I remember this song. This is from the 80s. This song was pretty much talking about what we have available today(solar panels, trips to space, computer programming). Listen to those lyrics. Also I.G.Y. stood for International Geophysical Year (when scientists from all over the world would collaborate), it was a science project, an event that ran from summer 1957 to the end 1958 & included 67 countries.
Also Donald Fagen was a lead singer for rock band Steely Dan. This song was known as What A Beautiful World because no one really knew what I.G.Y stood for.
Absolute FIRE!!!! A classic. Donald Fagen is the lead singer of the band Steely Dan. And if you’re a fan of production, Steely Dan is a playground.
i grew up on Steely Dan. My Dad loved them!!!
I.G.Y.(International Geophysical Year). This song was from Donald Fagen's 1982 album "The Nightfly" and it was based on his growing up in the 1950s. The Year 1955 was classified as the International Geophysical Year which lasted from July 1,1957 to December 31, 1958.This period of time refers to an international science project that was going on at the time.
I remember hearing this song on soft rock as well as urban radio stations. Great song! Peaceful! 🎶💥💫
Same. But it was a local Quiet Storm station that introduced me to “IGY”, though it was played elsewhere. Also, MTV aired the video, too.
So many urban stations played Steely Dan
4:45 “Listen to that. Super cool variety of sounds.”
Jack, Steely Dan were shown the same love from R&B-formatted radio as other ‘yacht rockers’ eg Hall & Oates, Boz Scaggs, Gino Vannelli, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Ambrosia... ✌🏽
IGY means "International Geophysical Year", 1957, when many countries (eastern and western bloc) agreed for the principle of collaboration between scientists to envision a better future. That didn't last, unfortunately. This song is nostalgic about a big missed opportunity, while another song of the same album, "New frontier", talks about the follow-up moon conquest promises era, while the protagonists of the video are partiying in a nuclear fallout shelter.
In 1993 I went around the world on the Madonna Girlie Show tour, working in the wardrobe department. This track, played on a loop, was what our sound guys used to test the stadium speakers on every date before the band came in to do sound check. I heard this song, I don't know how many times, while standing in dressing rooms, steaming out costumes on 5 different continents! Thanks for the flashback.
What a great experience. That was the only tour of Madonna’s I attended and it was spectacular.
I remember being in high school hearing this song I love it
I had this on 45 lol. This song also had a cool video. He put it out in the early 80s, but I think this song was about how Americans in the 1950s expected the future (say now in 2023) to be.
I love how the song sounds upbeat and happy, but it's actually sarcastically making fun of the absurd optimism of that period.
You gotta take a listen to Steely Dan. Donald Fagen was half of that duo that dominated college, rock even jazz stations a lot of urban stations play Steely Dan too! They were beyond the genre. they created and cross boundaries very sophisticated
Yup. My local Quiet Storm station played both Donald Fagen as well as Steely Dan.
Steely Dan is the musician's musican group. Their legendary studio prodigeous sessions are the stuff of lore in how they plowed through scores and scores of session musicians in the persuit of the perfect sounds.
This is Donal Fagen, half of the quentessential band Steely Dan and the only surviving member of that dynamic duo. Their music is so sophisiticated and intricate that audiophiles use their albums to tes the true perfomance of any high end sound devices. They are a fixture in world music because of their meticulous dedication to perfecting a song before it ever sees the light of day. I could go on an on about how important they are, but let's just get you some names of songs. Try "Deacon Blues" "Aja" and "Haitian Divorce". *This song was about his understanding, growing up about how the future would be. I.G.Y. was the International Geospherical Year. An anniversary where scientists gathered (I believe in Montreal or Oregon) to discuss what the next innovations of the upcoming millenia would be like. This song tries to dream of the ease where we will be "eternally free and eternally young", where machines does everything and we just bask in the utopia glow of our genius creations. A place where we are taught humanity by machines.
