I think in 2025 we should all install shag carpet, wear bell bottoms and silk shirts, mix up some martini's and groove on house parties with Steely Dan non-stop for the entire year.

Yes, this is such a classy fusion of r'n'b, funk beat and jazz - and with unique chord progressions. The progressions are a legacy of their early interest in jazz, for sure, and they're found all over the band's recordings and on Fagen's solo albums. "Josie" was one of the first songs I heard with them.

Steely Dan is a great American rock band founded in 1971. They had a lot of great hits such as "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Hey Nineteen", "Dirty Work", "Peg", "Do It Again", "Aja", "Kid Charlemagne", "Reelin' In The Years", "Deacon Blues", "FM", "Show Biz Kids", "My Old School", "Babylon Sisters" etc."

Steely Dan lyrics are always great .. interesting, descriptive, snarky at times, with just enough vagueness to allow personal interpretation. Glad you liked this one Tasha. Enjoy the Steely Dan journey.

Steely Dan was only a "band" for a few short years in the early 70s. The two principals, Fagen and Becker, went "solo" after that. They had incredibly strict requirements for their studio musicians and vocalists. I believe it was the insistence on high quality that made them successful They are firmly in my "Top 5 all time artist" list. You just can't go wrong. Great reaction! Enjoy!

    • @xebio6

They were "a band" again in 1993/4 and then again after 2000, until today.

One of my favorite things about The Dan is that all of their songs are steeped in meaning. The Royal Scam is about the plight of Puerto Rican Immigrants, Kid Charlemagne is about a famous LSD maker, Glamour Profession is about a high class coke dealer, etc. Believe it or not the inspiration for Josie was actually Walter Becker's dog.

Face it. There is no other band better than THE DAN !!!! They used many studio musicians in their work, I believe mostly with AJA. My favorite albumn still in 2025. My daughters bought me a turntable for Christmas, so AJA is probably the first album I will purchase . Late 60’s, many great bands started out, and are still being listened today !!!! Check out CHICAGO, BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS, and now u have found STEELY DAN 🥰

Winging it is my way. That's how we discovered and experienced music.
We'd hear a song, by the album, play the heck out of it and read the album cover to cover. Some, a lot had no lyrics either. So going in blind makes sense. ✌🏽
I named my puppy Josie after this song. 😁
"Peg," "Deacon Blues," I love the title track "Aja." Anything on this album is great Tasha. We are all in for SD. 😎💃

    Yeah, man !!
    Peg next , please .
And T is correct -- Aja is one of the best albums ever produced . Mind-blowing.
And apparently the producers knew this when they published the album because the reverse side of the album cover is full of quotes from nationwide reviews of this iconic lp .
I bought the album based on either Josie or Peg [ more likely both ] , which were being played repeatedly on the radio.
But the other tracks are outstanding. as well .
And they sound nothing like the two aforementioned tunes .

I despise that term "yacht rock". All of us listened to the music that's called yacht rock back when I was growing up, and none of us have ever owned a yacht, or probably ever rode around on one.
Personally I've never liked the term Southern rock either, and I'm from the South. It's just rock and roll, which sort of originated in the South in the first place. No one calls Elvis or Chuck Berry's music southern rock. Just a bunch of marketing BS as far as I'm concerned.

@@hog7203Genre titling has always been annoying, though I understand how people use it to pigeonhole the many different styles and trends in music.
I love it all, but even though most bands were influenced by contemporaries and a certain style or direction in trends they all chose their band names and did what they chose to do the way THEY do it.
Even Dee Dee of the RAMONES was insulted and pissed everyone started calling them a “punk” band, to him they were just another rock band who played loud and fast. 🤷

    • @hog7203
      @hog7203 2 дня назад

@CANDOKNOWHOW I actually missed out on some great music back when it came out because of genre labeling. When I first heard the name grunge rock I thought that doesn't sound like it would be worth a crap.😆 But I finally got around listening to Pearl Jam and all of Chris Cornell's band incarnations and loved it. Sounded like just rock and roll to me. First time Cornell caught my ear was in the movie Collateral when the Audioslave song Shadow On the Sun started playing. His vocals and the song blew me away. Waited through the credits to find out who it was. In a couple of weeks time, I ended up buying everything I could find that featured him on vocals.

You don't hafta react to whole albums - you can pick out one or two tracks and pretend that's enough. BUT FOR YOUR LISTENING - you need to consume entire albums. Steely Dan is DEFINITELY an album band. ALL of them. And it's tough to appreciate these later albums without consuming their first ones. For one thing - each album has gems that will be YOUR favorite but were not radio-favorites. Don't cheat yourself - consume the whole albums, start to finish. Reward yourself.
