I will echo some of your fans and suggest "The Caves Of Altamira", "King Of The World", The Royal Scam", 'Third World Man", "Here At The Western World". Every SD tune from the 70's is so good.
"Chasing the dragon" (traditional Chinese: 追龍; simplified Chinese: 追龙; pinyin: zhuī lóng; Jyutping: zeoi1 lung4) is a slang phrase of Cantonese origin from Hong Kong referring to inhaling the vapor from a heated solution of morphine, heroin, oxycodone, opium, or ya ba (a pill containing caffeine and methamphetamine)
Your expression (freeze frame 2:27) is the perfect reaction to this song and it is the creative genius of Steely Dan to wake up the listener, stop the dancing and say "what?". This song both grooves and breaks my heart. Your expression is priceless and right on target.
Hey Jamal, loving your work brother! Looks like you’re finally ‘getting’ Steely Dan. They are THE ultimate groove masters, with fantastic quality music, musicians and instrumentation, playing, over deep and very often dark lyrics! Keep going my man. There’s lots more you haven’t heard yet. Please listen to Jack of Speed, The Caves of Altamira and Green Earings at some point.
They recorded hours of his playing only for a few seconds on this song. Don't quote me on this but I'm almost certain you can hear small licks of his on other songs from the album but I can't remember which ones. A great album to listen to over and over again, only to keep finding new stuff each time.
Well, originally "chasing the dragon" was smoking opium (Sherlock Holmes was known to "chase the dragon" according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and that was written before there even WAS heroin). I do think with the line "water may change to cherry wine" we're talking about shooting heroin, though.
Arthur Reilly I read Knopler said Steely Dan drove him nuts. He said it was like swimming with cement shoes . SD paid him 1 million dollars to play all sorts of guitar, but in the end they used only like 10 seconds of his work. I don’t know which 10 seconds it is. Also I believe David Sandborne played sax on the song.
As many have said, that line "when I chase the dragon" refers to most likely heroin in this song. For some reason, this one always makes me think of Cab Calloway's sequel to "Minnie the Moocher" called "Kicking the Gong Around" about her being an opium addict. Thanks, another great reaction and step in the journey!
I think anything from TFF will work. I saw them on their first US tour in the 80's and again in about 2016 at the Greek Theater. They sounded even better in 2016.
Plenty musicians hate or love Steely Dan, but no pro can deny the absolute mastery of producing and recording music they represent. Constantly bringing the best of the best musicians - famous or obscure - until they get JUST the right sound. RIP Walter.
Probably the happiest song ever written about heroin (which I think Becker was addicted to at one time). Water changing to cherry wine=blood going into a syringe. Silver turning to gold=a spoon changing color when heated with a lighter.
Jamel! Steely Dan! Way to go, man! The "Can't Buy a Thrill" album has a cut called Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me. Steel guitars from a decidedly urban jazz-based band. And this song is almost impossible to sing unless your vocal range is HUGE!
"Can't Buy a Thrill" was so dimensional as a debut album. You could see them dabbling with different sounds/styles. With "Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me" you get SD doing something that sounds like the Eagles and with "Reeling in the Years" something that hints at the Doobie Brothers. What's great about SD is how they use different sounds and styles like different notes. Each song stands alone but the body of work, in total, is a composition as well.
Fans say this music doesn't get old, but I remember when it was new--a time when my friends had a lot of parties, before most of them had kids. Coke wasn't at most of these parties, but it was definitely on the rise around us--even though 1980 was still before crack. That doesn't mean the song is only about using drugs, which can be a "substance" or a metaphor for some other kind of buzz--even just the buzz associated with a piece of music. This song was written by people who were almost ten years older than we were, so their "time out of mind" could have been a flashback, or what happens when something in the past is recaptured by an additive. If the real thing can't be re-experienced just as it felt the first time, it's a fantasy--neither real nor rational. That's what makes it "time out of mind."
Hats off to Walter and Donald for the patience they showed in the week it took Mark Knopfler to get the lick down because he couldn't read music. Mark was terrified in there with actual readers. It was very rare that any non reader got near a Steely Dan studio.
The Gaucho album that this track is from won the Grammy for its engineering. This track features Mark Knopfler on guitar and Michael McDonald on backing vocals (again :) This was the last album that they would release for 20 years.

