      Completely agree. He hyped the hell out of that camera when it has soft 4k, cropped 4k, weak digital image stabilization, front focuses a lot, and tracking isn't the greatest.

    I wish these manufacturers would stop worrying about the top LCD and put a better feature in its place, ie more custom buttons, or another analog knob. I understand on this camera they want you to use the new RF more and I think it’s a forward thinking item (as a Sony shooter) but the top LCD just seems like a waste on a mirrorless camera when you see all that info in the EVF. Thanks guys as always!

    • @game2572
      @game2572 6 лет назад +4

      Look coming from a D-SLR shooter we have to ease in to change. For the people 40 plus we are used to Top lcd and a proper camera has one

    • @johnsoncityaerialphotograp7201
      @johnsoncityaerialphotograp7201 6 лет назад +1

      game2572 I can understand that.. I’m 43 this year as well, but only have a few mirrorless years behind me so I can see that perspective

    • @johnsoncityaerialphotograp7201
      @johnsoncityaerialphotograp7201 6 лет назад +3

      Prashanth Panicker if you’re using a dslr I understand but on a mirrorless this info is displayed through your EVF and on the back screen.

    • @DWaschnig
      @DWaschnig 6 лет назад

      I also can't live without a top LCD. It is the best way to know and set the exposure settings without needed to look through the viewfinder or at the rear display. I usually check it while talking to the models etc.. In this case it would be really awkward and look unprofessional if I would be looking through the viewfinder to do this

    • @kangsterizer
      @kangsterizer 6 лет назад +1

      i think its fine if it allows you to see stuff you cant see on the screen due to sunlight or lack of sunlight. that said id better have a better screen and a light sensor to switch the display into night mode than the top lcd, then use that for a dial of course

    Interesting and beneficial use of multiple input from Jordan and Steve.......with neither of them being a "Yes Man" to each other, they shoot differently and this brings more info to the viewer about how things can be managed when "problems" surface........nice touch.........

    'There is no clear winner' - Tony Northrup comparing this camera to the A7III. Thanks for your honest take Chris & Jordan!

    •  6 лет назад +7

      Tony was politicking hard trying to show the camera in the best light, this review is more objective.

    • @seacow2001
      @seacow2001 6 лет назад

      Nah, Tony is just leaving room for the future as he has learned his lesson while reviewing the 6dii. You can't tell the true value and utility of a camera when you have to push out a review after a week or two. Ultimately, it's better for your credibility to publish an update on a product than an "I was wrong" video.

    • @DeusExAstra
      @DeusExAstra 6 лет назад +3

      I agree that Tony was being overly generous with that comment, but otherwise the review was unbiased and showed how lacking the Canon camera is compared to the A7iii. So, I think Tony was just making the point that it's not a clear winner to ALL people. Some people are heavily invested in Canon glass and dont need all the features you get in the A7iii... so to THEM, it's not as clear as saying that the Sony camera is the winner. THEY might still want to get the Canon one... if they dont mind staying in an abusive relationship with Canon. But, still, I agree that Tony should have made a clearer statement about which camera won there. The A7iii did, without a doubt.

    • @Davitor1
      @Davitor1 6 лет назад +3

      DeusExAstra the A7iii still has a lower resolution and it’s made in Thailand with no articulating screen. I know the truth hurts but just get over it.

    I've had the EOS R for a day and I think the video quality is great when you leave the digital stabilizer off. It does seem to soften with the digital stabilizer added. The RF 24-105 IS does a great job on its own, I'd be happy shooting with that lens in a lot of situations.

      Not even G9 nor LX100 for that matter. This EOS R videos image quality and color science look pretty mediocre. Coupled with that 1.7x crop factor, definitely a big no-no for shooting videos.

    • @BlackWarriorLures
      @BlackWarriorLures 6 лет назад +7

      Yeah, I have been wondering about that crop factor. My little GH4 does about that well. The balance of power has shifted to Fuji, Sony and Panasonic.

      I was watching this review on my 4k TV and the video looked really soft/muddy. Thought it might be RUclips's compression, but the images (and product shots) were really sharp. Then I re-watched DPReview's recent X-T3 review and man what a difference!

    • @Davitor1
      @Davitor1 6 лет назад

      BROis the XT3 is not a full frame camera.

    • @BlackWarriorLures
      @BlackWarriorLures 6 лет назад +3

      Well, he never said the X-T3 was a full frame camera. In reality APS-C is marginally bigger than 35mm motion picture, smaller than Super 35mm motion picture film frame. So "full-frame" is relative.

