Ha! He admits they've got nothing in common, can't talk or even dance together. But getting high fixes all that. Tonight, at least, is a wonderful thing...
Jovaughn, although the music is flawless (in the usual Steely Dan fashion) it has a deeper meaning, It's about an older guy having a date with a girl "nineteen" and they have nothing really in common. She doesn't know his music, he cannot talk to her about anything or dance with her. But what a groove this song is. Thanks for this.
Every time I hear this band, they end up stuck in my head for weeks. I wake up with random lyrics rolling around in there. Edit: please listen to FM by Steely Dan sometime.
"A bunch of interchangeable studio musicians" Jeez. Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Chuck Rainey, Larry Carlton, Elliot Randall, Michael McDonald, Abe Laboriel, Al DiMeola, Billy Cobham, Jeff Porcaro, Wayne Shorter, etc. These are the best musicians in the world. Each put their own stamp on the songs they played on.
That instrument near the end is a melodica. This song is from 1980 and yet it sounds like it came out this year. All of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen’s solo albums have that clean sound. You can hear every instrument and there's space. Top-notch production.
Leo Gallagher To me it sounded like a melodica that Donald Fagen plays live during the songs Aja and Time Out of Mind for example. Since it’s not I stand corrected. Thanks.
@@MichaelTrogdon1990 Right there with you. I always assumed it was a melodica for the reasons you stated. I've played both and, in the right hands, it's possible to make one sound like the other. I guess I'm hanging my hat on the liner notes as cited in Wikipedia. It's always possible they got it wrong. While we're sorta on the subject, why is it that on most videos I've seen, you can rarely hear Fagen's keytar. I always assumed it was either mixing error or Donald wanted it that way so he could give full attention to his vocals. Best. Leo.
Hey Steely Dan is not a band per se..Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are Steely Dan.. each song on Gaucho has different paid session musicians.what you are hearing is hours and hours studio time to get it right. Which not the case today.
I was 19 years old the year this song dropped..... wow...to be young and full of promise right now..... good luck to you J You really must hear Steely Dan .. "FM (No static at all)"
“Reeling in the Years,” hit the radio in 1973. (My senior year in high school.) It’s the song that started our love affair with Steely Dan. IT’S GOTTA BE NEXT!!!
What!! One of my favorites!!!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it as much as I do. Been loving your videos! Bringing much joy. ❤️ Wanna a really throwback funk feeling from Steely Dan? Check out Black Cow.
Steely Dan IS INCREDIBLE. There's a reason why. The group's two founding members were INSANE, DRIVEN, PERFECTIONISTS, when it was time to hit the recording studios! They quickly earned a well deserved reputation for being absolute task masters, slave drivers and they went through MANY quality musicians, who refused to stick around for more. On the flip side, LISTEN TO THE RESULTS!
I love watching young people discover "our" music, it's almost liking hearing it for the first time but knowing what's coming. Thank you Javon for playing all this great music!!!
Jayvee you've barely touched the surface with this group. They have so many good songs. Anything of the Aja album is good. Black Cow, Aja, Deacon Blues, home at last, Josie, Babylon sisters, FM, Don't Take Me Alive, pretzel logic, my old school, green earring and reeling in the Years are a good place to start. There's a lot more including Donald Fagens solo albums The Nitefly and Kamakiriad.
the lyric "It's hard times befallen The Soul Survivors" is in reference to the Philadelphia band Soul Survivors. whose first hit :Expressway to Your Heart" made it to #3 on the US charts. a true one hit wonder. Maybe you can feature it on your one hit wonder wednesdays.
The instrument at the end was a melodica played by Donald Fagen. This song has so much air in it, you can hear every instrument crispy clear. So amazing.
Right out the gate you were blown away 😂 Steely Dan says you don't remember Aretha Franklin, "The Queen of Soul"...that's a red flag right there. Great reaction Jay 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks Jay my gorgeous, I’m discovering Steely Dan for the first time with you (I’m only 102 lol). Wasn’t really exposed to this band growing up so nice to hear something new as I get older. Beautiful production on this
