The clown thought that he was worth a big bag money, just cause he went toe-to-toe with some Lightning fans heckling him 😂
He did a pretty good job. After 20 years Leafs break the first round wall. Most wins in regular season. Not sure what he asked but a pay bump isn't out of line.
What’s up with these players and GMs wanting raises without any championships or big wins to justify it??? I thought it’s supposed to be the other way around.
Dubas paid no dues. Shanny took him on, hired the best GM and coach to learn from then handed him the reigns. What did Dubas do? Ignored the obvious need for a 1st pairing D and went into FA and overpaid for a second line center. All this when Kadri was half the price and much more hard nosed.
Those days are LONG gone in all team sports.
There’s 32 teams winning championships is not the barometer for raises.
His teams had a lot of regular season success.
Dubas took a mediocre underachieving team and after a few years is leaving behind a mediocre underachieving team, what an accomplishment.
@@chrisdranfield3828 Regular season is just practice for the playoffs.
WHAT ABOUT SLIMEY SHANAHAN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?HE SHOULD BE FIRED!!!!!!!
Dubas handling of the big three contracts is very telling. He got swindled with rate and term.
The aav isn't an issue (barring Marner) it's the term that's a problem.
Nobody swindled him. He swindled himself.
Loving Stellick's point of view. Always intelligent, plus as a former GM he's got inside knowledge about how GM's are hired and subsequently fires. Kyper is just epic as always! He hit it dead on. Dubas was obviously looking for a significant pay raise (9 years with 1 Calder Cup don't cut it boss. Period.
Dubas: Ok I got hosed in other contracts a few years ago. I know how to play hardball...
Shanahan has entered the chat.
shouldve hidden in sweden until he broke
Shanahan needs to go as well.
100%
Dubas was expecting a significant pay raise!
Landis Grant right! More money to be rewarded for losing 5 out of 6 playoff series with his signature stamp on the Leafs…let’s give half the dough to 4 forwards - and in most elimination games those big buck boys couldn’t score but one or 2 goals as a team!! Kyle really ?? Asking for much more money?! Amateur hour, clown show Dubas! 😂
@@PopShoppekid stop the assumptions 🤡🤡🤡
@@allentam5754 we were not privy to the asking price of Dubas were we? Just the reaction of good old Shanahan. But one can only assume 😝🤡
@@PopShoppekid Nick Kypreos said Dubas is earning $2 M per season.
@@Landis_Grant The contract that was offered to him was for $4M per year. Dubas wanted $6-$7M per year, five years and full autonomy to make deals. That ask would have been reasonable and likely approved if the Leafs had more post season success. Dubas wasn't in a position with leverage and massively overplayed his hand and now finds himself without a job.
Being team GM for 5 years and the team winning only one series in 5 years tends to get you fired .Leafs have the talent but no chemistry to win.
@@billalexander5284 as is the city...
Brilliant Move by Shanahan. He got rid of Dubas without Him getting rid of Dubas. Moreover, Shanny got Dubas to first say He wasn't going anywhere, to, then get rid of Him. Kudos for Brendan Shanahan (even the fact I like Dubas). Now, if He (Dubas) goes Somewhere Else (Pittsburgh), No Matter What, Dubas Is Viewed As The Bad Guy. Shanny knows How To Do Things (Similar with Lamarillo and The Leafs). I'm not saying that Shanny is Dubious (No Pun Intended - similar to His Name, Dubas), but, He Knows How To Do Things.
Dubas is damaged goods now.
@@BobsUruncle-dl7cs Probably. If He's Considering Immediate Offers, It's Especially The Case.
... That's what you call being a rat.
I don't feel bad for Dubas for being out of work. I feel bad when everyday hard working 9-5 middle class people get laid off, but im pretty sure this guy has a few million in the bank. He didn't have to pay his dues to get the job, so he got a bit arrogant.
A bit arrogant? I can and I will. Turns out the studs and duds turned out to be duds. He can't and he didn't.

If they fired Shanahan then Leaf nation will rejoice.
As the old saying goes, Kyle screwed Kyle. He got greedy and now he's out of the job he wanted. No one to blame but himself.
