I'm not sure what Shanahan was supposed to say in that presser other than what he said. Unless we find out he made a lot of it up, I'm not blaming Shanahan in this case.
With talk of Dubas potentially heading to Pittsburgh, this might actually be a legitimate successor to the Phil Kessel video. Wonder if the Pens will get two cups out of this too Edit: step 1 complete
For real... took what many of us do for nothing (talk about sports) and turned it into his career "do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life" Love Steve (and friends) hopefully one day the leafs win the cup for his sake
@@FloridaMan05 To be fair, it's more the unique situation of a team that's this popular being this unsuccessful for so long. if the Leafs had won a cup in 2019, Steve wouldn't have grown this much.
Didn’t agree with a lot of his choices but I don’t doubt that he believed he was building a winner. We also saw how much he cared when Tavares took a knew to the face, when Mikheyev’s arm got cut, how intense he was when they beat Tampa. He truly cared and I don’t think that should be overlooked. Good luck in the future, Dubas. Edit-there’s a lot of people shitting their diapers in the replies.
Who cares about dudes feelings... he built a season hockey team. If he was trying for a cup dubas is complete trash as a GM. No defense and soft as baby shit doesn't win cups 😂
Amusingly, all that love from Dubas ended up with player agents walking all over him. And where is Mikheyev now? Oh yeah, made no difference what Dubas did, money talks and players walk. It's business in the millions. If a player needs a buddy, join a rec league.
Not a great gm. The guy tried some NHL be a gm shit requiring cap gymnastics with the best current goalscorer in the league, top 10 playmaker in the league, William Nylander who is a top 15 winger in the league, and Morgan Reilly, a top 10 offensive d man in the league, because of some weird delusion that because an aging Tavares who had maple leafs sheets as a kid HAD TO BE SIGNED to an astronomical deal. Imagine you never brought Johnny in? Kadri becomes who he became, so many other players stay who became great on other teams, Reilly can get a big-minute stay-at-home RHD due to the amount of cap space they have left... wow. Its been #DubasOUT for the past 6 years at least. Guy stinks. Move on.
Better not hear "players are upset" about him being fired because ALL blame falls on them. THEY let Kyle down. THEY underperformed. THEY blew it again & again.
Wow you really sound like you know what you are talking about. Would you care to share your playing successes with us so we can evaluate your credentials?
I mean Kyle Dubas was the GM. His job was to build, maintain and tweak a teams roster to eventually at least make the finals. He was GIVEN this team. He didn't build it. Marner, Nylander, Matthews, Reilly were already on the team and already developed. Why wouldn't you keep Kadri as 2nd line center rather than waste the money on Tavares? Kadri has a cup now lmao. Hyman is playing the best hockey of his life now in Edmonton. Etc. etc. Imagine the defense you could have if the money was spent on 2 middle line defensemen. Dubas did this team no favors.
This is the greatest running soap opera in hockey. Thank you Steve for covering it. As a Sabres fan, I'm here to enjoy it. Proceed Shanahan. Can't wait for the next season of episodes to drop.
This is a weird thought, but I'm kinda wondering if Dubas wasn't attempting a power play here. Everyone knows the Leafs are stuck between a rock and hard place rn. Trying to find a new GM is only going to complicate an already very complicated and time sensitive situation. With Dubas being so public about maybe not wanting to come back, I wonder if he was trying to catch the Leafs in a desperate moment by asking for the raise. Plus, Shanahan mentioning the email Dubas sent so deliberately makes me wonder what was written.
100%. He blindsided them using the media to build a narrative (the one thing kyle is actually great at) trying to get more money and who knows what else.
That is true. In 13 of 14 years in the Ovechkin era they never closed out more than 1 playoff series in a season. Winning the Stanley Cup is a certainly a process.
I think Kyle Dubas gained a lot of experience coming out of Toronto. Whatever team has him as GM next, I think they will find success. As for the Leafs, it's a bigger mystery than the last decade
Helll fucking no , he was awful form the start , he give 40m to 4x forward thinking this will win the championship and it never got close , not 1 fucking first round won except for this year but was that enough? hell fucking no , contracts are expiring and they have no money for real defense.
Shanahan is the face of an ownership group that us disfunctional at best. I am more confident in Shanny than Dubas & Keefe. I am sure that he has had a plan A,B,C prior to today’s news
Shanny should probably think about why he was so ready to keep Dubas but a short ambivalence after getting crushed in the media and a gap in contract negotiations switches it so fast. Were you really all that comfortable with keeping him?
