This isn't just Queen's best performance... This is one of the greatest live performances of all time!

You asked how it felt to be there......Well i was 20 years old and I was lucky enough to attend that concert.....there are no words to describe the energy that was in the crowd. I was about 40 feet from the stage, I can honestly say that I really cant remember being more "alive" then I was for roughly 21 minutes that they played. After they finished...I was not only physically exhausted but Emotionally.
me too, I remember that queen stole the show, though they were almost last minute additions to the set. I recall, that the musicans who came before were a bit mellow, but when queen came on it was like they turned the volume up to the max (11). We were told that the roadies for the band switched the limiters on or off, ( i cant remember which) though it was not supposed to be done? So they blew the place apart.

Wait until he learns that the guitarist built his own guitar, that the bassist built the amps they used in recordings, that the drummer was studying to be an oral surgeon, the bassist in electrical engineering, the guitarist is a PhD in Astrophysics. Oh, and Bohemian Rhapsody is strongly influenced by opera, which they all liked.

I had no idea! It’s funny ... when I was just barely into the teenage years, “Radio Gaga” got a ton of airplay on MTV, and I hated it. No idea who sang it, really didn’t know who Queen was, and I would have been shocked to learn “We Will Rock You” came from the same band. There are some good things about growing older. 😜
The gaga and goo goo bits were because roger taylor had a baby at the time and that is where they got those particular lyrics from!!!
I was 12 years old when I was there and will never forget it. EVER
All the crowd was singing! When they came on stage, they changed the atmosphere. It was brilliant! People heard it for miles!

That little kiss he did...he did at every gig...it was always for his mum who would be watching him from her home....he never forgot to do it...it was him letting his mum know how much he loved her....eyes full of tears now !!!

Between the ages of 14-20 I went to every Queen gig going; saw them live more times than I can remember. They were never less than impressive. Freddie was the greatest showman I've ever seen. A lifetime later, and I again find myself going to see them every time they play in my country, and they're still brilliant even without Fred and without John.

When Queen sang they blew everyone away to such an extent the other bands complained because they couldn't do as well, Freddie owned not only the crowd but live aid as well, "true."
72,000. Yep. No cell phones, no auto tune, no fighting, everyone just chillin and having a great time.
And the majority of those people weren't there specifically for Queen. Tons of other acts (people that I remember that came on before Queen were Sting, Phil Collins, U2, and Dire straights were on before Queen and after them it was David bowie, The Who, Elton John and Paul McCartney) were there also performed there that day. Fun Fact - Elton John went up to Freddie and asked him something along the lines of 'How am I going to top that?!'
They should make a no-phone festival. Make everyone leave them in lockers.

Freddie was the undisputed greatest frontman/showman in music history no other can touch his ability to hold a crowd in his palm.
When they did a concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the entire stadium sang Love of My Life, in English. Brazil's language is Portuguese, but people loved them so much they learned it!!

The bass guitarist was John deacon. He is also an electrical engineer and hand-built Queen's amps.
This was the night that almost EVERY band in the world OPENED up for QUEEN!!

I watched a veejay on VH1 talk about being backstage at that concert and he said that at the time, Queen was slated to be one of the opening acts, to be "fit in" between bigger artists as a sort of "breather" for the audience. They respected and admired Queen and thought that having an "OG" band to would help to keep the crowd warmed up for the more anticipated artists/groups.
When they saw how Freddie and the boys took that stage and began OWNING it, not just warming up the crowd but setting them on fire, all the reporters scrambled to get more recording devices up and running.
Then it was said that David Bowie was slated to go up next and basically, was astounded at what he'd just witnessed Queen do on stage. He was reported to have even exclaimed out loud: How am I supposed to follow THAT?!! *while gesturing at Queen as they closed their performance.*
I found it hilarious back then and it still makes me smile when I think of how Queen showed the promoters that day that even if they were considered old school and faded, their music endured to still be loved by all there, and that their ability to take over the stage and give an amazing show was still very much obvious and shining brightly.

Live aid was a charity concert with the world’s biggest music stars, and every artist/band was given 20 mins. And these 20 mins are considered to be the best live concert performance ever
Freddie worked hard to be play it. He had AIDS and his Dr. told him not to, since he had a throat issue.

I don't know if this really happened but if not, it's still great, supposedly a reporter once asked Freddy what instrument he played best and he said, without hesitation, "The audience".