And the manager who probably didn’t provide the right advice
I'm not sure what Maple leafs fans don't understand here. And before you say you are from Buffalo what do you know I would reconsider. Buffalo fans know their sports. Regular season success means absolutely nothing. Sure, the Leafs have had great regular seasons under Dubas but playoff hockey is so much different than regular season hockey. Over an 82 game, 6 month schedule it's impossible to get your opponent's best game night in and night out. This is how the Leafs were able to get away with it with their talented roster. It is totally different in the playoffs. You will get your opponents best game EVERY game and this is where skill does you little good. You need players with both skill and grit to get through. Dubas was so attached to his core 4 and tried to insulate them with gritty players and that model doesn't work in the playoffs. Even I could have done a better job than Dubas. Ask yourself, how many gritty and talented players (Mathew Tkatchuk for example) does Toronto have on their roster?? I can't think of one. It's no surprise to me Toronto was a 1st round exit 3 of the last 4 seasons.
Never mind that Dubas is gone. Why was there no blood on the ice when the Leafs were down 2 and 3 nothing to Florida? What is this teams identity? Bring in a line that can raise hell at any given moment. They don’t need to fight. Just good hitting and energy. I don’t care if they score or not. This “big four” does not bring energy into the playoffs. Toronto is not an intimidating place to play hockey. Visiting teams constantly roll over the Leafs. Lines 3 and 4 should be full of bangers and the Leafs just don’t have that.
When a person is agreeable 99% of the time, being disagreeable 1% of the time is amplified even more so.

Imagine a guy wanting more money for managing the most stressful and most micro managed and micro viewed team in the entire NHL. I feel bad for dubas, not his fault that his talented players making big bucks cant compete at the higher levels.
😂😂😂 yes it is his fault for spending half the cap on 4 players. He had no balls, so now he has no job
The Yankees win championships with highly paid players who perform as such and I would argue the heat from fans and media is far greater there in that pressure cooker but that's where people who are competitive want to be - Dubas had the job of bringing in the right mix of players and he only managed to overpay skilled guys who when forechecked end up playing on the perimeter and non danger areas in the playoffs and can't score.
Sure Nick. It really hurts to be out of work with millions in the bank. Kudos to Kyle ... he really did deserve a big pay increase for winning one round in 9 years.
Looks like those jabs shaved off 30 years from Kyper. Hard times.
Totally agree with kyper about doing it in public rather then in Brendan's office
Are people playing stupid with this? Kyle told Brendan half a year ago he wasn't going to make a decision until after the season.
Dubas created a beautiful 'corporate team' based (strictly) on analytics. Razzle dazzle plays, politically correct, erring on the side of wimpy, etc. But that kind of team is not really a playoff game. So sad that he was ditched by Shanny the corporate lap dog. I will be looking forward to seeing where team builder Dubas winds up next.
Here's the rest of the story Shanny didn't tell you.
He told Dubas to empty his office immediately and had Dubas escorted off the property, probably by cops.
You don't think Dubas is still doing work for the Leafs until June 30 do you?
Shanny then told Spezza to resign or he was being fired that day, too. Shanny didn't bother to tell you about this part though.
Then Shanny held a presser to tell everyone that he didn't bother dealing with Dubas' agent, as Shanny was required to do, but, instead, Shanny drove to Ford Performance Center to deal with Dubas directly.
Shanny then billed the Leafs for the gas money to drive to and from Ford Performance Center.
He’s 37 and a multimillionaire. I really wouldn’t be worrying about where Dubas ends up next.
Exactly, he has assets as well, I’m assuming. He’s not going to starve.
Dubas should never have been put in an NHL GM chair - That's on Shanahan... I don't see teams banging at Kyle's door based on his track record. The Leafs drafted Auston, Mitch, Willy and had pieces like Rielly in place and only saw round two this year against a TB team that outplayed them and clearly were not bringing it cause they already had not one but two Cups to admire in the last few years - This as Crag Button stated, has been an epic failure.
thank god he's gone. The leafs accomplished nothing with him. Now just get rid of keefe, and half the players.
He'll find a new job. Toronto will find a replacement. All will be well. Thanks for your service Kyle
Yeah sums it up pretty well
what service? The leafs were a laughing stock both before and after he was hired. They accomplished NOTHING with him.
Kyle will have to get used to saying over and over "Welcome to McDonald's - May I take your order please?"
Nobodies going to hire Dubas,he is a failure and a pretender.
Jim Benning to the Leafs. LOL The Leafs accomplished nothing under Dubas!