Why not? They thought he had done a good job so they wanted to keep him, but now he made it clear that he no longer has the drive to be the GM. Wanting it is very important so that should change things.
Sounds like a wacky reality TV show. "We took a loud-mouth obsessive fan with zero experience and put him in charge of a professional men's hockey team. This is Leafs Fan Ruination."
I thought the Kessel trade was abysmal, and hindsight isn't necessarily that kind to it, but it did usher in an era of unprecedented regular season success. I only hope the sequel leads to the same outcome, because I'm very scared the 05-16 Leafs are gonna be back, and they were *tough* to watch.
The job was Dubas's then he made a counter offer on Thursday. I have no idea what he was asking for but Obviously Shanahan wasn't having it. I was really hoping Dubas would stay but I also understand why Shanahan chose to go in a different direction.
@@Loverachelle2 so he basically wanted 6-7 mil per year making him the highest paid gm? In what world does Dubas deserve to be the highest paid gm? I heard the original extension offer was between 4 and 5 mil per year. If all this is true then I don't blame Shanahan one bit for firing Dubas. Seems Dubas might have been all about the money just like the players he signed.
@@chrisg1556 Dubas proved what a spoiled, entitled child he really is with this clown show... I can sympathise with how hard being in any position on a pro team can be on family life; long hours, travelling half or more of the year, the constant threat of a sudden change of address or even country. And THEN you add in factors like a very passionate & success starved fanbase who constantly let emotions get the better of them?! But the way Dubious handled all this? Wow, just wow... 1. He should NEVER have made that presser on locker clean out day. Front of office staff can hold their pressers afterwards. Clean out day is for the players & coaches, not the GM's office. 2. While holding the presser was bad, to then turn around and say, "I want to stay but I need time to..." AFTER you've supposedly already asserted to your boss that you're committed to seeing the job through, is nuclear levels of unprofessionalism. 3. Sending in your agent with what can only at this point be seen by your bosses as a ransom demand to retain your services? I thought this guy was supposed to be intelligent?! 4. After blindsiding your bosses with your agent, you then send an email to reassure that you're really wanting to stay on as GM and see this thing through? At the very least that should have been an actual phone call. If you really are an actual professional, it should have been a phone call to say, "we need to meet and discuss this situation in person immediately - can we please make that happen ASAP?" I mean, that's how an adult would act. Instead, Dubious went and seemingly pulled the same childish antics his young superstars have pulled, and now is sitting with a surprised Pikachu face. No wonder this core come off as a bunch of unaccountable & entitled brats.
I think it is a blessing in disguise for dubas, as he is not tasked with the Herculean mission of figuring out the Marner, Matthews, Nylander conundrum. Kyle will land on his feet elswhere, despite what he said at the press conference I believe he will find another GM job before the start of next season, perhaps in a seat that is less hot than the Maple leafs'
Dubas is the guy that gave all those kids massive top of the league contracts before they had done anything and hamstrung the team's cap. You make it sound like Dubas is the victim when he created this mess.
I'm not a fan of the Maple Leafs not by a long stretch but I liked Kyle Dubas the way he was passionate about his team I can respect that about him I hope he lands on his feet.
It wasn't. It was the fault of the core. It's Dubas' fault for not making changes to the core two seasons ago, because I could tell that the core didn't have the fighting spirit to push through adversity in the playoffs. Dubas had every right to get fired, but I will never, _ever_ blame him for his moves or his attempt to make it work. What ultimately ruined him was his sunken cost fallacy toward the core.
I mean those contracts are all shit and he should’ve put his foot down. But its always someone elses fault except Mathews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares. Just like Babcock was the problem
@@TheEDFLegacy Why do you leaf fans always blame your players every single time? Kessel, Kadri, Gardner, now all these "core" players. Go ahead and watch them get traded and win stanley cups like Kessel and Kadri did on other teams lmfao. If Dubas didn't go out and buy the expensive Tavares or trade Kadri, you guys would be better off.
This is a potentially horrifically bad time to fire Dubas. This is a crossroads moment for the franchise and now they are getting a new vision with very little time to adjust and make plans for some extremely important pieces.
Same goes for when they named him GM. It was horrifically bad timing to give a child GM his on the job training right as the team had to start cementing the foundation of a Stanley Cup contender. And he screwed up royally. The Tavares signing specifically. It raised the cost of all 3 upcoming FAs. Then Dubas got in his feelings about his “core 4”, announced to the world (including player agents) that he would sign everyone, and the snowball began rolling downhill.