If you listen carefully, especially with the older Queen songs, you can hear the audience singing every single lyric...word for word. It is awesome...goose bumps!!!

It's the same with Meatloaf. He could just come out, sit down, and let the band play. The audience would do the lyrics. Went to the opening night of Bat Out Of Hell the musical. They had to be perfect cuz the audience knew every word of every song.
I remember hearing that there were arguments backstage that no one wanted to follow Queen... Bowie drew the short straw and got thru cos he was so different to Freddie, but hell... who COULD follow Freddie at his best, in his element and wired to everyone in that stadium!

I was there, it was amazing, it was loud, the crowd was brilliant, such a happy feeling, just joyous. So many legendary performances in one day with iconic bands, so much quality on display. It gives me goosebumps watching you enjoy it, I was about 9 feet from the front towards the left of the stage as you look at it. My mind is still blown when I think how lucky I was to be there. My generations Woodstock. I still have my ticket and programme. I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for the memories. 👍👍👍

Freddie was advised by a doctor not to perform here - he had major throat problems. He sang like that with Laryngitis.

The crazy thing about this crowd is that it wasn’t even a “Queen crowd” they went to see all sorts of bands that day so not all of them were out and out Queen fans, yet every single one of them knew every Queen song and all the cues as well as being completely under Freddie’s spell!
It was stunning. They were putty in his hands....in his thrall...the MAGICIAN

Crazy Little Thing Called Love was a tribute song to Elvis. Elvis died 2 years before the song was written. 72,000 were at Live Aid in London. 89,484 people in Philly.
Queen's Live Aid performance was a Master Class in musical performance. Especially when you find the story behind it and Freddie was told NOT to perform because he'd been sick and could damage his vocal cords permanently. He of course ignored that. The entire band picked up the little slack Freddie left (as he was careful about pushing his voice) -- it's truly a world-class performance in a 20 min set. Attendance was just under 90k
My mum and dad is in that crowd somewhere. They said it was amazing. Took them over an hr to get out and then the train was packed on the way home. I was 5 years old and at my grandparents. Was raised on queen and so was my son.😁

No doubt it was!! This was not Queens best live performance but it was definitely the best live performance that day and they stole the show no hands down. Elton John told the guys when they came offstage that there was nobody that was going to follow that!! Nobody was going to follow that act, and I can't remember who went on stage directly after Queen but I wouldn't have wanted it to be myself.

Dr. Brian May CBE is the guitarist, who is also an astrophysicist and a recipient of the Order of the British Empire.
Roger Taylor is the drummer and actually hits the highest notes in the band.
John Deacon is the quietest, he's the bassist. But he's the secret weapon--he wrote many of the most iconic hits.
Fact- all 4 members of Queen have written number 1 hits. Freddie is phenomenal but all 4 are fantastic!

Queen were in the doldrums when this concert took place. This performance convinced them to produce another album and tour it. From that tour, the Queen Live at Wembley double album was produced. I recommend that to you.
I was so lucky to attend this event in London - I can still feel the atmosphere.
I was there in the flesh, towards the back in the stands with my then boyfriend. The atmosphere was electric, everyone was hyped up. Queen definitely stole the show not just at Wembley but also in Philadelphia where they were being broadcast live. Freddie even had that crowd joining in!
It also has to be remembered that Queen were not even on the bill when the tickets first went out on sale, The the majority of the crowd weren’t even Queen fans , yet they could still get two massive crowds one in the Uk the other in the USA into the palm of theyre hands. Of course we shouldn’t forget the worldwide TV audience as well.
It was hot and I almost missed Queens set due to that age old problem we ladies suffer from , queuing for the restroom! I shudder at that thought imagine being there then missing out because you had a call of nature!
Good for you - I was privileged to see Queen three times - with the original band including Fred - and even got to meet them briefly when I was 16 - first show I saw -most memorable of all!
If I knew how long Freddie had left before he stopped performing live I would’ve made more effort in going to see them, but no one can predict the future.
I’ve never been a person who went to lots of concerts, to tell the truth the Live Aid concert has been the only one.
Would I go to. Queen concert now probably not, age ill health and a fear of large crowds, even facebook, Twitter and Instagram scare me. I can just cope with adding a few remarks on a few threads on this platform.
@@nicolalodge-bruce4090 I am much older now, too - just turned 59 - my precious memories are from the first time - 1977 - I was 16 - and a couple of subsequent concerts over next few years... I would not go out of my way, now... although Brian May is my long-time crush, I still think I would have a hard time not seeing Freddie... :)

I was in London that day, but not at Live Aid. I was in the Royal Tournament but everyone was trying to watch it if they could, or listen to it when they had the chance. The whole of London was buzzing that day!