That chorus tho! Man! For years I was tryjng to find this song and heard on my co workers phone while almost knocking out on a grave shift tonight...then suddenly I heard it again! I quickly listened and looked it up. Now I'm grooving with satisfaction!
they get it so tight because donald fagan and walter becker are genius and they put a lot of time and talented musicians together to achieve that tight sound.....love their sound!!!!
Growing up, all I knew about Steely Dan was it was mainly Donald Fagan and Walter Becker. Then I saw a live performance of "Do It Again" on RUclips of the band on The Midnight Special, and I thought: "Who are those guys?" Of course I recognized Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Donald Fagan, but there was a lead singer I had never seen before, a different lead guitarist, and Walter Becker just seemed to be the bass player in the background. This was an early Steely Dan lineup I didn't know about!
Thanks for reacting to this one!It has always been my favorite by them along with FM(No Static at All)! This song takes me back to my teenage years!! LOVE!!
You gotta love this guy's enthusiasm. When old rockhounds like myself pass on thru to the other side, it will be up to people like him to keep the flame burning. And I think they will. So on behalf of all us who were there when it all started, THANK YOU! LONG LIVE ROCK!!!
Love Steely Dan so much. A few of their songs I didn’t know it was them. This is one of my favorites of theirs. Great reaction... that song is so amazing. Bit of Trivia... one of the 2 guys was on Jeopardy maybe in late 90 s or early 2000s. Alex Trebek didn’t know the band lol.
Steely Dan often is coming from an ironic or sarcastic pov. So, at the end, 'the cuervo gold etc...' is not a tribute to insobriety but a commentary on shallow relationships....
It gives me shivers to hear this music from my youth, and see the face of someone experiencing the joy of it for the first time. Thank you so much for sharing your joy!
Zack Sanders and Frank Floyd did the backing vocals on Hey Nineteen. The only Gaucho track Michael McDonald did backing vocals on was “Time Out of Mind”.
Greetings! Steely Dan is my favorite band so I've been watching a lot of reactions to their songs. You sir have posted the best reaction to Hey Nineteein bar none. I have subscribed and look forward to watching more from you. Please continue on your Steely Dan venture. It is very, very hard to find a bad song by Steely Dan.
Omg - you did it! I suggested a few days ago, however unsure if it was by my request or by other SD fans! Regardless THANKS! This song automatic mood lifter just like watching you "get" why these classics are everything to so many.
I'm English, 62 years old and seem to have loved Steely Dan all my life. Favourite song Babylon Sisters (ruclips.net/video/qBdv_tqVqkw/видео.html) is so atmospheric. Try out some tunes from that famous Scottish band Average White Band too, such as Queen of my soul (ruclips.net/video/XtGv700wer0/видео.html ) . I promise it'll put a smile on your face. xx Pass it on.
I have seen many of your reaction videos, and I always enjoy seeing you discover the joys, intricacies, quality, and brilliance of the songs and artists I grew up with. I am a big Steely Dan fan, so watching your reaction to this tune was so fun. Like the proud feeling one gets when their kid learns to ride a bicycle by themselves.
It's hypnotic, pacifying and out of this World. I don't believe that the younger generation of today shun this type of music. Many don't seem to get a chance to hear it. You guys are combating that. Thanks.
When real musicians get off work......they listen to Steely Dan.
Hell, I listen while working to keep me sane lol
Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band.
Yeah, they do...
I love that!! Lol
Can confirm
"the Cuervo Gold, the fine Columbian, make tonight a wonderful thing"
Ha! He admits they've got nothing in common, can't talk or even dance together.
But getting high fixes all that. Tonight, at least, is a wonderful thing...
Been there...done that! 😁🤣👍
"Say it again..."
That describes the 80s for me...
I bought my first bottle of tequila because of this song ;)
Can’t go wrong with the Dan.
Robert Cartwright totally! 💗
Freakin aye!!!!
He's gotta listen to Peg he'll enjoy that one for sure 🤔
Jovaughn, although the music is flawless (in the usual Steely Dan fashion) it has a deeper meaning, It's about an older guy having a date with a girl "nineteen" and they have nothing really in common. Cuervo Gold before the beer came out….Steely Dan.