Dubas was on the right track and a Stanley Cup is within reach. They were so close. Problem was they hit a wall with Florida super goalie averaging 97% saves. Leafs goalie didn't do bad with 93% saves but that 4% goaltending superiority meant 4 out of 5 games Leafs lost by one friggin goal! Yes the core 4 couldn't muster much and that's a problem but rest of the Leafs team and goalie played great. What happened to Leafs is happening to Florida as their goalie is a beast. Hurricanes won't even get one game and with Vegas sweeping Stars who's goalie is averaging 94% it's clear who will win the Stanley cup. Florida will take it in 6 games. So Dubas isn't wrong. He has a winning team but needs to get a better goalie and get more production from core 4 in playoffs. A shrink should help with that.
This is a no brainer. Dubas told Shanahan that he and his agent would get in touch with him, the agent did and obviously asked for too much. Dubas didn't, he waited and sent an email to Shanahan when he was sitting down for dinner. When you have won one round in five years, blew over half the cap hit on four guys, and after telling the boss you will speak to him, YOU DON"T SEND A F'KIN EMAIL!!!!! He needed to get his ass into Shanny's office, discuss the amount, make a commitment and do it in person, we're talking millions here. An email may be good for a lot of things, but not this...sometimes old fashioned, proper, repsectful communication is needed.
I think what happened was that Dubas tried to use the media to create a sense of panic by eluding to the fact that maybe he wasn’t going to be interested in staying in hopes of using all that panic for bargaining power. Problem was that Dubas didn’t realize that from Shannys perspective it just looked like Dubas was doing just what Shanny said when he spoke to the media, which is that, Dubas wants more money while at the same time stating that he wasn’t sure he wanted to stay. So from Shannys perspective, firing Dubas would have been a no brainer. Stating it all in the media, imo, was done because Dubas had tried to use the media to gain a bargaining advantage. So now it was Shannys turn to use the media - I feel - as a sort of tit for tat.
The fact that Dubas emailed him instead of calling like he said he would. That confirmed his feeling. Saying one thing and doing another is something that could really cost some in more ways than one.
I loved what Kyle did for this team, his respect for his players, and standing by his guys. Hate to see him leave and hope for the best but this is a message to this team from the very top. If you are not 100% committed to being the team to break the curse then please GTFO!!
@@TinnieTa21 seems more hilarious to think that Dubas hadn't discussed this with his family over the course of the year (or if he had not to air that in public is odd), both stories in the media are propaganda in a way that let Shanahan fire Dubas in a way that they both save face
@@withallduerespect9733 is it really such a ridiculous thing to have these discussions when the season is over? Players speak constantly about not wanting to think about things under after the season to focus. What is even more absurd is Dubas asking for total autonomy to do the job and this being seen as a ridiculous ask.
This is Alex Anthopolous with the Blue Jays all over again. Young GM fired from an underperforming team. Will find his feet on another team and win it all.
Completely different situation. AAs team was actually a few wins from being in a WS and the ownership screwed him by bringing in the Cleveland clown show that didnt want AA to have much control of the team so he left on his own terms. Dubas just overplayed his hand and lost....
What’s crazy is that CJ might have accidentally fired Dubas. Obviously I say this mostly in cheek and tongue, but one must wonder what the leafs look like if CJ doesn’t ask that question
Dubas backstabbed Shanahan first with that press conference on Monday being emotional and bringing up his family FIRST before he even was asked about his family but it ended up being about money anyway. That is gross.
money and family are absolutely intertwined. you need money to raise a family and you need a lot of money to raise a family when you work this kind of job, from a time taken perspective and a stress perspective.
@@withallduerespect9733 I assume that's in reply to me so my answer is "I don't know". I don't have children and I'm not married, so I have no idea what it would feel like to be a parent of young children in a high stress high paying job. maybe it would make me never ever mention my family in public. maybe I would talk about them all the time. I don't know.
I’m not surprised at Shanahan. I remember when he played for the Wings in 2002 and he told a chirping Carolina fan she should shave her pits. That moment has stuck with me over the years.