I’ve always said it must be the greatest,most incredible feeling to have a huge crazy audience sing your songs with you. Look at that crowd!! What a high!
And this is not even Queen’s audience. Many in the audience were not even fans and yet Freddie captivated every soul in that stadium. ( around 100.000 people)
Wembley only held 82,000 for football matches, less for concerts because of the staging. This was the maximum possible crowd for a gig at 72,000.

@@Thailandescapades No, right, right, right. Several members of my family across three generations worked at Wembley Stadium so I know perfectly well how many people it could accommodate for concerts.
However, just to please you, a very basic internet search: "How many people were at Live Aid?" immediately returned the information "Wembley Stadium in London, 72,000".

I was almost 7 when I saw this live on TV, and been a huge Queen fan since, as well as a total musicnut. Thanks to Freddie, John, Brian and Roger.

Aleksander Finstad yes and Brian and Rogers sang along with Freddie.. John Deacon was scared to sing and he said he couldn’t for years but after he got accustomed to it, he started singing in the concerts. You can see him singing on the stage at live aid. I love the Deacy Ampifier he created that made the good tours sound like anything I wanted. They could make this sound like an orchestra, etc.. John Deacon and Brian May both had doctorates and Brian was astrophysics and John Deacon was an electrical engineer. It’s hard to believe that Roger studied biology and dentistry and then Freddie Mercury was an architectural design and art student. These guys were all college educated but they had this passion and love for music, they were darn good!

And, all 4 wrote hit songs that were #1. This is a truncated version of a concert. Estimated crowd numbers around the world were over 1 billion people watched it. I was 20 and home from University for summer break and had to fight my daddy physically to watch it. (He was an alcoholic and I was 20 years old, his baby girl, it was more a keep away for him, but I eventually got the remote from him. It's the first concert of its kind. Artists from the States and the UK playing back and forth. David Bowie is said to not want to follow Queen on stage after this performance. 85,000-90,000 people and they weren't all Queen fans. The largest crowd that Queen performed exclusively for is over 200,000 people, I believe it was in Spain.
Each group was given only 20 minutes. He and Brian May come back out and sing a song that is more important today than when they wrote it. "Is This the World We Created".
The only band in each member wrote at least one number one hit....

Knowing that they had twenty minutes to play , Queen planned their set to please their audience. They played shorter versions of their epic songs and the crowd went wild. There were 90k plus in Wembly and an estimated billion around the world on tv. Btw Brian and his Dad built that guitar when he was a teen and he still plays it on tour today. That ripped tone comes from the coin he plays it with instead of a pick. Fred wrote crazy little thing called love in the bath as a tribute to Elvis.

I wasn't physically at the concert, at either of the two stadiums being used, in the US and UK, but I was one of nearly 2 billion people around the world watching live on TV, and I don't know if it's possible to really experience this event the same way now. It's a shame really, and I can only imagine what watching it then would have been like if we had the internet, like we do now.
You’re absolutely right he is one of the best guitars out there. Brian May is one of the greatest guitarists in the world and he deserves his place in the rock and roll hall of fame
Robert Petre Yes he is!! Dr. Brian May!! ❤️ he’s always been underrated but his guitar can saying and he plays it that well. I loved hearing his story about how he and his dad made the red special because they couldn’t afford an electric guitar. His dad was an electrical engineer and they took bits and pieces of wood & his mom’s sewing Old sewing materials and made that guitar. Beautiful father and son story❤️❤️ Brian is a listed number 10 or 11 on the best guitarist of all time. John Deacon number nine has the best bass player and dad Roger Taylor number five has the best singing drummer. Freddie Mercury is listed as number two on the front man but I still think he is better than Robert Plant. Led Zeppelin is hugely popular but I still believe Freddie Mercury has a better vocal and a better stage performer. That’s my opinion.
Monterey Harris Yes Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin is an incredibly technical guitarist but still Brian May is one of the greatest guitarist in the world it’s just when he plays guitar solo’s he has so much feeling that man is speaking poetry with his music

I was there and the music wrapped around you, hugged you, and went through you. I cried then and I still tear up listening to it today.

