I hate myself that I bought the 6D Mark II a while ago. It's still a great camera, don't get me wrong. But the EOS R is not more expensive by a lot. The log and 4k is a great addition too. I tried it at Photokina and it's a great piece of tech - solid build, great to hold. TBH, it's my fav camera right now across all the brands.
If you use a potato computer, then it will take 7hrs. my midrange pc can render 4k footage of 30min in 30min with many luts and effects.its 2018,grow up 1080p looks ugly in many 4k or 2k displays.
It is probably because of its high bit rate. Higher bitrate = bigger size files = longer to render (I know at higher bitrate will probably give a better image, but the 100 Mbps on the Sony A7III just makes the files a much nicer size to work with).
I just bought this and I love it, but honestly, my workflow doesn't include any video. I bought it for photography only, and the sensor is fantastic. It feels nice and solid, and it's easy to use. The flip screen is also very useful for photography as well. Very happy with this to be honest.
Canon is not stupid. they will not going to kill the 1dx2 like this. thats why they didn't kill the 5dmk4 when they brought up the 6dmk2. Canon is not like Sony that they are killing their products so easily. they are building workhorses to serve you for long time, not just for couple of years. Something else to remember, the EOS R is the entry level mirrorless, not the flagship, and as you can see, in many situations is better than the other flagship cameras(i really love the way it looks on the 180MBps, its way too good to be true if you think about it). to be fair in comparison, you need to compare the EOS R with the Nikon Z6 and the A73. yeah i know, the R doesn't have stabilization, but the IS on the lenses are if not better than Sony, they are equally good.
I bought this camera yesterday. I took some 1080p 60fps footage in C-log today. I wasn't expecting much but it blew my mind. The quality of the footage is so nice and so easy to grade.
I'm trying to find out best ways to grade CLog from the EOS R, and how to do what Matti mentions at 8:05 about watching in Rec 709 while filming in CLog. Know how to do this? Any tips?
So basically dont use 4K, and dont use 120FPS. So the only two options to shoot in are 1080 24 & 60fps for $2300 bucks. Or you can pick up an A6500 and get a larger 4K image, 24, 60, and 120fps are usable options and have AF and *IBIS* for around a thousand bucks. The EOS-R is a decent camera, but for people that like to get the most bang for buck, its not the right choice in my opinion.
Factor in a decent lens. Especially for anyone who already has a couple nice Canon ones. My 8 year old Samsung Note 2 1080p video is a usable option too. Either be vague or specific, not both in one sentence.
@NGC1433 -Factor in a decent lens? A6500 w/Sigma 18-35 is $1800 new right now, the EOS-R is $2300 body only -Usable, what your version of usable NGC? 480p on my old Palm pda phone is usable also? Usable for me is the lowest quality I will deliver to a customer. Do you deliver wedding videos with your 8 year old Samsung? -Vague or Specific?........ Read the last sentence in my original comment.
I have a lower camera Canon M50 but I tried this one as well... and yes I am not happy with the crop. I shoot full frame cameras so I picked M50 mainly for video and vlog so I am super happy with it especially when it comes to price. Canon R is nice but it didn't convinced me enough to invest in that... M50 is just really good for really good price.
Thank you Matti for your disclaimer, appreciate it. I wish you would compare it more to the X-T3 you reviewed recently because they both announced almost the same time. You'll understand why there's so many drama about this camera. While X-T3 packed with so many features for only $1500, this camera doesn't make sense for $2300..way more expensive with less feature, even compare to Z6 or A7iii. Doesn't matter if it's full frame because it does a lot of crop anyway..and also the benefit of small sensor like APS-C and M43 like less rolling shutter (one thing you didn't test). And for Vlogging, why buy an expensive camera when you can buy M50 with great auto focus, great color and flip screen..for a lot cheaper?!
There are a bunch of apsc cameras like the sony a6300/a6500 that have tons of rolling shutter. The 1dx ii is full frame and has virtually no rolling shutter
Apart from the obvious difference in sensor size, is there any difference between the capabilities of the EOS R and EOS M50? They're both 2018 mirrorless canon cameras, both shoot 4k (cropped) and 1080p 60fps, both have flip LCDs, both use the DIG!C 8 processor, both have a timelapse function... etc. All that with the M50 coming in at a quater of the price, it's got me wondering who Canon are targeting with these cameras?
Why with the crop, Canon? I would love to consider Canon again, I mean the color science is just mind-blowing. It’s just not there for me yet to re-consider. I get that they don’t want to box out their other products, but maybe they’ve fanned out their catalog too much?
I've heard from varioius places that a lot of it has to do with them simply not having the processing tech to handle 4k in full frame without overheating. Whether's actually true or not is a question.
@@kunkelvideography9170 people buying that camera expect the crop and have lenses to accommodate said crop. In this case most users are expecting no crop. Especially considering many users are hybrid users who shoot video and photo often on the same shoot. It would be quite the inconvenience to have to switch lenses on a shoot just to accommodate taking photos or vice versa with video if you're on a shoot where you're doing both at the same time. I'm not saying your example is wrong but I think it applies to different users.
I really appreciate your honest opinions and general lack of bias. There's a *little* bias in your reviews but not much so I feel like I can trust your reviews. Keep up the good work!
You are messing with the codecs again :) the 400+ mbits on the canon is for ALL-I recording which means that in terms of efficiency it is actually close to the 100-150Mbits longgop codec on the other cameras and the EOS R too. The EOS R has 4K with longgop and I think it was something like 120Mbits.. Correct me if I am wrong :).
then educate about other cameras and then make comparisons.this is the problem with canon fanboys review, they always review only from outdated canon's perspective. sony's video is xavc-s,its way more efficient than canon's codec. try to learn about xavc-s compression and then do reviews.also even in sony you can get gamma assist display while shooting in log,so you are not stuck seeing greyish image on the screen.
chandan cg and the problem with Sony fanboys is that they rather talk about the cameras having better specs. They never show any examples. I mean think about it if Sony cameras was so much better why the fuk waist your time watching lesser cameras.
