Steely Dan is a vibe, a genre of their own. Enjoy
My favorite band! These guys are pure gold 😌
Mine too, for 40 years.
Love the Dan,man 😊
Mine too. For just about 40 also.
Mine as well; always will be ❤
Gold. THIS is music
I still get goosebumps after 45 years, esp when the harmonies come in.
I am thrilled that younger generations are appreciating Steely Dan! Their music will live on. The best composers, using some of the best musicians ever. Musical perfection always.
Everyone I’ve seen so far on RUclips that try out The Dan can’t stay away from them! Polo with be hooked in a couple of months if he hears a few more of their famous hits!
I know a few youngsters that love The Dan thats what they call it.
The entire Aja album is a masterpiece. The extended length title track stands alone as a unique expertly cradted blend of rock, jazz, and R&B styling. The grear Wayne Shorter plays two sax solos, while drummer Steve Gadd plays along right behind him with the most amazing drum fills and counterpoint.
This person speaks the truth. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform this entire album live many years ago. It was excellent.
The entire career is a masterpiece
Steely Dan is one of my all time favorite groups. Enjoy the journey! Check out Peg, Deacon Blues, My Old School, Kid Charlemagne and so many more! They don’t have a bad song! 💖😎
Ohhhh just ❤ Deacon Blues!
2 main guys at the helm and the rest are the best studio musicians around. Some of the best songs every recorded.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Steely Dan. Walter Becker and Donald Fagan are musical geniuses, not to mention the expert, best of the best, studio musicians who have played with them over the years. You are in for the best jazz, rock, funk fusion ever made.
Real music. Melody, harmony and soul. You can't go wrong with Steely.
Full disclosure . . . I am an old, White, music geek. I hope that won't discount what I am about to say. I was lucky in that, I was raised listening to all kinds of music, big band, Jazz, classical, country, rock and classic "soul" music. I also had the experience of seeing many of the greats (jazz, rock, soul and classical) artists in concert, including Steely Dan! The young reactors I watch on YT seemed to have been raised in a musical environment of mainly hip-hop and rap where melody and chord progressions have been consciously eliminated to emphasize rhythm and lyrics. I notice however, when these young people hear Steely Dan, Luciano Pavarotti, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc., they always seem excited and love the experience, even if they cannot express why. My free advice (and worth every penny), is ask your mom and dad, uncles and aunts, older family friends, what music they listened to growing up. And then go listen to it. It will lead you down interesting, unexpected, enjoyable musical paths. Best regards.
More nourishment for your musical soul than any band you will ever hear. Harmonically complex, rhythmically incredible, melodically rich, lyrically intriguing. What a band.
YES!!! Greater than any band that ever existed!! It was always an ALLSTAR group of studio musicians that recorded these songs. Their greatest songs are Peg and Kid Charlemagne BUT alll their music is incredible. Aja, & Hey Nineteen are incredible too
I jammed with Larry Carlton at an open mic jam, I didnt even know who he was but he was amazing in a live setting and my friends father told me after the set you just jammed with one of the best, I had no idea then but I do now.
Steely Dan is arguably one of the most underrated musicians/bands ever. If you like complex musical masterpieces with lyrics that have deeper, meaningful undertones, they are chill, bluesy, jazzy and are at home being played into your head phones as much as in your car on a night ride on cool autumn night.
Steely Dan is arguably one of the most rated musicians/bands ever.
Who's underrating Steely Dan? Nobody who's ever listened to them.
Stamping out the overuse of “underrated,” one comment at a time 😄
I don't think you can call most great musician's favorite band "underrated". Just sayin'
Basically session players who are on the top of their game.
A traditional Black Cow is made from Root Beer, chocolate syrup, and Vanilla ice cream. It can also be made from Root beer, evaporated milk and bourbon, if you want to spice it up.
We have little doubt that the fallen woman in the song is drinking the alcohol version of a Black Cow
@@007ndc Oh, no doubt.