Honestly, I’m glad Shanny was so transparent. As Leaf fans, we invest a lot of time, effort and money into the team. With all the ups and downs and big decisions being made this offseason, we deserve a coherent explanation. If Shanny felt Dubas wasn’t 100% into doing the job, I applaud him for making that tough decision. I can’t say it was the right one at this moment. Only time will tell. That said, I do feel like it was time for a change. Here’s to hoping it’s for the better!
well, dumb ass overplayed his hand by asking for money after excepting the deal on Thursday and then coming back to the day of the press conference that morning and ask for more money is dumb of him. I wanted him back, but if that story is true from Shanny, then it’s understandable.
But Shanahan's rationale wasn't cogent. You fire someone based on the body of their work, not based on a single day of unprofessionalism, during the period where the entire organization is still hurting from a stinging defeat. Shanahan's press conference was worse than Dubas'. Dubas was frank. Shanahan was either disingenuous or impetuous, and solely covering his own back. Neither amount to a rational explanation. Both are personal not professional.
@@Fultoncards And that body of his work only bring them one playoff series win in SEVEN years. The worst for a said "competing" team. All frustrated teams such as Sharks and Preds have several years of deep run before they blow up.... Heck even Coyotes have better run than Leafs even though they only have one run!
@@Fultoncards yeah, something about the Shanny presser just seems off. All the talk from everyone who has dealt with Dubas about how honest and straightforward he is to work with and then it’s like that’s not true. Something just seems a bit off about it all.
Why thank Kyle? He inherited most of the core and accomplished very little with it, trading away countless draft picks and prospects along the way. In 2-4 years when the consequences of his era come calling the most insane part will be all the Kyle faithful who will come out of the woodwork to blame the new guy who will have come into a far more difficult situation then just the short term signings that need to be addressed.
They were a great regular season team in spite of Dufas, not because of him. I think Shanny has been pulling the strings the whole time, and when it didn't work out, Dufas takes the fall. Let's face it, Shanny is a hockey lifer, and Dufas is just a DOOFUS!!!!
@@warrenotto27 says leaf fans every year. Every season they’re adamant that they’re winning the cup, then by game 5 they’re having a meltdown and the seasons over
My bet is the counter offer made Dubas agent was too high and Kyle was not worthy of it and Shannahan was basically insulted (which is fair) that not even Kyle would meet with him face to face to make that offer. However Steve, I disagree. This organization never talks about stuff from behind the scenes and tbh this is a good sign. They’ve never been open like this before and now Brendan put his foot down to say that we need to change and I wouldn’t be suprised if a bunch of the staff is either gone or leaves due to this move that was necessary. I have a feeling that the next management crew will be more tough when it comes to the core 4 and the new deals they will offer to them. And if it becomes a headache, then most likely bags will be packed and ships will be sailed if we can’t get things in order.
You keep telling yourself that, this is nothing but a case of a bitter Preisdent of Operations. Brendan Sheahan is a goon who only cares about ticket prices versus the Stanley cup. He got rid of Kyle Dubas for one reason. TO KEEP LOSING, He is the cancer on this team. Not the core, not the gm, him.
This decision aside, a company with this large of a fanbase should not be this open about decisions made within the front office. It will never end well.
Bottom line is Dubas overplayed his hand and lost the job. U are going on about firing Shanny because he endorsed all the decisions Dubas made, but Dubas wasn't fired because of his hockey decisions, he was fired because he tried to get more money from the leafs and the leafs said fuck off. I dont want a GM who questions his desire to be here and am happy this was done.
I don't get why the agent and Dubas never presented their new financial package when the agent started talking to Shanahan back in March or during the playoffs. Why do it after that epic fail press conference. They handled it the wrong way. Any people who want to become agents, this is a very good use case to learn from.
I assumed dubas decided it was only worth coming back if he could get paid more after the second round exit. they might not have had that feeling in march.
@@isthatrubble His agent could have sent that new counter offer after they were eliminated and advised Dubas not to speak on Monday. All I am saying is why do allow your client to make that press conference and let it simmer for a couple of days then have the audacity to then send the counter offer. The agent here didn't stop his client from himself. For me I think doing that well is the hardest job of an agent than negotiating contracts on their behalf.
@@HassanElmi yeah if I were the agent I probably would have advised him to wait too. considering shanny also wanted him to wait it's definitely a weird choice.