Wow. I was still a kid but I knew the concert was a huge deal on account of my older brother. We only watched it on TV. I wished I was there though after watching it. What incredible electricity it was. All the great pop stars were there. Biggest concert ever
Me too. The day remains the greatest show I had the privilege to attend. Queen indeed were the pinnacle. The fact there was such a breadth of acts in a day. Such talent. Not sure we can ever repeat this.
I remember seeing this live on TV and even that was a freaking incredibly powerful experience. I can only imagine actually being there! 🥰
Btw, there were 70,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London watching Live Aid. About 1.5 BILLION people watched it televised, including me, like I said.

The amazing thing about this concert is it was not a Queen concert, there were aroud 50 big name acts appearing in this concert for \live Aid.... yet the main one is this one! It stole the show!

A few interesting facts about the quiet member of Queen John Deacon. He joined Queen in 1971 for his musical and electronic skills (fun fact he created the Deacy Amp from parts out of a skip which Brian May used to create guitar orchestras throughout Queen career).
He wrote several f Queens hits including Your my best friend, Another One Bites The Dust, Back Chat And I want to break free.
He was And is still involved with the bands financial management even though he retired from the band and the music industry in 1997. According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2019 John Deacon is worth £ 130 million.
Personal life, he married his wife in 1975 so they have now been married for 44 years and they have 6 children. Final interesting fact is that one of the reasons Queen split from their original management company is that it refused to lend John Deacon money to put up a deposit on a house.
Just thought John retired in 1997 is worth £130 million and has 6 children I think I could definitely use his financial skills in sorting out my finances.
John was an integral member of Queen as Freddie himself stated ‘We are a Band of 4 equal musicians I’m just the lead singer not the leader of the band.

I remember watching this on TV when I was about 12 and even then I knew I was watching something very special. My eyes were glued to them and I'm pretty sure that my mouth was hitting the floor the whole set. It was and still is the greatest performance I've ever seen. It affected me so much that I can't even imagine what it would have been like to be there in person. Just genius, and Freddie Mercury was and still is the greatest frontman in music history.

I was stuck in the middle of the crowd at Live Aid but could hear everything and just about see the screens , Princess Diana was there and she was radiating pure excitement and happiness as everyone who was there felt on fire except for Prince Charles !!! For such an enormous crowd there was no trouble or pushing ....I am 70yrs old now and have been so lucky to have been young in the late sixties and the 1970s plus I still have all my Concert programmes and tickets . " Those were the Days of our Lives " as Freddie wrote. ..l didn't like Queens (Fat Bottomed Girls ) because I was really slim . Great to see young people listening to this era's music & my lucky son will get all my LPs etc when I've gone .😱😱

To me this is the greatest performance in music history. The way he held that crowd in the palms of his hands is just amazing. He was the ultimate showman and Queen just music perfection.
And Phil Collins, of Genesis fame, played both shows, first at Wembley, then at JFK, after taking a Concorde between the two cities.
Genesis did a great performance that day too!
This used to be my dad's favorite thing to watch with me. Live Aid. He passed away ten years ago in a car wreck at 44, but I still watch it on his birthday. His favorite was always Queen at liveaid. They changed the world of concerts. Loved your reactions to queen, they were similar to my first ones too.

I went on a school trip to France that day (from UK), so there was a bus full of hyped-up fifteen year olds singing along and having an absolute blast listening to LiveAid all the way home after a day in France. Kudos to the driver for putting the radio on full blast.
I was a spec in that crowd, just after this performance David Bowie had to perform. I felt sorry for him.
John Deacon played bass guitar. In the Bohemian Rhapsody video, he was behind Freddie at the piano, and John had long hair.

With all of the legendary bands there performing Queen totally walked away owning the entire thing. ❤️ There were watch parties everywhere that day and into the night. It was exciting to be watching something so historic. I was 14 and our block had an outdoor watch party and it was huge with lots of alcohol and when Queen came on the world stopped. Everyone just stood watching how amazing this performance was and we would never forget it for as long as we lived. Everybody knew those songs by heart thanks to MTV back when it was actually about music and not pregnant teenagers and other trashy tv shows.
Freddie wasn’t just a singer, he wasn’t just a performer of music. Freddie WAS the music.
I was curled up into a ball crying my eyes out as soon as I saw Brian's hair...I just wish I was there to experience their performance live
