The sound is totally unique. No other smooth song like it. There is a lot of happening with the melodies and the singing. It's a complicated mesh of happy grooves with a sobering message.
@Cathy Moore Steeley Dan was not only popular with regular people. They were loved by many musicians and it was considered an honor if you ended up on a final cut of the album. They'd have dozens of guys/gals come in and play solos. Picking the one they thought worked best for the song.
SOME PEOPLE UNDERSTAND LYRICS AND THINK ABOUT JUST ONE VERSE !!!!! BUT IT'S WORDS ARE SO IMPORTANT. JUST LIKE SAYING I LOVE YOU OR I'm SORRY... BUT IT'S MORE IN THE WHY OR HOW..😊 LIKE IN THE THE XMAS JINGLE BELLS SONG.. NOBODY BARELY HEARS ( COME ON JINGLE HORSE PICK YOUR FEET) THATS WHY THE MUSIC WAS SO GREAT 💥💥💥
Every member of the Doobie Brothers brings something different to the band. The sound of the band changed over time and while some didn't like the change when Michael McDonald joined, I think it was for the better.
I’ve loved this since I was in 5th grade. I love these guys. Yes, you’ve heard Michael McDonald and probably never knew it. Steely Dan, Christoper Cross, Kenny Loggins and many, many more artists have solicited his vocals. He’s iconic, for sure.
This song hit number one and was song of the year 1979. It was a HUGE hit that was all over the radio that entire year, then after the grammies, it seemed like another year. It was SOOOOO good, but they wore it slick.
Can’t go wrong with Michael McDonald! Michael collaborated with a lot of artists in his day including, Christopher Cross’ “Ride like the Wind”, Patti LaBelle’s “On my own”, Kenny Loggins’ “This is it”, Steely Dan’s “Peg” and even did the soundtrack song, “Sweet Freedom” on the movie “Running Scared” that starred Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal.
It's nice and also sweet when the younger generations find out that music was even special in the old days !!!!! If I had to play something it would be the Original Chic....with the Good Times full length Version or Shalamar or SOS Band.....
Can’t beat Michael McDonald. Wrote SOOOO many incredible hits for Motown, Snd sang backup for LOTS of bands. The Doobie Brothers “Long Train Running” ❤
Mike McDonald was a phenomenon - his upper range was legendary. Steely Dan brought him in to sing backup because he could hit the high notes in full chest voice, not having to switch into head voice (falsetto). Put that together with his keyboard skills and songwriting, and it was like this little nuclear explosion. Just amazing.
Michael McDonald sang backup on many songs in the 80's including: I'll Be Over You. [TOTO]; Ride Like the Wind. [Christopher Cross]; I Really Don't Know Anymore (I Really Can't Say). [Christopher Cross]; Yah-Mo Be There. [James Ingram]; This Is It. [Kenny Loggin]; Peg. [Steely Dan]; On My Own. [Patti LaBelle].
" but what a fool believes, he sees, the wise man has the power( to reason away) what seems to be, is always better than nothing, than nothing at all."
Written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. Produced by Ted Templeman. In the same decade, he produced Van Halen. Released 1 year after What a Fool Believes. Suggested songs where MM sang and/or wrote:.1 Christopher Cross and MM sing Ride Like the Wind (I can play this song over and over!) 2 MM and late James Ingram, RIP, sing Yah Mo Be There. 3 MM and Patti Labelle sing On My Own 4 Van Halen performs I'll Wait live in Montreal. (Written by them and MM) 5 Toto and MM perform I'll Be Over You. What a Fool Believes won the Grammys for Original Song in 1980.🏆 This song also appeared in the TV 📺 comedy What's Happening, which was released 45 years ago 🎂 As a boy 👦 walking in my hometown San Francisco 🌉 , I heard this often. The Doobie Brothers is the most famous band from San Jose, CA. Some of my relatives saw them when they often played in San Jose State University. Great song 👍 The song with the same keys 🔑 you heard is Steal Away (From the Night) sung by Robbie Dupree. Written by him and Rick Chudacoff.