Brendan Shanahan needs to go
As a non Leafs fan I don't see how Dubas is made out to be the scapegoat here. The Shanaplan has clearly not worked. The decisions to cage into overpaying certain players did not work. Sure Dubas has some blame in perhaps how this was handled but Dubas being branded as the only scapegoat is negligent at best and vapid at worst. The board's allegiance to Shanahan is going to cost them. He has been there in that position for nearly 10 years. Shanahan Dubas Keefe and either Marner or Nylander have all got to go.
at least he gets to spend time with his family now
Mike Sullivan next head coach. Leafs get it done please. Sully knows how to win.
I have nothing to lose I'll say it. They would have brought him back but when he asked for more money after whining about his sacrifices they said F' that. It would not surprise me if he was expecting autonomy to pick the coach, (Keefe) double F' that. When Shanny down played the money he might have been thinking no autonomy, you are lucky we made an offer. The guy won a lottery and he wants more. How many offers you think he will get? zero zilch that is what he will get. Go to the beach.
Guys, think about this. I talk to my family and say, there's going to be a lot of sacrifice to win the Stanley Cup. Family says, well how much are they paying you to sacrifice your family and mental health ? Family says, that's it .... if they want you to sacrifice your family and miss time that you'll never get back, you need to ask for more. It starts with family and they want more for the sacrifice. Call it money, call it whatever you want, it was about how much $$$ is worth the family sacrifice. The agent did a crap job and Dubas should have spoken to Shanahan directly, not just an email. Something was lost in translation, and the lame agent didn't do his job. Too bad so sad ... life goes on, and both Shanahan and Dubas lose out.
Well money talks. You say you're stress and do the family card yada yada yada and then say if you give me 50% increased pay then we're good. And honestly if Dubas can deliver a Stanley Cup then Shanahan should pay him. But I think Shanahan took offense to this money play.
Shanahan needs to go too. Nothing but playoff embarrassment on his watch. The coach should be an automatic firing, not even worth discussing. When was the last time the Leafs had good goaltending? Time to clear the decks.
He's a big zero as in do nothing blah blah blah fat cat mgmt. His role can be eliminated and will be better for it.
Let's be honest here folks. Kyle Dubas took Jack Campbell in a trade and traded away various draft picks that caused detriment to the Soo. Dubas then took his NHL position as GM and also traded for him and let him go. Does anyone not the see the amateurness of this trade? Everyone acts like Dubas is a god and "new era" of GMs. He's a young armchair GM like many 25-40 year old men that uses Sportrac analytics.. That is the plain and simple truth.
Great insights
Me thinks Dubas got a little bit greasy and greedy. Likely thought he had the team over a barrel so late and so much to do.
Keefe needs to go, I woulda got rid of him before dubas
Dubas didnt really want to be around again but if you want to pay him a big raise, why the hell not. Good on Shanahan for not giving in.
Huge mistake. Shanahan has to go.

The Penguins will hire Kyle Dubas as their new GM!!
I hope so lol. He’s better than Marc Bergevin that’s for sure. Watch that happen and the Penguins win the Cup next year 😂
Dubas will never work in the nHL again.
He has the Penguins job-was likely on par with salary offered to him by Toronto. So he staged this entire week… playing family card… then coming back with an outlandish request for higher salary. It he got the salary request then he won having a high pressure job but getting paid a king’s ransom. If it got rejected and then let go-well it gives him the “right” to go get another job that he already had lined up and didn’t have to say I am choosing this other organization. Instead he had to go since Toronto fired him. Dubas is not a good general manager, but he is an excellent Machiavellian individual.
For once I agree Kypros.
Shanny is right. He has to make these tough impactful decisions. I learned today how it took him to fire a GM. it's not just wins and losses
Shanny has to go too.
I don’t know enough about their organization to comment on those issues, but seeing him during the playoffs and arguing with the fans was just really cringeworthy to watch. I felt a kind of second hand embarrassment for him and the fans. I felt that should have just walked away before that exchange occurred. It wasn’t professional at his level.
He's passionate about the game. That's how it works.
I begin to think Dubas purposely sabotaged himself. He didn’t want the job too much so he talked when his boss asked him not to.
Said he wasn’t sure if he even wanted the job.
Then, to be sure he’d get smoked, he asked for more $$$ at the same time.
Best played move of his GM career.
🤣🤣🤣
It’s possible ….
Well,no one can blame Ballard or Stavro. They've been dead for quite a long time. The Leafs once again turn into an overpaid pumpkin. Yeah, there are lots of other pumpkins;however, most of them have won some Cups.
that's not true, he won in the sault,
Dubas isn't worried 😂 he get a job right away. Kyper and Bourne towing company line throwing him under the bus.
