Haitian Divorce
Black Friday. Certified banger.
Black Friday
The Royal Scam
Pretzel Logic
!!!!
@@joejohnson1094 Out of a stellar catalog Haitian Divorce stands out so much for it's unique sound. That Talkbox guitar is so well done without being overdone.
You should do the song every real Steely Dan fan knows is Walter Becker' s cry from the depths of hell of his heroin adduction, Doctor Wu. You don't understand Sttely Dan if you don't understand this song.
Still can't believe you haven't checked out one of their biggest hits "Don't Take Me Alive". Opens with the nastiest chord ever put down on a Steely Dan record with amazing guitar solo featuring Larry Carlton. Banger!
Best guitar intro ever...
Ever.......!!
Absolutely love that track, nasty guitar work!!!
Agreed!
Absolutely!!! 😎
There's nothing like Steely Dan. They're magic.
Uh Green Earrings. I've only recommended it like 100 times. 😊
@@eileendobbs8009 lol
This song is at the heart of the theory that "The Big Lebowski" is partially an homage to Steely Dan. The "Dude" in the song title. The fact that the Dude's buddies were "Walter" and "Donnie." (Becker and Fagan) and the bartender's name was "Gary" (as in Katz).
🤔
I am a huge fan of the band and the film, and this is the first I have heard of this theory. Cool.
New sh*t has come to light man
Steely Dan abides
Never heard this. You've made my day
Any major dude would tell anyone that Steely Dan was in a league of their own.
The best thing about Steely Dan is everyone has a different favorite Steely Dan song. Name another band with as much consistency as them. Every song is amazing in its own way,
For me, aside from the obvious kings of melody, variety and consistent excellence, The Beatles, Supertramp is the group that tries different things and succeeds with each of their songs between 1974-82.
Indeed. “Showbiz Kids” comes to mind. 1 of many.
Ah Pretzel Logic. For those Dan Fans out there, you can understand why this tune nudged me back down the Steely Dan rabbit hole. Every album is pure perfection.
When I was in college in the early '90s, I had a friend who was semi-prone to panic attacks. I wrote this chorus on her mirror in dry-erase pen.
What an amazing thing to do for a friend.
Oh wow!
❤
You’re sweet
This is Peak Dan. No arguments. A small, but flawless gem.
Love peak Dan. Threw my Two against nature away. Like why would I ever listen to that again when I have their whole catalogue?
Thank you, thank you, thank you guys! This is my favorite Steely Dan song. I haven't watched your reaction yet because I was so exited that I had to comment first. Hope you love it as much as I do.
Right there with you.
LOVE the song.
You must hear Bodhisattva. It's pure joy.
I’d heard it a way while back and then showed it to Alex on a stream some time ago!
There's a little Allman Brother in Steely Dan's catalog - who knew it?
I'm wearing my Bodhisattva t-shirt now. Got it last summer while Fagan & co were on tour. Awesome in person as well as on vinyl, and any other format Steely Dan might exist within.
This is the gold standard for compassion toward addiction (when the demon is at your door) and hardship in general. Music gives back with voluntary PSAs. Thank you Steely Dan, Skynyrd, Marvin, Curtis, Neil, et al.
And Charley Freak, on the same album.
Its always a good day when Andy & Alex hits Steely Dan again.
Pure fucking genius. I don't think I've ever heard a bad song by the Dan. The attention to detail is extraordinary. The little touches and fills here and there by various instrumentation. This song, case in point, is so simple, yet the arrangement, the progressions, and the satisfaction are second to none. One of those rare upper-tier bands that just never gets lazy or complacent. Excellence.
Any minor World that falls apart falls together again. Poetic af and astronomically grounded. Leave it to the Dan to blend the two!
Any minor world that BREAKS apart FALLS together again. That's literally HEAVY, man.
Technically, Any Major Dude Will Tell You is making fun of the way Californians talk. But it is poetic and sympathetic (unusual for a SD song).
@@jml-rj5re The lyrics attempt to comfort the singer's friend who is going through a difficult time.
@@glenndespres5317 I'm well aware. The phraseology was a play on SoCal lingo. D&W were from the NYC metro area.
I'm here for The Dan. Boys we need more of The Dan. Don't Take Me Alive is a great guitar song.
Awesome song!
Its Donald Fagans voice , just so expressive .... icing on a very large perfect cake.
I just recently heard Donald say that his biggest regret was not hiring Michael McDonald to do ALL of the singing.
I think that would have been a huge mistake. Donald's voice has so much more expansive and nuanced.
Back in the day, they were known as your favorite band's favorite band. Your not going to find a bad song.
The Fez is pretty bad.
@@frankieboy8414 Not their best for sure.
