Let’s have this same conversation 10 games in and see where we are; considering Arsenal have Villa, Brighton, Man City , Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle in the 1st 10 games. It’s one of the toughest starts ive seen Arsenal have to a season but getting the top teams done and dusted before European and cup games get going may be a blessing,
Gary is sooooo out of touch with his takes. You can tell he doesn’t watch enough football anymore. Not even a Liverpool fan but to Chelsea and united in top 4 without Liverpool is INSANE. The spine of Liverpool eclipses both teams by such a distance it’s actually laughable that he’s a pundit.
Also as a Luton fan, I have to say what is wrong with us taking the PL money and reinvesting into the club to build a stronger foundation for the future? How is that somehow bad for the game; should be all be doing Leeds or Blackpool, blowing our budgets and crippling us for decades to come in the spirit of “having a go”. Such an arrogant viewpoint.
Neville didn't say that it is wrong to do that. He said this is what is happening over recent years, which means in the context of staying up most probably all promoted teams will go down because they prefer to invest in the club than in the playing squad (unlike Forest for eg), thereby reducing their chances of getting enough pts to stay up but improving the overall quality of the club infrastructure in the long run.
Championship clubs have been spending way beyond their means since the pandemic, the premier league offers an opportunity to get financially stable, luton have been smart
I think what he says is valid for most teams in this situation, but Luton in this case is an exception where the reinvestment is something that had to be done considering the size of your club in comparison to the others.
I don’t think Liverpool not signing a player is a factor, I mean look at Spurs 2018, they didn’t sign anyone and they got Top 4 and CL Final, and thats Spurs, Liverpool have by far a better squad. Arne Slots tactics are also similar to Klopp but if there’s something to worry about is Slot coming in, not Liverpool making transfers, they’ll definitely make Top 4 this season.
Surprised at the lack of talk around Newcastle from both of them. One of the best strikers in the league, no European football, more injury free than last year, Tonali coming back soon. I’ve got them to finish top 4! 👀

I think Liverpool will finish in the top four. Klopp left at the right time, it was getting too much trying to push through & win things on emotion & heart. Liverpool need to start using a more strategic planning & tactical organisation model instead of running harder & faster, trying to blow teams away like Klopp did. Don't get me wrong Klopp was brilliant & watching Mane, Firmino, Salah destroying teams was fantastic but after a few year's Liverpool were ending season's running on fumes. I believe Slot has the tactical organisation to stop that & to make Liverpool manage games better & smarter. I still think City will win the league & Arsenal will be right behind them but Liverpool are real dark horses this season.

