Hi Gordon I’m just starting out doing street photography night and daytime around London, I’m coming from an iPhone 8 (😅I know, not great). And my budget is around the price point of the RP. Do you think it is a good option for the task at hand? For a beginner like myself capturing day and night shots in the city. We bought an RP & RF 24-105 L a couple of weeks ago, and are extremely happy with it, and with the image quality. We plan to use it mostly for general and landscape photography, and are upgrading from the 80D. It is a lot of camera in a small body, with an excellent lens on the front. Looking forward to many years of use with the new RF system. I especially like the Flex and 3 custom modes.
Great review. I’d be very tempted to pick up the RP for 1080 full frame vlogging, for I’m sure it would perform better in low light situations than the Canon M50. That said, the lack of 24fps is a real deal breaker.
I just bought this camera and am happy. i've been wanting to upgrade from my t6i for quite some time. i was planning to buy the 5dmkII, and was waiting for it to get down below 2000 dollars. but i started looking at this camera, and was impressed with the reviews. it was 1299, but before christmas, canon dropped the price to 999, which was a big drop, further reduced to 799 because of the canon 20% loyalty discount. so, i got it for 862 with tax, including the adapter, which allows me to use all my EF lenses. so, i feel pretty good about it.
I think the RP is great for anyone that bases their work on delivering products for the internet. It's a full frame camera, meaning you'll get more from your lenses, which is ultimately the biggest reason you'd get one in the first place. If you're worried about low light performance, odds are, you're probably not doing work that requires the added quality anyway. If you are, you'd most likely be using lights for a professional look. Overall, I think it's a pretty good camera, affordability being the strongest benefit. Ps: Best RP review on RUclips, period.
Just saying, not all professional work requires lighting equipment. If your work is Portrait shoots or the like, then most likely. Depending on your style, for weddings you most likely need it, or not. Fashion Photography done on location (again depending on your style) may or may not need artificial lighting. It just comes down to your style or the style required by your client.
I'm amazed that some manufacturers seemingly release half-hearted products with quite a few flaws, and - at fairly high prices at launch. I know the A7 II is an old camera nowadays, but as device with its flaws, it is still quite competitive with many newer offerings. Quite frustrating for people looking to get into full frame mirrorless cameras. Gr8 vid as always.
By far the most complete, usable video review of this camera - I LOVE your technique - especially showing the workings of the screen access and options! The details on the video segment of the camera give me pause (I've been a pro video guy with TV station for years) but might not stop me.. I'm still considering the options and cost. Hey, thanks for the great video! I think that people buy a FF also because of low light situations. And if the Canon RP does not give you a huge advantage in comparison to APS-C-cameras, that is quite disappointing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I didn't see much benefit to this particular sensor over the APSC ones I compared it against. But there are other benefits to FF such as access to more lenses with bright apertures, so greater potential for shallow DOF effects.
@@sebas-seemore-8470 that's hard for me to say, but I would imagine it must be a decent improvement. Have a look at my review of the T5i or similar at cameralabs.com and you'll find ISO results for it you can compare to those in my RP review.

Dude... sooooooo good. You really broke this down. Perfect for the market who would be buying this. This looks like a perfect “Prosumer” product. I’m thinking self-employed who use cameras (like REALTORs). Both product shots (house images) but also promotional content like marketing videos. A good do-it-all kit that works for many situations keeping overall gear cost lower. The same can be said for family oriented use. It’s also “consumer user” easy to operate. >> You don’t need the best camera if you can’t take good shots. This allows a person to learn faster because it’s easier to use. I’m also excited to downgrade from 4K videos because of the file size and internet usage. The 1080 on this Canon RP will make your life easier if you just want to make stunning shareworthy content for family and small business. That’s who this cameras for 📸
Thank you. I upgraded from 70D to RP for full frame and access to RF glass, never do video, everything has compromises and I'm not apologizing for my decision.
A refreshingly detailed review on the EOS RP that doesn't have much of the sensational stuff and focuses just on the pros and cons of the system. Personally, I think the only real advantages to the RP is its price and the lens ecosystem. It's more appealing in that regard either to people who want a new FF mirrorless camera that doesn't break the bank but also with access to a large lens catalog (even when adapted as the RF ecosystem right now mostly consists of premium "L" glass) or current Canon shooters who either want to upgrade from their aging body to an FF system or as a secondary camera that's smaller but also with an FF sensor. Bear in mind that it'll more than likely be stills-oriented shooters, as the RP's video leaves a lot to be desired. It's certainly usable, but those who are hybrid shooters may want to look elsewhere. I think the RP's biggest issue is that it's competing in the same league as other cameras that offer a more well-rounded featureset, such as the Fujifilm X-T30 or the slightly more-expensive X-T3, which may not have the full chops of 35mm FF, but its APS-C sensor ain't no slouch either and can hold its own even up against the RP, not to mention it's hybrid appeal. But I'm also not going to call this camera the "Canon EOS RiP", because while it's relatively unexciting, I'm sure Canon will sell a lot of these, and not just due to the word "CANON" on the front. The RF ecosystem seems to be growing at a relatively good pace and the RP might actually be a good option *if* you know exactly what you're looking at and understand its pros and cons. Don't buy this camera just because it says "CANON" on the front, but get it when it fits your purposes, for example like either as an affordable* FF starter kit or as a secondary body to an existing EF/RF kit, as I think that's where the RP is going to appeal most. * - Affordable is relative in this case, as native RF glass can cost quite a bit as of this time, with the native kit offering being nearly as much as the RP body itself
You're right about an affordable lens system, at least in terms of older EF lenses. For example, no-one has as cheap a 50mm f1.8 as Canon and Nikon for their DSLRs...
