I have loved this music for 45 years. It is so beautiful to see you discovering it. Thank you. No, a Black Cow is just a sticky sweet fountain drink with milk plus either cola or root beer. "On the counter by your keys was a book of numbers and your remedies. One of these surely will screen out the sorrow but where are you tomorrow?" You know how people who are addicts are also often sugar fiends? I think that is what they are talking about here. The "book of numbers" could be either a betting book or a list of people to call for a fast hook up. Compulsive addictive behaviors are a theme in Steely Dan songs. See "Do It Again".
@@arribaficationwineho32 Actually, Donald Fagen DID sing on that track. There were two other artists who sang lead on "Can't Buy a Thrill": David Palmer on "Dirty Work" and "Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me)", and Jim Hodder on "Midnite Cruiser"

Steely Dan is another one of those really rare bands who just SOUNDS LIKE NO ONE ELSE. Or, rather--no one else sounds like they. And, Jamel--I totally love your reaction to them and others! So glad you appreciate them. You really do rock, yourself!
Steely Dan never fail man. So good. More Dan you should listen to: Green Earrings, Sign in Stranger, Don't Take me Alive.. Also, for something smooth AF check out Boz Scaggs - Jojo.
Hey Jamel: Your expressiveness puts a perfect, filled-with-awe 'visual face' onto all of these great songs. A very appropriate reaction to this music that so many of us folks -- who are maybe 20-25 years older -- are so passionate about. I was fortunate enough to have actually 'been there' when all of this amazing music was originally released. We are all the better for it. One suggestion: That great Producer for Atlantic Records, Thom Bell, wrote a one-off for a group named New York City, titled 'I'm Doin' Fine Now.' This song, with its' galloping drum and bass lines, really synthesizes and captures that certain feeling and soul, of the soul sound of the 1970's.
Boz Scaggs is the goods. That dude is smoooooov. Throw in "Jojo" for a very sophisticated song about a flashy pimp. And if you want to hear Boz taking your girl's panties off, "We're All Alone" or "Look What You've Done To Me."
I remember coming back to college after Christmas 1977 with this album in tow! My friends and I danced to the whole album in my tiny dorm room that first night back. Silly freshmen girls, having a blast, thanks to Steely Dan.
A few years ago a group formed for touring called Dukes of September. The tree main members were, Donald Fagan (Steely Dan), Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. You love the first two. It is time to hear the third. "Lowdown", "Lido Shuffle", "Georgia" and"Jojo" are some that you can start with.
Hello Jamal, I haven’t seen or heard you before but, I really appreciate your fresh take and reaction to a truly timeless classic! "Home at Last" is a must as Andrew said below.. Bernhard Purdie doing the Purdie Shuffle. His drumming in that song influenced Jeff Porcaro developing the beat for "Rosanna" by Toto.
Also Babylon Sisters
Home at Last is my favorite song by them, it stirs something in my soul
@@whitneygibson3431 Then you have excellent taste in music.
@@denisefiorelli5702 Indeed, an awesome California tune!
Once you hear Pretty Purdie, you’ll definitely understand his stratospheric confidence...never to be mistaken as arrogance! “You done it...you done hired the hit maker!”
The whole album Aja is a masterpiece but Black Cow is my favorite.
Agreed 100%!
Although, as a drummer, that damn Steve Gadd drum solo in "Aja" will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart...It's just ridiculously special!
Deacon Blues
Yes!!!!
deacon blues black cow peg
If people knew how much studio work Steely Dan did for other people!
Kahlúa, half-and-half, and Coca-Cola. "Black Cow", a song on Steely Dan's 1977 album Aja. A chocolate-covered caramel confection, Sugar Mama ..Hey Bro...keep up the great vids..new subscriber here Man ! God Bless !!
Law Dawg wished I had one right now 🧉
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_cow
Watch documentary on making of Aja on Netflix. You get the answer, there.
When I was a kid, my dad made what he called a black cow, a float using Coke and chocolate ice cream.