@Matti Well it is not only about the Mbits. It depends what type of compression is used there - H264, H265, is it ALL-I or ... the modern and efficient compressions are compressing smart by skipping parts of the frames that are not changing from frame to frame and later in post the computer makes them out. MJPEG is ALL-I compression, the 400+mbits ALL-I is cool too but it is not 4 times better than a modern H264/265 with 100-150Mbits, at least not all the time because there is an algorithm that is hiding the losses. The downside of those modern compressions is the editing time. If your PC is not optimized for playback of this compression it will be quite heavy to work with it. It will be much smaller as a file but harder to edit. That was my point - it is not many times better, it is actually pretty close and depends on the footage - if you have a lot of action the ALL-I can be better.
The issue isn't the camera. A lot of the issue people are having, are camera reviewers on RUclips absolutely destroying one brand for certain features or compromises and then turning around and praising this camera for making those exact same compromises or having the same features.
Matti, I like your videos but.... how you can personally recommend a $2500 camera on the condition the person does not need 4k? I'm not saying 4k is vital, but who would pay $2500 to shoot in 1080p? Why not use an older Canon then?
I have used lots of Canon cameras, then my own camera is the sony a6300. I found that usually the Canon cameras could make a much better image (photo and video) but when you put some time and effort into it even the budget sonys can give a image that can rival even Red cameras.
Great review! This camera is the reason that I am finally done with Canon and switching to the Sony a7iii, but I appreciate that you were realistic and didn't say some crap about it being a way to challenge your creativity.
David Ramos - He doesn’t need to show you anything. Why do you feel so insecure? Yeah Canon is the best for you so what, you have a better life now? It’s just a piece of metal that takes pictures nothing to be really exciting about. Get a real life.
Matti I appreciate this in-depth review. No overpraising the camera and no needless overbashing. Just stating things as they are and allowing the viewer to make up their own mind. IMO the graphic showing the crop at 11:44 says it all. Too many crop issues with this camera aside from all the other issues. Better to go for a Sony or wait for a higher end Canon mirrorless next year.
Is it just me, or the lowlight areas look like the footage was falling apart more than the xt3 did? And if the 4k is cropped, then it almost has the same field of view with 4k on the xt3 even if it has a lil crop
@@TJIzzy But what's awesome with Fuji is they base their lens' focal lengths on full frame equivalent. With a 23mm lens that crop is barely gonna be above 35mm.
I'm not arguing against fuji, I would take an xt3 over an eos r no question. I was just putting the different crops into perspective. You will always get a shallower DOF, better lowlight performance etc. on a larger sensor size. The eos r having a 1.8x crop on its 4k is them protecting other lines. Not mentioned in Mattis review; it has insane amounts of rolling shutter.
Finally someone tested the 17-55 efs on this camera. Was waiting for that to see if this was a good upgrade path for me. Glad to hear it works, but loosing 60p sucks...I may have to wait till I can afford full frame lenses and the camera at the same time. For now I'll stick with my 80d
Nice video Matti. I really want to get this camera as I have mostly Canon glass and I love Canon cameras for photography. But what's putting me off is the fact that when using crop lenses (APS-C) such as the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 the camera downsizes the output image from a 30 megapixel to 11 megapixel. I was contemplating selling my 80d until I realised this. Also, when you get used to handheld shooting with an IBIS sensor camera like the GH5 it's very hard to go back to cameras that don't have it.
Dude, this quality is sooo good, this log profile really brings out the colors, and the in camera stabilization makes me jealous!! haha like its soooo smooth and high quality looking just to be 1080! fantastic review! Could you by chance do a review on cinema cameras? Like the c200 the c300 c100 that would be interesting! Also maybe some of the matti haapoja vlogging techniques and angles, like how you go about placing your camera somewhere and riding by. Or how you go about filming when you are by yourself! Love your videos dude.
Am I the only one that noticed there is a HUGE difference in sharpness at 14:55 with the 3 videos from A7III, X-T3 and eos R? I mean the R is so muddy it seems like 720p....
richard karamel so I think it’s time for you to ask for glasses 😂. I shoot Canon, Nikon and Sony, so Before trolling you should think first and look cafefully. BTW look at Dpreview video review and J Drake clearly says the video quality is very soft 😉
Yes its noticeable. He keeps on repeating 'color science' like the good salesperson he is and no mention of the eos R image softness. Canon sent this guy a unit as a last ditch attempt to appeal to the vlogger crowd. Personally I think this would be a foolish purchase if you're looking to use this camera mostly for video. And although the colors coming out of the camera are very nice, its difficult to overlook all the shortcomings.
Sure, but thats a completely different price point camera.I'm sure the EOS R is an amazing camera for photography, but for video, lacks too many features.
haha yah , sony a7iii and fuji xt3 looks so good , and who the hell buying camera only because color science XD . if we talking about 600 euro camera yes . canon m50 is the king XD
Matti, I appreciate your feedback on this. You balanced both the cons of this camera with some of the pros well. I've seen some channels where they are blinded by their Canon loyalty, and to me this review was actually way less bias than others I've seen. I've seen some people put this camera on a pedestal and make it something its not, but you did not do that with this review. Instead you called it what it is, a stills camera with casual vlogging capabilities. Its your commentary that keeps me coming back to your channel! Thank you for your insight!
Thanks dude! But to be honest I have a feeling few people are promoting it just cause they have to. Most of us RUclipsr’s have a lot of freedom to be honest about things which is awesome.
Well that good to hear. I've been a long time Canon fan and using their cameras for years now, but they just aren't providing me with the tools I need to create future films. I know the best tool is the one you master, but I also feel that some tools are better than others. Anyway, its a great time to be a hybrid shooter. Its incredible to see the revolution that is happening in the Camera industry.