I can't help but feel the classic flavor of dread that the Leafs serve up with this dismissal of Dubas. I feel like this decision will ripple for years. For a franchise who has been rudderless for decades, at least Kyle brought a direction and stability. The team, year over year, improved under Kyle. Sure, they didn't break through in the post season, but at least give the guy SIGNIFICANT time to adapt, change, and learn. Instead, we're essentially hitting reset, destroying stability, and going back into chaos.

The organization in general is way better off than they were in 2013, not even close. That's why he got to fire Dubas. Also, Steve you got to read a bit better if you thought the initial announcement was anything but the Leafs choosing not to extend Dubas and nothing but that.

Dubas thought he was negotiating from a stronger position after getting past the first round. Shanahan obviously felt differently. I feel like time will show us that Shanahan messed up on this one.
Lmao dubas was asking for money to end up being the highest paid gm.. in what world does he deserve that LMAO.. he’s done nothing but over pay players which got us stuck in this situation! You can’t pay 4 players over 40m and think your going to have a good balanced team! He hasn’t improved the defence or goaltending in how many years?!!
What time will show you is that Kyle was adequate at best in his time here. He was learning on the job. The contracts, traded draft picks, coaching and signings choices from the ol' well of junior success, poor drafting (Lily pad is his best so far) and lack of success through those bad contract years is only going to show it's true ugliness in a couple years time. But hey, the wonder boy fan club will at least have a new face to blame, and wonder boy himself will land somewhere new, lessons in hand, and maybe find success. ...if he's learnt the lesson on being so damn hard headed... seriously, do we think everyone around him was like "Yes Kyle! Matt Murry is a brilliant idea!" 😆
this is gonna be a decision we regret, now or sometime in the future it's gonna bite us in the ass like these things always seem too(and Dubas was an actual good gm)
He may become a 'great GM' somewhere else, sometime down the road. Won't change how badly this opportunity was wasted. ... this era that he wasted was paid for by a decade of tanking/not making the playoffs. The core assembled was a complete disaster, every one of the contracts except maybe Nylander and that was a s-show of a process to get.
Did you watch the video? Team performance was not why he was released it was the comments made during his presser and his negotiations afterwards. But yea, Toronto so bad right? As if no other teams release gms after a failed season. Braindead.
Truth is Kyle Dubas probably tried a last minute power move in that press conference to try to grab a bit more cash out of his next deal. How can you go from saying that your family is hurting from your job and that you're not so sure about your future publicly, to then go, 48h later, send a new deal to Shanahan in which your financial demands are higher? Dubas betrayed Shanahan's trust with that presser and I think he made the right move by changing his mind on who should have the GM position of this organization. I'm sure when or if we get to hear Dubas's side of the story, we might be able to also blame Shanahan on some things, but based on what we know, I think he made the right call. Also, about your point on Shanahan airing all the dirty laundry on Dubas in front of the press, didn't Dubas open that door though by going to the press about his issues in the 1st place?