Never heard this one. Amazing. ❤
Don & Walter Becker were Steely Dan . They combined Jazz with rock ,blues .For recording they included some of the best musicians of the time , jazz fusion great Larry Carlton, saxophone Wayne Shorter . The drummer on their song Aja ( Steve Gadd ) is from Rochester NY where I lived for years. Every year they hold an international jazz festival there.. Warning ! Prog , fusion expands !
Yes!!! Shout out to whomever requested, classic! Production is always outstanding with Steely Dan, guess this is his solo album❤
One of my favorite songs. Always thought it was Steely Dan. Didn't realize it was his solo release. 👏🏾👏🏾
This song is off of his first album as a solo artist. Donald Fagen is 1/2 of the driving force behind Steely Dan, along with Walter Becker. This whole album is fire! I hope to see you react to more Donald Fagen from this or one of several other fire albums he made. Try Florida Room from his album Kamakyriad. Peace.
This is a song about the optimism that existed in the late 50's (when Fagen grew up). The Nightfly is one of the first 100% digitally recorded albums.
If you like this song then you'll love "Steely Dan" who Donald Fagen is one half of. They have quite the catalog!
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan are legendary, for complicatedly simple lyrics and perfectionist production. Even their trash outtakes that they chose not to use are better than most artists performing today. Warning: Steely Dan is a serious music rabbit hole, but worth the trip!
Dude, that was a great reaction to an amazing song! I loved how you tuned into jazz, rock, soul, and analog vs. digital instruments and you honed right into the 70s-80s era. Fun fact, I believe this was one of the first, if not the first, album to be all digitally records (way back in 1982, no less).
was nominated for the song of the year at the Grammy Awards 1982....
80's Grandma Jam! Vaguely remembered this song from my early childhood. Cool vibe!
Thank you Key Mo for the request!!!
I love your requests KeyMo. Very nice, quality although underrated songs but so so good. Nice reaction Jack, also this is from the 80s and I.G.Y. stands for International Geophysical Year. I mention a little more about it in the main comment section.
Thank you, Key Mo! 👏🏾
Absolutely great solo album by Fagen. ❤
I.G.Y. stands for International Geophysical Year.
Donald Fagen, along with Walter Becker, was Steely Dan. This bands discography is perhaps the deepest in the R&R/R&B era. Their lyrics are adult, smart, and clever. Sometimes perhaps too clever. SD songs should be listened to with the lyrics pulled up. SD is really fond of portraying a series of losers, misfits, the disenfranchised, and those of questionable character. All of their songs are well played, usually by hand picked studio musicians, and well produced. Try them doing "Black Cow", "Peg", "Aja", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Kid Charlemagne", "Reelin' In The Years", "Do It Again", "Dirty Work", "My Old School" and about 100 others. There really is no such thing as a bad SD song.
“Do It Again” is my favorite. “Black Cow” would be fun if solely for the Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz mentions. 😂 “Peg” has a cool vibe, too. ✌🏽
"Just machines to make big decisions, programmed by fellows with compassion and vision"... if only!
We have the diametrically opposite situation.
Check out Donald Fagan's songs, Snowbound and Mona. Wicked Sick!
Love this song! Howard Jones did a pretty decent cover of it also.
Thanks pal, uk bricklayer. Enjoyed! Keep going! 63 old git still reaching out! Thank you!
I really recommend a song by Philip Bailey called "Children of the Ghetto" really nice song.
I've only just came across him on his own lately but heard that song many times he did with Phil Collins "Easy Lover" a well known classic.
Can't believe I didnt get into his other songs before, he's class!
Steely Dan is the business though
Baby boy please check out Green Flower street and Glamour Profession
A good example of yacht rock
Can you please react to RKM & Ken-y specifically down. It’s old school reggaeton
Bongos- cardi b
Funkadelic promentalshitbackwash psychosis enema squad would be a great reaction
Sounds 'reggae' ?? Interesting...🎶
The guitar riffs are totally (slightly sped up) reggae, but not the bass ot the drums, tho.
Debut single from Fagan's first post-Steely Dan project.