Ingredients For Orginal Black Cow
2 Tbsp
chocolate syrup
1 c
coca-cola
1 Tbsp
cream
1 scoop
chocolate ice cream
I’ve been a SD fan for 45 years but, not being American, I didn’t get a lot of these kind of references. So now I know black cow is a really awful concoction of ingredients meant to be drank, for pleasure??? Knowing that, It’s still my least favourite SD song even though the album is great. I need to check out this guy when he listens to almost anything else by SD, especially stuff that is really funky and soulful unlike this track. I think he will be delighted.
Zaktly.
Black Cow is a drink. Like Chocolate Milk. This song is so layered and tight, great example of these fantastic group of musicians and of course Donald Fagan. Smooth, Funky, Unique with rich soulful harmonies with the B/U singers. You simply can not capture it all without listening multiple times. Take the time and enjoy.
You’re gonna LOVE Steely Dan. You have good ear and appreciation of complex composition and this album is a great place to start. Not only is it tight musically, but for a long time was considered the standard for testing your stereo because the production value was sooo good
First time I heard a CD play was this album. You can hear instruments in the track that you can't otherwise on a less quality system. Can't remember the song but there it is, ever so quiet, a harmonica,
@@dougww1ectebow my friends dad had this on cassette and a sweet home stereo with a tape deck in their basement. I always remember how clear the little drumstick clack in the middle of the solo on Aja was.
@@matthaft2048 Indeed this was a gem of a recording. SD at their best.
I still use this album when adding or changing anything to my system.
STILL IS!
Big Black Cow refers to a milk shake.
Welcome to the Steely Dan rabbit hole!
Their music is so timeless! That track is 45 years years old! It still blows me away every time I hear it!
I thought it was a root beer float
I always thought they were commenting on the "Brown Cow" which was very popular in the mid 70's especially in L.A. Perhaps it has a lot more Kahlua in it than milk making it black?
Thought it was Kaluia and milk, sombreo
The song "FM" was the first song I remember hearing by them. Funk to the core, but smooth as silk! It was also my first sip of wine. :) Good times ! Love yall ❤
FM is so fantastic...enjoyed the wine comment. Cheers!
Thanks Theresa :) No Static At All
Nothin but blues and Elvis.........
Steely Dan used a level of jazz-like sophistication in its harmonies and arrangements no other group could even think of achieving. Heck, if you keep your ears open and your spirit adventurous, you might attempt John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra! “Meeting of the Spirits.” Your brain will explode!
Oh man Steely Dan is easily one of the most dialed in bands ever!! Easily up there for the greatest album ever written! One of the most infectious grooves ever, I cant help but smile the whole time lol
Steely Dan can be ridiculously mellow, but it's always a musical treat. Every album is so well made and all the musicians are so talented.
Released my senior year of high school. Simply one of the best albums ever recorded.
Right there with ya….

Tom Scott was definitely on top of his game for this album! GREAT horn arranging and performance from him and all the other greats on this album!
Nice Christmas present. I am glad you liked this. You are right, it was 1977. Steely Dan is their own musical genre. Elements of jazz/funk/blues/rock/r&b/soul, etc. SD is one of the most revered bands in history. Total perfection in the studio and they only used the best musicians on a rotating basis for each album and many times for each song in an album. Tough to tell you where to start with them. Many fans feel that the album Aja is their best. Black Cow is from that album. The song Aja is looked at, by many fans as their best but an argument can be made for so many others. The album The Royal Scam is brilliant too. Try Aja next for a completely different feel from Black Cow. Thank you for reacting to this. 👏🙏🔥
Courtesy of Wikipedia. The personnel on this song is like a who’s who of greatness:
Black Cow"
Donald Fagen - lead vocals, synthesizer
Paul Humphrey - drums
Chuck Rainey - bass guitar
Victor Feldman - Fender Rhodes
Joe Sample - clavinet
Larry Carlton - guitar
Tom Scott - tenor saxophone
Clydie King, Sherlie Matthews, Venetta Fields, Rebecca Louis - backing vocals
At 17 my boyfriend and I drove up Australia's east coast listening to a greatest hits, I was amazed, never heard anything like it. It flowed with the roads and my positive mood. 😊
"AJA" was album of the year when it was released in 77. Many of the tunes were played on the radio along with tunes from all their other albums.
