I considered switching from Canon to Sony (Alpha 7iii) based on all those negative reviews. Then I tested both the Sony as well as the Canon EOS R (because I thought I should at least get the R as the RP isn’t good enough) and also the RP. I got my RP yesterday and can only say, not only is it amazing (absolutely fine dynamic range and noise level, images are fabulous), I am also very glad that I did not pick up the Sony after having tested it (and a college also bought one). The feeling, usability, and everything are just so much better from my point of view on the canon and spending more on the R really wasn’t worth it considering the prize difference. The RP offer sich a good package for a great prize and all that in a very small and light case. Of course there is no perfect camera out there. Most RUclips testers are looking at cameras from a movie recording perspective, but most buyers don’t care for that feature. The Sony (which many RUclipsrs consider to be the only thing to get ) is good for videos, and it’s a great camera from Sony but no camera is perfect. If you visit forums or talk to people who actually use all those cameras or own them, you often get a complete different experience as to what you find on RUclips or similar channels. So now that I actually bought and tested the RP I am really glad with this purchase and can only say it’s so much better than what many RUclipsrs said. And now many suddenly revert and are actually positive about it... In the end I learned again to better test things myself and that some specs on paper don’t tell the whole story. Once you actually use a product it also comes down to many more aspects like how usable it is, and how many thoughts for even small things where put into it, that positively impact the day to day use of it. Those things are hard to test and can only be experienced by really using it and discovering all those details in certain situations. Cameras these days are already on such a high level, what is considered „bad“ these days may have been the most „pro“ thing yesterday. Unless you are a real professional who often faces edge cases where you really need to squeeze out the absolute best of your equipment , you may never need or notice those differences in like eg dynamic range and others. If you are interested in buying a new camera, regardless of brand. I recommend going out there into a store and test it or even rent it to check it out in a realistic environment. Having some small extra features, 10% more dynamic range, or extra pixels is worthless if the whole camera just doesn’t fit you and your work. Each camera has its advantages and disadvantages, find the one that fits your workflow and remember that there is not perfect System out there, everything has negative points too.
Yeah, it happened with 5D mark iv and 6D mark ii as well. They were supposed to be terrible based on reviews but yet, I thought they were great. Like you said, there's no camera on the market today that just inherently takes bad pictures. But my complaints about the RP wasn't actually the image quality, but I felt like if you need an affordable full frame camera for photos, you could just get a used 5D mark i, ii, or a 6D mark i for less than half of the price of the RP. For paying $1300 you get a smaller mirrorless camera which can be beneficial to some people but I think in about a year or two, the price will go down, more affordable native lenses will be available, so it will be a much more complete package.
I tell people constantly, a camera is more than a spec-sheet. People seem to completely ignore UX design, interface, lens selection, body design ,ergonomics etc. All because of Dynamic Range, Autofocus points and other technical metrics. A technically brilliant camera isnt worth anything if it's not enjoyable or encouraging to use. I've used all 3 big FF MILC's now (Z6, EOS R and A7III) and between them I'd rate the Sony the best technically ,but the worst ergonomically. I'd rate the Nikon best in terms of ergonomics and controls. But I'd rate the EOS R the best when it comes to lens selection. Like you stated, I'd highly encourage everybody to rent all 3 if you are serious about buying one of them, and make up your own mind. You are totally correct in saying that what we call "bad" today (Like the EOS RPs sensor performance on a technical level) is still amazing and takes great photos.
@@HyunRalphJeong I have been in that ballpark. Sure, I got great images out of the EOS 5D classic, in good light that is. Some fantastic colors. By stating, "get a used 5D mk1" etc, you completely ignore the modern aspect of the RP or nowadays cameras for the target group - EVF, the benefits are obvious, "see what you get" is revolutionary - High ISO performance, with lens and all things equal you get more keepers in low light scenarios - Dual pixel AF and Eye AF, for portraits, again revolutionary - Ease of use, transfer and share the images taken in an instant, wifi, bluetooth to your phone, Snapseed them away to social media - A screen you can rely on and actually use (the 5D mk1 screen is garbage, and you have to rely on the histogram) - SD instead of old CF cards and CF readers - Old camera price is around 200-500 USD, if shutter counts are ignored (only Canon service can read 5D Mk1) it could break in an instant and your hard earned, saved, cash is now gone - Heavy body with spongy buttons What type of EVF (millions of colors or hz), grade of high ISO performance or DR are past the diminishing of returns for most people and only matched upon user based workflow, then the incremental improvements are "worth it". Mk1, 2 etc are truly great side cameras, as I see them. This is the reason I sold my Mk1 and I'm now on the hunt for either a RP or the R.
sold my Fujifilm X-T3 for the EOS RP. I shoot stills. don't care much about video. maybe i'll catch my kid running for action. wanted the better low light and lenses from canon.
I love that you tested for a while and gave an honest review on it. Certain cameras are meant for certain people, and different events. Love this. Thanks for sharing.
I just got an RP. I came from a Rebel T5. I got it with a 24-105 rf because i wanted a really nice native lens. In the future I believe Canon will be making really good RF lenses so that is why I decided to stick with Canon and the RP vs a A7II.
@@c200d45e95 it's great! The low light performance is a lot better and af is superior in every way. I just wish I had more money to by a 14mm Rokinon or 85mm RF. They battery life for me is pretty good. Hope you enjoy the RP as much as I do. Also the 24-105 is Soo sharp! Its definitely favorite lens right now.
RP is a great camera for its price. Though 24-105 RF (or EF) lens is not really impressive at all. 24-70 EF or 28-70 RF is great but very expensive, Buy used prime 50mm 1.4 EF (for $200) or 85mm EF and you will get the best image for tiny budget.
EVEEEEEEERY TIME Canon announces a camera it’s the same thing, all people say they are disappointed but when they try them finally it’s really good. It’s really funny .. and honestly people talk about video but how many will use 4K ? ... 1% . So 🤷🏻♂️ Nice video 👌🏻 and sorry for my english ^^
I bought an RP as well. It is great tho. I love it. It has great colors and I did some astrophotography and it looks amazing. I did some portraits. Looks amazing. Did some landscapes, looks amazing. I don't give two craps about 4k video. And i can also record in 25fps and drop a frame so meh. Also, I love the ergonomics and the large viewfinder. Also the screen is bright and looks good. I am a happy RP owner.
