Steely Dan is their own genre. You’ll see that as you dive more into their catalog of music. Their sound developed into a more funky, jazzy sound as they released each album. The best studio musicians were hired to work on each song on each album. Their grooves have been sampled literally hundreds of times. You’ll recognize their song Black Cow immediately which was sampled by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. I suggest a Steely Dan stream for these rock and roll hall of fame members. ❤️✌️😁

Good comments. While Steely Dan isn't my all-time favorite band (Zeppelin, The Who for me there), but I looooooooove this song. IMO, catchiest/smoothest guitar solo of ANY rock song. VERY smooth, mixing in the keyboards, etc...INCREDIBLE!!

The guitar solo is actually Denny Dias playing an electric sitar and the organ solo is played by Donald Fagen on some cheap piece of garbage organ he found in a thrift store, but it produced the sound he was going for. Fagen and Walter Becker were maniacal about every note being exactly what they wanted.

Hey TNT, Steely Dan were actually 2 people, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who surrounded their selves with the finest studio musicians around to produce a precise, clean sound.

    • @kbrewski1
      @kbrewski1 Год назад +3

Not at first. This debut album and the next 2, Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic, were the original Steely Dan Band. Fagen and Becker actually joined an existing group of Jeff Skunk Baxter, Denny Dias, Jim Hodder, and David Palmer. They toured and were a typical rock band until 1974. Only after Fagen and Becker decided they didn't want to keep touring did they transition to a "studio only" band with dozens of guest musicians.

Steely Dan wrote songs about some of the grittier aspects of life. "Do It Again" was about someone whose vices led him to keep on repeating the same mistakes, "Dirty Work" deals with infidelity, "Reeling In The Years" is a reflection on a wild relationship with an unappreciative girl - and these are on the FIRST album!
P.S. "Midnight Cruiser" deals with a couple of guys who are doing a last hurrah on the streets that are different from when they were younger. A very melancholy tune with a smooth jazz sound.

Man you nailed it... Steely Dan has very cryptic music, and to her point you get lost in the groove so you don't 100% pay attention to the words. Exactly how this song and MOST of their songs can be described. Cryptic, hidden meanings and lost on the melody. Pure Genius.

Tasha is so cute moving her shoulders immediately to the groove. 😆
This track, the very first track on the very first album, almost immediately became a HUGE radio hit. How's that for hitting the ground running. This was the original Steely Dan BAND. Fagen and Becker joined forces as songwriters for this preexisting band forned by guitarists Denny Dias and Jeff Skunk Baxter, also included drummer Jim Hodder and vocalist David Palmer. They were a fairly typical rock group circa 1972 and toured from 72>74. Only later did Fagen and Becker want to stop touring and concentrate on their obsession with studio perfection beginning with the Katy Lied album. They wanted to push more in the jazz fusion direction from what started as a more traditional rock band.
So this song has been an iconic and popular Steely Dan hit and favorite and has been played on the radio for 50+ years now. Still as smooth as silk and cool as ever! Only Steely Dan can make a song about a gambling addiction sound so laid back and groovin.

One of the things that still amazes me about the seventies and late sixties music is the huge diversity genre and styles.
The very same rock radio station you listen to Mike play Steely Dan 1 minute then Alice Cooper another, then the Beatles, Gordon Lightfoot, Marvin Gaye, Black Sabbath and then ELO. Jim Croce, The Rolling Stones.
The list goes on and on and the diversity goes on and on. And whether it was a ballad or folk music or hardcore rock and roll 95% of it was outstanding music.

Well said. This same point was discussed amongst a group of us a while back. Especially centered around the 70's. An amazing period.

@@tommythompson9565 just in an amusing note: I even remember a little song called "The Music Box" that accidentally got mixed in to the rock and roll station circulation when it was intended as a classical tune and it ended up being a hit because people liked it.
Does anyone else remember that song ?

Listen to the beginning of this and then listen to the beginning of "Jesus is Just Alright" by the Doobie Brothers ... so similar drum intro and both are fantastic songs.

Very insightful on the lyrics. And the music is hypnotic. It is definitely worth a second listening. The music and the lyrics are so good, they compete for your attention. Repeated listening reveals new treasures, that are seemingly endless. Great work! Keep going!

You need to do their later hits like Peg and Kid Charlemagne to see how their sound changed. They actually got better after each record.