PS: It is important to dissect the lyrics. The songs may sound happy and sweet, but the words are often of underworld, nefarious subjects. Also a bit cryptic where some words have alternate meanings.
Even... um, the name of the band... Double entendre.
Steely Dan had a lot of songs like that. One that comes to mind is Here At The Western World, an upbeat song about Nazi drug kingpins in South America
@@kenjohnston1257 Do you know what Chain Lightning is about? 😃
@@CuriousGeorge1111 Not really no, do you happen to know?
@@kenjohnston1257 As a fellow SD fan, you might enjoy this subversive slice of life.
Chain Lightning is about two Nazis
who meet Hitler at a rally:
"Some turnout, a hundred grand
Get with it we'll shake his hand"
Then sneak back 40 years later to savor the memory:
"We're standing just where he stood
It was chain lightning, it feels so good"
And here's another clue for you all: the SS "lightning bolt" symbol looks like... lightning.
SD, the gift that keeps giving. 😇
This band is the smoothest bourbon. Find a quiet space, get comfortable and float off into the unique vibe that Becker and Fagen create.
I agree, but Steely Dan prefers Cuervo Gold, and some fine Columbian😉
@@rileyjackfansmithandjones8238 no doubt. I can sing every word to every song on this album. Takes me back to the latter part of the 1970s… Life is good!
Damn right
@@UBZUKki Nice… I am your 69th subscriber according to the log! I just couldn’t help myself.
Nice…
… to meet you I hope you have a great day, Cheers too! DT
Welcome to Dan Land, my friend ~ go back to 1973 and work your way forward ~ you won't regret it! Thanks to the person who requested this ! 💞
This. And WELCOME!!
AjA is the best album ever recorded. It is so good the Drummer of Boston named his Daughter Aja.
I love Steely Dan! My dad and I went to a concert several years back, he always loved them and introduced me. I think he said the Black Cow was a chocolate milkshake?? Check out the full album Aja … if you like this track there’s lots more to enjoy. Love your videos! ❤ Merry Christmas! 🎄
Steely Dan is just laid back, chilled funk from the 70s and early 80s.
Donald Fagan on Keyboards and Walter Becker on guitar, with a plethora of musical virtuosos making up the superb rich sound.
Great as background music for a group of friends with a few drinks, or just mellow out with a cigar or fat blunt, bottle of good whiskey,, or port, and go on the funk journey 👍👍
Peace brother Polo
Just got back from Christmas Dinner, bout to jam with POLO. Let's do it.
ahhh man, you broke the seal! You began in the middle, this entire album is epic just please go the beginning of Steely Dan and hear it like We did...This is why I subscribed to you, to watch you discover all this great music, you have many years to catch up with! Thanks, you will not be disappointed
Broke the seal indeed 🤣 such a good journey!!
Yes Steely Dan and my favorite song
Steely Dan a great band from the 70’s fun times!
Favorite Band ❤ Love all their songs just sit back and enjoy❤
A black cow is a float made of a&w root beer and vanilla ice cream. It's mate is the Boston cooler, made with Vernor's ginger ale and vanilla ice cream. Those are both Detroit and Midwestern things.
Here where I live the black cow is what you could get at the local a&w. It wasn't a float but they blended the ice cream in to the root beer instead of having it sit on top. 🐄
We learned it differently. Using A&W is just a root beer float.
To make a Black Cow use Cola, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate syrup.
You forgot the Kahlua. The best part.
UPTOWN BABY
Dude, the session musicians that played on these albums in the 70's and early 80's were insanely good. Check out Atlanta Rhythm Section if you wanna hear some ridiculously good musicians just grooving.
Edit: "Josie" is another fantastic cut off this album.
@spddiesel Yes! I love ARS! "Homesick", "So Into You" and "Spooky" are my favorites by them.
Josie; GREAT track!
Raymond is not wrong. Also might be related to Donald?