When all other music fails, there is ALWAYS Steely Dan. My go to band. Not a bad song ever.
And all other music will eventually fail. The Dan though is unbreakable.
Two against nature sucked lemon ballz. All of it. I’d say it to Donald’s face. He wouldn’t care, they made it for themselves, not us. And I see nothing wrong with that.
Yes 🙌🏽 more steely dan
One of my favorite Steely Dan tunes. We all need that friend who will be honest with us when we are heading down the wrong path. Great reaction guys!
The "If they were in a video store, they'd be behind a curtain" should be a sticker on every Steely Dan album, like a book jacket blurb.
Ah, perfect choice. 14 year old me got this album for Christnas and I played it over and over on my little monoural record player. My older brother knew I would love it. I still do. Thanks Greg, I miss you so much.
I am so happy to see you react to this. I haven't watched it yet, but I know you loved it! Steely Dan just couldn't write or perform a bad song!
“If they were in a video store they’d be behind the curtain” LOL - Alex you are the king of the one-liners.
"Taintedly sad but, not enough to care" OMG! the best line ever! Love you guys😘
You can't go wrong with Steely Dan. I'm always gonna be here for it. 🥰
That little riff at the end of the chorus is so beautiful... It never fails to get me.
Excellent point.
Becker and Fagen: Musical masters of the heavenly hook and the perfect pop passing chords, combined with melodies from the gods!...and, that's BEFORE one digests their sublime lyrics and phrasing. Genius. Simply genius.
one of my favorite steely dan songs. i am old, but i remember when my kids were young they asked me what a major dude was. i tried to explain my perception was that a major dude was a person known to be of strong character and worthy of respect.
Gotta do Showbiz Kids. Every time I hear it I sing it on repeat for the rest of the day. An exceptionally funky groove.
I’m 75 and I’ve been listening to Steely Dan for over 50 years , one of great pleasures in a long life of music . Larry from Glasgow 😎
Try Brooklyn Knows the Charmer guys. Different vibe with the slide guitar. Wonderful and underappreciated
Steely Dan always! My favorite is "FM", ok, can't say favorite because I absolutely love this group, but "FM" is darn good. Well done, guys.
One of my favorite Steely Dan songs, but I can probably say that about more than half of their catalog.
Seems like the both of you, Alex and Andy, have that type of cemented friendship which mirrors the meaning of this song.
And....this is a DEEP cut of their music. This album was the first SD album I purchased with my own money earned from cutting neighbors lawns, watering, painting, and pulling weeds. I played this album until the grooves on the vinyl disc were deep. I LOVE this album like its my 5th child. There are so many SD songs that are not their "Hits" but exude the emotion of a band that is meticulous with every aspect of their music; regardless of whether it's a "Hit" or not.
Thank you, Thank you, thank you for reacting to this, I have been waiting! A definite favorite, whenever I am down, one of the songs I go to. A real gem.
I don’t understand why you guys don’t have 400K subs. You guys are great to watch! 😁
One of my favorites from the best. I love the acoustic fills. They know how to change up keys and rhythms. Any major dude with half a heart surely will tell you my friend…
Incomparable. Period.
I must have listened to this song hundreds of times (I've even sung it a few) but it just never gets old. They are just great.
I have to say, guys, with all your reactions I've watched this one is right up there as one of my favorites. As a Dan fan, I always love when your generation is appreciating the very thing we "old timers" have known for 50+ years...they're just so damn good!
What's nice is that they get it.
My favorite one too
I love Steely Dan all their music. I have every single one of their LPs. I graduated high school in 1975.
I hope you enjoy it. I just started watching it. You guys are the best.
I have hope for the younger generation😂
I’m 66 years old ☮️💜🔮
I just had my 50 year High School reunion, SD was non stop on my 8 track.
Better yet, my HS mate, Jeff Porcaro got hired to play drums with the Dan! I got to listen to and hang out with my favorite band, SD in 1974. Katy Lied will always be my sentimental favorite.
Toto were my HS friends, including their engineer. Go figure.
Next is "Show Biz Kids," because they got the Steely Dan t-shirts, brutal slide guitar, and back alley garbage can chorus.
Yes please Showbiz Kids ❤❤❤❤❤
"Lost Wages..." Love the rhyme with Las Vegas!
Another favorite from this album is Night By Night
Guys, it's time that you dig into Katy Lied in general, and Your Gold Teeth II specifically. It's the favorite of many Steely Dan-o-philes, and it has everything you guys like in Steely Dan tunes. Let's go. It's time.
Also also my favorite steely Dan song, from the moment I took it out of the sleeve when it was hot off the press, I think I wore that vinyl almost completely out but I still have it. I also have a cassette tape and the CD as well as the CD box collection. I really like all the music on the pretzel logic album, but this song takes the cake.
