I won’t lie, it kind of chokes me up watching someone discovering Steely Dan and, in the moment, really appreciating the experience. Kudos to you, Jamel.
I commented almost the same thing on one of his other Steely Dan videos. It's like I'm reliving the beginning of my love for Steely Dan way back in the 70's. Great comment.
Say Word?! I came looking for exactly that mood elevation tonight after realizing I was hurtin a lil bit more than I thought. My mind was all over the place, dealing with some dark, stressful run-a-way thoughts. I played the original 1st...then watched his reaction vid. After my 2nd listen, and his joy of discovery...I was floating in the stratosphere.
My dad is such a huge Steely Dan fan that 20-25 years ago I can still remember that he listed his name in the phone book in Jackson Mississippi as Dan Steely, so his name would appear as “Steely, Dan” when you read it. I’m glad my pops is still here and I can still make memories with him. Steely Dan will always remind me of times with my dad
In this song, an older man is seducing a 19-year-old girl. He's a bit conflicted, as her inexperience frustrates him when she doesn't even remember Aretha Franklin. However, on this particular night and with the help of some Cuervo Gold tequila, everything is wonderful. Steely Dan used a variety of musicians on their albums. On this track, Hugh McCracken played guitar, Rick Marotta was on drums, and Victor Feldman and Steve Gadd added percussion. Walter Becker also added guitar, and Donald Fagen played the Fender Rhodes electric piano and the synthesizer. Roger Nichols, who was one of the engineers on the Gaucho sessions, fashioned a drum machine they used on this track. Dubbed "Wendel," it was one of the first of its kind, and it allowed them to record Rick Marotta's drum parts and play them back with perfect precision. The LM-1, which was the first programable drum machine sold to the public that sampled real instruments, was introduced in 1980, the year Gaucho was released, so many assumed that's what Steely Dan used. They didn't, but there was a connection. Roger Linn, who created the LM-1, told Songfacts: "By coincidence, Roger and I had both bought our first computers in around 1975 at a place called Computer Power and Light in Studio City, an area of Los Angeles. Wendel used that same computer and a early but high-quality digital audio interface, running a program he had written to enter simple looping beats on the screen. A very creative and talented guy." He’s an older guy, and being with a much younger woman of 19 initially makes him feel good, he feels younger, and confident because in his middle age, he can still attract beautiful young women; they can both enjoy the “Cuervo Gold” tequila and the “fine Columbian” cocaine, and that part is fun... but he’s finding out that beyond the fun partying they do together, they really haven’t much of anything in common at all, they don’t even have much to talk about. He’s finding out - with disbelief - that she’s so young, and so removed from his generation, that they aren’t in sync with each other, “we can’t dance together”... and that she doesn’t know the things which he thinks everyone should know, like who Aretha Franklin is, and he’s thinking, how is it possible that “she don’t remember The Queen Of Soul”...? so they can’t even do simple things together like listening to music. A classic Steely Dan track, and as usual, with a fantastic groove and great playing by the musicians, capped off with the stellar lyrics that Donald Fagan is known for. ❤️
SteelyDan timeless music, this will still be listened to 50 years from now, takes me back to some beautiful times,in Arizona with a very beautiful women.
Jamel, thank you for doing so many Steely Dan reactions. I was a kid when Steely Dan was big, but their music still hits me hard. I really feel like it's a shared experience listening with you, bro. Much love.
I was my husband's nanny. I was 17. He was 32. A yr later we married. Jamal U are my therapy.. I started watching these and I bought their whole body of work last week. They were so popular in the 70's There was so much great music then.
Dude, you have to give Boz Scaggs' "Lowdown" a whirl, with lyrics if possible. That has some Steely Dan players on it, Jeff Porcaro (drummer from Toto to name one ... RIP). Well worth it.
Can't go wrong with Silk Degrees in general. That album is good to listen to start to finish. Outside that album I also like JoJo . That is another good song.

