Any evening spent listening to Steely Dan in a grubby garage chain smoking cigarettes, swilling canned beer and playing cards will be one of the best nights of your life. Complex music is oddly such a simple pleasure.
Steely Dan has many more gems waiting for you to hear. Their music is complex, layered, dimensional, unpredictable, witty, diverse, and unfailingly musical.....
You know guys, I've been watching your reactions for a long time now because you absolutely 'get' the music and what it does to you both, is exactly the same as it does to me too. You always know what you're gonna get from a Steely Dan track. Pure musical genius songwriting and performing. They always offer the perfect combination of jazz and rock and they do it like no other band. Sadly, Walter Becker died a few years ago and he was one of the geniuses behind the songwriting and performing, but the likes of Donald Fagan and others have kept the band's incredible musical legacy alive. There's no other band like Steely Dan.
I recommend just for pure fun Green Earrings; The Fez and Haitian Divorce off the Royal Scam album. Someone else also mentioned Night by Night off Pretzel Logic. Funky as hell. Also I'd hit Glamour Profession; Babylon Sisters and Time Out of Mind off Gaucho. Sooooo so many great SD songs
As far as Steely Dan goes, you’ve barely scratched the surface. So many great songs. Don’t Take Me Alive Peg Josie Kid Charlamagne Hey Nineteen Deacon Blues Dirty Work Ricki Don’t Lose That Number
This song made me say, “What the fuck is THAT?” the first time I heard it on the radio. I had to pull the car off the road into a parking lot to finish listening to it. It still sounds amazing almost 50 years later.
Steely Dan is responsible for some of the most intelligent music ever recorded! Their Rock Fusion incorporates many genres allowing them to reshape their sound. They've collaborated with the best session musicians of their time.
Night by Night kicks ass. Great song. Honestly although I like pretty all their hits, I often prefer other album cuts. Black Friday, Royal Scam, King of the World.....and many others.
Jazz Rock fusion sometimes with a little blues, a little Latin flair with the best musicians in the world. Lyrics you'll never hear duplicated any where else. Get into the lyrics. They paint of vivid picture, often telling historical stories, like Kid Charlemagne and the Royal Scam. Steely Dan is it's own genre. They're outside the box. Often said to be your favorite band's favorite band.
As you've just learned Steely Dan's sound is a fusion of rock, jazz, blues and R&B to create their distinctive sound. This song incorporates the unique sound of an electric sitar and even has a sitar solo with a melodic and eerie sound giving it a memorial vibe.
Great reaction, guys! Steely Dan have so many songs..."Peg"..."Bodhisattva"..."Black Cow"..."Black Friday"..."Night By Night"..."Deacon Blue"..."Dirty Work"..."My Old School"..."Don't Take Me Alive"..."Green Earrings"..."FM"..."Babylon Sisters"..."Slang of Ages"..."Almost Gothic"..."Blues Beach"...too many more...
This sing here is from Steely Dan's very first record, from 1972. It's perhaps the most 'Rock' influenced work of their, w/ every next record, they start to insert more and more Jazz elements into their Pop-Rock mixture.
This song is not simply 50 years old... it was also on their first album. This is one of these rare tracks that could easily have been a 15 to 20 minute jam session. But back then record companies wanted "radio friendly" 2 to 4 minutes songs. I owned this album on vinyl and I bought it when it first came out. It's a masterpiece of the highest calibre.
And that’s not even the tip of the iceberg! It’s more like spotting the iceberg from a couple miles out. You all are going to LOVE going down the Steely Dan rabbit hole and I am so here for it! ❤️
For more cool vibe cool guitar Steely Dan songs, I'd recommend: "Peg", "Reeling in the Years", "Josie", "Peg", "Bodhisattva", "My Old School", and "Kid Charlemagne". They have many more great songs, but I think these will give you the best guitar riffs.
I remember trying to get the Bodhisattva worked into the lyrics when I was singing this one. It's a tongue twister until you have heard it enough times. Fantastic song! There's not a bad song by Steely Dan.
@@KawaTony1964 I think I would be shocked to find one I haven't heard, but you've got all the time in the world to listen cause it's not going anywhere. Peace!
Love this song and reaction. Steely Dan's music is unique in it takes you wherever you want to go based on which instruments you follow. Patiko chilling, listening to one area, while beside him, focusing on another instrument, jamming out!
As one who thoroughly enjoyed this music when it was released, it is particularly satisfying to see it discovered and appreciated by another generation of music lovers.
Steely Dan played a jazz fusion sound with elements of funk, psych, rock, even afrobeat beats thrown in. You never knew what you would get as far as sound or where they could go. I could chill on them for hours. That said, their music is not for those expecting a certain sound. I am glad you gave them a chance.
I'm not sure how many people realize the incredible studio musicians that Becker and Fagen tapped into during the 70's when they were in their heyday. Do the research on these musicians that worked with Steely Dan in the studio. There are bio's where some of these musicians are interviewed and talk about just how much work and rehearsal went into putting the albums together. The proof of the results are in the final product. Absolute bliss. A feast for the senses. And I'm a Queen nut. High praise for Steely Dan indeed. I'm not comparing the 2 musically, I'm suggesting that both bands strove for perfection in the studio. Cheers.
And this is their FIRST HIT... Many more to come... Nice analogy to Low Spark... Probably my favorite Steely Dan song too and I know the whole catalog...
" You'll be on your knees tomorrow..." an anthem for the looser in all of us as we return yet again to the scene of the crime...where the victim and the perpetrator were one and the same...ourselves
It’s great you guys are getting this stuff. Anybody else can say what they want about America, and there’s a lot to say, we’re bad, this way and that way. But the music America has created is fucking untouchable. Unless you come from England. Ha ha! They don’t play fair and I don’t want to talk about it. This is about America Dammit!
This song is an American classic -- it is perfection in every way a rock song can be. Their way of describing American life and all it's complexities is genius. Love how you love their style--- you get it!! Here's my suggestion for more Steely Dan songs : "Any World" and "Midnight Cruiser".... they're both a punch in the gut ..but in a good way. ...😅...🥹
People are naming some really great songs. I definitely think you could deep-dive into all of their records. There are so many great songs! Unbelievable musicians
Hey George & Patrick- Good luck with figuring out SD 🤣. One of my favorite things about them is all their songs have their own vibe. No repetition in this band! Hey Nineteen is my JAM - pay attention to LYRICS!! 🔥😉
It's funny that after 50 years of loving SD, I'm only now beginning to understand their lyrics. Having them available, and listening to higher quality audio, and maybe more importantly, reading the comments of knowledgeable subscribers, I've been blown away on another level. Who knew? :-)
The reason that each song sounds different is that the players are interchangeable. With the exception of a couple of musicians, Skunk Baxter is one example, because they used a multitude of studio musicians, each song had a different vibe.
This is a hit song off their oldest album when there were still 5 or 6 guys in the band. By their fourth album there were only 2 left, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, but the albums just kept getting better. Check out “The Royal Scam” album. It is fantastic.
STEELY DAN are gunslingers. High level musicians, some of whom are studio players who just got together to write and play their own stuff. The rest speaks for itself.
Steely Dan has so many great tunes, but Reelin' in the Years, Bodhisattva, Showbiz Kids, My Old School and Dirty Work are probably my favorites. Some great guitar work on Reelin' in the Years and My Old School. Oh, and I should have also mentioned Black Friday. There's just so many great ones it's hard to choose.
First song off their first album.perfect introduction to deeper understanding. But try to realize that this is supposed to blow your mind. Every sound is perfectly placed. Every word is perfectly chosen.
"Reeling In The Years", "Black Cow", "Deacon Blues", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Peg", etc..
They're not in a category. They are a category.
"Any Major DUDE Will Tell You"....!
Absolutely!
Becker and Fagan are the masters of the everlasting groove. Play them all, you won't be disappointed.
That electric sitar is perfect. Perfect band. Perfect song.
"When you love a lil wild one, but she brings you only trouble" c'mon. How many of us guys went through this😂
Lmao frrr
"Kid Charlemagne" will blow your minds.
That whole album is killer.

