I'm a 63 yo female who is still dancing to Steely Dan... have seen them in concert, it was full of many musicians in the crowd. They are still one of my favorites. ❤
Steely Dan is a great American rock band founded in 1971. They had a lot of great hits such as "Do It Again", "Reelin' In The Years", Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Hey Nineteen", "Peg", "Josie", "Deacon Blues", "Show Biz Kids", "My Old School" etc.
Song is about, learn from your mistakes or you will go back and do it again. Cool song. I was about 20 years old when it came out. Really like watching you. 2-9-2022
Van, this is so exciting! I just noticed recently that you had never reacted to Steely Dan and I couldn’t believe it. I hope this had something to do with my suggestion. You’re gonna love this journey! The rabbit hole is deep and you will not find a bad song! “Aja” or “Deacon Blues” would be good for your next Steely Dan listen. Definitely give it the hype button! 🌺✌️
You have fallen for the steely train. This will be a long and joyful hype road. So many good songs and even their back catalog is full of wonderfulness.
Ohh dam 41 yrs married my gosh We loved this album... Many wonderful evenings a bottle.of nice wine....just awesome ohh wait till you check out Aja Cheers
If this doesn't deserve hitting the hype button, nothing does. A 50 year old song that has such perfect smooth grooves will stay fresh another 50 years.
One of the most technically proficient bands in history. Not just with the actual playing of the instruments, but in the sound design and recording as well. Plus, they simply have cool tunes. Something you can't really replicate.
Steely Dan is a GREAT BAND...GREAT BODY OF MUSIC....these cats can play....hit thay HYPE BUTTON AND KEEP IT NEAR WHENEVER YOU PLAY SOMETHING FROM THEM....
I was born the year this came out and by the time i could walk n talk my mom says I would cruise around the house singin this at 2 years old. From the time i heard this with baby ears on it grabbed my ear and still hasn't let go. I swear the best test to see if a song is good is to play it front of a young baby that hasn't had any experiences. When they naturally start groovin and movin you know you got a hit song on your hands.
Steely Dan are more than a Band. They are musical genuises. Check out "FM" and "Black Cow",and "Peg" where Michael McDonald sings backup. Michael also played keyboard for them for some years.
Omg, Van! I started hearing Steely Dan in the 70s and Sade in the 80s and had NEVER made that connection. IMMEDIATELY after you said that, "Smooth Operator" popped in my head! You're right! Love your channel! 👍❤
This song has always been one of my favorites from Steely Dan. That guitar lead was incredible. As soon as you showed that hype button I was hitting it on my screen lol. Please continue with his music.....all of it. Thanks for this one. Excellent reaction.
So damned old, but still so damned good! Steely Dan is in a genre unto itself. Rock, jazz, funk, reggae. They have such a sophisticated sound. Talent and spice - every song. I literally cannot recommend any bad song by this band. Period.
I'm not motivated enough to do the research, but when I saw Van reacting to this song with a beautiful mile-wide smile, it occurred to me that we aren't blessed with that countenance very often. At the very least, not often enough. That smile made my day!!.
Steely Dan are more than a "rabbit hole" - they are a mine shaft, with multiple side tunnels. Once you're in, you'll never want to get out....rock, jazz, funk, prog, blues, fusion...you'll never know what's coming, but it will be GOOD. Lots of good suggestions below, but here are a few more: "Kid Charlemagne", "The Royal Scam", "Green Earrings", "Dr. Wu", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Aja", Pretzel Logic", "Midnight Cruiser", and MANY more. Never a dull moment.
Got my drivers license here in New Zealand in 1973, Steely Dan, Eagles, America, Journey, Bee Gees, Beach Boys etc, on my cassette player. The greatest driving music ever, cruising through our majestic country playing loud, best times ever.
Hype button for sure. If you keep reacting to Steely Dan you're going to wear out your button. Steely Dan is on a level of their own. There's a saying, "Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band".
Hype to the max, love the Dan. When you play more songs, you'll notice that they have been sampled by a lot of rap artists who love their cool and funky grooves. It only gets better, this was their first album
I consider myself a very fortunate person as I got to see Steely Dan twice. I know, a lot have seen them many more times, but I got to see them in 74 or 75 and then again in 2000 for their return to the limelight. All their music is perfection, nothing less.
HIT THAT HYPE BUTTON 🔥Yes!! Now you see why they are my FAVORITE music 💖 And yes, I know Sade; my fave is "Nothing Can Come Between Us"; she is smooth as hell. HAVE to go down the Steely Dan Rabbit Hole; they have a lot of variety in their songs to the extent that some songs are more jazz-infused, some are slower tempo, ALL are great. I recommend "Caves of Altamira" or "Babylon Sister" for the slower pace, and "Rikki Don't Lose that Number" or "AJA" for the Jazz twist. They were heavily influenced by Jazz-the GREAT Mr. Horace Silver from Cape Verde, Africa especially.
🔥SADE has been my FAV of FAV of FAVORITE female singers forEVVVVER!!!❣️ 40 years and counting….🥰 Hopefully you’ll react to her song “PARADISE” live someday.

I agree this could very well be on a Sade album. Smooth intro into Jazz from a rock and roll fan. I got hooked in the 70's.
Love me some Steely Dan!
HYPE! Steely Dan, a little smoke and enjoy the vibe! This never gets old #SteelyDan #LFRFamily