Hahaha I love your perspective. We are not going to fix world hunger, yes sir! This is a review, and it’s your review. And we appreciate and respect your opinion. Cameras are personal, I (Maria) prefer dslr and Lieles mirrorless What we can say it’s that after hearing you comparing and reviewing the features of this camera, is that for us is not with it. And we thank you for being honest and upfront
That's the great thing in being a tech reviewer..... We read the specs and automatically assume the product is not what I want. Not what I need.. But once we have it in hand.. It's a different story ..glad you decide to purchase the camera and give it a test
@@HyunRalphJeong I really want to get one. Affordable full frame, mirrorless (I don't think it's worth buying DSLRs anymore), and essentially native EF mount. I just want to make sure it really is worth getting. I'm an intermediate level photographer looking to get my first mirrorless and my first full frame, so I think it makes sense.
I failed at transitioning from DSLR (6D) to MILC (RP) the first time. I got annoyed that it didn’t work like a DSLR and sold it. I just bought another RP and have committed to actually learn the features seriously this time. I never found face detection and tracking very useful before but I just set up C1 with settings you suggested (face tracking/Servo/center focus point). I think it might work, especially when I do events. Being away from the RP for a year makes me appreciate it’s features - though I still love my DSLRs. For low light events, an RP/6D combo is going to work very well.
How do you find the RP in real world, low light events? I have a 6D mk1 and think it does really well at this kind of work. I am ised to mirrorless so i miss seeing my exposure in the viewfinder on the 6D. Not a big deal but it does make things more enjoyable. Many thanks.
I ended up selling it and getting a second 6D. For events, having identical cameras that you can operate without thinking - in the dark - was more important. Plus, moving the focus point - or even finding where it wandered off to, was a pain. Face tracking chose the wrong face often. And the bigger issue is that faster L lens are very, very expensive. I got a 6D mark ii on Black Friday and that is a great camera - for me. I do occaisionally miss the RP - but not that much.
@@kevinl1492 Thankyou. I have ordered a cheap, used RP but i’m hanging onto the 6D. I am only a keen hobbyist so workflow isn’t essential like a working pro. I do love the 6D and it’s output but i find working with an EVF enjoyable. Thanks for the info! 👍
Thanks for the focusing tips for one handed shooting! As someone who is a recently new RP owner (who has only one really good hand) this was invaluable knowledge for me. Coming from a Nikon D7000 I really am liking this camera. The things I miss most are the dual card slots and the ability to name my files.
Divine Art If a company doesn’t have a marketing strategy they would make one camera at one price. They would concede the rest of the price points to other companies. Not a practical business plan.
Just got an RP about 2 weeks ago (upgraded from a Canon M5) and I love it so far. I may miss the burst speed as my daughter does horseback riding but the focus system is better so my hit rate is better, low light is way better, although small it's balanced better with my 24-105f4 than the M5, and I have a pile of batteries as it uses the same one. The faster processor also means it sends images to my phone way faster and I love that it can send them in real time (although this does time out or go to sleep or something somewhat frequently). And got it on sale with the adapter for less than $1000 Canadian!
It never about the camera it's about the photograph and for what I need to do its perfect. I need full frame marriorless for portraits and this will fit my budget. Plus the lenses are awesome I need them in my life.
FYI with Sony A73 the rear LCD is polarized the opposite way which I hated. So portrait was ok but standard landscape mode was not. If you put an LCD cover on it then it should work both ways which was the work around for my Sony but on the RP since the LCD can be twisted back in no need for a cover.
Can believe there's so much drama over a camera. Haha I think you're at least trying to post the right questions in terms of the target market and purpose. Very nice review.
After looking into upgrading to FF I decided to stick with APS-C as in most situations you cannot really tell the difference. Also I am not sold on the advantages of mirrorless, one of the big drawbacks is that the sensors are much more prone to dust spots.
I'm looking at the rp as a light travel camera to grab when I head out the door for more casual shooting even just for my instagram. Maybe grab a video clip here or there but mainly for photography. I just wish canon would release more consumer grade rf lenses and I'd love to see them release 1.8 primes for it.
@@HyunRalphJeong That's pretty much what I'm looking at. Altough I think I'll just get the 85 to go with the 35 rf and maybe the 24 2.8 to keep things light.
@Edgar G. I really don't know what I'm looking for as far as an upgrade. I know I want a camera that flips open. Good quality than what I have. I'm leaning towards canon, lumix or a sony camera. But im just trying save money.
At 9:46 "Just understand that this is an entry level camera and you're not going to win any awards with it".... Really?? I think it's unfair to lead people into thinking they need an expensive pro level camera to win awards. An award goes to the actual photo, not the camera it was taken with. Pro cameras don't necessarily take better pictures; they are usually more robust and faster. They have shutters built for heavy duty use, bigger batteries, dual card slots, weather sealing, etc. But picture quality is not that different. I am a Sony user. (I only shoot stills). I have an A73 and A6400. I love them both. However I end up going out mostly with the A6400, just because its lighter. It's all about weight when I'm walking with a camera all day. So I've recently added an EOS RP + 35/1.8 to my collection and I appreciate having full-frame in such a light package. My attitude towards cameras is not to obsess with what each one does and doesn't do, but instead to work out its plus points and decide if I need them for my working style. In the case of the RP, its strengths are it's weight (for a FF camera), simple menu system (compared to Sony), touch screen and colour science. It's capable of taking incredible images - that could definitely win awards. I enjoyed your review. Thanks.
Great tips. How did I miss the Initial AP point - thanks for that. I bought the RP soon as it came out and also have the 6D2 and owned the 6D for 4 years. Love the RP for travel.
It will be a great travel camera. I initially thought it would be great to use with my EOS R but small differences in the menu are actually kind of confusing me.