Babylon Sisters by Steely Dan has maybe the most greasy groove of all time. And brings a tear, for real. That track should be on the Steely Playlist for you man...
Steve C Donald Fagen created one of the first drum machines which he named Wendel of all things. He did this so he could move each snare and kick hit independently and get everything exactly how he wanted it
@@ShamanWS6 Fagen and Becker complained to their engineer Roger Nichols that they wished there was a perfect drumming machine, and Roger told them he could build them one. So, they forked over $150,000 and Roger disappeared for a little while, and came back with a computer called Wendel. It was the world's first drum sampling machine. It was brutally difficult to program as it was all done in assembly language, but it worked. Gotta make this reference. If you've ever seen Half Baked.... " Have you ever listened to Steely Dan ? Have you ever listened to Steely Dan on Weed ? " I HAVE ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Who’s listening to this awesome tune in 2021 ???? Way way way better than anything playing on pop radio these days. Man SD just got me into a very positive and much needed good vibe during these tough times we’re living in. 👍👍
So Steely! Way back when, in '67, I was 15 years old, and the world was my oyster! When this was released in 1981, I already couldn't talk to 19. Now I'm so old I can't even talk to 59! Damn! I think it's time to put on the monk robes, and disappear into the forest. Bye, y'all !
Great reaction! You nailed it.. older guy seeing a younger girl, and how that isn't as easy as it might seem. This was from the last Steely Dan album (Gaucho) from the initial run, and was them at their most smooth and polished. Some people prefer their grittier stuff from the earlier albums - I personally think they peaked with Aja (the album before this one - with Peg, Deacon Blues, Josie, etc..), but do like this album a lot.
It's crazy to see someone NEW to Steely Dan and the fact that I couldn't picture my world, my childhood my music acumen my love and passion for music and SD having a MONUMENTAL influence on me. Albeit I'm 55 years old, I love that I have Steely Dan in my life and God Bless My Sister Beverly for introducing me to them. Rest In Peace Sis.
This is my absolute favorite song, I was introduced to Steely Dan by a much older man, a very good friend of mine, when I was 19. Ironic I know. But sho my whole world opened up that year and so many steely dan songs captured every memory I had becoming a musician and gigging and doing festivals - jamming this in the tour bus.
Lee Salerno I think it had to with cocaine which is produced a lot in Colombia. The late 1970’s early 80’s was the peak of the cocaine culture so to speak. Plus it was a very social drug that went well with hard liquor like tequila as implied in the song. The narrator ‘s use of cocaine and alcohol. Made him more confident and talkative with this 19 year old girl.
So happy you played this song, I have tried to find this song forever. "Hey Nineteen"???? Fine Colombian, Cuervo Gold, I worked for a bottled water company in the 90's and about 100 of us went to Lake Powell every year for over 10 years. Good times, good people, Drinkin, Fishin, the moon over the water with the sandstone listening to steely Dan. Thank you so much for the memories.
The funny thing is, that he says "She thinks I'm crazy but I'm just growing old"...yet when this song came out the singer Donald Fagen was only 32...which makes me feel old.
Don't worry! I'm 63 myself. We start growing backwards in age. Soon you'll eat soft food, need a diaper, sleep a lot, and like Seinfeld said, you'll have your last birthday party which will be just like your first birthday party: a cake with ONE candle in it, and a bunch of people you don't recognize; your parents/children will be telling you, "These are all your friends!"
Please check out Robert Cray, especially his 1st couple albums. Songs like Smoking Gun and Strong Persuader. And my fave I Shiver. And I Can't Go Home. ❤ Think you will fall in love with his talent. We love your videos ❤