The alcohol drink is correct, but I recall an ice cream sundae called a " black cow", all vanilla/chocolate ice cream/syrup
My DUDE, back in the day - and even now, here in Cleveland, on the North Coast, this is an automatic GET UP AND HAND DANCE SONG. THIS IS REQUIRED LISTENING!! HOLLA!
Canton, Ohio here... 👍
No. Thats just what they called it on the East coast. Enjoying watching your reaction vids. These guys were awesome!!!!- theyve got boogie in their socks!
"Babylon Sisters" off the Gaucho album is another must hear!!!
Maybe not their best from a lyrical / substance standpoint, but yeah just talking about grooves yeah Babylon Sisters is fire.
my favorite!!!
Yougottoshakeitbabyyougottoshakeitbabyyougottoshakeit
Glamour Profession is one of my faves from that album
@@beantowne617 I like all of hat they do, just jazz and dash of funk,,, so smooth
Do “Home at Last” next, the best Purdie Shuffle ever.
in an album full of "favorite songs", Home at Last might be the favoritist!!
Or is it "Babylon Sisters"?
Purdie is awesome...
Home at Last is a killer tune....as is Black Cow......well, the list actually goes on ...and on...and on....
Even after all this time... you are still the best reactor... every once I a while I stumble on one I hadn't seen yet. 😊
Stank face over the keyboard, dayum. The “Dan” is one of the best ever.
2:55 man it's the truth, Aja is probably one of the greatest albums ever recorded.
There are very few perfect albums... front to back... Aja is for sure one of them. 👍
not probably...definitely! 🙂🙏
Their lyrics are out of this World.
Jamal, you are a brother like no other! I'm 68 and love listening to your reactions. Well done sir, well done.
Steely Dan, Dirty Work, another one of their best!
YES!
Jamel? SD is so rhythm inventive and thoughtful that your hands, feet and body know what to do immediately. Great song.
Steely Dan's WHOLE catalog of music is superb and unequaled!!
"These damn thieving-ass rappers, they done took everything! Dayum!" That's gold right there! Hey YT, can I hit the like button more than once, please?
Lazzy ars bastards is more the mark....
Also Steely Dan used a Michael McDonald sample just like hip hop does.
@@juiceplanet147 Michael McDonald sang back up for them in the studio on more than one occasion and toured with them ... so I am not sure what you mean by “sampling” 🤔
I soooooo wish we could hit the dayum like button more than once 😂
@@rachel-in-the-208 When reality gets scrambled and creating is confused with sampling...
AJA is one of my many favorites. I love EVERY song on the CD. This band is off the charts crazy great.
I've been a backup singer my whole life. RESPECT to you for taking notice!!!!!!
Smooth like butter on ya breakfast toast.
Steely dan and boz sqaggs were my favorites back in the mid 70's. Ty!
And Chicago and Tower of Power and Little Feat😊😊
Reelin in the Years was one of their biggest hits, and for good reason.
Fagan didn't sing that and didn't want a singer. Label didn't like his voice so made them have a frontman. That lasted until they got recognized
@@arribaficationwineho32 Actually, Donald Fagen DID sing on that track. There were two other artists who sang lead on "Can't Buy a Thrill": David Palmer on "Dirty Work" and "Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me)", and Jim Hodder on "Midnite Cruiser"
the rap group that sampled this song, or many parts is:
Lord Tariq & Peter Guns - "Deja Vu" (uptown baby)
Also MF Doom used the opening line is (I’m 99%) Gas Drawls
Love Steely Dan. Old college days.
There will never be another Steely Dan. There's talent and then there's gifted talent; they were incredibly unified in their process as well as patient until they achieved exactly what they wanted.
“Humble Thyself “. Your shirt compelled me to subscribe. Oh yeah, I also like these recent choices, intelligent music is a richer experience for your soul to feed on.
Lmao, you a fool. Great reaction. Steely Dan is incredible. Paraphrasing Garland Nixon, Steely Dan is like listening to the universe. BTW, a "Black Cow" is indeed a cocktail.
