"Musically, “Godwhacker” is as good a Steely Dan gets. Jon Herington takes the main rhythm guitar hook while Hugh McCracken’s guitar skates around the edges of the melody. Walter Becker continues providing tasty and appropriately complex bass parts while drummer Keith Carlock does a fantastically complex job of working his high-hat with one hand and hitting his snare in lock step with Becker’s bass with the other...Becker's guitar solo has a bite, following a rare and almost Stevie Wonder-like synth solo by Donald Fagen...Preston Frazier
“When the cold wind comes, I go where the dahlias bloom. I keep drifting back …” to your Reaction Channel … and Steely Dan 😝 !!
Great reaction with insight and heart. And while these selections may not be the ear candy that other Steely Dan classics are, they have that SD Spark and if given airtime, they GROW on you and add to the soundtrack of your life. Hugs and thanks ☺️ ❤️🔥
Thanks for the request of my favorite music. I hope you are well. 😎
As Nick and Lex always say, "There is not a bad Steely Dan song." Thanks for giving them some more for their playlist! Echoing Scott, I hope you are well!❤️❤️ Debbie
I am late for this one but yes, Thank You! I absolutely Love this song, long story but has special place in my heart
@@alansmith7626 Thanks, Alan. Never too late for Donald … and Steely Dan. Special place in my heart too. ❤️🔥😽❤️🔥
The horn charts on Kamakiriad are some of the best in the SD/Fagen discography.
Wowza the Epitaph song Everything must go really sums it up in one line when Donald utters “ if we got a few good licks in “ man yes Mr Fagan you and Walter did you enriched our lives with your licks 😢. Your music will live for ever and ever day is a Dan Day. Sad sad sad Well it’s time to start the back catalogue again thank you Nik & Lex keeping there music alive ❤
A Florida Room is a sunroom built as an extension to a house, usually overlooking a lakefront or other stretch of greenery. Called that because it was a popular feature of upscale houses built in Florida primarily in mid-20th century.
I visited Tampa on a business trip about 20 years ago and remember noticing that almost every house had like a screened in porch type situation, usually with a pool and then after this most recent hurricane, in almost every single video I watched, they had one of those "Florida rooms".
I learned about actual Florida Rooms in the late 90s when I was looking to buy a house in DC. The realtors fudged the definition a tad - more like a screened-in sleeping porch. And almost always on remodeled old homes. I already knew about the Kamakiriad, and loved the link.
Florida Rooms became a trend of the postwar era and the '50s. Maybe into the early '60s. I had relatives in northwestern PA, and they were WWI generation. They lived in former coal company houses built around 1905 in small ex mining towns. My grandfather and a great uncle both built porches on the back of their houses and installed screened jalousie windows to make those essentially a three season room. And both of those households referred to that room as "the Florida room." Those rooms overlooked nothing but the back yard.
FYI Walter produced Kamakiriad and is listed as playing all the bass guitar as well as lead guitar on the album. Snowbound was a Becker Fagen track they had been working on for a while but had put on the shelf. Someone already mentioned that Libby Titus (singer, songwriter and wife of Fagen) contributed lyrics on Florida Room.
Yep. It is essentially another SD album, and it's loaded with great tracks. What a treasure.

If you didn't see this show, please do. I"m sure you"ll enjoy it much. 😊Greets!
On the dunes is another gem on this album the out-fade drumming is outstanding great choices SD is amazing !
Tomorrow's Girls as well - the bridge is the best ever.. My favorite on Kamakiriad is Snowbound. The bass line is NEXT level.
Love On The Dunes, it is soo original and has a fantastic outro that is one of the Dans hallmarks. The lyrics reflect the oft-explored downbeat outsider schtick. x
I remember when I bought the album " Kamakiriad " and listening to "Florida Room". I lived in Pennsylvania at the time and didn't know what a "Florida room" was. I now live in Florida and have my own Florida Room.
Loving my Florida Room as well :)
Nick - It's like, the same for every reaction video you do when you do a Steely Dan and Donald Fagen song. It's outstanding!!! I was there for Peg and then for Aja - and you had it right, way back then - there isn't a bad Steely Dan song.
It has been so wonderful sharing this trip with you. Imagine being there when each new album came out!! Bro - it was awesome. Thanks for being there. Florida Room - from kamakiriad - what a great jazz song! Godwhacker - Donald's questioning reality song - Everything Must Go - Donald and Walter's attempt to say goodbye, and thanks for all the fish.
I miss Lex - please pass on my regards.
Ken
You are absolutely right Nick, I’ve been listening to Dan for over 40 years and I always hear something new in their songs. The music is forever, never gets old. I love to see others discovering how great The Dan is.
Two of the best Dan songs ever included in this group. Godwhaker and Everything must go are masterpieces.