14:43 whoa. What is the fuji doing to your face? Something really weird going on. It's like a combination of pincushion and barrel in different spots. I read a while back that fuji does lens correction in camera so that they can essentially make smaller fast lenses and just do all of the corrections before you see the actual image. Maybe there's a little fugasy going on with that whole process.
I’m curious to see if Canon will release another high level DSLR ever again, or if the future of cameras is all mirrorless with their new lens system. A 5Dv or 1DXiii would be interesting.
Buying this camera specifically for video use makes absolutely no sense. The only takeaway here is you're getting canon color science with a bunch of limitations that older cameras have. At this point if you're dropping over 2k for a camera you should be getting a bunch of video options.
What camera for vlogging that have great color science would you recommend I was thinking Cannon 6D Mark ii but idk if there is a better video vlogging camera ? Any recommendations?!
Whenever I see your videos and specially camera reviews, then I always feel, you will always give positive review on canon, even though it's not up to mark and you won't even use it in your videos. Your way of saying for canon is always different. And whenever there is any other camera review like Sony, even though it's better and even you know it, still your perspective is always negative. I don't know whether you are really attached to canon or if it's paid.
I think the reason why there’s so much anger towards this camera is because it’s yet another crippled device from the offset. Cropped 4K is just a joke, it’s not like they don’t have the technology - They have the c700 FF, 1dx II heck even 1Dc back in the day, They’re resting on their superior color science and autofocus - but as fujifilm have shown (albeit in an aps-c cam) canons lead is slowly diminishing. How many more years before Sony cracks their color science? If their e mount lenses weren’t so insanely expensive then the fence sitters - like me admittedly - wouldn’t even be giving this attention. Look at how embracing people are for products like the BMPCC4K even though it has many flaws. Ultimately on this evidence, the only genuine 4K AF FF option is A7III.
That's why Canon has the largest shares on the market. They play their cards right, even if isn't in the consumer's interest/advantage. They know they have the best color science, they know they have the best articulating screen with fast responsive touch screen and they know they don't have to crop their 4K video either. And in their defense, all "photography" cameras, whether its FF or APS-C, is essentially primarily designed to be a camera with video capabilities at hand. Their philosophy is ..... if you want a camera for video purpose only then turn to pro camcorder or cine line cameras (C200). I think another important issue people tend to forget is how much camera manufacturers are competing with cell phones with great cameras in them and the convenience that goes along with it. When it comes to spec sheets its hard not to judge what a camera is capable of. But lets all keep in mind what a camera should be .... and that is of course, a camera.
I’ve tried everything out there and I always end up staying with Canon because of the obvious things like having a flip screen, dual pixel autofocus and amazing (plus consistent) colors. Their products very predictable results, and that’s important when most of your main focus is on the art itself. Time spent troubleshooting is time not... shooting. Great review! 👌
My 1998 Honda Accord is extremely *predictable* and reliable but doesnt have any of todays tech and specs. But when is was time to meet my wife's parents for the first time. I drove my CLS 550 to get the job done, lol. Old reliable(predictable) is nice to have, but sometimes new tech does things old reliable cant do all while leaving a lasting impression. Great colors today come in a simple lut download in todays age for all cameras. No wide shots and bokeh in 4K, and no usable 120FPS?...........1080 24 & 60 fps is not gonna wow and leave that lasting impression in 2019 like the new tech will.
In my years of shooting with just about every camera out there, I can say for certain that specs aren't everything. When you have a crew behind you and every second matters, predictable ends up being more important. Almost every single a7 body I've used overheated on set in under an hour. Nobody cares about 120 FPS at that point, or 4K for that matter. Lasting impressions will come from the creativity of your art, not the camera you use to make it IMO. Just my experience.
I truly understand your point Jervy. I still shoot with my 6 year old D800e, my 5 year old Tamron 70-200 VC, and Tamron 24-70 VC, plus other D series lenses form the 90's and probably put around 70k+ shots on that combo. Im not gonna sell that kit because image quality is still great and it always works(predictable) even though its a little old. But I am in the market for a mirrorless for more video gigs and silent shooting when needed and would be nice to throw on a money-maker double camera strap and take two bodies into events. So for me I do care about 120FPS for video portraits, and 4-6 minute wedding highlight videos and 4K for the cropability in post and future-proofing, plus I always wanted to look cool with a second body and those sexy leather straps.
i think every cameras outhere has predictable result these days, out there many people use varieties of camera brands for their living outside Canon and they produce a great result. Not that i am trying to trash Canon, but saying other brand is not reliable and not predicable is understatement. Just remember BBC use sony a7s for their planet earth, every camera is predictable if you have spend many hours on that particular camera. And of course if you have using a camera brand so many yeaaars, you are in a bubble that you think yours is the best camera out there.
Matt, thanks for the in-depth review and for actually showing the differences in features (such as the 60 fps and the 1.7x crop in 4k). I'm investing soon in a travel project on my own, and you and Peter have been my top inspirations. I've been trying to decide between the 6D Mark II and the EOS R but now I think I've decided on the EOS R.
14:14 i think your whitebalance on the sony is off, or if you had it set correctly, the lighting changed a bit while you were doing the test. Never seen such a magenta touch. The Colors on the New Sony Cameras are insanely good.
4:00 - When Samsung does this in 2010 with their NX system nobody bats an eye, but now on Canon it's cool. Eh, wish the NX was more successful. Certainly deserved it.
Wow the image in the Canon also seems a lot softer than in Sony, ALOT. The colour science is the best, but Sony is not far away. Now if only Sony made a model with a flip screen... I really cannot understand why they dont do it.
That EOS R image is incredibly soft. Even for 1080p that would be considered soft, almost as it ifs out of focus compared to the other two. Certainly wouldn't be able to crop in on the image for 4K to 1080 timelines. Skintone wise there really isn't much difference between the A73 and EOS R.
Arri Alexa cameras also produce soft images but those are the dominant production cameras around. There is more to the story than just sharpness and honestly, it's a matter if finding the right camera for the job. If you need a more modern, sharp, clean look, go with Sony.