I normally don't like reaction channels/videos, but dude I'm loving your energy, and subbed.
RUDYS!!!!!! 9th ave and 43rd st. NYC.
Been there many times. Stuck in the past. Cool time warp type of old bar.
Now you've got me wishing that I'd stopped in at Rudy's when I was in town and have some Cuervo Gold!
Free hot dogs!
I come back to Steely Dan now only to discover that they were even greater than I had ever realized...And until I make my way out of this life I'll always be grateful that I was fortunate enough to have had SD be so invaluable a part of it.
You have got to do FM. The song just flows like a wave length, no static at all.
^THIS!!!!
The Nightfly too
No static at all!!!😎
I agree but which of the 4 versions do you have him listen to? Since you know the song, check out this link for some mind blowing Dan action ruclips.net/video/316mipUnA-M/видео.html
The boys don't seem to care...
We tried to tell you dude that every cut on the Aja album will have you listening with the stink face. Every cut. #NoFiller
EVERY. Cut.
scoonman Every.
Damn.
Cut.
Aja is probably one of my favorite albums of all time. Of any band.
You make the stink face on every track, then flip the record, and again on every track, then you flip the record AGAIN and do it all over again... EVERY TIME.
The Dan.
So true
I miss these videos so much
'Josie' and 'Home At Last' from the same album are also killer!
Baz Jackson the whole album is killer 😎
@@dougefresh7765 with you on that! 🙂🔥
Steely Dan is another one of those really rare bands who just SOUNDS LIKE NO ONE ELSE. Or, rather--no one else sounds like they. And, Jamel--I totally love your reaction to them and others! So glad you appreciate them. You really do rock, yourself!
I love the fender rose paino in the song. Smooth...
Steely Dan never fail man. So good.
More Dan you should listen to: Green Earrings, Sign in Stranger, Don't Take me Alive..
Also, for something smooth AF check out Boz Scaggs - Jojo.
I second Green Earrings strongly!!!
+1 to everything you said, but especially "Green Earrings."
Caves of Altamira
Still on the Dan. “Babylon Sisters “ should be next or “Hey Nineteen “
Dude give me a break. Is the only album you own Greatest Hits?
Ram4 every song is a greatest hit
I love Dr Wu as well.
Babylon Sisters and Green Earrings
Did someone mention Babylon Sisters?
Black Cow drink....coffee liqueur, milk & coke in a highball glass filled with ice..The Dan forever!
Hey Jamel:
Your expressiveness puts a perfect, filled-with-awe 'visual face' onto all of these great songs.
Boz Scaggs "Lowdown" "Lido Shuffle"
Lowdown? That's a great one too. Brings back a lot of good memories from the 70's. GOD THE MUSIC FROM THE 70's WAS AWESOME!
Agreed. The sound is all in the same family. I predict Jamel will love it too!! /d
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!
Boz Scaggs is the goods. That dude is smoooooov. Throw in "Jojo" for a very sophisticated song about a flashy pimp. And if you want to hear Boz taking your girl's panties off, "We're All Alone" or "Look What You've Done To Me."
Joe Day Remember, Look What You’ve Done was in the movie Urban Cowboy. The hi rise apartment scene.
I second this. Lido or JoJo!
And Miss Sun 🥰
@@susanslade4044 ooooh yes!!!
Saw the dukes in Boston just a STELLAR show
Boz is a king
Hello Jamal, I haven’t seen or heard you before but, I really appreciate your fresh take and reaction to a truly timeless classic!
I see you as an innovator who can take credit for bringing great classics to this generation and also for helping to destroy the imposed ethnic barriers that sometimes take place nowadays between music genres and closed-minded people. Also love your sweatshirt message!!
Well done!!
My late husband worked for an FM radio station...loved Steely Dan. I'm 69 years old and the music was rockin then and rockin now.
“It is a damn root beer float” about fell out of my chair on that one 🤣😂 You have definitely seen the light!
