This song is like a 'going out of business sale' for the band. This was going to be their last album and they knew it. Now Walter Becker is dead and there will be no more albums. It was sad when it first came out and it's even sadder now that he's gone. Great song. Great album. Great band. RIP Walter.

ALL their albums are great albums.
Got every one of them, even the solo stuff from Walter.
My favourite band of them all.
In the 70's,nobody was cooler than The Don,Donald Fagen.

The mood that song generates is warm and good-time.
Agree DF should be releasing another work and heard he is in the studio. You know how he is,secretive and eccentric.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if he's recording another masterpiece.

I remember when this was released, I cried. I didn’t want anyone to see me. When I heard “Everything Must Go” I knew that was the swan song of one of the bands who had meant so much to me. I had every album, including the solo work... gone through college with them, a divorce with them, started a new life with them. Thanks for choosing this song. I couldn’t hear it for years, but it seems I was ready now. Thanks Sir.

"Things I Miss the Most" off that album is a personal favorite--the humor and melancholy of nearing the end of life without all the toys and pleasures of the past. And recently, I chatted with a friend about this song after I commended him for his cheerful attitude about his choice to replace his luxury car--he had no interest in paying for a new engine--with a used economy car, much to the chagrin of his neighbors.

This was the last cut on their last album and -- though no one in the Dan confessed it until after Walter's passing -- everything about the song was intentional and done with purpose and feeling.
We fans kinda suspected it -- all the clues were there -- but we really didn't want to admit it to ourselves.
This was their Swan Song, and so they began with an over-the-top Big Hollywood Send-Off.
Big. Dramatic. Almost as difficult to listen to as the news of The Dan's demise.
It reminded me of Milton Berle's intro music from The Tonight Show, which Doc Severinsen and his band would make longer and gaudier with every successive appearance.
"Uncle Miltie's" death in March '02 at the age of 93 signalled the end of an American cultural era and may well have inspired the intro.
Keeping the listener on the brink for a moment, The Dan then lays down one of their trademark nasty deep grooves -- darkly urbane, full of affected resignation and despair.
The album came out in 2003, and it reflects the uneasy times after the Bush (s)election, the burst of the dot-com bubble, Enron, 9/11, and the US invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Many pioneering corporate startups -- especially e-commerce and telecom firms -- experienced a meteoric rise and fall. Some of their execs had golden parachutes, while their workers were left to pick up whatever pieces of their lives they could find in the wreckage.
Props to: Walt Weiskopf on the tenor sax, wailing in the intro and giving us that long last kiss goodbye; and to the rhythm section: Keith Carlock (drums) and Becker back to basics on bass.

Hi Jemel! Like some other people already said, this was the final song on their final album, but the band also had broken up from early 80s to early 90s then released the album “Two Against Nature” in 2000.
Please react to some songs from that album! All of them are on par with their jazzier material of the late 70s, but I’d start with “Gaslighting Abbie” or “Janie Runaway”. Thanks for keeping great music alive, man!

Last song on the last album Becker and Fagen recorded together. Tremendous tenor sax man (and arranger) Walt Weiskopf killing it on the solo(s). So many great players- - (imho) especially The Great God Carlock on drums. Out on tour they called this line-up the "Everyone Must Blow" Orchestra!

I'm sorry I didn't comment on this so long ago. Steely Dan and the album "Everything Must Go" is their epitome in my opinion, and I'm 67 and have been lsitening to SD since they first came out (Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and all the musical geniuses who have jorned them as "Steely Dan"). Unequalled musical genius!

You already have half the views that the song has. This song is stupendously and stunningly amazing. I started listening to Steely Dan at 9 years old and I've grown old with them. This was the ONLY jazzish band that use to get serious play on rock stations in their heyday and beyond. They started out back in the day getting pop radio play but that faded out but the rock stations never let them go. THANK YOU ALL THE STATIONS THAT USE TO PLAY THEM . I WOULD HAVE MISSED AN ALL AMERICAN JAZZ, ROCK, POP MIRACLE. (Cuz I never would've chased this band down on my own). This was a come back album after 20 years without an album. Then they turned around about 3 years after and released another one, and now only Donald Fagen occasionally releases an album (the other main guy died). Donald Fagen's albums aren't of the same caliber but there are always at least 2 0r 3 good songs on his solos. He's the lead singer in the former band.

They give the music room to breath ~~~ Elbowroom not only for the individual musicians to be heard and to interweave, but also for the listener to be a participant. Speaking as a listener who was there to hear each 1970's album when it was new, I'll just say "thanks for turning me on to a SD tune that was new to me," and, "it's definitely true to the tradition"
P.S. please do "Hot Fun In the Summertime" ! Today's the last day of August, and like the song says, "First of the fall and then she goes back~~~"

Steely Dan jazz rock soul. Van Morrison jazz rock. Celtic soul. So great to hear you supporting two great artists. For SD it was more about the musicianship for VM it was more about the voice.

This is the last song on the last album Everything Must Go released in 2003. Check out their 2000 album Two Against Nature and the songs “Gaslighting Abbie”, “Jack of Speed”, “Negative Girl”, and “West of Hollywood”. That album won 4 Grammy awards.

Steely Dan has a way of 'disguising' The Blues within harmonic substitutions and chordal alterations that is pretty unique in Pop/Rock music, but often found in Jazz music. - you can still hear a Blues song form and hear the Blues feeling in the melody and in those vocal cadences.

"Telstar" by The Tornados is a nearly lost classic today. An instrumental, but one that was instrumental in shaping music to come and an inspiration to the Space Generation. Look for a remastered recording, a lot of scratchy 45s were posted to RUclips.