I’m just thankful that I went to so many concerts back in the day because I sure as heck can’t afford the prices now🤦🏼♀️I may not remember who RC opened for, but I DO remember that I saw him and that he was FANTASTIC 🎸
The line about Aretha got overtaken by history 5 years after this song when the Queen of Soul had a big comeback with multiple top 10 hits and heavy rotation on MTV. So the "Hey Nineteen" girl would definitely have known about Aretha when she was 24, which is kind of amusing.
@mowgli2071 I'm not saying the irony of the song isn't spot on. (Steely Dan's favorite sport is mocking their own generation, after all). I just thought it was funny that 4 or 5 years later that same 19 year old would probably have MTV on and be hearing Pink Cadillac and Who's Zoomin Who a lot.
I danced to every song they did, swaying bumping grinded with the heart and soul of the players... Smiling from hours I was a bartender thru these years. Mother tended bar when I was kid. Music has been in my life for all 70 years of my life, and my 3 daughter life has been crazy good. Hugs to youJamal
I watched a great live video of the Doobie brother doing "Taking it to the streets" Michael McDonald playing some great piano. You should find it and do that reaction sometime, you'll love it.
The on-screen lyrics missed one - the "Hard times have befallen the SOUL Survivors" - the Philly band, who had the 1967 AM hit, Expressway To Your Heart. It's a shame when the lyric writers are also too young to remember!
This has always been one of my fave Steely songs. It’s filled with typical references to drugs and alcohol, which is typical Steely Dan. I never even noticed...only noticed their groove. 🌙💜

me mcm such a good song. Parker’s band and through with buzz are some others that are great.
Yes!
I'm a major dude and I approve of this request! 👍🍻😁
When the demon is at the door in the morning it won't be there noooooooo more.
Yesssss!!
I love Steely Dan! My favorite band of all time!
Hands down all time favorite Steely Dan! 💟☮️
Funny... Now that I'm 60, that song is even more profound. 🤣🤗✌️🙃
Drinking and...other things. “The fine Colombian” indeed.
Yeah! He skipped that Colombian reference. HAHAHA! I ain't hatin' on bro though. LOL!
Fine Colombian picture for reference plz
It was the ‘80s!
Ha ha
Columbian booger sugar
Donald Fagen's solo tracks "I.G.Y" and "New Frontier" are a perfect follow-up from "Hey Nineteen." From the same period.
I FREAKING LOVE "New Frontier"
Same! Looks like you're really wailing on that guitar...
Itelkner I.G.Y. Great song!
So much love for Steely Dan!!
' the Cuervo Gold, the fine Colombian, makes tonight a beautiful night,, , say it again!'
Steely Dan - Two against nature.. great song. Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands. I'm always in the mood for them..
GREAT POST Jamel! Thank you for posting this great song my brother! You are the man! 😍
Thank you for the LOVE Heart my Brother! I LOVE your videos! 😍
Jamel You need to react to Adam Levine doing Purple Rain, tribute to Prince at Howard Stern's Birthday party. He SHREDDED that song!!!
Gotta make this reference.
If you've ever seen Half Baked....
" Have you ever listened to Steely Dan ? Have you ever listened to Steely Dan on Weed ? "
I HAVE ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I am right now
You must listen to it on weed to truly feel it and maybe some tequila as well LOL!!
@@prosperitynow979
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I FEEL YA !

