Why are we assuming the 11th-hour demand from his agents for more $$ and/or more authority was fully sincere? This sequence of events, when viewed in context of Shanahan not extending Dubas last summer, making him a quasi-lame-duck GM, smells like Dubas not wanting to be the one to say "no", and only wanting to come back if he didn't have to answer to Shanahan. So you do the Monday presser where you play the "golly gee I don't know, I'll have to talk it over" angle, then you do the last-minute "OK I'm in, but I need X and Y" knowing you'll never get it. When the team says no & pulls the plug, then you can say you wanted to stay but the team's being unreasonable. Seems like a very passive-aggressive agent-like strategy.
To be fair to Dubas, I wouldn't want to come back either if I was told last summer I'm not getting an extension, I'm essentially GMing for my job this past season, the team finally wins a playoff round, and you're still told it isn't good enough. If I'm Dubas, I'd be thinking nothing short of winning the Cup would've ever been enough, and this whole "let's play it out and see what happens" act was a heads-I-win-tails-you-lose deal. So I'm not going to be the scapegoat by being unceremoniously fired - I'll make you out to be the unreasonable party here.

The Leafs simply cannot win with their second line. I am sorry but people who think Nylander was the solution here are nuts. What good are four goals if you end up -4 at the end of the playoffs? Your line should be scoring more than the opponent. 4 goals for and 8 against? Marner led forwards in goal differential (he’s a beast defensively) and points and had 3 goals but we keep hearing how “good” Nylander was. Total nonsense 😡.

That was actually Shanahan's theory. And for the most part, it worked, but you really need grit for the playoffs. Matthews and Marner were not the kind to throw hits or rough it up in front of the net, like Matthew Tkachuk is (and holy crap, look at him now). To Dubas' credit, he started making the right changes near the trade deadline, acquiring O'Reilly, Acciari, Schenn and bringing up Knies, but these were not the center of the organization.
A Matthew Tkachuk type was what should have been the central offensive core around which to build the team. Not an Auston Matthews type. Edmonton made the same mistake, although less so (Draisaitl can actually throw hits).

Now, he buggers up the firing of Dubas and has no plan going forward. Shanny-plan is dead in the water.

Shanny allowed the contracts to Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares to go out without either modifying either $ amount or terms given to these players, particularly term for Matthews and Marner. Dubas was a relatively inexperienced GM at the time and put out these contracts which have severely constrained the team in what they could do in subsequent seasons to build a playoff ready team. Dubax could have benefited from Shannie's alleged experience. Shanahan wax either incompetant or derelict in his duties. SHANNY, MAN UP AND FIRE YOURSELF!!!!!!!

Auston Matthews likely won't resign with the Leafs. Sources close to the Calder, Hart, & Rocket Richard trophy winner, and first player to record four goals in his first NHL game confirm. He has no attachment to any former Leafs greats ie: Keon, Sittler, Vaive, Clark, Gilmour, Sundin. Its baffling to him how he wasn't named captain of this team. What else does he need to do? While he publicly says all the right things, he's pissed.
He'll make his millions anywhere he goes
He's an Arizona, southern California guy. In late November, December, January, February, March he wants to wear shorts, and flip flops and head to practice, sources confirm.

Here's my take on the leafs. I've been saying for five years that this core, while being talented, don't have what it takes to win the cup. Their to soft to spoiled. It's going to take 3-5 years to cleanup this mess, 5 years on the bottom to rebuild, another 3 years to build a winner. Yup that's right leaf fans another 11-13 years before any chance of a win. A lot of us will never see a leaf Stanley cup in our lifetime!

Word is the "shanaplan" has already assured his "core four" that they are safe. No movement incoming. Got rid of the wrong dude, and I love it. I absolutely love every second of this team failing, and its trash fanbase whining like babies. I look forward to much more of it.

Nick is right, everything thats has happened has been on Shanahans watch, but here is the rub, it is rumoured (because we dont really know for sure) that Shanahan has told the core 4 they are not going anywhere. What incoming GM wants to take a job where before he even gets here he is being undermined?..its a stupid move by Shanahan, and that should be enough for ownership to say "enough of this crap,Shanahan goes as well", its getting just too stupid in leafland.

Shanny has corrected his own mistake....he controlled the Narrative 110% and history will now show that he both hired and fired Kyle Dubas. Dubas was FIRED into the Sun for underachieving and for potentially kneecapping the Leafs for 5-6 years.Shanny can now use the Oilers model and appeal to his core players to STOP SAYING CORE-4 because a core is 3 players no more....and without a Neon Leon deal of the CENTURY followed up by a RNH deal of the Decade the Oilers would not be trending upward so quickly. Sacrifices have to be made to bring in middle-career Matured Players with min 4 Prime years left who have already made Bank and now want to win. Guys like Taylor Hall.

The divorce is all about the money , not the Dubas contracr , but the amount of money that Rogers has lost over the past 7+ years . If the Leafs advance further in the playoffs that a very lucrative return . Remember Rogers paid 5.2 B for the rights and from what has been reported the ROI has not been good . I think the ownership got tired hearing Dubas state the he believs in the CORE 4 , Just check their stats , they let him down big time .

Shanahan made the right decision. As hard as this is to say. Mathews will attract immediate talent and high draft picks while also returning 13 to 15 million every year going forward. $15 million a year is 3 more T J Brodies in the line up. Goaltending and defense win Stanley Cups. Wrist shots from the blue Line do not.

Owners of the Leafs are the media and they wanted results from the team after many years. Some fans are apparently fine with no accountability from management after really failing to take a top 4-5 team into the final four. They really got no results from that Tavares (cap crushing) signing and I was starting to wonder if it came with a no first round clause until he scored in OT.