Likely buying it. Shoot 5d4 but want a lighter travel/hiking setup. I’m hoping they also come out with RF f4 lenses too similar to Nikon’s which are 500grams.
Nathan Prachnau Surprisingly getting tons of comments from 5D mark iv owners haha. Yeah wish they had more smaller native lenses but won’t happen this year
I am saving for this camera. My main reasons being the ergonomics, price, and the glass available for it. I don’t shoot video. I want a light full frame for street, family, portraits, and some landscape. Great video!
Really liking this series on the eos rp. Extremely comprehensive. Weird about the sunglasses going dark. Will you ever do a Sony or Nikon camera review? Great job as always.
Good review Ralph. I agree woth you. This is really more photograhy. Its really not a bad camera it just depends on what you are goin to use it. That eye glasses going black was interesting lol. Im looking for a camera to use in photograpny that is not too expensive.😊👍
I do think people have an opinion without using the camera. I have a 6D mark 2. Yes another hated camera. I was considering a Mirrorless, but just can’t justify the price hike! For an all round camera that does everything good, the 6D is just really good. WHY? Cost: it is now very competitive and a lot cheaper than the “R” which I have been looking at, Yes Sony make some good stuff but native lens are expensive, + lacks the selfie screen which is really good for vlogging, food and low high filming. Weight: yes the mirrorless are light, but the 6D mark 2 is either very close or lighter when fitted with lenses. The “R” lens are heavy and even if you use the adapter, this pushes the camera over the weight of the 6D mark 2. The sony is only slightly lighter. Colour grading: For people who don’t want to colour grade, the jpeg colours are so natural and this makes editing quicker Lens EF lens are easy to come by and have some very good lens options at good prices. 4K Doing 4K properly uses lots of data and processing, I think this is for top end professional photographers, bit rate I find is more important, but if uploading to social media they compress the footage anyway. So how good really does the camera video have to be? I find the 1080p footage downloaded from my editor at the highest bit rate, looks excellent. The RP with the adapter? What is the weight? Is it much lighter than the 6D mark 2. So why go mirrorless, yes it offers a EVF view finder, which is handy and better lens (at a price) but for the hobbist/vlogger, who is not professional, I still see the 6D mark 2 as a very competitve camera
I shoot 5D, 5D2, 3 and 4. I bought the RP because I was going overseas and wanted a backup body to my 5DM4 that was light and could take my EF lenses. I didn't consider the R version but once I got to playing around with the RP I was sold...the fact that ANY point on the sensor can be a focus point would be why I'd switch to this line completely and give up all my 5Ds. I wish, wish, wish there was a programable back wheel that could be used in conjunction with the index finger wheel to allow me to move the focus point while the camera is to my eye (I shoot through the viewfinder). I can use my thumb on the back screen with the camera to my eye but my hands are quite small so I have to work a bit harder than I'd like to get it where I want it. It's a great little full frame camera and well worth a look.
I've got a question about this camera that nobody was able to answer me yet: how does the adapter works for EF-S lenses? Is there any clipping factor applied to the resultant picture, or quality loss of some kind if compared with a native APS-C camera?
Meneillos with photos, it works just like they would on an aps-c camera. For example if you attach a 10mm EF-S lens to it, it will look like 16mm. Since it’s cropping from a 26mp sensor, there will be considerable loss in resolution. Hope this helps
@@HyunRalphJeong Thanks for answering! So the common 1,6 focal factor. But, regarding resolution, how much the loss would be? Down to 22 mp, or less? Does the extreme vignette shown when using extension tubes appear with this converter as well?
I got the RP for three main reasons: 1) I wanted something smaller for travel photography but better than a smartphone, 2) I got the 7D when it came out and so the RP 'fits like a glove', 3) I have a kit bag full of EF lenses and these fit with the adaptor so I don't have to go out and rebuild my lens bag. I don't really want to use it for video so any video-related negatives are minor for me. So after actually using it for some months I am enjoying it and am thinking its a pretty good camera. You will need a couple of extra batteries and I would recommend going online to get all the setting setup correct.
Purchased the Canon EOS PR and matched up with a Tamron 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD lens and now enjoy taking photos again. Image quality is excellent and, best of all, all of the features of the Canon RP work with the Tamron lens including all the video formats. The camera fully recognizes then lens and has built in correction factors that you can enable. I purchased the Canon RP before seeing this review and the review is spot on. I am not a professional photographer but like a higher end camera for vacations. This camera and lens combination gives me the flexibility I was looking for. Like any camera, it will take a bit to learn all it can do. I have read the entire manual so at least I know what the camera is capable. Only downside I have encountered is that the macro, portrait, and landscape presets are a submenu of the CSN dial making it had to quickly change from one mode to. the next. There are three programable positions on the top dial that I will read up on and try to program to be equal to the macro, portrait, and landscape features. So far I am impressed with the overall build quality and the weight. The full sensor is a must. First time I have been able to take a 70m photo of the dog, then zoom in on his eye utilizing Photos and see the reflection of the house in the eye. Very cool.
10:53 very impressive (that you sited all the specs in one take). I do love full frame but my current dslr body is getting really old and my A6000 isn't full frame. I only have 2 lenses for my Sony so it wouldn't be too much of a transition for me to switch. I will have to look into Sony A7ii - which seems to be going for around 1100.
So many reviews indicate you can't use this camera for wildlife. Why not? Is it the AF or slow continuous shooting? What am I missing here. A new firmware update has improved AF so that's a bonus. I am considering a purchase with the RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS, so lots of things to consider.
Technically, you can use any camera to do pretty much anything. The only downside I can think of is the slow framerate but that depends on what you're shooting.
@@HyunRalphJeong Thanks for the quick response. I just wanted to know why this was indicated and you confirmed my thoughts. I will make sure the wildlife are standing still. LOL
I’ve had the same issue of the screen going black on the rear view screen with polarized sunglasses. Other than that I’ve just moved up from optical viewfinders and I find it a lot better to use the one on the RP especially the fact that I’m able to use my thumb on the view screen to move the focus point around while looking through the viewfinder.