It had to be this way, but I agree. There is going to be some other facts to come out, which provides a fuller picture. But I think this was the only correct solution.
well at the same time, there could be another side of the story.. where there was a disconnect between Duba's agent and Dubas. Dubas was okay with staying as GM but Dubas agent trying to get more and played the wrong hand.
@@Fred-xv5sx No that isn't how it works. everything an agent does reflects the demands of the client. the agent would never pull such a manoeuvre without Dubas's consent.
Problem is those same guys see the complete dumpster fire of a fan base and media and the only ones we’re going to get are the ones who need a pay check. Like the front officer version of the leafs 20 years ago that got all of the elite talent come our way 2-3 years after they were last useful. We were the retirement tour destination for aging stars for years. Why would any GM candidate with half a brain want to be within 10’ of this town and its fans? Spend some time in comment board. People weren’t just calling for his figurative head. There were fans wishing actual harm on the guy. There are only a handful of franchises where he would have to deal with that level of BS. He can easily go to any number of franchises where no one would even care to know his name, and here he was likely afraid to walk around in public. That’s a real thing. You want to know why he meant when he talked about his family? Imagine being them and reading all of the filth written about him. Imagine worrying about his health and safety because of how feral and rabid some our fans are. I think there was actual truth to that point and not just a negotiation tactic.
@danielbaldwin2390 while I don't disagree with you. I still think the history and the challenge can bring someone with pride and passion. Or we will get an amazing urinating tree video. 😅🤣
If we take anything from Marner’s last signing, then I predict Willy is gone unless we trade Marner.. Marner waited it out and performed great after Tavares got 11M and instead of signing for less than 8M he got over 10M. Willy outperformed Matthews this year if you consider playoffs in the mix, so Willy will easily want 10M+ and maybe closer to 12M if Auston is the priority and signs for 13M. These previous contracts are hurting us bad.. we can’t afford Matthews, Marner and Nylander making the money they’ll want. And the fact is, as Shanahan said, these big decisions may not come until mid year or trade deadline because of the new GM hunt. I’m sad to say bye to Dubas, I think he was the right guy going forward but we are in a BAD spot now tbh. No core 4 trade we make will make this team truly better, because our core 4 are all on superstar contracts, they don’t perform in playoffs, and wherever they go they’re basically rentals, because they’ll all leave for the most money elsewhere when their contracts expire. So no team is giving us real value for Matthews, Marner or Nylander, and we gotta let one of them go unless we want to TRIPLE down on not having money for depth for the next 8 years. Hopefully whoever the new GM is, comes in with a clear mind on the long term plan and sees a future where our cap is more balanced throughout the lineup even if we gotta lose some top talent because as we’ve been shown, the reality is, young talent isn’t everything in todays NHL, you need a lot more than talent guys to win. Even with all the great additions Dubas made at the deadline this year, we failed.

