    Why do I even bother with other reviewers? You’re thorough, objective and honest. Classy.
    Thank you.

      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад +7

      It was a pleasure to read your kind words. However, other reviewers do often identify concerns and delve more deeply into some issues. I would suggest that basing a decision on one article, or video is hasty.

    • @MrCPH22
      @MrCPH22 5 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the advice, but I don’t tend to make hasty decisions. There is simply to much “binary” information in most reviews. A camera is either the best or the worst, which is polarizing and confusing.
      I appreciate the subtle nuances and find your oppinions mostly in line with mine. I turn to Gerald Undone and Chris Nicholls for technical aspects, and to you for a measured overview.

    Your reviews are, there’s no other word for it, epic! The amount of work you must put in before each video is very impressive.
    I can’t afford a full frame camera at the moment but part of the fun of our hobby is learning about new cameras and making a mental wish list for future reference! And there are no better reviews to help us than yours.
    I had several 'full frame' cameras in days long ago, including Fujica and Minolta models which I very much enjoyed. Why are full frame cameras so expensive now that the film is replaced by an electronic sensor? Well, there’s the answer I suppose, all the electronic stuff is very expensive! I guess if you added up the price of all the rolls of 24 and 36 exposure film we bought and added the cost of processing/printing them to the cost of the cameras it might be a better comparison - now we have to buy it all at once! Ah well, looking forward to more 'epic' reviews from you!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      Your kind comments are appreciated, thanks. It does take time, but these are projects that I enjoy. It's the sensor that's expensive. If there's a failure on a die making smaller sensors, there are many more that are OK. With full frame, a failure is more expensive - in addition, of course, to all the other factors like larger/faster processors for handling more data.

      I like the point about comparing to film costs and buying it all up front. If you do that comparison FF digital is a bargain! I must remember that for the next time my wife spots me looking at camera reviews! :-)

    It really doesn't seem like the camera deserves the flack it gets online. It looks great to me! Clearly not intended to be a "pro" camera, but an affordable, reliable camera for consumers. Add that killer kit lens, and it seems like a more reasonable option than going in for professional-level bodies that most people don't really need. Great review, sir!

    14:34 "In Program mode there's no shift mode for alternate shutter and aperture combination". I'm not quite sure what you mean by shift mode, and I don't know about this camera. But Canon's standard method of selecting a different combination has always been simply to roll the "main" (top) dial - no special mode required.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      It sounds like you know exactly what I mean and I was as surprised as you were. I triple checked that I hadn't missed some button to activate it, but the manual also makes no mention. Such an odd omission.

    • @skakdosmer
      @skakdosmer 5 лет назад

      Remarkable! But then I must confess that although I mostly do shoot in P mode, I've never actually changed the combination in this way. If I don’t like what P mode suggests, I always go to a different mode, mostly Av.
      So this omission wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me.
      But the fact that you can’t record video in 1080 with an EF-S lens attached is!
      (And I don’t like the small battery - why not an LP-E6n?)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      I don't shoot P either, but felt I needed to mention that for those that do. Right, not a great video camera on any count.

      For as much as I'm an X-T3 fan, and don't believe that most of us need full frame, that is the advantage of the RP. I didn't get a chance to try the adapter, but yes, that's clearly a benefit to staying with Canon. Let me know if you need a link to a Canon to x-mount adapter.

    most grumpy old men youtubers hate this amazing cheap full frame camera with incredible color science. i paired my RP with EF 24-70, tiffen circular polarizer to cut some unwanted reflections and godox tt685ii with dome. and the result? it's impressive. i'm also thinking to get the true color vnd filter. the color profile that i used is landscape, my favourite. if you're using this color profile on portrait i suggest to drag the orange hue on lightroom towards left a little bit to avoid green skin tones on your model. this camera is not for wildlife and sports photography. it's still usable but not that great.

    Hi Maarten. Thanks for the channel and your nice reviews. Is it still worth buying a used RP or is it better to look at newer crop cameras (R10, X-10S/20S)? No specific tasks, general family/travel photography (start with kit lenses, primes in case of RP). Been mostly using the phone for the last few years, but would like to get back to cameras (and trying FF looks tempting). Thanks.

    Hoi Maarten, Thank you for this excellent video! I am in the process of buying this camera. The thing I not 100% sure about is whether to get the 50mm F1.8 or the 24-105 F4-F7.1 lens. The main use of the camera will be food photography. I think I should get both at the end of the day, but which lens would you recommend to get me started. Groetjes uit Noorwegen, Richard

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Год назад +1

      While the f1.8 aperture will provide better photos in low light, 50mm is a little long for food photography - you may end up standing on chairs. The 24-105 is likely the better choice, but a wide-angle large aperture prime might better - or add a flash to your purchase.

    Nice and quite usefull review . Besides price , this camera also stands out as being the lightest full frame system body , wich is the main point for me . If i add the fully mobile screen as i like taking vertical low shots , this becomes the only fit , again in FF . I prefer small primes to zoom but guess what : next week the RP + adapter + rf 35 f1.8 is macro stm are $1600 ... canadian + taxes , so about $2K with cards and batteries . A hard decision since i don't lack equipment but it would be quite a walkaround with much higher iso capabilities than what i already have.

    I am mainly interested in still photography, what do you think about the use of manual focus lens on this camera? The absence of internal image stabilization sparks an hesitation in me.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад +1

      Support for manual focus is reasonable. Peaking offers fewer features and is less sensitive than most. The 10x view though, is very good and useful, although it would be nice to have it switch automatically when using manual focus.
      While stabilization can be useful, faster lenses, optically stabilized lenses and tripods all provide alternate solutions. I was puzzled that it's not included for stills, as the IS for video is very good.