Pretzel Logic and Can’t Buy A Thrill are two brilliant albums that should be in everybody’s music collection. Steely Dan geniuses at work.
Did anyone ever lay down more tasty grooves than Steely Dan? A lot of weird and wonderful music came out of the 70s, but none as a sophisticated blend of rock and jazz as this band.
"Did anyone ever lay down more tasty grooves than Steely Dan?" I'm a frayed knot!
I played this song in an acoustic band (as their drummer) for almost two years before I found out it was a Steely Dan song !! LOLOLOLOL
Always wondered how DF decided to work ‘squonk’ into the lyrics, always makes me chuckle as I envision them in studio laughing as the wrote it…
I love anytime you guys cover Steely Dan! If you haven't yet please consider Kid Charlemagne or Dr. Wu.
They already did Kid Charlemagne.
@@catherinelw9365 Thanks! That's why I prefaced the suggestion. How about Dr Wu?
@@Ldastro I don't think they did Dr. Wu.
What can you say about Steely Dan, that we haven't all said before. So darn good.
I found your channel through your Steely Dan videos, love seeing you come back to them again!
More Steely Dan, Please! Is such great fun to watch ya'lls reacts to Amazing music
Haven`t heard this one in a while. I almost forgot about it. You can`t go wrong with Steely Dan. Thanks for this one guys.
Just a piece of smooth and funky music delivered with class and a magical lead vocal. Its Steely Dan.... 'nuff said
Thank you! This is one of my favorites. I read somewhere that this was about Donald Fagan comforting a friend of his who had just gotten out of a mental institution. I do know that their original drummer had to leave the band after the first two years because he was diagnosed with schizophrenia; however, I don't know if this is about him specifically. This song is like a hug.
I have always loved this track so much! The way they double Donald's voice on the chorus, it sounds so soothing and funky all at the same time. And the over all production is so clean, you can hear what everyone is doing on this track, yet, at times, I wish the drums weren't so far back in the mix.
Please, if you liked this track then check out the song "Everyone's Gone to The Movies"!
This album just keeps on giving.
Early on "The Dan" went country and it is yet another example of how they can incorporate and meld all styles of music into their approach.
You really really need to review the title track. Pretzel Logic. Great blues groove and guitar work
This nestles comfortably into a Steely Dan masterclass playlist, among at least 35 GREAT songs made in a 10-year period.
Possibly the most Beatlesque song the Dan ever recorded. Just perfect. ❤
There are plenty of hit songs to choose from with this band, but it's the little known, truly heart felt ones that make them a beautiful experience. This one always brings me to tears; "Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again." Eventually.
So glad you reacted to another Steely Dan song. Thank you!
Oh I’m so glad you hit this! Btw Skunk Baxter, the lead guitarist is performing a d has an album. Check him out. This was S-tier for me!!!! Alex, don’t get divorced. Slow down son you have time 😂
Yess , there are Tons of very fine Steely Dan Songs around. Go ahead, enjoy !
Awesome song!
In 1974, at age 13, I rode my bike to the store to buy my fist ever record, the 45rpm of Rikki, Don't Lose Than Number....
Any Major Dude Will Tell You was on the flip side!
Good times!
My favorite SD song. Reminds me of a road trip up to Vermont, slightly stoned 😏 enjoying the blue sky, NY farmland and a simply beautiful tune. ❤
"Don't take me alive" is a great Dan song. Raunchy guitar solo to start off. Great chorus. Larry Carlton at his finest.
Can't wait to see The Eagles and Steely Dan this fall. Such a great double bill and so appropriate. The "steely knives" lyric in Hotel California is a reference to Steely Dan. They have such a deep catalogue. You cannot go wrong.
Would love to hear Witchy Woman and Don’t Take Me Alive back to back.
Thank you ❤ You could play SD every day and I’m here for it. Hope the rain isn’t to bad for you guys. Have a great Wednesday A&A. Alex I could listen to your commentary all day. 😂 thanks for making me laugh.
This was the kind of reaction that endeared you guys to me long ago! Just an honest appraisal of a very tasty song - keep going boys!!!
I got this album when it first came out in '74. I would have been 12 or just turned 13. I had one teacher who would play albums before class, so I brought this one in. Not sure what the other kids thought but the teacher liked it a lot.
This came out in '74. From 1970 to about 1973 CSN&Y were at their peak. I think they had a big influence on this song.
You gotta do Show Biz Kids or Chain Lightning....two deep cuts that are total bangers
Alex your analogies just keep getting better and better!
One of my favorite songs off the album Pretzel Logic.