STEELY DAN are their own genre of music. "Jazz-Rock-R&B-Groove" music. Most of their songs make want to bob your head. You almost can't help it.
Best description of them I've heard.
Yacht rock
well said
Just remember that Steely Dan was not a band. Steely Dan was Walter Becker and Donald Fagan and a bunch of interchangeable studio musicians.

Not a melodica. It's actually a lyricon driving a synthesizer played by Donald Fagen, so says the liner notes. Best. Leo.
Leo Gallagher To me it sounded like a melodica that Donald Fagen plays live during the songs Aja and Time Out of Mind for example. Since it’s not I stand corrected. Thanks.

If you haven't already, you have to do "My Old School" by Steely Dan
Luv that one!!😃
Amen brother!
That's my favorite!
The guitar solo in My old school is awesome.
Just dive into the deep end of the ocean that is the Steely Dan catalogue. Endless talent.
"Nice!
Sure looks good!
Mmm mmm mmm!
Skate a little lower now...!"
Jay, "Deacon Blues" and "Josie" are next for you from Steely Dan. Thanks for the reactions, enjoy them!!
Peg also! The entire Aja album! 💜💜💜
Deacon Blues is my favorite!
@@sonyawasmer2344 oh hell yes!! Peg is phenomenal as is the album Aja. 😎🤟

Youth is lost on the young, ain’t that the truth!
I know you like Steely Dan’s harmonies. Remember they used the great Michael MacDonald as a session backup singer!
“Reeling in the Years,” hit the radio in 1973. (My senior year in high school.) It’s the song that started our love affair with Steely Dan. IT’S GOTTA BE NEXT!!!
I was five but love music and the groove 💗
It doesn’t get much better than Steely Dan! Song is about a girl who is only 19 years old that he has nothing in common with. 💙💙💙
Yep. I've been in a Steely Dan trance for 30 years.
I have all of their albums and they are all great. I can’t pick a favorite.
There's never a bad time to listen to Steely Dan!!...😃💥

Love Kamakiriad: "...the tech is Balinese..." If I knew which road he drove it on, I'd be thumbing a ride just to see that hydroponic fog in the back!
Awesome pick. Josie is a great song to check out.
if you like this song, you'll love "babylon sisters" from the same album.

Check out " Kid Charlemagne " by Steely Dan . You'll dig it. Peace.

Wow- I forgot about that song.
The solo at the end does indeed sound like harmonica, but it's Fagen on a synth.
They don't have official video for their music. It just meant for us to listen and enjoy!
YES! another Steely Dan. Love it.
They keep trying to put them in that "yacht rock" category but what other "yacht rock " has their kinda funk?
Naw this is like a jazz club scene with funk 💗
Imagine being a 13 year old kid in the 70s and getting this album and a Boz Skaggs album for Christmas. It blew my musical worlds wide open.
Not one bad song from SD.
Not one!!
Most reactors skip over Caves of Altamira and I don't know why, it's such a glorious Steely dan tune. Hope you look into it!
Steely Dan.is smoother then the hair on a frog. You should know this by now Jayvee.

As a musician , I always thought this was their tightest song. Nice to see a young guy appreciate it
I like the twelve simple philosophies, posted behind you. If the world becomes too complicated, just simplify.
Michael McDonald's singin' harmony in there, too!
Zack Sanders and Frank Floyd did the backing vocals on Hey Nineteen. The only Gaucho track Michael McDonald did backing vocals on was “Time Out of Mind”.
The groove man the groove.I was dating a gal that was 21 when I was 37.I can relate to the lyrics.
Damn right it’s smooth. It’s Steely Dan.
In case no one else has mentioned this, Steely Dan was named after an "adult toy"
Appreciate your appreciation Jovaughn. 🐕
Nah, please listen to me on this!
Stay on this album for Babylon Sisters.. it’s an absolute smooth banger! One of their best!
Hi Jay, listen to Steely Dan 'Do it Again mixed with MJ ' Billie Jean ' you'll get a new prospective 👍

I had the exact same reaction about the beginning of the song the first time I heard it. That was 1980. The whole song still holds up!