I think the reason for drama is that we are all secretly(or openly) hoping and praying for a great Canon camera because we all want to go back. Many of us have started on and used Canon for many years. We loved the usability and great colors of Canon. So it's more that Canon let our hopes down so we are still with another system like Sony or Panasonic. Of course not everyone needs a beast of a camera like 1DX2 to get all the specs...
Loved this review Matti - prompted me to buy one 👍🏻 Would you mind me asking what the intro music is for the first minute, as my family loves it but I keep having to keep rewinding and replaying it 😂
The problem with all these youtube reviews is that they didn't have to pay for the camera. If you paid 5k for this camera/lens would you still be ok with all the shortcomings? I doubt it.
@@thisandthat1233 Yes very true, we have a number of exceptions though: the Northrups, for example, or at least they pretend very smartly that they are independent. Matti doesn't pretend, he is the soldier of Canon, and he honestly told us on the very first 5 minutes.
Man, just gotta say that it's been really cool watching your stuff for the past couple years. But the coolest thing for me is seeing you get more and more comfortable on camera. You were never "stiff" at all or anything, but seeing how relaxed you've become makes me think you were maybe holding the real Matti back just a little. So cool to see that. ✌️😉
Great review with awesome footage. But I miss the days when cameras were just used to take photos. I have no interest in video so it's hard to find a review that just tells me what the still image quality is like.
Haha. I love how even though I don’t know much about cameras and had no idea what you were talking about half the time, I still couldn’t stop watching. I love your videos. You’re doing great! Any tips for beginner vloggers?
I'm not angry with Canon, not since I have now moved on to another camera line and I'm ecstatic about that change. So, I 'was' angry a year ago but after leap to Sony and I'm good to go.. Yet, as a long, long, long time Canon user, and the frustration they have put their users through, it's still alive in my psyche. Canon has frustrated me to no end and I see this camera and.. well, I guess I should be thankful I changed. With this Canon, yes, its a start for Canon and they will improve it eventually. I get that. Yet their track record of leaping forward quickly is not good. As the once "leader" in innovation, they have fallen flat on their laurels. Why support them? Why pay more for a camera that has so many shortcomings compared to the a7III? And if you're into video, Panasonic is also going to kick this Canon to the curb. I look at that new Canon 28-70 f2 and it's $4000 in Canada. That is insanity! And the Canon Filter Adapter with the variable ND is $520 Canadian. It holds a filter!! $200 Max! And it's only good with OLD lenses.. It doesn't work on the new lenses. That's the realityl. Also, No IBIS and that $4000 28-70 has no stabilization either. More Insanity. I just can't imagine getting excited about this camera or the glass. It's shocking... well, I guess it's not a shock. It's typical. I can't, in my right mind, support Canon while they drag their faithful followers through this long drawn out upgrade while so many other camera lines are leaping ahead. Sony had to stop slamming the retail counters with upgrades and advancements, because they are too far ahead now. They are sitting back, building yet another market changer. The a7SIII and an updated a6500 will also kick Canon in the Canon balls. Hey, I still love Canon... or should I say, I want to! But I'm not playing their game. It's insanity. A person looking to jump into mirrorless and own a killer system?? the a7III and the Tamron 28-70 f28. For less than the price of the Canon R, with 4 times the kick ass power. I think the R stands for "Really??" Are you kidding me? Lol
I have to say this is EXACTLY how I feel too... you hit the nail on the head! I love (loved) Canon and wanted this camera to be great, but I just can't get excited about this camera. Ergonomics look great and it will definitely be a great stills camera, but that's not enough anymore when competitors are pushing to create these great all around hybrid cameras. Also, I'm surprised more people haven't brought up the lack of stabilization (in the lenses AND body)... Makes me think they rushed this camera to market (to keep people from leaving) and the next generation will have IBIS.
That's right the filter only works on thier adapted lenses but not with their native ones...That's crazy. Even Canon M50 is still better value than this camera. I also don't really like to support for a company that only depends on their brand rather than innovation.
What cheap beginner sony cam can you suggest for me to get first? I'm a beginner and I'm just starting to figure things out with these camera brands and stuff.
So I am stuck between the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7 III. I like to shoot a lot of concerts, nightclubs, parties and occasional portraits. I have been using the canon 80D and its not bad for what it does, but I've been looking for something that does better in low light and does better focusing on movement. I might want to get into video at some point but mostly just photography at the moment. I don't know if the differences between these are so big, but if they are not I am thinking of just getting the EOS R because I enjoy the bigger body and comfortably.
Nice general review Matti. You used the C300 of the monologue portion? However, I was shocked though at how soft all the video from the EOS R was!! Is it just me? I was watching on my 65" oled and IMMEDIATELY noticed the EOS R's image was much softer (similar to the iPhone XS situation) when doing the headshot comparisons (to the Sony and Fuji). ie - Sony and Fuji you could see your pores, Canon looked soft (like a softening filter was applied), lacked detail in the hair, etc. I'm not talking pixel peeping scrutiny - I was sitting on my sofa watching, then jumped up for a closer look. On my laptop, same thing. (thought it was a scaling problem with my TV). This seemed exactly the same as on the DPreview video, except the subject was much future away. The face and body seems soft, out of focus. I agree, by far the most important thing is image quality (including colour), specs mean nothing without this (look at Arri). I love the colour science as well, but the rest of the specs, and the soft images have me scratching my head. I have high hopes for the new RF mount and the future, but I'm not sure about this camera. I hope Canon doesn't handicap future iterations in fear of cannibalizing higher tier products. Keep up the great work Matti.
I am a latecomer to the game, and I've watched a hell lot of EOS R videos and the image was soft everywhere. Exactly this happened with the Canon GX10/XF400 cameras, surprisingly soft image. Possibly Canon engineers are overkilling the wizardry of image manipulation called "color science", and the image details are lost. This exactly what Sean Tucker has explained.