Thank you for this video. I'm gonna keep my 6D mark I and pickup the RP (later this year) instead of just getting the R. Main reason I'm afraid of breaking/losing a camera body that is ~$2000. Also gives me an extra $1000 for more glass which probably matters the most. I find the m50+gimbal more than enough for video needs.
Hey Hyun!! That's so cool that you spent a bunch of time digging more into this camera. We use a GoPro when we record our videos and just add extra light sources. We haven't really considered any other type of camera for what we do! If we have any questions though… We know who to ask! Played in full and so nice to meet you!
I bought it on March as an enhancement of my 700D and 7D2 and my all Canon Eco System. All my EF and EF-S lenses are working. And with this price it was an good enhancement and entry into the full frame world. For me it was a very good DSLM I really like.
Meinte Holl Yes. Definitely! For me it is an combination of the best features of the 700D (my wife’s favorite) and the 7D2 (my favorite). The handling is very similar to the 700D and very easy to use. My wife also very comfortable with the RP other as with the 7D2. If you change from your 700D to full frame. I recommend the RP as your starting point especially with this price point. And After 3 month of using the RP I am always satisfied with it. www.irista.com/gallery/9gk1eln5ma6y a few pictures with the RP.
I just got the RP myself. its an upgrade for me coming from the t7i. the only problem i have is, my Tamrom 70-200 2.8 does not work with it. it will only work in manual focus. The auto focus is not compatible. So look out for that if you are thinking about buying one of these and planning on using 3rd party lenses. not all of them will work.
Thanks for making this video. I had no idea about the initial spot + servo trick and that really takes me back to DSLR framing, which is great. I really enjoyed that way of framing. Also, tracking is SO great! Thanks again for the video :).
Great review! You really did a great job with a nuanced approach to this camera. I’ve been recommending the camera to many people and I’m a Sony shooter. It’s a perfect camera for many people.
Louis Luzuka there’s a big difference in focus accuracy. Unless it’s user error, the camera basically does not miss. This isn’t inherent to the RP, but more so mirrorless technology in general. Not having to micro adjust your lenses is huge. Weight difference and not having to chimp from shot to shot is also a major benefit. EF lenses are performing perfectly.
@@LouisLuzuka if you're a stills shooter already invested in Canon and you don't shoot sports or wildlife, the RP is a no-brainer. The battery is small, but I find I don't need to take as many shots to get the picture I want due to the EVF so 400-450 shots with more keepers is actually pretty good. I also picked up 2 extra batteries for $24.
I have an 80D and I predominately use vintage lenses with an adapter (including Canon FD lenses). I am glad to find out that the RP has Focus Peaking but it does not have the Manual Focus Assist of the R. While I will get RF lenses at some point once I choose, I am placing a premium on the MFA assuming it allows me to jury rig a vintage lens on an EF adapter to the RF adapter for non FD lenses and there appears to be an FD to RF adapter out there (the electronics does not matter). Have you explored this issue? There is great vintage glass that lets me customize the captured image by simply changing the lens. I just need the assist in focusing and I am not sure how the Rs will do it.
I bought an RP because I'm coming from an EOS 30D from 2007, so anything is going to be much better than what I have now. However, after shooting with a friend's 6D I decided that I like full-frame a lot better, and I wanted a lighter camera to take with me more places. So, I spent a little extra and picked up the RP instead of an 80D for the full frame, and chose the RP over the 6D2 because of size. Being able to use my current EF lenses but also the upcoming RF lenses makes more sense to me as well.
Thanks for the review. I am a current MFT owner and seriously thinking of moving up to FF. I am now considering Canon EOS RP and Sony a7iii but leaning towards Canon. My main concern is the lack of affordable native lenses on the RF mount. Now waiting for the upcoming 24-105 mm f4-7.1. However, I mainly use 25 mm lens on MFT (50 mm equivalent on FF) for 90% of my shots, so actually just thinking of RP+EF 50 mm/f1.8 (with adapter), and use 24-105/f4-7.1 as a back up and for videos.
I am kinda new to photography buy I am considering going for an EOS R instead of the RP. I think you get a lot of features for difference in price. (I really want weather sealing, but also a better sensor, the better screen and EVF). And I think it's a better investment, going for the RF glass and this camera (EOS R). Even if I don't get that much into photography and plan to sell the gear later, I think it will keep a better value. I know that I could go for EF glass instead but it can be a gamble buying used.
Adrian-Alexandru Neculcea If you have the budget for it, the R is a better camera. I probably buy 80% of lenses used. I never had issues and when I do, ebay’s pretty good at getting me refunds. And then I can re-sell them for the same amount or more when I don’tneed them anymore :)
Hyun Ralph Jeong Considering where I live, ebay stuff are a big gamble for me, due to transport, especially glass. And budget wise, I would rather save up and don’t waste money on stupid things and invest in something that I have a passion for. And it’s worth the money. And maybe a future job. #investinyourself.
Ah, I left the camera at home today so I won't be able to try it until later, but I'm not sure if the RP even supports HSS. What kind of flash are you using? and are you using a trigger? or mounted on camera?
excellent presentation Hyun... my daughter moved up to the RP from the T1i as it was full frame, and she can use her EF Lens. It was a wise move, i think, because she'll be upgrading to RF Lens system, and it didn't make sense to spend a lot of money on a body (which will be obsolete by the time she's completed her lens compliment, and ready for a serious/professional body. So, cost and upgrade plan was why she went that way.
Could be a dumb question here: if I have some decent canon glass, care nothing for video, shoot headshots and portraits semi-professionally, and have been on them 5Dii for years... would this be an upgrade for me?
Jeffrey Hawkins Hi, unless you really need a mirrorless body and better low light performance, not really, but It’s nice having eye/face detection in close range.
I just bought this as my first proper camera for shooting 24fps HD video with the drop-in ND filter EF lens mount and Tamron 24-70 mark i. First impressions are that it's great. I recognise it has limitations but since the price drop and the firmware update, it does what I think I need it to do. Time will tell! For me, it's a nice bonus that it takes great stills. Will be able to take some family portraits on my next visit home. Nice little advantage.