If you don't see them nodding and winking at you in your mind's eye as you listen to a Steely Dan tune, you need to listen again. Thankfully, they're all worth hearing again...and again...and again....

typical SD lyrics sounds like just a wonderful romantic night on the town "I'm holding a mystical stone, it's direct from Lhasa" Black Tar heroin usually comes in a little ball or clump that looks like a pebble, and Lhasa as mentioned previously is in Tibet, which is a region known for the production of the drug. "Tonight when I chase the dragon" The heroin user never gets as big a euphoric trip as the first time. Therefore always taking more or purer dope to try to get that same high "The water may change to cherry wine" In order to smoke black tar heroin, you have to dilute it with water and create a paste which can be spread on the aluminum foil, almost the consistency of toothpaste which has a ruby color, similar to cherry wine. "The silver may change to gold" Once the substance is spread on the foil and heat is applied, the foil turns amber/golden from the burning of the drug, which creates the smoke, which is 'chased' by the user holding a hollow tube (like a straw) and inhaled. "Time out of mind" Many heroin users describe the feeling of using heroin as a complete escape from reality, almost like an out of body experience, hence the feeling of spending time out of one's own mind. "Son you better get ready for love" Heroin users almost exclusively express a love for this drug over any other. Most users develop what is called a "love affair with the needle" or whatever manner they choose to ingest it. They are just as tied to the drug as they are the means by which they use it. "Keep your eyes on the sky, put a dollar in the kitty, don't the moon look pretty" One of the effect of the 'high' of heroin is that the users eyes will roll back in their head (or upwards) as the drug lulls the body into almost a coma like state. Put a dollar in the kitty speaks to the inexpensive nature of the drug. Don't the moon look pretty is pretty much all the user can look at, since their eyes are rolling upwards.

"I'm holding a mystical stone, it's direct from Lhasa"
Black Tar heroin usually comes in a little ball or clump that looks like a pebble, and Lhasa as mentioned previously is in Tibet, which is a region known for the production of the drug.
"Tonight when I chase the dragon"
The heroin user never gets as big a euphoric trip as the first time.
Therefore always taking more or purer dope to try to get that same high
"The water may change to cherry wine"
In order to smoke black tar heroin, you have to dilute it with water and create a paste which can be spread on the aluminum foil, almost the consistency of toothpaste which has a ruby color, similar to cherry wine.
"The silver may change to gold"
Once the substance is spread on the foil and heat is applied, the foil turns amber/golden from the burning of the drug, which creates the smoke, which is 'chased' by the user holding a hollow tube (like a straw) and inhaled.
"Time out of mind"
Many heroin users describe the feeling of using heroin as a complete escape from reality, almost like an out of body experience, hence the feeling of spending time out of one's own mind.
"Son you better get ready for love"
Heroin users almost exclusively express a love for this drug over any other. Most users develop what is called a "love affair with the needle" or whatever manner they choose to ingest it. They are just as tied to the drug as they are the means by which they use it.
"Keep your eyes on the sky, put a dollar in the kitty, don't the moon look pretty"
One of the effect of the 'high' of heroin is that the users eyes will roll back in their head (or upwards) as the drug lulls the body into almost a coma like state. Put a dollar in the kitty speaks to the inexpensive nature of the drug. Don't the moon look pretty is pretty much all the user can look at, since their eyes are rolling upwards.

Great reaction as usual. There's a song by them i'd like to see a reaction to. It's from the animated movie Heavy Metal and the song is True Companion. Has a lot of melodic guitar parts in it. Enjoy!😉😌
Brother Jamel, The only essential Steely Dan song you have MISSED - “ REELIN’ IN THE YEARS” (1972) Another great S D song!
The look on Jamel's face as the chorus started is priceless!

Dragon is a reference to inhaling the smoke of Opium as it burns on a piece of foil.
Musical geniuses; no one ever covers Steely Dan tunes, because they CANT
Actually hundreds of jazz cats cover their tunes, the total opposite of this comment.
Peter Quinones I was trying to compliment their musicianship, the total opposite of this comment. I guess I don’t listen to enough jazz cats.
@@Laura-rm6us For a real treat check out Allan Harris treatment of Any Major Dude