He never got credit for writing lyrics to I’ll Wait from Van Halen’s 1984 album. His name wasn’t written as one of the people who wrote lyrics for the song. I’m sure David Lee Roth had something to do with it. Ted Templeman and Roth wanted the song removed from the album, Eddie Van Halen liked the song and it obviously wasn’t removed. It was a hit and topped out at number 13 on the Billboard Charts. It’s the only single from the album that didn’t have a video recorded to be played on Mtv. Jump, Hot For Teacher and Panama all had videos. I guess Roth didn’t want to record a video. I think it’s the best song from 1984.
My album states that I'll Wait was written by Van Halen. Michael McDonald did not get credit until decades later. Wikipedia.org lists his name in the credits.
One of the Saddest Songs I have ever heard.. I have lived it.. complete with her saying,"Im sorry"... We were married for a year.. 40 years ago.. I am the Fool..
steely dan i got the news on that one michael has his own lead part after the middle of the song, while on ''peg'' from the same album he sings the backing vocals. its beyond brilliant. album is called ''Aja''
As far as I've ever been able to tell, it's about a man who believed he had this woman under his thumb and she'd never leave him. She kept apologizing to him for things but "as she rises through her apology anyone else would surely know, he's watching her go". He can't believe she's gone away.
Michael sang a lot of backup with Steely Dan. Check out Peg were he sang three or four part harmonizes with himself as the back ground vocals. Also. This tune was written by Michael and Kenny Logins and believe it won a Grammy for song of the year when it was released.
Very COOL, guys. Love it. This was just your standard radio fare when I was a kid in the 1970's. Watchin ya and diggin it. Stay cool. Keep-a-rockin. Shoutout from this old, longhaired, hippy dude in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Go with God. Peace and love y'all. Be seeing ya on the next.
..Fun Fact: The singer of this song is Michael McDonald. He is considered to he the most soulful white singer in the history of music. He composed this song with another singer called Kenny Loggins. And recorded this song with his band the Doobie Brothers. He also is a great Gospel singer. Not bad for a white guy to accomplish that in the genres of soul, R&B and Gospel.
I keep coming back to my favorite Boston Songs "Peace Of Mind" and "Hitch A Ride". Love Michael McDonald, love this song. "Minute By Minute" is another iconic MM song.
The first verse explains the song. He came out of no where after not seeing her for years remembering a past between then that didn't happen(not the words to the song bur a quick summary). Thats why she said sorry and walked away in the second verse. Basically, he loved her, but he remembered a different relationship than what they had.
The thing about these Yacht Rock (or soft/smooth rock) classics is they're made to be played on repeat, that's probably why they dominated radio back in the late '70s/early '80s, whereas with some other genres, just one listen will make you want to take a break from listening to the radio for a while...I love listening to other Yacht Rock classics like 'Somebody's Baby' by Jackson Browne and songs from some newer artists from Northern Beaches, Sydney, who are influenced by Yacht Rock like Sticky Fingers ('Gold Snafu') Angus and Julia Stone ('Chateau'), Ocean Alley ('Knees') and Lime Cordiale ('Addicted to The Sunshine')...Happy listening, guys! :)
I aways thought of this as more of class reunion song. Some dude thought he had a relationship with a girl back in HS.. And always thought she and he would someday meet again and the she would suddenly realize she loved him. And they would live happily ever after. But the reality is, she barely remember him. She just thought of him as a nice guy she once knew and would never consider him for anything more. But the dude just holds on to his fantasy of "someday".
This song captures an intangable so well. Guy has a fantasy life built on a girl he loves being nice to him. He can see them getting married, growing old together. Meanwhile, the girl never thought twice about him in terms of a relationship. Just an old friend. "...tryng hard to recreate what has yet to be created..." " She had a place in his life. He never made her think twice.."