Swingtown as well
Great reaction!
The lyrics may get a little sleazy, but the music is always pure class.
The "Fine Colombian " Gold was the smoke of the 70s and 80s ;)
Lee Salerno I think it had to with cocaine which is produced a lot in Colombia. The late 1970’s early 80’s was the peak of the cocaine culture so to speak. Plus it was a very social drug that went well with hard liquor like tequila as implied in the song. The narrator ‘s use of cocaine and alcohol. Made him more confident and talkative with this 19 year old girl.
So happy you played this song, I have tried to find this song forever. "Hey Nineteen"???? Fine Colombian, Cuervo Gold,
I worked for a bottled water company in the 90's and about 100 of us went to Lake Powell every year for over 10 years. Good times, good people, Drinkin, Fishin, the moon over the water with the sandstone listening to steely Dan. Thank you so much for the memories.
Thank you for making this quarantine bearable today for this teacher in Ohio!
The funny thing is, that he says "She thinks I'm crazy but I'm just growing old"...yet when this song came out the singer Donald Fagen was only 32...which makes me feel old.
That's about the age you realize you're growin' old.
Dan Finnegan well compared to a 19 year old 32 IS old
@@marysaunders8079 Not for a famous, rich celebrity. lol ...
Well, 32 is a long way from 19
Hahaha, yeahh Jamal we was groovin’ for sure back in the day!😁 Steely Dan got some rhythms!
Lol, Jamel. You got the meaning. Like ny friend used to say "You're quick to catch on, no matter how long it takes!" 😁
That's my sh🤬t!!!!❤❤❤❤Love steely Dan...And still listening to him today!!!!!!
Please check out Robert Cray, especially his 1st couple albums. Songs like Smoking Gun and Strong Persuader. And my fave I Shiver. And I Can't Go Home. ❤
Think you will fall in love with his talent.
We love your videos ❤
Laurie, I saw Robert Cray open for Bon Jovi during the Slippery When Wet tour. HE WAS AH-MAZING!!!! I was blown away! My friend Cheryl didn’t care for him...and that blew me away even more!!!🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ HE tore that friggin guitar UP🎸🔥🔥Excellent guitarist and musician!Correction: RC could’ve possibly been opening for Huey Lewis and the News🤦🏼♀️I went to ALOT of concerts😊😆👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🎸🎸🎸
@@dianadollar758 I saw him in 1986! Opened for Huey Lewis and the News!
Absolutely, top pick
What a great idea, his songs are stories, perfect for this!
@Stephanie Wells ~ Maybe I saw Robert Cray with Huey Lewis and the News!🤪SlipperyWW came out in ‘86.🤷🏼♀️Who knows!
But nobody remembers The Soul Survivors tho... 🤣🤣🤣
Especially if she saw "Blues Brothers"
@mowgli2071 I'm not saying the irony of the song isn't spot on. (Steely Dan's favorite sport is mocking their own generation, after all). I just thought it was funny that 4 or 5 years later that same 19 year old would probably have MTV on and be hearing Pink Cadillac and Who's Zoomin Who a lot.

I watched a great live video of the Doobie brother doing "Taking it to the streets" Michael McDonald playing some great piano. You should find it and do that reaction sometime, you'll love it.

This was skating rink music back in the 70's. They always Steely Dan from this period at the rink. ( skate a little lower now)
If I close my eyes it is the 70's and I am at the rink skating to this song i grew up in a magical time
The on-screen lyrics missed one - the "Hard times have befallen the SOUL Survivors" - the Philly band, who had the 1967 AM hit, Expressway To Your Heart. It's a shame when the lyric writers are also too young to remember!

SD has so many great songs. This and "Do it again" are among my favorites.
Deacon blues
this song will always be relevant because this will be a shared experience til the end of time
Me too. 62 years old they are one of my go to bands.
Jamel, I would love to see your reaction to Steely Dan’s, “Glamour Profession”. I think you’re gonna love it!
One of my all time favorites!!
He says," I know y'all were groovin back in the day". Of course we were, where do you think all you kids came from.
This has always been one of my fave Steely songs. It’s filled with typical references to drugs and alcohol, which is typical Steely Dan. I never even noticed...only noticed their groove. 🌙💜
Love it, Jamel recognizing the soul in Steely Dan. 🔥
Don’t take me alive or caves of Altamira is a must . Dig a little deeper
Kelly Delay great choices!
Caves is one my faves, definitely, and King of the World.
I agree, don’t take me alive and caves are a deep dive but worth it. Even some of the unreleased stuff like second arrangement or kulee baba is great.
@@H0neybaby_23 Gotta save second arrangement and kulee baba for when you've already sessioned all the albums
@@drax13 yeah!! Those are my two favorites too 😍
I hope he keeps doing steely dan songs, I love watching his reactions
We need to put you in a time machine, so you can hang with us enjoying this amazing era of music. First beer is on me