One of the strongest squads in the league now, the bench was full of top 4 level players. People talking like they will struggle with Champions League clearly aren't aware of the squad depth, it's a totally different level to Newcastle's squad was even before all their injuries so it's such a lazy comparison.
It's 1 match in the season let's not get too excited west ham players needs to gel together villa will be in the top 6 but don't get hasty and say top 4 just yet a long season to go the prem is so bias it's a joke
@@thumpertoon76But more importantly, remind me of how many points Newcastle were behind Villa? Villa were the only team to do the double over Arsenal last season - but finished behind them? League position is surely a bigger point than individual games
City were missing De Bruyne for a massive chunk of last season and he's a key figure in their squad. They also have John Stones in their squad who is only ever fit for half a season at best. I don't agree with the comment that Arsenal had few injuries and that same for City. Both sides had injuries but City had a key player out for a massive chunk of the season.
The more Neville talks the more you realise he really does have very few intelligent things to say. Its all tropes, cliches, lazy punditry, bias and being contrary for the sake of it.
Neville's fixation with history being against slot because of history is based solely off Ferguson, and the biggest reason for the failure to replace Ferguson was that Ferguson himself drove the entire squad into the ground without preparing for the changing of the guard, and it needed almost complete replacement. Liverpool have replaced generational managers a number of times before, and they have a great track record of success. The only 'history' that is against Liverpool in that respect is Dalglish, and there were very large extenuating circumstances around that, given Hillsborough.
Yes not as much as Carra dislikes Arsenal.. I know cos he said it about 2/3yrs ago on MNF that he hates Arsenal; Pool were playing Arsenal in the FAC semi I think
As an arsenal fan i think people are massively underestimating newcastle. Id have them favourites to get top 4 ahead of chelsea, tottenham, utd, villa, maybe even 3rd as i expect liverpool to get less points this season.
I’ve predicted the same as Gary for the top 4. The reason I’ve predicted Liverpool to miss out is due to squad depth. They have a strong starting 11 but the moment a few get injured they don’t have the bench power to replace with the same level of player. Traditionally any team who does not invest in the team in the transfer market does not make top 4. If they make signings then might change it but as things stand can see them struggling especially when the fixtures become congested.
Carra not even having Newcastle top 7 is utterly mental 🤣Currently the bookies favourite's to finish 4th. Neville having Man Utd in 3rd and Chelsea in 4th is nearly as bad, wtf 😂
They finished 7th last season with half their squad in the treatment room and with Tonali banned for the entire season. It’s mental 😅 Not to mention they beat Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, hammered Spurs and Villa and beat Chelsea with a patchwork team mostly with a 17 year old in centre midfield and often full backs filling in as centre backs 😂
Garry didn’t give a good defense for united. United have players who are growing. You can not doubt the growth of Garnacho, Mainoo and Hojlund. Those players can only get better. They are bigger and better even this season. Apart from that they have more seniors players that are available. They would be better in attack with Mazaroui and Dalot and more solid in defense. If they can get a midfielder added they would be fine this season and get much better. I am a united fan but that team seems different this season.
You are right. There is also a lot more "football" in the back line. De Ligt and Mazroui are great in the buildup. Thats important for how ETH wants to play. I orry most about who has to score the goals. It is difficult to trust in Rashford after last season.
United main problem last year was the midfield in transition and lack of quality midfield depth, neither of these have been addressed, Casemiro was terrible last year, and I doubt he’s going to improve as he gets older. Goals is also an issue, Rashford on terrible form, and personally I see him getting dropped before long, offers nothing in attack, build up or defence. Realistically you need to halve the amount of goals conceded and double the amount of goals scored, and I don’t think any of your signings do that. I reckon Ten Haag gets sacked and you bring in Carrick or McKenna at some point in the season.
Yep. There’s a bit of a myth that Newcastle were undone by balancing the Champions League (largely by people that didn’t actually follow their season that closely), Newcastle were undone by freak injuries, like Pope dislocating a shoulder for example, Willock was out for months aggravating an old knee injury , as was Jacob Murphy, as was Joelinton, Botman (ACL twice), Barnes and Wilson, even Trippier and Isak had weeks off. The injuries had very little to do with Champions League football if you had a look at the timings of them. And in the end it was a threadbare Newcastle side that still finished 7th (ahead of Man Utd) and I believe I heard something that they are the first team in over a decade to finish 7th and not get any European football (I might be wrong) You only have to look at Newcastle’s 2nd Champions League game to realise they were already dealing with injuries and not long after they were thrusting 17 year old Miley into the starting 11 Then the other one is having the star summer signing ruled out for the season (Tonali) I find it amazing that everyone is seemingly singing Villa’s praises for the season but writing a Newcastle squad off that’s getting back to full selection, having added depth and have Sandro Tonali back 🤷🏻♂️
I understand gary referring to history in regards to perhaps liverpool struggling without their iconic manager like arsenal and manu did, but i think theres a big difference to liverpools current situation and thats arne slot has inherited a much better squad then moyes and emery had. Liverpool have 4 world class players that would get into any team in the world, allison, vvd, trent and salah, with players like this who are also natural leaders, you have a chance of real success.
Gary names 6 Utd midfield players that wouldn't get into LFCs side and try to argue they have more depth. This is the same clown that tried to argue last season that Klopp would swap his midfield for Utd's. Every team completely ran through their midfield last season and Utd were on of the teams that faced most shots of any.
@@jhaych No, they don't. Szoboszlai and Mac Allister are miles ahead of Bruno, who has been in decline for the past 3 years. Mainoo wouldn't get the spot ahead of Elliott. I think most fans are sleeping on Utd because of how bad they've been last season. Those signings definitely improve their style of play and the new coaching set up was primarily tasked in helping solve the midfield gap of last season. Martinez, Yoro and DeLigt could be contending for clean sheets. They are also signing Ugarte on loan. He is the south American Ngolo Kante, lol you lot are about to be surprised by utd n and it pains me to say as a Newcastle fan

The Greek appears to have learnt his lesson on that side of things and if we can improve our set pieces at both ends and our luck with VAR we'll be lower mid-table, which is what I expect for this season.

Ten hag is underrated. He has won a trophy each season.

One season wonders......
And in the end it was a threadbare Newcastle side that still finished 7th (ahead of Man Utd) and I believe I heard something that they are the first team in over a decade to finish 7th and not get any European football (I might be wrong)
You only have to look at Newcastle’s 2nd Champions League game to realise they were already dealing with injuries and not long after they were thrusting 17 year old Miley into the starting 11
Then the other one is having the star summer signing ruled out for the season (Tonali)