Hard to say with the Canucks....Tocchet got results toward the end of the year and improved greatly.....Of course one year earlier they did the exact same thing for Bruce. So hard to tell with the Canucks. If they just didn't start so poorly every year, they wouldn't have to fire coaches and play catch up all year.
Kyle Dubas gave the Leafs the tools to go deep this season. The real Tools ; Matthew's ( no show again ). Marner and Taverras not much better in the second round. Time to put the core 4 against the wall and brighten them the hell up.
He gave them the tools to have to deal with those players contacts after 4/5 years of signing them to absurd cap hits. If he was a better negotiator he could have signed better players around them but he put the keys of the franchise in the hands of two players who haven't proven a thing up to that point. We also saw how much he cared when Tavares took a knew to the face, when Mikheyev’s arm got cut, how intense he was when they beat Tampa. He truly cared and I don’t think that should be overlooked. Good luck in the future, Dubas.

Hyman is playing the best hockey of his life now in Edmonton. Etc. etc. Imagine the defense you could have if the money was spent on 2 middle line defensemen. Dubas did this team no favors.

As The Leafs Blow
This is a weird thought, but I'm kinda wondering if Dubas wasn't attempting a power play here. Everyone knows the Leafs are stuck between a rock and hard place rn. Trying to find a new GM is only going to complicate an already very complicated and time sensitive situation. With Dubas being so public about maybe not wanting to come back, I wonder if he was trying to catch the Leafs in a desperate moment by asking for the raise. Plus, Shanahan mentioning the email Dubas sent so deliberately makes me wonder what was written.

If you really are an actual professional, it should have been a phone call to say, "we need to meet and discuss this situation in person immediately - can we please make that happen ASAP?"

You nailed it with the dirty laundry stuff, but damn I love some behind scenes insight.
This is a potentially horrifically bad time to fire Dubas. This is a crossroads moment for the franchise and now they are getting a new vision with very little time to adjust and make plans for some extremely important pieces.
They're going to blow it all up and rebuild from scratch.

This decision aside, a company with this large of a fanbase should not be this open about decisions made within the front office. It will never end well.
Being transparent is good, but Shanahan revealed way too much in that press conference. The public doesn't need to know all that.
Let's see who the Leafs have historically cast out as 'toxic'.
Larry Murphy: Proceeded to be a key contributor on B2B Cups
Phil Kessel: Proceeded to be a fan favorite in Pittsburgh and key contributor on their Cup runs.
Watching this team is like watching Groundhog Day
The only way the Dubas Era could possibly end is by him losing another contract negotiation, but this time it was his own.
I'm a Maple Leafs fan! I'm also a Kyle Dubas fan. I'm also an Auston Matthews fan. Here's what I hope... I hope Dubas and Matthews are actually real friends. I hope Dubas gets a new job and takes Matthew there. Then I hope they run over the Leafs and everybody else. Brendan Shanahan deserves it. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Shanahan has done this wrong! It's not to say you cannot fire someone, it's that Shanahan did it wrong. I am also a Steve Dangle fan!
Agreed, it was an emotional and impulsive decision. I’m sure it won’t work out for the Leafs, but I am no expert. I hope it goes well though!
Well, it wasn't working WITH Dubas, so you gotta do something.
@@meowza oh yah that’s worked well for us every time

Showed passion and fire when his team played instead of sitting there like a stone statue and you say he wasn’t good?? Maybe hold some accountability on the players for disappearing in the playoffs. Dubas can only build a team that he believes will have success and arguably they did with a series win finally. Can’t blame him when the regular season goes so well then the team fails him during crunch time
I know not everything dubas has done has been fantastic but he has done better than any other gm for the leafs in the last 20 years.
Not even a leafs fan but that organization puts too much pressure on everyone involved. Look at the teams in the conference finals. All more relaxed and fun having organizations that don’t have overbearing mothers scolding them left and right. No wonder the team fails every year
@@davidwaxter66 But it wasn't just one year. It was year after year after year where the stars failed to show up when it mattered and Dubas continued to believe in this core. When was he going to learn?
I can't believe how wild this whole day has been. All the Marlies Coaching Staff have been told they're not being retained. Dubas Gone. Spezza Gone. Keefe is probably Gone. I imagine more than half this roster is gone. Management is going to be overturned with a new guy at the top.
Holy shit this is going to be wild. Buckle up, kids. This might be the most interesting offseason in Leafs history
Most painful. Seems like a rebuild is coming. Leafs fans can't wait another 10 years to have a cup chance. This is going in the wrong direction.