Trust me he's gonna get tons of job offers. He and Keefe will be at a new team for more money before start of next season.
I think Marc Bergevin would be a perfect replacement for Dubas. He's got experience, and built a really good Montreal team that eliminated us in the first round. I don't like Brad Treliving, though. He'd be the same or worse to me, that's my opinion.
Dubas has a handshake deal with someone else. He wanted out of Toronto.
I imagine more than anything he wanted out and was only going to be willing to deal with that horrible franchise if he was paid more to put himself and his family through another year of hell just to get bounced again in '24.
Horrible franchise? You're delusional they are a top 5 team in the NHL. They certainly aren't the best franchise but are nowhere near the worst franchise either. To say they're horrible is pure delusion.
@@ryanj357 Save it bro. No use responding to Leafs haters.
@@ryanj357 to say anything other than that is delusional for a team that hasn't accomplished anything in the last 50, going on 60 years and is over run with the worst fans in the league. @@ryanj357 Not a horrible franchise but I'm sure his wife got hassled by idiot fans in the grocery store from time to time. They have young kids, we don't know what is going on behind closed doors, a bad year is worse when you have kids.
You want to be GM of any sports franchise it's either HELL ya or hell no. Either all in or walk away. There is no in between.
They had a deal until the Leafs flamed out in the playoffs, then things changed.
They broke the first round wall after 23 years so it's not a total flame out.
Dubas deserves it all. Small man. He didn't want GMKD to be paid more than him. Shame.
Who?
Amateur organization doing amateur things. Reilly said he couldn't believe the perks the players got. It's time to throw out the perks and make EVERY PLAYER earn it. Look at the Florida series. The coach was so badly out - couched it was farcical. Why is Keith still there? Look at Brindamour, Trotts, Bowman, etc. These great coaches are at the big show every year. WHY! It's because they are great coaches. The Big 4 players disappeared in round 2 because they weren't playing for anything but summer vacation.
Its cool the pens will take him. And win a cup with him
Writing was on the wall for this Dubas guy, Speeza leaving clear indicator there is trouble in the front office. However Player and GM there is no loyalty. Mathews will be traded before July 1st. Marner same, JT gone. Nylander is the face of the franchise. Front office will bring in older pedigree cup run experience. Shanny will revert back to a Dryden tested and true method of getting through the rounds.
I guess you know it all
Has kyper and Bourne turned into hockey Central?
Did Dubas and his agent overplay their hand? (Match this offer from Pittsburgh?)
Did the agent try to corner shanny with a counter offer, of 5 to 6 million dollars x 5 years that's the question.
He wanted out and he's gonna get whatever he wants from Pitt or Calgary
He just lost, and he wanted more money, WHAT!!!
Woo Hoo Dubas the destroyer is gone!

Angus glen has claimed another victim.
This was a failure from the start. First , who the hell hires a 28 year old with NO NHL experience as the GM of the most heavily scrutinized franchise in hockey. As for Dubas he’s an arrogant & selfish individual that put together a cute NHL team that failed miserably in his nine years in Toronto. Shanahan has to take some of the blame and as for Toronto they are in a very dicey situation and the clock is running out.
He found something: 7 x 6.
Dubas played the childish role of sheeplishly failing communicate to his employer in a timely manner, while they were both in negotations and never lead Shanahan believe thay they weren't on the same page intil his end season presser/ until the counter offer by Kyle's agent was made ! This shows the employer how much you truly want the job. Always be 100% on the same page as your employer guys, even if you're understandings deferentiate. Immature move by Kyle.

Ordinarily I'd point out that he's made plenty of money etc etc, but then I remembered he lives in Toronto so probably has yet to pay off the mortgage on his 1800 sq foot house.

Hahaha Leafs cheap out and screw up again. Love it
We all have an opinion on what is wrong or why can't the Leafs win more than they lose. At the end of the day, the Leafs are always fun to watch and they will continue to be fun to watch. Toronto is a great sports city regardless of the sport! Because it is, the media scrutinizes the sports team more than other cities. Toronto is a world-class city that wants world-class sports teams. That's fair. I always want to see Canadian sports teams do well. Especially Calgary and or Edmonton. Hockey is a great sport pretty much at all levels of play. There's always next year!
Toronto sports fans keep your chins up! The Leafs did better than most of their rivals. Winning is tough at the professional level! That's probably why fans idolize winners so much!
Now Kyle has the excuse he needs to be a free agent, which is what he and his agent wanted. His agent has probably already had informal talks at the golf course with other teams