Godwhacker is off the scale good
Donald Fagen has made 2 more solo albums after Everything Must Go: Sunken Condos, Morph the Cat ; Walter - Circus Money.
I've been a devoted fan of Steely Dan since they first came out when I was in High School. Everything Must Go is definitely my most favorite of all of Donald and Walter's work. Such unequaled genius music.
Teahouse on the Tracks, the final track,is as close to perfection as I’ve ever heard.
Thanks Nick (and Lex) SO appreciate your love for Steely Dan and your great reactions this one no exception!
Agree, please keep them coming Nick and Lex Sat the entire time smiliing during this reaction.
Yay! Steely Dan marathon! My Friday is perfect!
We are watching this amazing cover band called Citizen Dan tonight. Maybe we might go LIVE if filming is allowed!!
One thing that always amazes me about Dan's music is the horn arrangements are just so incredible but often overlooked.... great analyses Nick thanks
Kamakiriad shows out with several of Donald's finest .
This one included.
"Snowbound" & "on The Dunes" certainly parallel tracks .
I'm so glad you got to Florida Room, it's my favorite on my favorite Fagen solo album. Such a groove, so smooth! So glad you got to hear it!
The boy,s/ The Donald/ The Dan! My boy,s since 74! I requested Florida Room awhile back/ Thx Michelle! The Brooklyn Charmer,s are the best Steely Dan cover band out there, they have a lot of studio video,s and live performances too/ check them out!
Nailed it! Steely Dan’s music just puts me in a good mood, and in such a groove. …”Give that man some whacking space”. 🤘🏼😎
Florida Rooms are south-facing sunrooms up north (Northeast US or Midwest). I live in Texas, where it's boiling hot most of the year. The LAST thing we need is a Florida Room!!
Everything must go is a great album, along with Two Agains Nature. It’s like every song on both has its own unique groove, something that you can vibe with. Steely Dan doesn’t miss!!
Two against nature was album of the year.
This is so great getting into the newer stuff. Donald is maybe the greatest songwriter of our generation. With respect to the musicians, they started to use guys who toured with them for many of the tracks.
Living on the Fault Line is very underrated. It's the 2nd album with Michael McDonald.
I have been a Dan fan for most of my life, and I think that "Everything Must Go" is one of my favorites. It is the perfect send off for Walter and Donald. Some of their best work. that harkens back to Aja. I am so glad you reacted to this one!
Fagen wrote "Godwhacker" after his mother died a sad, lingering death from Alzheimer's. As someone who also watched his mother suffer for a prolonged period of time, I can feel his anguish and rage.
I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
Wow. Thank you for that information. I will listen to the song differently now.
Walter's tone and phrasing on Godwhacker is just perfect. One of his best solos, following another great one by Donald. Great to hear them sharing solo duties, which didn't happen often
I saw a great Steely Dan tribute band called Nearly Dan.
Playing catch-up here again- lovely marathon, Michele and Nick! I love the whole Kamakiriad album, but especially "On the Dunes", "Snowbound" "Florida Room" and "Counter Moon."
On EMG, in addition to those two I like "Pixeleen", "Lunch With Gina", and "Green Book."
You know, one of the best things, in addition to the pleasure of either discovering music I've never heard or watching as you discover music I love, is listening to it all on headphones, often for the first time!
Anyhoo, the more Walter and Donald on the channel the better!! Thanks!
🎵❤️🎵 Debbie
Fantastic DF and SD songs. But aren't they all? On the album Everything Must Go Pixeleen and Lunch with Gina are also outstanding. I also dig an appearance by Walter on vocals in Slang of Ages. On Kamakiriad TransIsland Skyway and Countermoon are great, but Snowbound, Tomorrow's Girls, and On the Dunes are EPIC!!! Walter produced Kamakiriad.
Pixeleen. Swoon
I boughht the album "Kamaliriad" back in 1993 while still living in Pennsylvania. I had no intentions of moving to Florida. I did just that in 1998 and now I have my own Florida Room. Great reaction. Take care.
Snowbound, Walt, wrote with Don. The reunion song. Earl Klugh, Heart String. Al Jarreau, This Time. recommended listening.
To your comment at 26:00 guitarist Hugh McCracken played on Katy Lied and Gaucho. He also played on Everything Must Go and some of Donald’s solo albums.
I don't even file Donald Fagen under F in my collection. He goes right in the S with Steely Dan. I just think of his albums as new Steely Dan releases. The sound is just too similar for there to be any real distinction between them.
Tremendous body of work from Donald - the best ever!
I enjoyed watching yuor face squirming through that intro of 'Everything Must Go'... My God, what a fabulous last song. Like it says in the lyrics... 'they gave it their best shot'... gorgeous melancholy, SPOT ON LYRICS AND INTRO EFFORT for a SWAN SONG. This is my second favorite SD album, Gaucho being #1. Keep posting great stuff!