Great song. The guitarist sitting also played in many other groups including the group Spirit. You can see him going crazy in, "I got a line on you." Always enjoy your reaction / reviews. Oh, the guitarist, Jeff Baxter!! He's great. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
I remember i got my doobie brother wig off QVC so warm and cozy. Its always better than nothing. Nothing at all everybody else would surely know. The wise man has the power!
These days you could easily hear this song (as GREAT as it is) getting piped in over the supermarket sound system or while you're at the dentist getting your teeth cleaned. That's just what happens over time. Guaranteed you've heard it dozens of times in the ether as you go about your life or even on the radio when you were a youngster. It's a huge and VERY WELL KNOWN song. You should listen to the studio version ... this is a very well recorded track and you're missing out sound-wise with this video version - wherever it came from. How about the fact that M.M. is singing lead WHILE banging out the main song riff on the keyboard!
This isn't about Michael McDonald singing back up on a song but Eddie Money. I'm 54 and have been a huge EM fan forever. I just found out THIS year that he sang back up on Kenny Loggins' "I'm Alright" featured in the open scene of "Caddyshack." A movie I've seen a thousand times! Now I can't "unhear" it. It's so obvious. Ha!
This is Old School. You can't beat Old School!! You two are youngins. Those of us that are 40 and older , We are very familiar with the Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald, Tom Jones, Bobby Caldwell etc..
Iconic song! Michael has sung with so many icons too, Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald, On my own Peg, Steely Dan (Michael on backing vocals) Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald, This is it Christopher Cross, Ride like the wind(Michael on backing vocals)
If you want to hear Michael McDonald's singing background listen to Heart To Heart by Kenny Loggins ( also a former Doobie Brother ) Michael's voice is unmistakable and it's a awesome songs
You guys took me back!!...I love the one Michael McDonald he did with Patti Label...Great Song, Great Duet but Patti of course blows him away and I leaves him in it because of her talent!! I believe its called On My Own
Dang girl I’m addicted to your smile! The videos that you both do are special and bring back a lot of memories…M.M. and (The D.B.)are such iconic musicians! Keep up the good work…Tash you keep me smiling! (Yours is nice too brother)
I think I'd offer the interpretation of the lyrics as this: "She had a place in his life, he never made her think twice" really means he was dreaming about her all the time but she never even noticed him...but what a fool believes, he sees I guess 😅
It might have been in a movie or something too. A few years ago I was taking my niece to her first concert (she was 15, and she was going to Elton John...I have some influence on her lol) and her mom and Aunt came along too. Neither knew much about Elton or his songs. But at the concert...they both were shocked they knew all of the songs. Cultural osmosis is weird.
Michael McDonald was, and still is, the quintessential soft rock songster. If y'all haven't done This Is It and Heart To Heart by Kenny Loggins or Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross, he is background in those, and they are gooooood.
I did one studio session with Michael M. (vocals on the song "Sweet Freedom") and he was: 1) the nicest guy, and 2) a seriously bad-ass singer/scatter who could come up with great improvisational sh|t on demand. Colleagues of mine who worked with him in studio more than I did (in the '80s and '90s) told me he was super down-to-earth and super unpretentious.
Great reaction to a great song! I bet you would like the Doobies doing “Taking It To The Streets,” they have a great live version of that. Keep up the good work!
It always keeps a huge smile on my face! I don’t care about the lyrics: it’s an uplifting song that makes you still believe that life will be good … sometimes 😊
'But what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.' Man this line has stuck with me all my life. It's damn near a life philosophy. I dunno if you ever read old comments, but MM famously sings background and is sampled in a lot of Steely Dan songs.
"Ride Like The Wind" - Christopher Cross. "This Is It" - Kenny Loggins. "Bad Sneakers", "Peg" - Steely Dan. "On My Own" - Patti LaBelle. +++++ Michael was everywhere.
Michael McDonald one of the best voices period.
I understand what you mean, Tasha about wanting to hear it over and over again. It’s been 44 years, and I still haven’t gotten tired of this song.
There is an outside live version somewhere on RUclips.
The drummer is going pretty quick. It's a nice version.