Kind of a downer for not being able to record in 60fps with a crop lens... weird issue. Still holding off until about January hoping Canon comes out with firmware that resolves a lot of things wanted or hopefully maybe a new camera to come out with the old joystick/wheel instead of that touch switch I plan to rent one next year as it has a lot of what I like but as well as a lot of stuff I have now with older cameras that it does not... :/
Would rather have the new GoPro than that camera for vlogging. It is not a good camera for filmmaking when there is so many better options out there. So many folks trying there best to justify it as a good camera, when in reality it come up way short of the mark.
No I havent tried it and I wont be trying it. It doesnt offer anything to the plate that my Sony A6500 cant do already. No IBIS, cropped and crippled video. Based on that I wont even entertain it. It is also expensive for what it offers in comparison to other cameras out such as Fuji XT-3 and A7iii. I am not a fan of Sony although I use one, more so the A6 range due to the fiddly nature of the controls and god awful menu setup. But it has been my workhorse as I waited on all these new releases. Nothing out so far that would make me justify spending several £K / $K for my photogrpahy or vlogging. Will wait and see what the New A7000 is all about in a few weeks and maybe that will tempt me to change.
And so many people thinking that everybody camera needs are the same. A lot of people are happy with 1080p and flip screen cause they want the better photography camera. The canon R produces better images than a Sony A7iii, weather sealed, better ergonomics, higher resolution LCD, better EVF, so it seems like it’s offering a better camera than A7iii. Stop drinking the coolaid and go create. They both offer different benefits
Learned a lot with that test actually. Learned with my own eyes that 108060p is super soft, 720p120 is so awful I actually checked my RUclips settings cause I thought auto quality dropped to 480p or something. Also learned that AF does not work in 120p which is as hilarious as it gets. This camera is the joke of the year. The Z6 is cheaper, way better 4K with no crop, as good AF and colors, better slowmo, IBIS, better Dynamic range for stills. The only pros of the EOS R vs the Nikon is the flippy screen. The soon to come A7SIII will probably destroy both for video anyway. Not to mention the already announced Pana S1 with 4K60p 10 bit that will blow this 5y old Canon tech joke in all video aspects.
I'm looking at the Nikon Z6...better low light performance than the Z7. I never thought I'd consider Nikon after its bad reputation for video, but they've stepped up their game. People dismissed this camera because of only one card slot but really I think I like it more than the Sony A7iii. Maybe the next iteration of the Canon EOS R will have what we're looking for. I would definitely pay extra for that.
I'm a hybrid photographer and videographer with a 6D MII for video, 5D MIV for stills and an XC15(!) for a B cam for event video. With the sensor on this R and the flip screen, plus 4:2:2 10-bit external, the EOS R replaces all three. Weight with the control ring is not that different from the 5D MIV, so that's not a factor, but the form factor is nice. Sorry, the Sonys are just too small to use without a cage. The R feels really nice, and that's obviously a really important element. Plus, you have all the benefits of C-Log over S-Log. Just got mine yesterday and looking forward to putting it through its paces!
Matt, I prefer your work with the A7iii. This is an entry level camera that should have been $1500. Colors are the only reason to stay with Canon at this point.
I wonder if some of the negative features can be fixed in firmware. Obviously not the ergonomic stuff, but things like the 4k crop. Of course it could be a cpu limitation, or simply throttled on purpose.
I got to try the R in Copenhagen about a month ago and I cried a little when I had to hand it back. I only got hands on with it for a couple of hours but I was very impressed. For vlogging, I agree that it's the best on the market (flip lcd is everything). Yes, it's lacking 120 and the crop on 4k is annoying but the positives outweigh the negatives in my opinion. It's essentially like an M50 on steroids, which, as an M50 user at the moment, is a good thing 😁 In my opinion, it's the camera to get if you're wanting to go from a crop sensor to full frame and maybe have already invested in canon glass. From what I heard, this is (obviously) just the beginning for the R series. I think there's gonna be some exciting things (especially for vloggers) in the future for the R series! So stoked to get mine next week when it finally lands at Canon Finland 🤘 P.s. did you use the 16-35 f4 IS or f2.8? I tried it with the f4 but one thing I didn't try was the 2.8 with the digital stabilizer. Wondering if it's worth the extra stop and losing a bit of the frame in the crop.
Look how insanly soft the video from the EOS R is compared to Sony A73 during the color/saturation comparison @ 14:56. Many reviewers have claimed that the 4K footage from EOS R has nowhere near acceptable sharpness and detail-level and i can see why. That's awful. Doesn't look like there's any detail past 1080p :/ The EOS R really is the biggest turd released this year. With no dual card slots, no IBIS, old outdated sensor and that huge 4K crop (that looks more like 1080p) it shouldn't have cost more than $1400-1500 in my opinion. The ergonomics, weathersealing and that nifty sensor cover is great though, and those are the main advantages i can see compared to the competition.
I have to agree im not an expert when it's about fimmaking but I have to say I do like the colors in the eos r more but I think in this comparison the sharpness of the Sony a7 iii is much better im thinking about either getting the Sony or the canon as my first camera
You did a very good review, the biggest question is are you buying this camera with those expensive lenses if canon didn’t gave you for free? Because free stuff had different feeling than buying stuff. Thank you again and I really like your videos
the canon images do not look very sharp. i love canon but in the three side y side still frames the canon was soft. wonder if it is focus problem or the crop in 4k
For me the best thing about EOS R is really the adapter with ND filter! I may actually move from Canon 80D just because of that feature alone. Also I will be able to use the Sigma 18-35 1.8 for documentary and tripod tutorial videos stuff I usually do without the need of 50fps. Like it! Just wait a little longer until it gets a price drop.
The reason im contemplating changing from Canon real soon, is the absense of (at least) 1080p 120fps. Its really ridiculous they still haven’t included that in these cameras.
