you heard growing up but never though much about, and then realize they're amazing.
JAMEL DID THIS SONG FOR ME ON MY 60TH BIRTHDAY LAST YEAR HARRI, WHATTAAAAA WAY TO SPEND YOUR BIRTHDAY LISTENING TO GREAT CLASSIC ROCK! :) MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE STEELY SONG, IT'S RIGHT THERE SO!
Great musicianship on all levels defines Steely Dan. This song so rocks it
Steely Dan! How can you not love this group. Years of great and memorable music. One of my favorites is "Black Friday". Funky, jazzy, great riffs, and ebony an Ivory keystroking piano! Gotta love it. Great in the studio and to see them live was spectacular!
If you like Funky Steely Dan. Check out their song "Josie."
One of Steely Dan's best; cryptic lyrics that tell the story of a 1960s drug bust at Bard College (the "William & Mary" of the North) where both Becker & Fagan were students. "Daddy G" is G. More cowbell!! Great song.
The guitar work in this song is off the hook.
❤️🎶❤️🎶 Love The Dan.
They just didn't want to tour any more, which cut out a swath of people who would have otherwise been down. They really didn't care. Every album went platinum which was alright by them. They put out excellence and felt they shouldn't have to promote it by touring. Let the music stand on its own.
Holy shit, did it ever!
Man, those solos! One of my favorite songs. Glad you enjoyed!
Daddy Don't Live In New York City No More..off of (Katy Lied) great song great album
You describe this classic perfectly. Second on Bodhisattva.
Having enjoyed Steely Dan Live a couple of times I can tell you they are as tight a band as any I've seen as you would expect as talented a ensemble to be. My Old School is the tune that most prompts the audience into a sing along bop dancing party mode. No surprise to that either.

"Any Major Dude Will Tell You"....!
The line about Daddy G is a reference to G Gordon Liddy who was a prosecutor at the time of the story.
FACT: Steely Dan never did a bad song. It just wasn’t in them. Try Black Cow or FM (No Static at All)
No static, lol. FM vs AM, am silence under a bridge cracks me up to remember those days. Great times
This is my favorite Steely Dan song. Look up where their name came from. FM is probably their funkiest tune. Give it a listen
If you like their funk side then you need to hear Black Cow off their Aja album!
For some of us, this was the first SD song we heard. And it was so great - fun and sarcastic and je ne sais quois
It was the song on am radio that got me saying "I have never heard anything like this". Been a huge SD fan since.
It’s like being out of you comfort zone like I did when I left college in NYC for Keene State NH College 4,000 town 20,000 but being so joyful maybe too much so Adapting to this New World
Really good- that was fun!

Wow I just noticed the Guitar neck lamp! ✌️😂🎸
"King of the World" ending their second album which this song was on is just a killer song to end the album.
Hey Nineteen!!!!
No we can’t dance together
No we can’t talk at all
Please take me along
When you slide on down
1972, Harri. A different time, much more laid back in the US, despite the war at the time.
Have a great day.
STEELY WAS JUST LIKE ELECTRIC LIGHT HARRI, THEY HAD THEIR OWN SOUND AND THEY WERE QUITE UNIQUE! :) VERYYYYY PROGGY AND JUST GREAT SOUNDING
I remember hearing the hits from their first album, wasn't impressed. I heard this song and changed my mind, these guys are good!
I'm all for the 35 sweet goodbyes.
They have a Great song titled " Don't Take Me Alive" Give it a listen Harri.
Harri, check out "Don't Take Me Alive". Larry Carlton, with jazz guitar on overdrive.
We used to cover this in a band I was in. Great song. Great band. Even though he actually weny to school in Anondale the song could be literally about not going back to your old school, or could be a metaphor, you really never know for sure with Donald Fagen! But the funk keeps the head bobbing for sure.
Can't go wrong with the Dan.
Two great Steely Dan songs are "FM" and "Kid Charlemagne"
Steely Dan Green Earings for funk Harri!
IKR. I always recommend this song but so few reactors listen. The ones who do always love it.
Steely Dan had a unique voice enjoyed many of his songs. Nice pick Harri.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of "The Doobie Bros. also was a part time member of Steely Dan. They (Steely Dan) used to like to change up the sound of the band, for different Albums. ( RIKKI DON'T LOSE THAT NUMBER ) IS RIGHT THERE WITH MY FAVORITES , IT'S A CLASSIC :)
You, sir, react to some good music! Keep up the good work!
Try their song FM, for funky.
You got it!
Best cover band that I've heard is Lexington Lab Band...they do some Steely Dan that will blow yr socks off .
Harri. I know how much you like Leonid and Friends. Their version of this is sensational

@@aquilomanganelli175 Ebrnthough they were played regularly The Dan hit the big time with AJA.
Steely Dan out-Chicago’s Chicago on this song!
Cha cha cha
Nearly Dan are a tribute band in the UK Who do a good job.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on guitar

Thanks for all your wisdom
For me one of my favorite Steely Dan tunes along with Reelin' and Ricki loosing that silly number. Steely Dan rules. So do the 70s.
BIGGGGGGGGG R.I.P. TO WALTER :( WALTER BECKER
I think this song is about a female college friend of Donald and Walter who narc-ed on them, and initiated a drug (marijuana?) bust by police at Bard College in New York. Hence, they didn't think the girl could be so cruel ... and they're never going back to their old school.

For another side of the Rubiks Cube otherwise known as The Dan, listen to The Royal Scam.
A Russian group, Leonid and Friends, does a solid cover of this song.
Steely Dan is mostly a Funk/Jazz fusion Band. As you dive deeper into this fantastic band, you'll see exactly what I mean.
Feel that funk and get that stank face! 😝✌🏻
And here I thought Isaac Hayes did this originally!!
Now try the cover by Leonid and Friends. I've never heard a better cover of this song.

This song is not on the album cover you showed. It's on Countdown to Extasy not Can't Buy A Thrill.
If you want something a bit different check our

John Miles (music was my 1st love)

Saw John Miles third on the bill with Montrose & Journey. Great night of music.✌
Green Earrings is IMO their funkiest groove. Night by Night also. Babylon Sisters. Get into the deeper cuts of SD. I'm a huge fan and I will not lead you astray.
great suggestion, night by night! I forgot about that one. haven't listened to my Pretzel Logic album in decades. great guitar solo on that as I recall.
funky you say ? give Sneakin' Sally through the Alley by Robert Palmer . another good one is Right Place Wrong Time by Dr. John
Dr. John, from the musical birthplace of Jazz and funky gumbo, New Orleans, has written and performed some soulful music. I like his entire album named, "Mos' Scocious," with great tunes like, "RU4Real" and "You Minus Me."
They were huge commercially.
Steely Dan>>>>>>>>the rest.
There’s a reason they are sampled so many times.
They might have been more popular if they had done more live shows. I think it was because Walter Becker had terrible stage fright.
Umm, My Old School is not on Can't Buy a Thrill.
Steely Dan is amazing. There's much better songs that they put out than this one.
Not many better than this, royal scam maybe
Whoever put that vid together totally missed the point! 😆
Completely irrelevant to a great song from Steely Dan.
Suggestion: just listen to the song and not watch someone's idiotic video
School was a big Drag. Hello Miami. 🏝️🪴. Freedom.