YA THERE'S A GOOD LIVE ONE😊
The sound is totally unique. No other smooth song like it. There is a lot of happening with the melodies and the singing. It's a complicated mesh of happy grooves with a sobering message.
The Doobie Brothers Are The Best 💯,Nice Reaction Guy's
Michael famously sang incredibly difficult backup vocals on Steely Dan's "Peg", which I think is the best pop song ever.
I’m partial to that song myself! ❤
Brilliant track is 'Peg' one of Steely Dans best
Peg is awesome, but I honestly think that Steely Dan is one of the best older bands out there. Their sound is truly unique.
@Cathy Moore Steeley Dan was not only popular with regular people. They were loved by many musicians and it was considered an honor if you ended up on a final cut of the album. They'd have dozens of guys/gals come in and play solos. Picking the one they thought worked best for the song.
Blue eyed soul , harmonies smooth like butter
You got it right. It's about a guy that has a relationship with an unobtainable woman in his mind. She doesn't even know he exists.
You’ve got it❤
SOME PEOPLE UNDERSTAND LYRICS AND THINK ABOUT JUST ONE VERSE !!!!! BUT IT'S WORDS ARE SO IMPORTANT. JUST LIKE SAYING I LOVE YOU OR I'm SORRY... BUT IT'S MORE IN THE WHY OR HOW..😊 LIKE IN THE THE XMAS JINGLE BELLS SONG.. NOBODY BARELY HEARS ( COME ON JINGLE HORSE PICK YOUR FEET)
THATS WHY THE MUSIC WAS SO GREAT 💥💥💥
This song won the Grammy for "Song Of The Year" in 1979
If I came down with dementia and this song went on repeat indefinitely, I would not complain. Of course, I'd be crazy but I'd be happy
100
The Doobies never had a bad song , great reaction ! "It keeps you running" , another great song.
It seems like they probably came together for a jam session and produced some of the best music of our time! Just pure talent!
Every member of the Doobie Brothers brings something different to the band. The sound of the band changed over time and while some didn't like the change when Michael McDonald joined, I think it was for the better.
-#cheers-- !-
I’ve loved this since I was in 5th grade. I love these guys. Yes, you’ve heard Michael McDonald and probably never knew it. Steely Dan, Christoper Cross, Kenny Loggins and many, many more artists have solicited his vocals. He’s iconic, for sure.
Ambrosia
The Doobie Brothers were a great band on their own but with Michael McDonald, it was the best.
He also wrote the Van Halen song I'll Wait off of 1984. One of the best late Diamond Dave Era VH singles. RIP EVH
This song hit number one and was song of the year 1979. It was a HUGE hit that was all over the radio that entire year, then after the grammies, it seemed like another year. It was SOOOOO good, but they wore it slick.

I totally agree! (And not because we have the same last name!) I especially loved Sweet Freedom in the movie. Great movie too!
Michael Mcdonald also sand back up in the song by Toto "I'LL BE OVER YOU", which is one of my favorite songs ever. ❤
Thanx
He can harmonize with anyone and anything!
His voice is like a warm plushy blanket you want to wrap yourself up in. ❤
Long train running! It's funky with so much soul! IT'S FIRE!
Excellent reaction!!! Michael McDonald has a lot of soul in his voice. Very unique voice.
It's nice and also sweet when the younger generations find out that music was even special in the old days !!!!! If I had to play something it would be the Original Chic....with the Good Times full length Version or Shalamar or SOS Band.....
I’m in love with Michael’s voice, his songs he wrote, and his blue eyes too loveys! He’s full of so much love and soul.
Can’t beat Michael McDonald. Wrote SOOOO many incredible hits for Motown, Snd sang backup for LOTS of bands. The Doobie Brothers “Long Train Running” ❤
My fav! OUTSTANDING!
Love LONG TRAIN RUNNING!
I was a 16yr old punk the first time I saw The Doobies LIVE. OMG the memories
I'm mostly a metalhead. But this is easily one of my favourite songs.