Awesome review... I noticed Canon Being So much softer than sony and fuji in the comparison video... Your beard is tac sharp on the sony, a little less sharp on the fuji and just blurry on the canon... Isn't that an issue???
Is it just me or does the A7III have the best colors? I feel like it looks so much more natural, where the Canon looks like it's trying to oversaturate.
Such a great honest review. I felt that Peter's review was kinda biased and praising the camera too much but you give your best true opinion the good the bad. Pros and cons. Awesome work Matti! Peace :)
All EF-S lenses are for crop sensors so I don’t understand your surprise. Fuji records 4k at 400mbps (so shame you omitted that info). But the color science is so true. I have A7RII, X-T3 and canon. And I love that canon feel. Fuji comes second just a touch behind. And if bloggers don’t care about 4K with crop - you’re fine with 80D guys.
The "door" that closes over the sensor is the shutter. It's much more fragile than the sensor and won't stop you getting dust on there. I think people assume that this is a better solution, but it's probably not.
Hey Matti, really interesting to hear your views after the tidal wave of negativity out there. I tried the EOS R on a Canon UK event and I wasn't expecting to like it. I was pleasantly surprised. Especially how easily I got used to it. The lens ring was really intuitive to me and I loved the screen swipe autofocus point change ability. Dragging my thumb across the screen and the focus point follows. Nice. It's not for everyone and what's interesting to me is where this technology will take them. Low light shooting is a big deal for me, mostly stills at this point, but it's better than the kit I use right now. Loving the colours on your footage, super nice. Think it's worth taking a proper look at and I hope to test one out in the near future. One camera to do it all doesn't exist, but I think it comes close for many people, and the colour science makes novice filmmakers, like myself, have a bit of an easier time in post. Thanks for your thoughts as always. Cheers JT
Super cool to hear your thoughts man! It’s interesting to see reaction to specs vs actually trying it in real life. Cause I went through the same thing
I appreciate this honest review Matti! Seems like the only true advantage this camera has over the competition is the color science. The ND filter system seems cool, too. I think having 4K 60, 1080 120, and IBIS would improve your films much more than a little bit better color science though. And needing an adapter to use your “old” CANON lenses on a CANON body?? Come on... The GH5 is killing it for me right now and thinking of adding an a7iii to the arsenal soon 😍 Cheers!
“I wouldn’t use 4k... I wouldn’t use 120 fps... I wouldn’t use enhanced digital stabilization...cannot do 60 fps with ef lens” So the Canon has bad specs compared to other cameras and on top of that the specs it has are unusable. What a disappointing camera.
I have the 5DIV and I shoot a lot in 120fps in 720p and mix it in with my 24fps at 1080p. I think it looks great. I do wish there was autofocus so I need to manual focus. I am very interested in this but I may wait to see what the next R camera will be.
Been waiting for this!!! (ALSO Malcolm Gladwells Outliers has been one of my fav books, since I was 13 and my class teacher told me about 10 000 hours.)
Hi Matti, Love your channel and would love a similar look to your opening sequence so wondered if you could confirm which LUT was used from which pack, please? I'll probably but both but would love to know which one is it please :)
Canon really needs to come out with a full frame camera that does 1080 120p, 4k non crop, ibis with good bitrate, a flip screen and they'll be back on top.
Hope you guys are okay with long reviews haha. Let me know what you think of the camera especially if you've tried it out?
I hate myself that I bought the 6D Mark II a while ago. It's still a great camera, don't get me wrong. But the EOS R is not more expensive by a lot. The log and 4k is a great addition too.
I tried it at Photokina and it's a great piece of tech - solid build, great to hold. TBH, it's my fav camera right now across all the brands.
Hi @Matti Haapoja. I want to buy a 5D4 . Soo what do you think about this camera ? Love your work man
Hey matti, did you change anything audio wise? It sounds like somethings not right with the audio.
I actually bought the 6D Mark II not too long ago and actually like it quite a bit! Super Under rated in my opinion. Would love to try the new EOS R.
Fair review. You’re much better at grading canon footage for sure. I wasn’t really happy with how the Sony colors were going for you.
I was bummed out about the crop in 4k at first... but it took me over 7hrs to render my 4k video last night soooooo now I realized I hate 4k.
Hahaha yep been there done that. Just not worth it sometimes.
Yep I’ve returned my R. I’ve also realize the M50 might be better for me. This too much camera for me.
If you use a potato computer, then it will take 7hrs. my midrange pc can render 4k footage of 30min in 30min with many luts and effects.its 2018,grow up 1080p looks ugly in many 4k or 2k displays.
4K isn’t the problem, it’s your computer.
Matti always looking like the sun in his eyes haha.
Dang that sun 😂
@@mattih You have a doppelganger in Portland, Oregon, btw.

If this camera had 120fps on par with the 1dxII in 1080p, this camera would have been a better buy!
Of course hah but the 1dx2 is also way more expensive
Thats why canon didnt do it
Nikolay Panov I know :/
Could use twixtor maybe?

Too Shmart all depends on the person bro, maybe for a video only person but for a pro photographer who also wants vlogging this is a perfect camera
Nikon Z6?
Factor in a decent lens. Especially for anyone who already has a couple nice Canon ones. My 8 year old Samsung Note 2 1080p video is a usable option too. Either be vague or specific, not both in one sentence.
@NGC1433
-Factor in a decent lens? A6500 w/Sigma 18-35 is $1800 new right now, the EOS-R is $2300 body only
-Usable, what your version of usable NGC? 480p on my old Palm pda phone is usable also? Usable for me is the lowest quality I will deliver to a customer. Do you deliver wedding videos with your 8 year old Samsung?
-Vague or Specific?........ Read the last sentence in my original comment.
@@tylerroberts5012 the best hybrid photo video camera right now is A7III.
I totally agree with viandita, Why would spend 2300euros (only body) for v-logging, M50 is good choice for v-logging.
Rolling shutter over noise? Lemme' guess, you're just starting out mate.
@@nicobryan9519 That's very true.