@@murdo4243 wrong spelling, but it sounds the same so another reason I dig Steely Dan 😉🤘🎶
Grew up on Steely Dan and Bob James both heavily sampled just about much as James Brown. Listen to the layering of the front vocals and background ones how they overlap and fade out and then front vocals come back
This is an awesome rabbit hole to jump into! What a diverse collection - Can’t wait for more!
Just love it! I’m an 80 year old Rockschool student and have selected this song for my Grade 6 Autumn bass exam. Listening to you’re video commentary helped me build up my ‘feel’ for this jazz rock song .Thank you.
Dive into the Steely Dan rabbit hole. Great music!
So outrageous.
Sounds like Wayne Shorter on the sax. Just a great group, nothing but the best musicians participated.
It's Tom Scott
"Now I get it..." The perspective of maturing life and experience. Mahalo plenty for reminding me of that super-cool, smooth yet irreverent friend of my 70s youth...The Dan. There is no "bad" song, just another valuable and disturbing view inside our 70s world. My favs: FM---Green Earrings---The Caves of Altamira---Kid Charlemagne---Babylon Sisters--Haitian Divorce--The Fez---Aja---Night by Night---Bodhisattvah. Anything from Don Fagen's solo Album: The Nightfly. A hui hou!
Nice reaction. You have a whole new world to explore with Steely Dan.
Steely Dans "Deacon Blues" is a must to react to. You'll love it. From the Aja album.
one of the greatest songs ever recorded by anybody. Period.
Steely Dan is just a good time period.
We just saw them last Summer with our kids who are also big fans. Great band!
This rabbit hole is very deep.
Ha! Steely Dan reminds me of my dad. I love "Black Cow". It's probably one of my faves by them. "It's over now. Drink your big black cow and git outta heeeaaahh."
Heeeeaaaahhhh lol my fam and I always over exaggerate this when singing along 🥰 😆
@@digitaldorothy You all are doing it the correct way lol
I LOVE Steely Dan! ❤️
For more Steely Dan, check out Do it Again as your next song. It was their first big hit.
Best Elevator Music ever. I have a SD playlist that never fails to put me to sleep
One of the greatest songs ever!
My girlfriend loved these guys in the 80's! I was into heavy metal. Now this is true music. Love it. Laid back a lot to be dissected.
Beautifully structured song as is most of their music
Glad you know/heard the sample for the Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq. I like how this song shocks people who know the hip hop song, but don't know the original. Very good vibes w/ the song, great reaction!!
"Uptown Baby,Uptown Baby!" Boy did, Steely Dan make some cash from this track!
This’s what my dad requested to listen to on his way out along with Van Morrison he was old school…but I have a very different appreciation for Steely Dan & Van
Van Morrison and Steely Dan are my top 2, also. Both are unique in their own way.
I’ve loved Steely Dan since the seventies when I first heard my best ever song: “Reeling in the years”!
There was a period in the late 70’s I could listen to Steely Dan all day. I mean all day.
I have this on vinyl! It's such a fun album to do all my chores to. :)
It has been said many times, Steely Dan is your favorite band’s favorite band!!!
You are listening to Greatness from the the Great Steely Dan 💫❤️☝️
This is track 1 from the album Aja. Just do the whole thing. The song Aja is next, then Deacon Blues, Peg and hit the last track Josie as well. You’re going to love Steely Dan. The best studio session musicians of the era are all over these tracks. You’ll hear some Michael MaDonald on the backing vocals as well. Definitely in Peg. Another rabbit hole for sure.
Stick around..😎🎸.. beyond cerebral and absolutely excellent
Quite possibly the best album ever made. Everything they’ve ever recorded is pretty close to perfect.
Led zep 4
Aja
Close to the edge
Graceland
Shadows and light (joni love with Jaco and metheny)
5 more or less perfect discs
Absolutely agree!
This is a flashback!!!! So long ago!!!! I loved Steely Dan in the old days.