Keefe might stay.

While the Shanaplan fails, Kyle Dubas has gone to the Pens for success.
😂 huh
What do you mean they're still paying Babcock...
Kyle Dubas you ARE the GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins!!

Just look at who's still in the playoffs and look at their player salaries... I think you have a horrible mindset if you're willing to tolerate this. I want it built right, from the net out. So tired of the turnstile of Toronto goalies and the lack of character in this team.

Long overdue move and he's right, the whole house needs cleaning
Shanahan should be fired as well as the coaches. Its time for a change time to blow up the core that second round exit was straight up unacceptable.
Ok, so this happened. So now what? Is Shanahan going to navigate the next 5-6 weeks himself? As has been stated in this podcast and others today, the clock is really ticking, and now Shanahan doesn't have a Dubas or a Lou Lam to handle the tough stuff for him. This saga is just beginning.
You act as if this is rocket science or brain surgery. IT'S NOT. Shanny is smart guy, he will figure it out.
The organization in general is way better off than they were in 2013, not even close. That's why he got to fire Dubas. Also, Steve you got to read a bit better if you thought the initial announcement was anything but the Leafs choosing not to extend Dubas and nothing but that.
Well, there's one thing we can all agree about Dubas. He's horrible at negotiating contracts lol.
True but hes still young and Im sure hes learned alot with us, just sucks that another team is prob gonna reap the rewards of a more confident dubas in a few years time

It really sounds like Kyle Dubas rubbed Shanahan the wrong way when he asked for more money and made him deal with his agent.
The Tavares deal was the nail in Dubas' coffin. Shame that its taken years for a lot of people to see it
Tavares has been a regular 30 goal scorer and scored the overtime winner to put the Leafs into the 2nd round for the first time in 2 decades. You can't pin the lions share of the blame on him.

Why do you think Dubas wasn’t the one causing problems? The signs are there.
Well, looks like spezza's out of the picture too. Changes upon changes.
What exactly makes him a good gm
He may become a 'great GM' somewhere else, sometime down the road. Won't change how badly this opportunity was wasted. ... this era that he wasted was paid for by a decade of tanking/not making the playoffs. The core assembled was a complete disaster, every one of the contracts except maybe Nylander and that was a s-show of a process to get.
Dubas made pretty good moves… But like always with Toronto there must be a public scapegoat.
True
Its weird tho cause the public scapegoat was more Keefe and the core 4, Most people I feel thought Dubas was a pretty good GM.
@@eggcorns9422 It's definitely Keefe and the "C4".
Did you watch the video? Team performance was not why he was released it was the comments made during his presser and his negotiations afterwards. But yea, Toronto so bad right? As if no other teams release gms after a failed season. Braindead.
Shanny asked him not to speak to the media (yet). He did, he put himself before Shannahan and therefore the club. Goodbye
Saddest part is that Spezza isn't an option. He likely saw how Shanahan treated Dubas and figured "WTF am I doing here?"
Brendan Shanahan better be next
@@MaverickWall238 Never say never, look up Stacey McAlpine.
Toronto is a hockey town with a ton of history. Im sure there are guys out there who want a shot. Let's hope for the best.
Sounds like Shanahan didnt want to overpay one more member of the team
too bad Kyle and Keefe don't like being paid their AHL wages for tryin' to do NHL work !!
Idk why but the fact that Shanahan keeps specifying “Kyle’s office at Ford Performance Center” is cracking me up
If we take anything from Marner’s last signing, then I predict Willy is gone unless we trade Marner..
Lol didn’t the leafs add like a bunch of older players who “know how to win” and are those non talent forwards. The leafs lost cause couldn’t score and they’ve been declining in scoring for a few years