Same here… hey man it’s good freakin music. If you say you don’t like this you’re lying lol
Same too, but there's nothing like some good Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, Etc!
Same
Now yall are ready for the Eagles; "Hotel California", "Take It to the Limit", "I Can't Tell You Why".
These songs will blow their minds😂
Michael McDonald sang backup on many songs in the 80's including: I'll Be Over You. [TOTO]; Ride Like the Wind. [Christopher Cross]; I Really Don't Know Anymore (I Really Can't Say). [Christopher Cross]; Yah-Mo Be There. [James Ingram]; This Is It. [Kenny Loggin]; Peg. [Steely Dan]; On My Own. [Patti LaBelle].
They won a grammy for this song!!!
" but what a fool believes, he sees, the wise man has the power( to reason away)
what seems to be, is always better than nothing, than nothing at all."
This song was song of the year in late seventies, maybe 79🎶🎶🎶🎶
This and It Keeps You Running. MM's voice could drop nun panties. Iconic blue eyed soul on the level of Elvis, Joe, Greg, and Daryl.
As a boy 👦 walking in my hometown San Francisco 🌉 , I heard this often. The Doobie Brothers is the most famous band from San Jose, CA. Some of my relatives saw them when they often played in San Jose State University.
Great song 👍

Best moment of their reaction is at 5:55 Tasha's expression says it all.
The studio version is fire.
I swear!!! 🙌
The live version from their Santa Barbara concert is the best version, hands down.
Good music can't be replaced. Good lyrics can't be replaced, especially when it hits your soul.
One of the Saddest Songs I have ever heard.. I have lived it.. complete with her saying,"Im sorry"... We were married for a year.. 40 years ago.. I am the Fool..
Michael Mcdonald does back up vocals for TOTO , STEELY DAN, and CHRISTOPHER CROSS those are the ones I can think of...
Brings back so many memories growing up
Exactly
Doobie Brothers
Taking It To The Streets
Did you guys listen to Patty LaBelle and brother Michael?
On my own...
Bad to the bone 😂
steely dan i got the news on that one michael has his own lead part after the middle of the song, while on ''peg'' from the same album he sings the backing vocals. its beyond brilliant. album is called ''Aja''
Ambrosia - How much I feel... 70s baby!!

My dad had the greatest music collection. He LOVED the DB so much we named our dog Doobie in his honor.
One of the greatest rock songs of all time and one of the greatest rock voices of all time.
Some of the bands had talent pools so deep it’s criminal.
Been loving this song for decades. You are in for a real treat with yacht rock! Have fun.
Michael sang a lot of backup with Steely Dan. Check out Peg were he sang three or four part harmonizes with himself as the back ground vocals. Also. This tune was written by Michael and Kenny Logins and believe it won a Grammy for song of the year when it was released.

Michael mcdonald has a song with patti labelle called “on my own”
..Fun Fact:
The singer of this song is Michael McDonald.
That's what music used to be. Pure Talent! All singing great while playing their instruments great. So many bands in the 70's and 80's doing it!
One of my favorite rock songs of all time. Incredible production. Sounds just as good now as it did when I first heard it 50 years ago.
My favorite song of all time. Love the lyrics.
Thanks! Y'all keep bringing the goodness, earning every good thing from your efforts here. God bless you.
Thank you 😊🙏🏾
One of my go-to over and over songs is The Weight by The Band (Studio version as well as the Last Waltz concert with The Staple Singers)!
she gets it...the pain lives on in many fool's memories.
I saw the Doobies open for Stevie Miller back in 1995. Great band...
Yes! One persons perception may not be reality.
This is it! Kenny Loggins w/ Michael McDonald🎹🎸😃
Michael sings backup in Ride like the wind, Christopher Cross song
Was song of the year!
A LOT of artists wanted the Michael's stank on their songs. He showed up everywhere.
This song captures an intangable so well. Guy has a fantasy life built on a girl he loves being nice to him. He can see them getting married, growing old together. Meanwhile, the girl never thought twice about him in terms of a relationship. Just an old friend.