Still a APSC Having about 7years I liked to upgrade to full frame. . Can you suggest me whether I choose 6d or EOS R or RP mainly focused on landscape and street photos including people on frame
What camera are you upgrading from? If you want something smaller and lighter, and if you're okay with using an adapter, the RP might be a good option. The R probably won't be worth extra $1000 at this point. If you are okay with a bigger camera and you want better battery life, the 6D or the 6D mark ii might be better.
Oh, I like your realistic angle of reviewing ! I’m a Eos M6 shooter and looking to maybe get a RP, but every reviewer seems to focus on vlogging or just getting the most expensive of feature-packed gadgets...
I believe this camera is aimed at Rebel series shooters who want to upgrade to full frame and mirrorless. I have a Rebel series Canon and this one would give me better low light performance, EVF, using the EF lenses as native, without crop factor and getting greater DoF. I already have 2 extra batteries for my APS-C camera, so with the one the camera comes with, I will have 3, which is plenty. In short - for me, the RP would mean better image quality, no learning curve (since all the menus and buttons are pretty much the same), and lowest possible price to move to FF and use the EF lenses I already have anyway. How is all that a bad deal at $1300?
You'll feel right at home with this camera. The fact that Canon decided to use the same small battery makes a lot of sense for people upgrading from Rebel series cameras.
In Denmark it was only the adapter included. No grip, and no date for availability for the grip. I got the 5dmk4 with ef 24-105mm F4L lens, for the same price as rp with rf 24-105mm F4L lens.
thanks for a perfect unbiased review, I bought RP body switching from 6d, I am so happy with my first full frame mirrorless , my most important and reason to switch on a mirrorless camera with articulated LCD screen , I have both eyes with cataract surgery done but unfortunately some temporary blurry ness due to some medical issues, I find this continuously on LCD makes perfect for me while shooting interiors and fixed model shots in studio set up. LCD is giving plenty of information without straining my eye.And without breaking my bank .I am happy to use my old 6d 24-105/f4 kit lens ,70-300 f4 canon zoom without any issue with adapter . Since I am not doing sports at all other issues do not effect me. Last year I gifted my daughter with Canon M50 kit and I was really impressed with the quality in budget .My daughter does lot of Vblog etc and she cant move without it.
Hyun Ralph Jeong i shoot vlogs, for portraits I shoot mostly on my d700 i was going to get an a7s or 6d for video but I saw this and eos R or a7iii I just have a lot of efs lenses that’s all
Louis Luzuka the flip out screen is definitely useful for vlogging. And you can’t beat Canon’s dual pixel autofocus. 2 weeks ago, I would have suggested the 6D mark ii, but I think I’m liking the RP more.
You can absolutely win wards with that camera. It’s better than the cameras that were winning all the awards 10yrs ago. They are just tools people. The RP is an outstanding camera and great value.
I took this camera as my secondary camera for shooting activities in my local park, I think it's not as bad as people seem to think for sports. Off course it's not by any means a fast camera, but, if you get a hang of it (you know, anticipating the movement instead of gatling gun the shit out of the action), you absolutely can use it for sports, to think about it, 15 years ago, this is a fast camera, if they can get excellent shots with a slower camera back then, well, it means you CAN too.
Aldo Susanto yeah, my favorite camera of all time is still the 5D mark i. We get spoiled by new technologies but once you get used to it, there’s really no such thing as a bad camera nowadays
I actually just ordered an EOS RP because I have some full frame EF lenses already. However I've gotten most of my L lenses for my 5D Mark II. So I would have liked something full frame for vlogging considering this has a flip out screen and autofocus in video. This paired with my EF 16-35mm F/2.8 seems just like what I'm looking for, its a lighter full frame camera I can use my lenses on for some video. I'll probably keep using my 5DII as a second body and for panning shots on cars though. It's not nearly as fast as recent cameras, but I still got very good results with my 70-200mm IS f/2.8
Almost 2 years after this video, I have been enjoying for some time going out with my RP and one or a few prime lenses, for walking around photography. It complements the 90D in permitting the full use of the primes. And going out with the 2 bodies and 2 lenses, is like having 4 focal lengths. A 24mm and an 85mm make an interesting pairing.
I notices someone below in same situation as myself. I have the 6d mk1 and would like a camera thats have similar photo quality, better af and af video. So is the RP a good upgrade to the 6d mk1?
Nice review!! So if You would need to choose whitch camera to buy: Sony a7ii or Canon RP whitch one would You prephere? In my case i like old manual lenses and at this moment have no any lenses from Sony or Canon, cause I am the nikon user in the past shooting landscapes and portrets). ?
I have a comparison here: ruclips.net/video/pba1yifZQ2M/видео.html With the lenses, it just depends on what mount they are and you need to find which adapter you need but Sony is probably more flexible for that.
I have a lot of m43 gear and a Fuji X-100V plus a like new 5DMkII. I like the canon colour better then Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji. I have a full bunch of old good lenses, the 24-105 F4 Kit lens, a 16-35 f2.8 and a lot of nikon AF-D lenses a set of Mamiya glasses plus an amazing canon FD 28mm f2.0 which I cannot adapt at all on the 5D. What I really miss is focus peaking so that I can manual focus with confidence like I do on my m43 but without the crop. Last week I went in a camera store and I handled the R, the RP and the Z6 side by side and, surprisingly, despite me having quite large hands, I feel more comfortable with the RP, which has a deeper grip, because the body is actually slimmer. I don't even need the grip extension I think. I'll get the RP as soon as the EF adapter will be available in the shop and they offered me, if I want, to buy the "wheel" adapter just adding 100€ and giving back the standard one in the box. I think in a week I'll get it and report back. I don't think I'll be let down by the image quality if it is even similar to my 5DMkII
I currently have a 6D Mark 1and shoot mostly low light band photos in clubs or models in varying light. Would the RP be a good upgrade or addition, especially for the low light concert photos?