  • @JorgeAguilera
    @JorgeAguilera 6 лет назад +6

    Damn, great review (especially the use of the EFS 17-55mm), but the only thing missing from this review was a real world test of Low Light photography and video.
    No one else has put the EOS R through it’s paces in low light. There’s a Canon produced video on their channel showcasing a photographer taking photos of miners in very low light conditions but I’d love to see you guys test low light for yourselves.

    • @ladislavsvencik
      @ladislavsvencik 6 лет назад +2

      What you expect. It was hunting a lot even in the day, will be even worse in low light logically. They also said the pictures qaulity is behind competition. Just go to DPreview, choose in studio scene comparsion tool 5DIV and you can compare the ISO performance for still which Is worse then Sony. And ISO in 4k Is restricted to only 12800 So it tells the full story. Subpar performance for more money then competition.

    My EOS R arrived today, and after some nervousness based on Jordan's video autofocus experience, I can happily report that for me its every bit as good as the 5D Mark IV even with adapted EF glass. My only gripes so far (other than the obvious spec disappointments) are:
    1) Auto ISO is not possible in CLOG
    2) Non-Canon EF-S glass doesn't auto-crop
    3) The multi function touch bar is stupidly horrible idea. CANON, get rid of it! We need tactile buttons and direct access to ISO & WB
    4) The rear dial is to far away from my thumb.
    Other than that, its actually quite a nice unit. Its biggest problem is, oddly enough for a Canon, its operation. Its comfortable enough to hold, but the lack of buttons and silly placement make it less comfortable to actually use.

    • @Ashmodai
      @Ashmodai 6 лет назад

      you still have to count in that 1080p is not its native resolution since it's shot in 4k... so yt itsself did some downgrade magic.

    • @idahofallsmagazine3691
      @idahofallsmagazine3691 5 лет назад +1

      I did the same. It's unfortunate because this footage is quite at odds with what I've seen elsewhere. If you look at 2:30, it's pretty obvious the image isn't really "soft," but is actually back-focused on the back of the chair. Almost like it was a lens issue...? Operator error? DPAF malfunction? Would love to get some input from the OP...

  • @JaysonYan
    @JaysonYan 6 лет назад +10

      1.7 crop means your basically using full frame glass on a m43 sized sensor. Because of this you are not able to use the lenses resolving power to their fullest extent, and we should expect soft footage.

      MikedieONE you’re correct on the Wi-Fi point. My 5D3 doesn’t have it and that is the one feature I miss compared to the 70D. As a first significant entry it’s a great effort, which will show development over time. Mostly it appears to be a mirror less 5D4 with some new twists. The absence of a 2nd card at release time is disappointing. The feature control on the new lenses or the adapter ring looks like an interesting innovation. More to come yet from Canon to be sure.

    Thanks for the review, done in depth and very helpful for making a buying decision. The review itself corresponded almost exactly to what I had assumed from reading the spec-sheet. The flaws in this camera show that it's not quite prime time at this stage. This model badly needs an upgrade already - probably an upgrade that will hike the price point. For the moment Canon - this is a no deal for me.

    The main advantage with the video recording of full frame cameras is that you can have easily shallow depth of field with relatively wide lenses. Otherwise the video shooting with smaller sensor like micro 4/3 and telephoto lenses can be equally good and with shallow depth of field.
    The crop mode of the RP during video recording is a big minus.

      Yeah, it doesn't seem like a camera made for us. I'm a video guy, but I don't see much that I don't already have in my little GH4. I could add an AtomOS to my little GH4 and have a monster video machine. I don't even see a way to use my Canon FD lenses on the new R mount either. At the very least I could mount old Nikon lenses on the Z6.
      The X-T3 and the Blackmagic P4k are the only two cameras I see as being a step up from what I have.

    If a mirrorless is basically useless for video (like the EOS R seems to be) than what is the point of going mirrorless for existing Canon Full Frame users (who are the only people that might have been interested in this camera)?
    The biggest issue with this camera is the price. Would it have been the cheapest full frame option on the market it might have had a chance. Being so much more expensive than the A7 III I can't imagine many people will buy it.
    And something else:
    I'd like to see you guys do a side by side comparison of some mirrorless cameras for continuous eye autofocus and include the G85. In my experience it works fantastic even with multiple people in the frame. (the face detect focus of the G85 focuses on the closer eye)
    Any chance of that happening?
    Cheers from Germany 🙂