Is there gas in the car? YES, there's gas in the car.
You'll never believe where Steely Dan got their name...
"Gaucho" and "Hey Nineteen"
Ahhhhhhh the 70’s....it don’t get better! 😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Steely Dan's production is beyond everyone else. If you haven't already, listen to their song "Rikki Don't Lose That Number".
Good choice. Shows some of Steely Dans scope. George & Patrick should love "Reelin' in the Years" too.
Right up there with Pink Floyd and Alan Parsons
Steeley Dan does not have a bad song.
100% "all killer no filler", to quote an album title
Welcome to the world of superior musicianship, melody and harmony.

This song is a whole-ass wibe. 😜
Love how they say "wibe" for vibe. Russian thing, very genuine.
Great reaction guys! Once you open the Steely Dan box, you can never go back. Enjoy the rest of their catalog now.
One of the top bands EVER!
Steely Dan has such a great catalog. Reeling in the Years, Ricki Don’t Lose that Number, Hey Nineteen. The magic continues!

The guitar opening can still make the hair stand up on the back of my arms !
It only gets better guys... one of the very best bands of all time...
In the 70s and 80s people used to test their stereos to steely Dan. Production is at another level. EVERY song is like this, at this level!
"FM" which was from a 1978 film of the same name
Some of the greatest musicians to ever walk the planet have played on SD albums.
Ooh, I know you're gonna love this.... gonna watch now!! recommend "Peg" and "Hey Nineteen" for more Steely Dan reactions!!! Rock on guys!! ;)

Reelin' in the Years. Fantastic Steely tune.
Steely Dan - “Night by Night”. Their funkiest track with the meanest guitar solo on any Dan record.
I love that song! Definitely one of their funkiest.