Great song. The guitarist sitting also played in many other groups including the group Spirit. You can see him going crazy in, "I got a line on you."
Always enjoy your reaction / reviews. Oh, the guitarist, Jeff Baxter!! He's great.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
You mentioned Christopher Cross. Michael McDonald sang backup in his song "Ride Like The Wind". He's also in "Peg" by Steely Dan.
I remember i got my doobie brother wig off QVC so warm and cozy. Its always better than nothing. Nothing at all everybody else would surely know. The wise man has the power!
It won song of the year!
I was lucky enough to see them live three times. First in '76. Consummate pros (and the loudest concert I ever attended).
These days you could easily hear this song (as GREAT as it is) getting piped in over the supermarket sound system or while you're at the dentist getting your teeth cleaned. First time seeing Tasha. Gotta keep her on. She’s a great reactor! She’s bubbly and fun
This tune "What A Fool Believes" by the Dobbie Brothers won the Grammys for best song and best record of the year 1980.
This isn't about Michael McDonald singing back up on a song but Eddie Money.
I'm 54 and have been a huge EM fan forever. I just found out THIS year that he sang back up on Kenny Loggins' "I'm Alright" featured in the open scene of "Caddyshack."
A movie I've seen a thousand times! Now I can't "unhear" it. It's so obvious. Ha!
My Man Michael MacDonald 💥 This Man is Fine🥰
This is Old School. You can't beat Old School!! You two are youngins. Those of us that are 40 and older , We are very familiar with the Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald, Tom Jones, Bobby Caldwell etc..
Iconic song! Michael has sung with so many icons too,
Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald, On my own
Peg, Steely Dan (Michael on backing vocals)
Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald, This is it
Christopher Cross, Ride like the wind(Michael on backing vocals)
You forgot "Yah mo be there" with the late great James Ingram.
@@Soulspinner001 that's because I'm not familiar with that song
Michael Mac is unbelievably good. So is the band. Just great. Nice reaction. Thanks.
If you want to hear Michael McDonald's singing background listen to Heart To Heart by Kenny Loggins ( also a former Doobie Brother ) Michael's voice is unmistakable and it's a awesome songs

You should check out THIS IS IT by Kenny Loggins and Michael Mcdonald .. one of my all time favorites !!
When you said you had heard the chorus. You might have heard Aretha Franklins version which was released in 1980 Doobie Brothers released this in 1979
One of my favs I still listen to alot this very day..I’m 48yo my 9 yo girl loves it also in 2023 ..it makes me happy to hear
One of the greatest Doobie Brothers classics of all time!! 🤩
The Doobie Brothers were in a 2-part episode of What's Happening! Some very funny moments.
The drummer on this performance was a female who played jazz with icon Stan Getz in the 60s she was around 14.
Michael McDonald was, and still is, the quintessential soft rock songster. If y'all haven't done This Is It and Heart To Heart by Kenny Loggins or Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross, he is background in those, and they are gooooood.
Live performance of a timeless classic.Where have the past 45 years gone???
An incredibly sad song. I've loved it since I noticed the lyrics. Great reaction. Thank you.
This is my suggestion too.
Or Black Water.
Yes, it’s about unrequited love.
It always keeps a huge smile on my face! I don’t care about the lyrics: it’s an uplifting song that makes you still believe that life will be good … sometimes 😊
Try The Doobie Brothers - Black Water if you haven't yet
One of my favorite bands but yet again the 70’s music is the best 😊
'But what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.' Man this line has stuck with me all my life. It's damn near a life philosophy. I dunno if you ever read old comments, but MM famously sings background and is sampled in a lot of Steely Dan songs.
For real, it doobie what that means. Y'all gotta check out Michael's duet with James Ingram, "Yah Mo B There."
"Ride Like The Wind" - Christopher Cross.
"This Is It" - Kenny Loggins.
"Bad Sneakers", "Peg" - Steely Dan.
"On My Own" - Patti LaBelle.
+++++
Michael was everywhere.