I love their music.🎶🎵
Steely Dan is blend of jazz fusion and classic rock in my opinion. I grew up with this music and always considered classic rock because we usually heard it on that genres' radio stations
Love it....🎸🎶✌️🐰
**** You must have been living under a rock. They are THE BEST!
Many Rappers and Hip Hop artists sampled Steely Dan
Spotify listeners for Steely Dan in 2022: Top 0.001% ❤😍😍 that’s how much I love Steely Dan 😊
Yep. This soothes my OCD. Finding that silky groove…
Happy Holidays all y’all 🍻
Who Is Steely Dan??..WOW,, Do You Have An Epic Musical Journey Ahead Of You & Getting To Hear/Experience Incredibly Talented Musicians,, Other Artists Strive To Even Be Half As Good.
Steely Dan are a vibe.
groups like Steely Dan , ELP, early Genesis , Yes and others were great , creative musicians able to entertain well individually so when introduced to new material by a band member they would ask the other members to create an enhancement for the works. thanks for reacting to the music of my youth
Superb song and made with such light, precise touches: it never needs to raise its voice to get through. The key change at the end of the last chorus (just before 7:00 here), as it slips towards the outro solo, feels like the point where the difficult partner (girlfriend? wife? other love interest?) he's been talking to and engaging all through the song finally got up and left the room, leaving a sense of relief
A Black is is a drink made of: Combine 1/2 cup of evaporated milk with 2 cups of root beer (your choice on the brand but we used A&W Root Beer for this particular one) and 2 ounces of your favorite bourbon. Mix then split between two tall cocktail glasses.
Add ice to fill the glass. I'm a baby-boomer, so this song came in 1977 when I was a Senior in High school. Brings back a lot of memories.
One of my most favorite bands ever. I had this album and played it all the time. You are sure reacting to some really good music lately!
Over 300 takes to make this masterpiece.Glad you like it
Rikki Don’t Lose That Number
I love to watch these guys discover what has already been there exclamation mark
Steely Dan had a very diverse catalog....kind of a rock/jazzy fusion. My personal favorites are Reeling in the Years, Bohdisattva, Deacon Blues and Hey 19.
Welcome to the club! There’s no turning back now!
They spanned from the 70s to now. Sooo much to discover. Black Cow is one of my faves. Check Babylon Sisters, Deacon Blues, FM, Josie, The Fez
First Pink Floyd, now Steely Dan! You're really on a roll!! This is one of my top 5 albums of all time! Glad you will follow down the rabbit hole! Well worth it! I'd try Home at Last and Aja from this album and then Do It Again from their first album!!
The whole AJA Steely Dan album is classic rock, funk and jazz. Simply the best.
Steely Dan is well worth a binge listen. Pretty awesome 70s funk vibe. They've always been one of my favorites, and I'm disappointed more people don't give them a listen.
Long time ago you would hear Steely Dan regularly on am pop music radio stations. Do It Again, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, My Old School, Reeling In The Years, all those relatively early songs.
@mikemilne - Ah... the memories of chillin long, long ago. Those songs were fantastic, but simply just letting those entire albums play... Aja... Pretzel Logic... Royal Scam... Gaucho... those were the best of times!
I always get feels from the line "I'm the one who must make everything right / talk it out till daylight." I think everyone who's ever been in a relationship has had that experience.
The whole album is a gem! One of my favorite albums all time! No genre. Just great music!
I grew up with Steely Dan ..thank you momma I love your taste in 🎵🎶...Peg is my favorite
Big black cow, sweet chocolatey goodness.
Chocolate ice cream root beer and liquor.
back in the day you wanted to get a girl's attention you just plugged in the Steely Dan a track. Lol
With one hit after another Deacon blues or Don't Take Me Alive would be my favorite's.

I lived in California for many years ba ck in the 70's and 80s and you ordered a BLCAK COW in a bar it was usually Kahlúa and cream. In the non alcoholic world it is a root beer float.
One of the best albums ever!
Solid Gold!
Aja was released in Sept 1977. The year I graduated high school.
Black Cow - 1/2 cup evaporated milk, 1 bottle (16oz) root beer and 2 shots bourbon. Adjust ingredients to taste.
If you like horns try out "Mercenary territory" off of the live album "Waiting for Columbus" by Little Feet. They are accompanied by 'The Tower of Power' An R&B band and horn section . I saw your reaction to Dixie Chicken. Excellent!