Very true, the X-T3 is so much better at $1499 plus you forgot the Canon needs a $200 adapter...
Yea I honestly don’t know myself. I’ve never heard a good reason for it.
I've heard from varioius places that a lot of it has to do with them simply not having the processing tech to handle 4k in full frame without overheating. Whether's actually true or not is a question.
The RED scarlet also has a 4K crop, no outrage there....
Andrew Kunkel Videography the RED Scarlet also does a lot of other things. Don't be stupid.
Hm room for thought. Not completely sure exactly how it compares but rate wise but I do know that All-I is a better codec then long gop.
14:57 :D that X-T3 looks like a smartphone next to the others...
then educate about other cameras and then make comparisons.this is the problem with canon fanboys review, they always review only from outdated canon's perspective. sony's video is xavc-s,its way more efficient than canon's codec. try to learn about xavc-s compression and then do reviews.also even in sony you can get gamma assist display while shooting in log,so you are not stuck seeing greyish image on the screen.
chandan cg and the problem with Sony fanboys is that they rather talk about the cameras having better specs. They never show any examples. I mean think about it if Sony cameras was so much better why the fuk waist your time watching lesser cameras.
@Matti
Well it is not only about the Mbits.
Yea, those specs are crazy for that price...I'm super late, but i know what you mean. Lol.
Yes Daniel, now that you decided to switch to the Sony show us what you can do with it.
David Ramos - He doesn’t need to show you anything. Why do you feel so insecure? Yeah Canon is the best for you so what, you have a better life now? It’s just a piece of metal that takes pictures nothing to be really exciting about. Get a real life.
Yes Laurent L he can also choose to do nothing but what is that going to prove? Nothing.
Haha, don't believe you. The future is not in the E-mount........
1.5x vs 1.8x on eos r. I think the xt3 is around 1.8x crop when shooting 4k60
TJ Israelsen nope, the X-T3 is 1.18x or 1.2x crop (if you would rather round up)
@@TonyAurum yeah, on top of a 1.5x crop for apsc vs full frame
🙌🏻
You think the image looks sharp?
Sure, but thats a completely different price point camera.I'm sure the EOS R is an amazing camera for photography, but for video, lacks too many features.
haha yah , sony a7iii and fuji xt3 looks so good , and who the hell buying camera only because color science XD . if we talking about 600 euro camera yes . canon m50 is the king XD
That cropped 1080p is supersampled according to a rep. Look at how detailed and clear it is on his face going from full frame to cropped at 13:25
Matti, I appreciate your feedback on this.
Alec Bailey and Matti Haapoja I was glad to see Matti say some things he didn't like as well as what he does like.
Shadeing peter mckinnon not cool
@Ariel Hernandez Not throwing shade at him at all. Didn't once mention his name. RUclips is full of reviews of this camera.
Why don't you try out Nikon Z7 or Z6? These cameras have good colors, IBIS and can film at 4K without crop and at 1080p 120 fps.
I’m curious to see if Canon will release another high level DSLR ever again, or if the future of cameras is all mirrorless with their new lens system. A 5Dv or 1DXiii would be interesting.
They were supposed to have released the 7D Mark III DSLR by now. I'm wondering if they ever will.
Matti Surprised you didn't notice the EF-S lenses would crop but this is an excellent way to get the wide angle on the 4k, in my opinion.
Ankit Bhatia absolutely agree.
I hate weeding out bias. I didn’t get that feeling with his Fuji xt3 review at all.

@@ophatjb facts bro
Wow, the cropped comparison really is mindblowing.
You know, the c300 has a super35 (aps-c) sized sensor, right?
In what way are Canon cameras more reliable in terms of image quality than Sony cameras? That sounds pretty baseless to me.
Matt, thanks for the in-depth review and for actually showing the differences in features (such as the 60 fps and the 1.7x crop in 4k). I'm investing soon in a travel project on my own, and you and Peter have been my top inspirations. I've been trying to decide between the 6D Mark II and the EOS R but now I think I've decided on the EOS R.
wow the colors really pop in that intro sequence. Maybe canon color is really as good as they say.
Yea I was starting to second guess it myself also but man it’s just so easy to work with 🙌🏻
Colours don't pop right outta the camera tho, you gotta grade them 😀
I really have a hard time grading on Sony's footage sometimes
TheCreativeAnimation you’ve got to set your profiles to ‘fix’ the Sony rendering before you start.
I just like that they don't have fluorescent colors sometimes like sony
If you need a more modern, sharp, clean look, go with Sony.
i was about to pull the trigger on this camera but i dont see how it can be excused over a Sony A7
I notice what I would call heavy vignetting in your moving videos using this camera.
Is that post processing by you, the fault of the lens or camera.?
Nd filter at 16mm will usually vignette pretty hard. But yea it’s the nd filter
Loved this review Matti - prompted me to buy one 👍🏻
Would you mind me asking what the intro music is for the first minute, as my family loves it but I keep having to keep rewinding and replaying it 😂
The 1080p looks so soft that it looks out of focus.. Hopefully they don't cripple their higher end mirrorless, whenever they release that.
The problem with all these youtube reviews is that they didn't have to pay for the camera. If you paid 5k for this camera/lens would you still be ok with all the shortcomings? I doubt it.
the majority of youtube reviews are basically adverts and few are honest about it
@@thisandthat1233 Yes very true, we have a number of exceptions though: the Northrups, for example, or at least they pretend very smartly that they are independent.
I have no interest in video so it's hard to find a review that just tells me what the still image quality is like.
haha i was thinking the same. like... wtf? this is photo camera! it's really annoying
Haha. I love how even though I don’t know much about cameras and had no idea what you were talking about half the time, I still couldn’t stop watching. I love your videos. You’re doing great! Any tips for beginner vloggers?
sweet 🤙🏻 thx
Well said
That's right the filter only works on thier adapted lenses but not with their native ones...That's crazy. Even Canon M50 is still better value than this camera.