The genius of Steely Dan is the studio quality musicianship (think Wrecking Crew caliber musicians). That, and they employed the best back-up musicians for the individual song on the album. Look at the personnel who played on the album Aja.
YES great song! This is one of my fav SD songs. The other "King Of The World" you two will LOVE it
My handpicked Dan playlist has more than 40 songs. Go deeper, bros... Pick a card, any card: Caves of Altamira, Home at Last, Babylon Sisters, My Rival, Lunch with Gina, Gaslighting Abbie, and on and on... Whatever you do, just do more Dan more often. Peace.
Great song! Steely Dan is my oldest brother's favorite group and this is his all-time favorite from them! So happy to see you hit them again. 👍
Thanks, Andy! Thanks, Alex! 💎 #AndyAndAlex #SteelyDan #AnyMajorDudeWillTellYou
There's some killers on this album. Title track, this one, the unavoidable Rikki, the underrated With A Gun and the enormous Night By Night.
"Have you ever seen a squonks tears, well look at mine"! Gotta' be one of the best lines ever! I have loved them nearly ALL of my life, (this album is 48 years old!) They are truly one of the best! It's when these songs come up that I think maybe you guys should be paying us, only you can't even put a monetary value on it! Thanks for a great reaction to an all time fav!
The keyboard part in this song is amazingly good. So much attitude and style.
My fave SD songs: Major Dude, Kid Charlemagne, The Caves Of Altamira, Sign in Stranger, The Fez, Peg, Home At last, I Got the News, Josie. Their lyrics are so good.
Okay, you two have crossed the charisma line with me. Instead of usually ff ing to the cut, I’m hanging around for the opening random chatter and product promos. 😂👍 Oh and the SD cut was a pleasure. ❤
Thanks for playing this. I'm a Steely Dan fan, too, but I don't think I've ever heard this song either. Seeing that it came from the Pretzel Logic album makes sense as I don't own that one. I do have. "Rikki" on a 45, though. Not surprisingly, I like this one, too.
Dude. Take out your 45, and check the B-side.
I mean, you can’t even pigeon hole them into one genre. They are everything. They are their own thing and I unapologetically kneel at the altar of Steely Dan.
Enjoyed the reaction, guys! Yes, SD may raise your baby's IQ. I think there was a study. There's so much more Steely Dan to do -- try "My Rival" from Gaucho.
Or Almost Gothic from Two Against Nature.
You can't go wrong with any Steely Dan song. (That should be on a tee shirt, my brothuhs.) A Steely Dan t shirt from Show Biz Kids. Good work, A&A.
My wife and I are raising my grandsons and they had to endure my playlist on trips in the cars. There were many trips to visit their mother in Mexico. She was deported, long story and very sad. Anyway, my oldest kid was about 10 and has always been an old soul and also gifted. He said on the trip that he loved Steely Dan and that this song was special.
From one of my fave albums…Steely Dan or otherwise.
This is why they're major dudes!
I've been waiting patiently for you to get round to this one. My other 'slow' favourite is Only A Fool Would Say That. Then of course there's Don't Take Me Alive, Your Gold Teeth, Show Biz Kids - come on guys, you know you want to!
Love Show Biz Kids...
"They got the shapely bodies
They got the Steely Dan T-Shirt
And for the coup de grace
They're outrageous
Honey, let the girl you
While the poor people sleepin'
With the shade on the light
While the poor people sleepin'
All the stars come out at night..."
*ANDY AND ALEX* You have to catch them live! It WILL be the best concert ever!
Bought this album on 8 track when it first came out. STILL my favorite SD album.
This is my favorite Steely Dan song. Glad to see y’all react to it
Steely Dan is one of those bands where the album songs are often as good or better than their hit songs. There are a lot of bands like this which is why one shouldn’t give too much credence to Spotify lists.
I agree, except for my own Dan playlist on Spotify...😄 Yes, their deep cuts are some of their best imo. Here's one of my favorites that appeared on the Gold album..."Here at the Western World." Are You familiar with that one and if so, what are your thoughts?
Night by Night, Your Gold Teeth II and Chain Lightning are good examples
"Two Against Nature" was a beautiful surprise late album. It usually takes me awhile to warm up to new music by well loved artists but this just rang true. The other that I liked on first listen was the Robert Plant/Allison Kraus album. It's somehow different for me with current bands, i.e. I've loved every Tool album upon release. Thanks for letting me blab on about music 😊
@@larryclark5422 Boston Rag, Razor Boy
@@karenduell1027Yes I’m very familiar with that song and it’s one of my favorites.
Yinz have GOT to do “Don’t Take Me Alive.” Absolutely NASTY intro by the sublime Larry Carlton.