  • @SuperLisandro86
    @SuperLisandro86 6 лет назад +1

    First review that they really push the camera and actually tell people the limitations it has. That's why Chris and Jordan are by far, the best reviewers.
    Tony Northrup compared the Eos R with the a7III, and the Canon lost on every comparision, but he managed to say they were even because Canon has a flip screen... So yeah, bloggers can know easily how are they recordind the 1.7 cropped 4k, the shitty 720p 120fps or the ridiculously bad video due to the electronic stabilizer. He also stated tha is better ergonomically then the a7, but he complained about the AF button (same as Chris), the touchpad (same as Chris), and that it has no joystick for focus point.. the a7III may not have the better grip, but apart from that, every button and solution they came up with made the camera pretty close to perfect, specially in my hand.
    Peter McKinnon says he is in love with the camera, and he talked about 120p video, which is limited to 720p an I think he didn't even mention it. Not even the problems with the stabilization or the softness of the 4k video.
    Nikon and Canon has margin to improve (at least Nikon has really good video capabilities), but until the next generation, when they fix this first problems and have a wider range of lenses, I doubt that people who moved to Sony will come back to their original brands.
    PS: I have to say than Iike the styling of Nikon and Canon better, the a7 desing is starting to be outdated, it has been 4 years since the a7II came out, it's time to redising for better grip, a little better ergonomics and specially a better aesthetics.

    Unfortunately a sad showing by Canon. Some of the decisions they made are really bizarre. Like the touch bar would have been better with just two programmable buttons. The mode button with dial?, slow touch screen, no continuous shooting with eye focus, very poor video, and overall a slow camera compared to even a Fuji. I'm not sure who this camera is for? If you already have a Canon lenses, I'm not sure why you would even want this over dslr.

    • @dancheb

      I credit Canon for trying out new innovative stuff - but that multi-function touch bar looks like a complete failure. It adds one more distinctive button vs a clickable wheel and completely robs user of tactile response.

I just want to buy a camera for the next 5-6 years and fuji delivers it. I will Switch from my 60d (very good Camera @ that time to the xt3. ) why? U say?coz i came from analoge photography i loved the dials to turn to. I am a dials User guy. I get so the fastest results Tosaymyself. Of i have a model that w8 professionality i dont want to Hang up with a touchbar 😂 in the End Canon was a good brand stood for quality that i Van See anymore 😞 Sony took the course i mean These guys made 75% of their profit with ps4. But also these guys surpassed the giants like Nikon & canon. Nevertheless a Sony is not for my use. I dont like the Colors at the and what the Camera throws @ me its lifeless. I tryed a 7ii omg i was so dissapointed at that time. Not how it was in my hands, but the Image quality wtf Full frame with a zeiss lens ( that is not a zeiss Lens its just the Name on it and is Manufactured by sony. At the same time i tryed the xt1 anything was perfekt but the af was slow and also dissaponting. And the Camera way to expensive not After Almosen 3 years i get a Camera with anything i want. Sry to tell to canon nikon sony.

    I really like the benefits of Canon and was looking to upgrade my 80d, but this is like a bad combination of the 6d mark ii and M50 with an annoying touchbar and poor ergonomics, built from leftover parts from the parts bin. I want to see a review of the Nikon Z6 and if that is not favorable, I'm moving to Sony or Panasonic for video (like many people).

      If you're moving because of video, you may want to consider the Fuji X-T3 as well. Their lens selection is meh, but depending on your needs it may work out even better. These guys just did a nice review on the X-T3.
      For FF, I agree, just get the A7 III it's already a proven work-horse. I'm sure Panasonic will be great and they have a history with MILC so they'll be ahead of CaNikon, but they still won't use PDAF and I'm sure they'll be going through their own first-gen learning curves. Not to mention the uber-expensive L-mount glass. Given the cost of the G9, GH5 and GH5S, I can't imagine how they'll price the FF bodies. Won't be cheap is my guess.

    Hello Chris and Jordan, love your videos since you guys were at TCS TV. I got a little bit of suggestion. I'm really intrigued to see your format combined with the old DP Review Field Test. I thought the way the ytest a specific camera by covering an event (eg. The Rodeo in 1DX Mark II field test or going for camping/outing in the Nikon D500 video). Just my two cents. Cause that kind of test can push a camera in review and it's also fun to watch. Keep up the good work.