I shoot a lot of bands performing in fairly low light in clubs. I currently have the Canon 6D mark 1. Would you recommend the 6D Mark ii or the RP for low light focusing and image quality to 6400 ISO? I can't afford the R or 5D Mark IV.
I just purchased this camera with the grip attachment and the ef lens adapter I think this camera looks great and very affordable I was going to get the eos r but after doing research I was sold on the rp and now it's on the way in the mail and I purchased extra batteries as well as a USB so I can attach it to a dummy battery
Also im a filmmaker and im going to be using this camera for my short films I've been using the Canon t6 so this is a huge step up and I never use auto focus at all I'm always using Manuel focus so I know the 4k will be alright without autofocus especially when I'll be leaving it on a tripod and pulling focus
Amen🙏❤️
Agree, most you tubers judge a camera solely based on video capabilities, wtf?
@@HyunRalphJeong
I have been in that ballpark. Sure, I got great images out of the EOS 5D classic, in good light that is. Some fantastic colors.
By stating, "get a used 5D mk1" etc, you completely ignore the modern aspect of the RP or nowadays cameras for the target group
- EVF, the benefits are obvious, "see what you get" is revolutionary
- High ISO performance, with lens and all things equal you get more keepers in low light scenarios
- Dual pixel AF and Eye AF, for portraits, again revolutionary
- Ease of use, transfer and share the images taken in an instant, wifi, bluetooth to your phone, Snapseed them away to social media
- A screen you can rely on and actually use (the 5D mk1 screen is garbage, and you have to rely on the histogram)
- SD instead of old CF cards and CF readers
- Old camera price is around 200-500 USD, if shutter counts are ignored (only Canon service can read 5D Mk1) it could break in an instant and your hard earned, saved, cash is now gone
- Heavy body with spongy buttons
What type of EVF (millions of colors or hz), grade of high ISO performance or DR are past the diminishing of returns for most people and only matched upon user based workflow, then the incremental improvements are "worth it".
You’ll have a great time with the full frame sensor and canon lenses
Fuji is a joke. They did a great marketing campaign to promote its total APS-C crap yet finally, people have decent mirrorless choices.
Funny, I was about to choose the Fuji XT3 over this. How do they compare?
That's the same that i might do is it an upgrade?

I love that you tested for a while and gave an honest review on it. Certain cameras are meant for certain people, and different events. Love this. Thanks for sharing.
“It may a bad camera for a lot of people but it might not be a bad camera for you” coin that!
I don't see any major downsides on the EOS RP since i used it with 85mm f1.4L IS it is perfect.
I just got an RP. I came from a Rebel T5. I got it with a 24-105 rf because i wanted a really nice native lens. In the future I believe Canon will be making really good RF lenses so that is why I decided to stick with Canon and the RP vs a A7II.
Alex Salois The future is looking pretty good for Canon I must say. I thought they were done with cameras for a while haha
I have a T5i and looking to upgrade to RP with 24-105. Still liking it? What are your impressions after one month?
It’s really funny .. and honestly people talk about video but how many will use 4K ? ... 1% . So 🤷🏻♂️
Nice video 👌🏻 and sorry for my english ^^
No your english seems perfect haha. Thank you for the comment
Hyun Ralph Jeong I try to improve myself and not to use the translator haha , you’re welcome :) I appreciate your Chanel +1 sub :)
Michael R. I currently have a Nikon d7500 thinking about getting rid of it and getting this camera,I really like what I see from it.
@@JermoOnTheSticks what was your last camera? how does the RP perform doing landscape and astro? thinking about upgrading to RP from my 6D

What we can say it’s that after hearing you comparing and reviewing the features of this camera, is that for us is not with it. And we thank you for being honest and upfront
That's the great thing in being a tech reviewer..... We read the specs and automatically assume the product is not what I want. Not what I need.. But once we have it in hand.. It's a different story ..glad you decide to purchase the camera and give it a test
The Hungry Black Panda thanks! Yeah you never know until you try them yourself
Love your intro, honesty, and approach. I'm subscribing because camera reviewers like you don't exist anywhere else.
Thank you, I really appreciate it. Do you have an RP? I have an update video coming soon.
I just got the RP. I love it :-) because it takes amazing pictures and I already have Canon lens and flash.
Nice going, a voice of reason. (former 6D mk II owner, and now a RP owner)
Appreciate the comment!
Weird question but why didnt you upgrade to the R? And is the change considered a big upgrade for you?
Thanks for the focusing tips for one handed shooting! As someone who is a recently new RP owner (who has only one really good hand) this was invaluable knowledge for me.
Coming from a Nikon D7000 I really am liking this camera. The things I miss most are the dual card slots and the ability to name my files.
I am an ex canon employee and I know that they have selective market strategy unless it's a low end digicam. You're absolutely right 👍
Divine Art haha good to know, appreciate the comment!
Marcus Gonzales Network. MGN yea you need 3000 dollar lenses on a crppled 1000 dollar body😂
7:32 how do change your initial servo af point to center?
14:50 oh so u suggest the RP better than 5Dii? i'm having hard time to decide which of the two
FYI with Sony A73 the rear LCD is polarized the opposite way which I hated. So portrait was ok but standard landscape mode was not. If you put an LCD cover on it then it should work both ways which was the work around for my Sony but on the RP since the LCD can be twisted back in no need for a cover.
That is really interesting and funny haha thank you for the tip!
Always love your vids.
“I always end up loving the Canon cameras I initially hate”
... I’m fully in agreement with you on this lol
Haha really appreciate the comment.
Can believe there's so much drama over a camera. Haha I think you're at least trying to post the right questions in terms of the target market and purpose. Very nice review.
Thank you! :)
After looking into upgrading to FF I decided to stick with APS-C as in most situations you cannot really tell the difference. Also I am not sold on the advantages of mirrorless, one of the big drawbacks is that the sensors are much more prone to dust spots.
Martin Hommel I used to shoot sony and dust was never really an issue. And if we can get good results with dslrs then why switch right?