Hugh McCracken is playing the rhythm (Larry Carlton like). Keith Carlock (drums) is a BEAST.
Saw Larry Carlton as a warm up act decades ago. He was amazing. Who did he warm up for? Can’t recall - might have been Kenny Loggins. TOLD you it was decades😏
Keith Carlock is astonishing
Just saw Dirty Logic, an Asheville NC based tribute band. Awesome!
What's cool is that Becker and Fagen continued to collaborate after 2003's "Everything Must Go": IIRC, Becker produced Fagen's next two solo albums--"Morph The Cat" and "Sunken Condos"--while Fagen produced Becker's second (last) solo album, "Circus Money."
You know when Walter is playing those tasty guitar parts. He’s a feel player with a distinctive voice. It’s not just the single note style, his tone is unique as well. He was a true master musician and poetic songwriter. I used to see him around when I lived on Maui back in '80 or so. I’d be working in the back of the Kehei Fish House, a popular restaurant, listening to Gaucho on cassette and Walter would come in for dinner. That’s an event for the rabid fan that I am. They wouldn’t even let me look through the little portal window of the swinging kitchen door. He was a guest one night on the local radio station along with an Aussie dude. The DJ asked the listeners to guess the weight of the Aussie. The winner would get the album, Steely Dan Gold, a best of. I guessed right and asked Walter to sign it for me. He wrote, "To Thomas Berton, Hope you got off." and accompanying his signature, he wrote, Director of the Pacific Whale Foundation… Later, back in New York in South Hampton, I attended Donald's first Rock & Roll Review. Eddie Simon, Paul's brother produced and Phoebe Snow opened. Well, you just know that I brought that album with me, with the hope that I might have Donald sign it as well. Found him in a room behind the stage afterwards being consoled by his wife, Libby. "No, it was good." Sheepishly approached him with my Maui story and album in tow. He was as you would imagine. Shook the hand of my hero who signed my Steely Dan Gold. I was so jazzed to have both of their autographs on that album.
Nick, just a quick note. At the time they recorded this, Donald and Walter did not know this was their last album. The song "Everything Must Go" is a satire of American corporate ethics and morals, written after the Enron scandal.
You may want to check out Walter’s solo albums on your own. Both are great and would give you a more complete perspective on what makes up the Steely sound.
F1rst!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Just learned Chevy Chase used to play with Fagen and Becker b4 SD.
The band was called The Leather Canary.
@@scottanderson8420 yeah, I looked them up. Much prefer SD TO CL, but hey.
Very nice Michele! Highly enjoyed this my dear friend! Always love me a Michele marathon ✌️❤️☺️
Playing catch-up here again- lovely marathon, Michele and Nick! I love the whole Kamakiriad album, but especially "On the Dunes", "Snowbound" "Florida Room" and "Counter Moon."
On EMG, in addition to those two I like "Pixeleen".
background vocals Carolyn Leonhart is awesome. Cindy Mizelle and Catherine Russell. Walter's health ended the duo's work. Donald wrote and produced album Sunkin Condos with Michael Leonhart. I hope that Donald does a few more albums - he is the best and can still do it.
Good shout out for Carolyn Leonhart. She has been immense in the last 10/15 years of the Dan.
Thanks 🙏 for this video 🙂! We have a great 😃👍 Tribute Band here called 'The Fine Columbians!!' Their stuff is spot on! Like you guys I sung 😅 along to every song 🤠! Nice intimate Venue and we had front row seats!
Nothing but great music from the Dan!
This came up blocked for me for a few days. So glad it finally got free! Thank you Michelle!
Good on you Mate 🤠! 'I'm not your DeeJay!' This is what I love about Reaction videos! Your heartfelt vibes for the music 🤣 🎶!
Great choices Michelle! Literally can't go wrong with Don/Dan!
Watching some of your vids tonight I never saw b4. Florida Room, what a song, 20 years after Can't Buy A Thrill. Donald performs Florida Room when he gets inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame. His voice is off but heh, it's always great to see him perform. The video is on YT. Great stuff Nick.
Great reactions, Nick, as always!
You are completely right on stopping in the mid of the video to say your impressions, you said well, you are not a Dj!
Your impressions are the same as mine, for instance you said that Donald uses his voice in the third song in an impressive way, and so it is! Litterally in a way that very seldom has done elsewhere, so high and rich of phrasing, I think somewhat like in Haitian divorce (but he always sings in an amazing way!) . So it shows how a good singer he is!
Godwhacker and the title track are true masterpieces of this album, and so are "Lunch with Gina" and "Pixeleen". From Kamakiriad I suggest "On the dunes" and "Teahouse on the tracks".
Thanks, Nick, for your wonderful reactions!
Perfect Songs Thanks
Jon Herington is an amazing guitar player.
