Walter produced the entire Kamakiriad album, and played lead and bass guitar parts throughout. This was their first full-album collaboration since Gaucho. So while it’s officially a Donald solo album, as the songs were all written by him, it’s also a like Steely Dan album in disguise. ❤

Thank you Nick and Lex! Yes, I do try to request songs that I know you will like, as well as the community. You were right about this being a sci-fi song. It’s about a race of beautiful alien women who land on earth to take over the planet. The long outro is a list of names of women who’ve been replaced by aliens, which is a very funny way to end the song. And this is the album where Walter makes up with Donald and they’re together again. Eventually leading to two more Steely Dan albums, one of which (Two Against Nature) won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Although I personally prefer their last one, Everything Must Go.

After The Nightfly, Donald had some writer's block and went into a deep depression. He tried to make a solo album, then a Steely Dan album. It wasn't happening. He write a few songs for other artists (Diana Ross, Greg Phillanganes), then some music for the movie Bright Lights, Big City (ex. Century's End). The Fagen got together a NY Rock n Soul Review with Michael McDonald, The Rascals, Phoebe Snow - bumped into Walter, married the tour producer Libby Titus and got his Mojo back. Walter and Donald then recorded their first solo albums and began touring as Steely Dan again.

Official the Kamakrirad album is a Donald solo project but if the scratch the surface we'll find a Walter Becker as a session guitarist and producer. Yes it's the Walter Becker as the second half of Steely Dan. So in reality it's a SD album according to me cause Walter produced it and is also credtided as guitarist plus it sounds like mid '90s SD!

I recently discovered your channel. I enjoy watching your reactions to music I've been enjoying for many years now. Anything Steely Dan is pure gold! Forgive me, I haven't read many comments, but are you aware of Donald Fagen's last solo album "Sunken Condos" from 2012? Highly recommended. Track #4 "weather in my head" features solo guitar that reminds me of their Royal Scam album.
Also, on a different note, are you aware of the group called "Incognito"? It's a UK based, the mastermind is Jean-Paul Maunick and his rotating crew of session musicians. If you love Steely Dan, I'm sure you 'll absolutely love Incognito. They feature slick production, amazing musicianship, jazz/funk/fusion/dance, fabulous grooves, basslines, horn section, female backing vocals, etc. Check them out if you have not done so. You won't regret it. They have albums dating back to the late 80's, early 90's and present day. I highly recommend their album "In Search of Better Days" from 2016.

Thanks JK we will eventually hear it all. They can still do the videos of this one and Snowbound. Great song that incorporates their fascination with science fiction. I say they because Walter Becker produced and plays guitar on every track and plays bass to. The only thing that doesn’t make this a Steely Dan record is that Walter Becker didn’t really write any of the songs except for snowbound, which was a song that they had abandoned earlier. So all these compositions are Donald Fagen. I did get the smooth touch of Walter producing and adding his guitar . The video is very hilarious with Rick Moranis in it. I’m gonna sit back and listen to the reaction in the cool of the evening in the last night of the triple sun. Then I want to comment on how great my two favorite reactors did.

Thanks for the morning walk with Toby. (Woof!) I have never heard this as "life got in the way" when this came out. Here's a gift from Toby's walk playlist he would think you will enjoy...
    Kim Mitchell (also Max Webster)
    All You Are (solo)
In Context To The Moon (prog)
    n The Road (acústica)
    {Portuguese spell check)
Have a good walk with Max

This is a Steely Dan album in everything but name. Walter produced it and played on it, for heaven’s sake. What more does it need to be the real thing?
Edit: Did the heavy collaboration on this album lead to the resumption of touring that also began in ‘93?

Great pick! Baffles me how you guys could listen to this and not discuss the lyrical content very much!

This song had so many good things going on. To react to all that musical Input ( chords, bass lines, drums, horns, guitar licks, solos, time signatures etc ) it's impossible to just
focus on the lyrics. We had such a good time just listening to the man sing plus the backing vocals. It's not enough time to discuss the lyrics in 10 minutes. We do that on repeated plays afterwards. We just heard the song 3 times in a row and now we are singing along like we always do when we listen to steely dan👍

@@NicknLex :-) Fair enough - but I would have expected at least some reference to the lyrics within that 10 minutes - they are pretty unusual. But I guess we each come to art from different directions and music is no exception.

Steeleye Span, I mean Steely Dan, is more betterer than Low-T Dan, leastwise according to Gideon's Bhagavad-Gita. That proven, let me go on the suggest some further Pretzel Logics and some Charlie Freak, who had but one thing to call his own. Happy Fifth!