I'm looking at the rp as a light travel camera to grab when I head out the door for more casual shooting even just for my instagram. Maybe grab a video clip here or there but mainly for photography. I just wish canon would release more consumer grade rf lenses and I'd love to see them release 1.8 primes for it.
Adam Yeah, unfortunately that’s the biggest weakness right now. Meanwhile you could use the EF 50 and 85 1.8s with an adapter?
@@HyunRalphJeong That's pretty much what I'm looking at. Altough I think I'll just get the 85 to go with the 35 rf and maybe the 24 2.8 to keep things light.
I bought it and returning it. If you want a grab and go camera, get the Fuji XT3. Amazing camera.
I totally agree with you! great video! I ordered my RP already, to put it aside my 5DmkIV, thanks!
Jaime Ortiz thank you!

Just J35 No problem :) what camera do you use now?
@@HyunRalphJeong I believe I use canon t3i
@Edgar G. I really don't know what I'm looking for as far as an upgrade. I know I want a camera that flips open. Good quality than what I have. I'm leaning towards canon, lumix or a sony camera. But im just trying save money.
Just purchased this camera today, should be in next Monday; can’t wait to take it for a spin!
Have fun! You'll love it.
Thanks.
Great point
7:25 wow thx u for this tips.
does canon m5 or m50 has this feature too?
Likely buying it. Shoot 5d4 but want a lighter travel/hiking setup. I’m hoping they also come out with RF f4 lenses too similar to Nikon’s which are 500grams.
Nathan Prachnau Surprisingly getting tons of comments from 5D mark iv owners haha. Yeah wish they had more smaller native lenses but won’t happen this year
I am saving for this camera. My main reasons being the ergonomics, price, and the glass available for it. I don’t shoot video. I want a light full frame for street, family, portraits, and some landscape. Great video!
You're saving and talking about the glass? Very limited glass right now and it's all priced high except for the 35mm.
Really liking this series on the eos rp. Extremely comprehensive. Weird about the sunglasses going dark. Will you ever do a Sony or Nikon camera review? Great job as always.
Daniel&Naz I actually used to shoot Sony and Nikon but now I only shoot Canon haha. But I’ll always try to get my hands on any new cameras when I can!
Omg I didn't know there is a lot of stories behind!!
I agree with you. It is for different people.
Good review Ralph. I agree woth you. This is really more photograhy. Its really not a bad camera it just depends on what you are goin to use it. That eye glasses going black was interesting lol. Im looking for a camera to use in photograpny that is not too expensive.😊👍
Nice follow up review, Hyun. Thanks for posting.
Melvin Johnson thank you for watching :)
Colour grading:
For people who don’t want to colour grade, the jpeg colours are so natural and this makes editing quicker
Lens
EF lens are easy to come by and have some very good lens options at good prices.
4K
Doing 4K properly uses lots of data and processing, I think this is for top end professional photographers, bit rate I find is more important, but if uploading to social media they compress the footage anyway.
You're right on all points, but I have a mk1 so I'll skip the mk2 and go straight to the RP.
Lea Murphy Yeah I’ve been reviewing and testing so many mirrorless cameras and now my 5D seems massive haha
Meneillos I guess at 1.6 It would be around 16? And it’s full cropped, no vignetting.
@@HyunRalphJeong at 1.6x the image size will be around 10.1 MP
Very cool.
Very thorough review! You are the king of the EOS RP reviews haha
Food and Footprints haha thanks
10:53 very impressive (that you sited all the specs in one take). I do love full frame but my current dslr body is getting really old and my A6000 isn't full frame. I only have 2 lenses for my Sony so it wouldn't be too much of a transition for me to switch. I will have to look into Sony A7ii - which seems to be going for around 1100.
Five Minute Sneaker TV haha that “one take” took several tries
Yeah unless you REALLY need full frame, the m50 is probably good.
And After 3 month of using the RP I am always satisfied with it. www.irista.com/gallery/9gk1eln5ma6y a few pictures with the RP.
canon rp or 6dmk2 or 90d? each has their place. thoughts? thank you for the effort and the sharing. thumbs up.
Best approach to a review of this camera I’ve seen yet.
Noel Davis thank you and appreciate the comment!
the parallel you made with sports shoes is perfect, very lucid. It helped me to decide upon this camera. Thanks a lot!
Would the Canon RP be better for low light photos than the XT4?
I just got the RP myself. its an upgrade for me coming from the t7i. the only problem i have is, my Tamrom 70-200 2.8 does not work with it. it will only work in manual focus. The auto focus is not compatible. So look out for that if you are thinking about buying one of these and planning on using 3rd party lenses. not all of them will work.
That's very interesting. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for making this video. I had no idea about the initial spot + servo trick and that really takes me back to DSLR framing, which is great. I really enjoyed that way of framing. Also, tracking is SO great! Thanks again for the video :).
hi every one here , like to check if the rp will turn off itself if the main switch is not turn to off?
Thanks for sharing Ralph. I think i might get this one as my first “professional” camera.
Great review! You really did a great job with a nuanced approach to this camera. I’ve been recommending the camera to many people and I’m a Sony shooter. It’s a perfect camera for many people.
adventure_photo haha thank you. Appreciate the comment!
How did you get so knowledgeable about cameras??
feed meimei Lots of credit card debt lol
Great, unbiased review....really enjoying my RP. It's a fun, little camera. I upgraded from a 6D Mark I.
Craig Scarlett is it a big difference from 6d
Craig Scarlett thank you, it really did surprised me too.
Craig Scarlett wow insane 🤠🔥
Dereje Ambatchew Hi, do have a couple FD lenses but never tried any of the adapters.
@@HyunRalphJeong I will try to remember to come back with a comment but it will be a while before I get the camera. Enjoyed the video. Regards
Interesting!
What did you end up with?
@@adrian-alexandruneculcea206 I see. It's always nice to have that personal connection with your gear too.
I am a rp user but I have a problem while I take the shutter above1/250 high speed sync with canon flash it didn't syncing help me out if you know
Ah, I left the camera at home today so I won't be able to try it until later, but I'm not sure if the RP even supports HSS. What kind of flash are you using? and are you using a trigger? or mounted on camera?