LOVE YOU GUYS I LOVE YOUR REACTS NXS
YES!!!!! So excited
Recently learned of a DF song, Confide in Me. On RUclips and he only put it out on a bonus CD w boxed Nightfly Trilogy. So it’s 2007 or earlier. Terrific blues number
Wow, those lyrics about going out of business and everything must go!... So poignant for their last album man!.. at the end you said "You're just this couple!" You both represent everyone who discovers new music that hits your soul and it will be with you both forever.
Nick (and Lex) you guys need to check out Janie Runaway.. it's one of my favorite Dan tunes from Two Against Nature.. I really think that you guys will love it! Love the channel!
Just came up in my feed again today. Interesting timing as we are bringing back EMG and Lunch with Gina for our next gig in April (Ophelia's if you're interested!)
EMG GREAT SONG OVER AND OVER PLAYLIST
Checkout album Nightfly - Maxine is amazing piano work from Donald.
Has Nick ever reviewed Tomorrow's Girls? Best Donald Solo in my opinion.
Keith Carlock drums on every tune on EMG
Denny Dias is the common link between early Doobies and early Dan. A brilliant guitarist.
Sorry! I meant Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, not Dias. That was an unforgivable error. I’ll shut up now.
@@JKonstage Both are great guitarists.
@@JKonstage All is forgiven. It's the intent that counts.
There's another link between them. Saxophone player Cornelius Bumpus has played for the Doobie Brothers in the early 80s and later played in the Steely Dan live band from 1993 till his early death in 2004.
Nick, if you’re enjoying the sax, West of Hollywood will slay you
Yeah thanks Michelle but no Alexia’s Smille 🥲 tragic. Well these are some great songs I was a few minutes into the reaction and it got blocked glad your back. Florida Room is a song that started every trip to Florida in the mid 2000s to 2014. My wife did Winter art fairs in Florida ad a whole mix CD looking for that house in the Spanish style and our time in the Sun. Walters Solo on Godwhacker is awesome. Yes Walter Becker need a reaction to go with the T Shirt. Everything Must Go is Everything you need. Need Alexia with Steely Dan. Hope your well Michelle ❤️
Some excellent songs on Everything Must Go. But I can’t shake a feeling of sadness when I listen to it. It is a goodbye to a phase of their/Donald’s career.
Is that Jean Luc Ponty I spy on your shelf? Cool album.
Donald wrote Florida Room with his wife Libby
I like the Elmer Fudd impersonation in the bridge/chorus.
Major Dude, but without the Major Dudette? Ay Carumba!
Sacrilege! Just joking 🤣
Thanks @michellmichelle. Hope you're doing well.
Early Doobies is Amazing...I grew up with their music, Before MMc
Bass line compliments of Mr. Becker.
On Florida Room
You should take a listen to Toto's "Let it Go". It's got a very difficult "guitar duplicating the piano riffs" passage. Pretty great!
This one the lyrics co-written by DF’s wife Libby Titus.
If you avoid The Last Mall, Blues Beach and that song Walter sings - Everything must Go is a good record
BRUCE THE WAY IT IS,
Hi Nick, Have you had a listen to Walter Beckers Surf and Die .Another brilliant song that I am sure you will be impressed with.
The last Steely Dan and Fagen solo albums are the "it wasn't necessary guys", even though they're not bad by any measure, it's just i don't hear what they add to the previous masterpieces in the catalogue. They're sort of predictable, sort of repeating a formula, which until Two Against Nature was unthinkable for me to say about them.

10 great subs who stick with you are better than a 100 transient subs who turn up for a single artist.
BRUCE HORCNSBY
They were "OK" albums. But nothing close to Can't Buy A Thrill, The Royal Scam, Katy Lied, Pretzel Logic, and for goodness sake, Aja. Not. Even. Close.
Dan who??
En español por favor
Vamos a hacer mas es espanol hermano. Este fin va a salir canciones en espanol
Everything Must Go is a mocking tribute to the Enron scandal
Some great songs in it,but not one of his best albums.
Hate to disappoint anyone, but Two Against Nature, and Everything Must Go, are my least favorite Steely Dan albums. There’s a couple of good songs on each one, but neither one is their greatest effort IMHO. Walter Becker’s guitar tone had been tweaked to the degree that it was almost annoying on some songs. And there aren’t any real melodic tunes on either. Just my opinion for what it’s worth. 🤷♂️
Nick! What a great trio of reactions, thank you. Thanks Michele Michel for requesting this. Steely Dan are SO GOOD.
I have some wonderful news regarding Allan for you. During your reaction to UK's Nevermore, you mentioned that you'd never heard Allan play acoustic. Please hunt down an album called The Things You See by Allan Holdsworth and Gordon Beck. It's basically Allan shredding the heck out of an acoustic with Gordon on an acoustic piano. "Diminished Responsability" (deliberate misspelling) from that album is god level.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Things_You_See