I also don't really like to support for a company that only depends on their brand rather than innovation.
What cheap beginner sony cam can you suggest for me to get first? I'm a beginner and I'm just starting to figure things out with these camera brands and stuff.
a6000
So I am stuck between the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7 III.
Which lens did you use? I think that having the Digital IS engaged softened the video for me. Did you have it initialized in your test?
I saw exactly the same thing...no sure why the image was so soft or was it out of focus for some reason.
@@karhen685 its the camera its really that bad as everyone is saying.
This exactly what Sean Tucker has explained.
you can adjust the sharpness in the settings:)) like Matti said... give it a try.
Kind of a downer for not being able to record in 60fps with a crop lens... weird issue. Still holding off until about January hoping Canon comes out with firmware that resolves a lot of things wanted or hopefully maybe a new camera to come out with the old joystick/wheel instead of that touch switch
I plan to rent one next year as it has a lot of what I like but as well as a lot of stuff I have now with older cameras that it does not... :/
Would rather have the new GoPro than that camera for vlogging. It is not a good camera for filmmaking when there is so many better options out there. So many folks trying there best to justify it as a good camera, when in reality it come up way short of the mark.
There’s a camera for everyone 😊 but have you tried it? If you have I’d love to hear why you didn’t like using it?
Talk about Nikon z7!!! No one is talking about that camera except for Caleb Pike
Send me one please Nikon!
@@mattih damn 💔
I'm looking at the Nikon Z6...better low light performance than the Z7. I never thought I'd consider Nikon after its bad reputation for video, but they've stepped up their game. People dismissed this camera because of only one card slot but really I think I like it more than the Sony A7iii. Maybe the next iteration of the Canon EOS R will have what we're looking for. I would definitely pay extra for that.
OrganicFarmer focus mate. If you dont nail focus your shot is toast.
I think I would still prefer the SL2
So stoked to get mine next week when it finally lands at Canon Finland 🤘
P.s. did you use the 16-35 f4 IS or f2.8? I tried it with the f4 but one thing I didn't try was the 2.8 with the digital stabilizer. Wondering if it's worth the extra stop and losing a bit of the frame in the crop.
Look how insanly soft the video from the EOS R is compared to Sony A73 during the color/saturation comparison @ 14:56. Many reviewers have claimed that the 4K footage from EOS R has nowhere near acceptable sharpness and detail-level and i can see why. That's awful. Doesn't look like there's any detail past 1080p :/
The EOS R really is the biggest turd released this year.
Shut up sony fanboi
I have to agree im not an expert when it's about fimmaking but I have to say I do like the colors in the eos r more but I think in this comparison the sharpness of the Sony a7 iii is much better im thinking about either getting the Sony or the canon as my first camera
SHOULD I GET THE CANON EOS R OR THE CANON 90D FOR FILMING MUSIC VIDEOS?
Buy the EOSR
Imo: XT-3 destroys it.
You did a very good review, the biggest question is are you buying this camera with those expensive lenses if canon didn’t gave you for free? Because free stuff had different feeling than buying stuff. Thank you again and I really like your videos
no ibis, no HD 120fps, mega crop on 4k.......... 2300 dols for the body... OMG --- come back next year
Well said
the canon images do not look very sharp. i love canon but in the three side y side still frames the canon was soft. wonder if it is focus problem or the crop in 4k
Oh man I can’t wait to try it!
Me too! Got a lot of canon glass as well as the AMAZING Sigma 18-35. Cant wait!
hi , i am thinking to take a cinema camera ... for shooting a demo film for presentation . Can you suggest me a mid range cine camera .
Background plant game on point!
Hahaha 😂
Lol, on fleek!
The 4k looks soft AF.
you can adjust the sharpness in the settings:)) knowing your gear is key, even if your camera is a spec monster ;)
Dude. Do you have any thoughts on the new Black Magic Pocket?
all I hear is "nice" and "really"
What about the quality of the lenses? What about the quality of de stills?
Such a great honest review. I felt that Peter's review was kinda biased and praising the camera too much but you give your best true opinion the good the bad. Pros and cons.
Awesome work Matti! Peace :)
Hate the touch bar on my macbook and I hated the touch pad on the eos r. Call me old school but I like the tactile clicks.
Great video! 👏 Your really use the world "really" a lot 😅 or have you always been using that word as much but you emphasized it more in this video?😉
Really? Hmmm really?
Matti Haapoja Nice! lol
true that!
"The image is REALLY nice" x200
Sums up the review
Then "If you don't need this, if you don't need that if if if if... it's ok"
Isn't that 'lens cover' in front of the sensor the shutter itself?
Canon did send you a free camera.. crop in a little bit.. Hehe. You said nice 50 times.
maybe because there are not a lot to say
haha..
I swear all the top youtube creators got paid to say NICE things about the eos r lol
It probably said so in the contract lol! 😂
Cheers
JT
Super cool to hear your thoughts man! It’s interesting to see reaction to specs vs actually trying it in real life. Cause I went through the same thing
Modern Slice how compromised aee you ?
Haha amazing 🙌🏻 such a good book
Is there any speed-booster in the making by Canon and will that help solve the crop issue?
that intro tho! looks like a footage from some awesome hollywood movie! also great review.
Haha thank you 😊
Matt, do you feel small cameras like the gopros and dji action cameras are better for real everyday recording? Big cameras are too much to carry
all your B-roll is the same nowadays lol
I kinda do that on purpose for the reviews so you can compare what cameras look like in the same areas
Matti Haapoja Oh I see, that makes sense!
Hi Matti, Love your channel and would love a similar look to your opening sequence so wondered if you could confirm which LUT was used from which pack, please? I'll probably but both but would love to know which one is it please :)
No Full-Fanboi-Mode like Peter, thank you!
Canon really needs to come out with a full frame camera that does 1080 120p, 4k non crop, ibis with good bitrate, a flip screen and they'll be back on top.
That would cost like $10,000 and above