@@HyunRalphJeong I used godox v860+x1HSS TRIGGER and canon 600 flash with TRIGGER but results are same above 1/160 of shutter speed .
@@9439419534 Yeah just tried mine and seems like RP doesn't support HSS. Same settings on the R worked fine.
@@HyunRalphJeong so it is waist buying rp for photography
@@9439419534 I guess if you need to use HSS
excellent presentation Hyun... my daughter moved up to the RP from the T1i as it was full frame, and she can use her EF Lens. It was a wise move, i think, because she'll be upgrading to RF Lens system, and it didn't make sense to spend a lot of money on a body (which will be obsolete by the time she's completed her lens compliment, and ready for a serious/professional body.
So, cost and upgrade plan was why she went that way.
All above my level as my stills and videos will attest. Half a watch and a like though... great days to you Mr.Jeong
TheCanadianBubba And the dame to you sir!
Hyun Ralph Jeong Hmmm...Cool. Thanks, man.
Love and use the cameras that people hated. That's why it's worth watching to get different perspectives.
great review straight to the points asked!
Terry Le Boeuf Thank you and appreciate the comment!
At 7min 33 sec what last setting you did, please
Still a APSC Having about 7years I liked to upgrade to full frame. . Can you suggest me whether I choose 6d or EOS R or RP mainly focused on landscape and street photos including people on frame
What camera are you upgrading from? If you want something smaller and lighter, and if you're okay with using an adapter, the RP might be a good option. The R probably won't be worth extra $1000 at this point.
If you are okay with a bigger camera and you want better battery life, the 6D or the 6D mark ii might be better.
@@HyunRalphJeong Eos 7D. Battery is not considerable matter for me I shot a frame very slowly ,so I can brought TO RP at adorable price range !!
Oh, I like your realistic angle of reviewing !
I’m a Eos M6 shooter and looking to maybe get a RP, but every reviewer seems to focus on vlogging or just getting the most expensive of feature-packed gadgets...
RP is a beautiful camera. With good fast lens, the IQ is way beyond M-series
Perhaps the most sensible review of RP. My view is that for a principal still photographer it is “horses for the courses”.
I fine that HDR isn’t a problem if the shot is taken right. I found the RP to be great in low light!
I agree! I was surprised by how much better it was than my 6D mark ii.
What's the R slow motion like at 120fps.
Mark Shirley You lose autofocus and audio but the video quality is not bad
In Denmark it was only the adapter included. No grip, and no date for availability for the grip. I got the 5dmk4 with ef 24-105mm F4L lens, for the same price as rp with rf 24-105mm F4L lens.
That's a great deal. Yeah, if you don't need a mirrorless body, the 5Dmk4 is amazing.
thanks for a perfect unbiased review, I bought RP body switching from 6d, I am so happy with my first full frame mirrorless , my most important and reason to switch on a mirrorless camera with articulated LCD screen , I have both eyes with cataract surgery done but unfortunately some temporary blurry ness due to some medical issues, I find this continuously on LCD makes perfect for me while shooting interiors and fixed model shots in studio set up.
I have a SL2 I wonder if this a decent upgrade
Louis Luzuka what do you usually shoot?
Hyun Ralph Jeong i shoot vlogs, for portraits I shoot mostly on my d700 i was going to get an a7s or 6d for video but I saw this and eos R or a7iii I just have a lot of efs lenses that’s all
Louis Luzuka the flip out screen is definitely useful for vlogging. And you can’t beat Canon’s dual pixel autofocus. 2 weeks ago, I would have suggested the 6D mark ii, but I think I’m liking the RP more.
Hyun Ralph Jeong thank you! U think it’s worth it to save up for the eos R or this is good enough for now? Much love from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦
Louis Luzuka I’d say go with the RP. Cheers!
Your sigma lens is for ef mount? That sigmas work fine on rf mount? I want to by sigma 24-70 f/2.8 but i don’t know if that’s gonna work well....
You can absolutely win wards with that camera. It’s better than the cameras that were winning all the awards 10yrs ago. They are just tools people.
The RP is an outstanding camera and great value.
I like your approach. You have another subscriber. I’m not a video shooter, I’m mainly interested in the stills performance.
Thank you and appreciate the comment sir! Are you planning on getting the RP?
I have a comparison here: ruclips.net/video/pba1yifZQ2M/видео.html
With the lenses, it just depends on what mount they are and you need to find which adapter you need but Sony is probably more flexible for that.
An excellent, detailed review. Thank you very much. I am subscribing to your channel.
John Armwood Thank you! Really appreciate the comment
What’s that thing at the base of your camera?
Extended grip
I currently have a 6D Mark 1and shoot mostly low light band photos in clubs or models in varying light. Would the RP be a good upgrade or addition, especially for the low light concert photos?
Yes rp is better in low light
Really nice vid. Is it easy to match colors with eos r? Would you have a rp as a second camera to the r?
Thanks I really appreciate your point of view .. Now I know what I will buy the RP :)
Can some please elaborate on the EF lenses not working in 1080? Are ef lenses compatible? To what extent? Thanks
EF lenses work but EF-S lenses don't. When you attach an EF-S lens to it, all 1080p options disappear.
I shoot a lot of bands performing in fairly low light in clubs. I currently have the Canon 6D mark 1. Would you recommend the 6D Mark ii or the RP for low light focusing and image quality to 6400 ISO? I can't afford the R or 5D Mark IV.
I had the 6D and now the RP. About the same sensor but the dual pixel AF is a joy to use. That and many more focus points.
For video I think it’s nothing special, but for someone who wants a good full frame mirrorless camera for photography its a great option.
Vincent Verdiny I agree.
Finally a review that made complete sense to me. Thank you very much
I just purchased this camera with the grip attachment and the ef lens adapter I think this camera looks great and very affordable I was going to get the eos r but after doing research I was sold on the rp and now it's on the way in the mail and I purchased extra batteries as well as a USB so I can attach it to a dummy battery