    I was excited for this camera - as I'm a long-time Canon fan and have a strong lens investment. After seeing some reviews and reading some specs I was thinking about going a different direction - but I didn't. I picked-up this camera (from the Camera Store - shout out to fellow Calgarians). It's a better camera then the spec sheet shows. Although very new to it - I have been quite impressed and am enjoying it in the field. To be fair, my skill set and my needs are such that this camera hits a sweet spot for me in terms of preserving my lens investment, not being an expensive body relative to others, and giving me all the features I need in a good quality package. It's an upgrade from my D6 - so I'm long over-due for a new camera - which likely has something to do with how happy I am with it.
    Your review was great - very well done! If there was one thing I would have liked to have seen - it may have been a review of the support system around the camera. Specifically, I think that the control of the camera using a smart phone and the transfer of files to a smart phone while shooting is important. It makes a second card slot a little less of a concern. It's also an option for long exposure, etc - where the image stabilization is done via a tripod.

    I feel to have been waiting a very long time to upgrade my (now occasionally glitchy) A6000 with 35mm 1.8 OSS. I was quite prepared to jump to this Canon - as it really is available now - particularly with such a great range of lenses at launch - but! Lack of image stabilisation and a ridiculous 4K crop-factor seem to put paid to that idea (2 slots would have been nice but one isn't a deal-breaker). I can't wait another 6 months (perhaps 48 months - it's Canon, after-all) for an EOS RII as my A6000 is on its way out - but after 14k images so no complaints - I'm thinking I'll just have to wait another 6-8 weeks for the A7III/Batis 40mm F2 combination.
    I loved the colour rendition in your video, but... Close but no cigar...

    What do you guys think (everything is just about 4K filming on eosR) if i already have best canons crop lens 17-55/f2.8 that is left from my former 80D is it important to change it to at least 16-35/2.8L II lens? Will I feel any difference in 4K filming? Because of cropped 4K widest 16/17mm field of view is almost the same. Money not a question for me but does it worth spending another 1000$ for what will I get from L lens? Photography/videography is my hobby...

    I’m a Canon user. I have an old 60D and I’m looking to do a major upgrade. Currently I’m trying to decide if I should stay with Canon or maybe switch to the Sony A7R IV when it’s released later this year.
    I love the flip screen on the Canon and use it almost exclusively compared to using the view finder. It’s fantastic when shooting straight up or down. I will miss that with the Sony. I also understand I’m going to need to switch lenses, too - another big expense - but it seems Sony has taken the lead in camera technology and state of the art products.

    I think, most reviews miss a little detail. I might be wrong (and I'm glad to be corrected for I haven't used this camera yet), but as far as I understand, this camera actually wants to be a stills camera with added video features as alittle treat, but it doesn't try to be an allrounder or even a proper video camera. But somehow I've got the feeling, that most reviews focus on the video features (or maybe I've seen the wrong reviews). That's like watching a WW2 Drama and then after leaving the cinema complaining "Gosh that was a bad comedy!" It might have had comedic parts, but that wasn't the films focus. It's a bit like the 6D MK2 and the 6D MK1 before. Many complained about the specs, but I haven't heard of anyone who bought one to be severely disappointed.
    I have to confess that I'm mainly a stills shooter so I'm not that hurt by the (actually rather poor) video capabilities of this camera. But as such I can see this camera working very well for me. Also, it isn't aimed at professionals. It could have been (and maybe should have been), but it isn't. What it is aimed for in my opinion are Canon users, who want a DSLM and might be thinking about changing to Sony. It might not beat Sony on the spec sheet (and in some points won't beat it in the real world), but it offers a lot for Canon users: A familiar, easy to use ecosystem, good AF, lovely colours and full compatiility with existing Canon glass (EF, EF-S and due to the short flange distance even Canon F, if I'm not mistaken) plus it also uses the Canon LP-E6 batteries that every Canon user should have. So the EOS R doesn't want to be the start of your new system, it wants to enhance and complement your existing one.
    But as I said, I haven't used this camera yet. If you have, I'll be glad to learn from you about it.
    Anyway, as usual this is a great review!

    • @JesseKaufman
      @JesseKaufman 3 года назад

      I feel the same way .. I couldn't give 2 hoots less about video in my cameras (i'm only a stills shooter) .. I've read my entire 90D and 7D (Mark I) manuals cover-to-cover, EXCEPT the video sections, because I just have zero use for it (but that's just how I use the cameras, obviously) .. I'm definitely interested in the EOS R to finally make the jump to both full frame and mirrorless without completely breaking the bank .. I'd love to go w/ the R6, but the higher price tag is making that less likely (and I'd really prefer a higher MP, since I've become very used to the 32MP in my 90D)...........