Gordon Laing Indeed. I personally think the mirrorless systems could (and should) have a range of affordable primes that offer very good IQ at a price point that’s not out of reach for many. It’s likely on the cards at this point, but it seems that upper-end premium glass are a priority for many mirrorless system manufacturers as of now, with some even having some more exotic solutions like f/0.95 glass or faster. I personally think those are more for technological showcases but maybe some people would find it useful, although I’m not sure as to exactly which group.
It's also an ideal travel camera if you have existing RF or EF lenses. My R6 is too large to travel with on a motorbike but the RP is perfect without sacrificing too much and I can use existing lenses and filters.
I'm so glad you came back with a full review of the RP. I trust your reviews more than any other RUclipsr's. I'm interested in moving to full frame from MFT and the fact that the RP also has focus bracketing is a win for me along with the size and price of the camera. I'm not sure, however, after seeing your high ISO samples, that it is truly a huge upgrade when it comes to noise. Still pondering.
They must have added a Full HD at 23.98p in a firmware update. I just bought my RP yesterday, and I have access to all 7 sizes including Full HD 23.98p and Full HD 59.94p to choose from in Movie mode. Thank god for firmware updates. Regarding the loss of Dual Pixel AF when recording in 4K, I have found an excellent solution. Using DaVinci Resolve, I apply the Super Scale feature set to "x2" which upscales the HD footage to 4K. The results are quite astonishing. You may have to adjust sharpness and grain in post, but, in the end the quality is nearly indiscernible between the original HD footage and the 4K upscaled version. I use the Studio version of Resolve, so I'm not sure if the Super Scale feature is available in the free version of Resolve. But, unless you're going to project your footage on a theater screen, you can probably make it work for your online films, etc.
Murph why do you think it has bad bokeh? Lol the nifty fifty is phenomenal for the price the only real issue it has is color fringing which is expected at the price.
genuine question: I always heard that one of the reasons the fifties were so ... nifty was the flange distance on 35mm DSLR cameras, which was set by the mirror. Does the shorter flange distance on mirrorless meant that a new wider lens will be the new fifty, or will it still be 50mm that's the niftiest on FF? Is this why canon went with the "Pro" 50 and the "cheap(ish)" 35?
Great review, thanks! To my astonishment I actually bought the RP. I’ve been saving for a Sony A7III, but price-point, ergonomics, full touch-enabled functionality, and the 3-axis tilt screen, won out on my personal Pro-&-Con matrix... and I love shooting the RP. I may end up getting an A7lV when it hits, but the only real missing elements for me is IBIS, Video time limit, and crop 4k. The EG-1 extender is like Clark Kent’s phonebooth, completely transforms the personality of this camera, especially with big glass. I feel like I’m back with my EOS 620 (my last Canon lol) and just enjoying photography again! (Posted on your 1st RP vid also)... Excellent overview!
Great review. I'm looking to simplify my current m43 gear and the RP with the 35mm looks like a great match for me. I'm going to stick to a one lens setup renting EF or RF lenses if required. I'm not too worried about the limitations as I only ever shoot in 1080 for video and would prefer not to spend too much time in post so good jpegs are ideal. I think your review has convinced me to give the RP a try. Thank you!

Just got my RP, planning to use 85f1.2L EF with adapter. Simple family portraits setup, no need to invest an arm and leg on RF lenses. IMO best combo for $2000US for my typical use. No other systems will give me the same shallow depth of field with dual pixel autofocus and Canon Colours. Don't print super big, don't need pull shadow +4stops.
Thanks for another comprehensive and well-presented review, Gordon. As a stills camera the RP seems to be more attractive than some initial opinions might have suggested, but I'm not regretting my decision to adopt the FE system a couple of years ago.
It's actually not really that bad of a stills camera. Though I think the RP's biggest issue (besides the obvious video limitations) is that it's competing against crop sensor cameras that are more well-rounded in terms of capabilities whilst also delivering very good IQ. I think what surprised me the most was how close both the X-T30 and the a6400 got to the RP at very high ISOs.
Hi Gordon, know I'm late to the party but with the recent price drops the RP has come back to consideration. Even as a firm Canon fan I find it simply under baked - Rumors are late 2020 should see a further price drop on an improved version. Lets hope so... Stay safe, stay well.
I like this cameras looks/ergonomics but its crippled video setting would hold me back. M50 is awesome for now. The R lenses coming soon look awesome...no rush. Enjoyed your review!
Just bought an RP with 3000 shutter clicks for $762. Already love it for real estate photography and portaits, just for the screen and autofocus alone.
I am still using my RP as my back up camera. To my EOS R and EOS D5 SR. My back up camera seems to be the camera I use most. It smallness seems its best advantage. I use the 24-105 L mostly. I have the 15-35 2.8L but I tend to keep that on my EOS R.I also have the 16mm R 2.8. I dont tend to use that.
I think Canon has a real winner here with the EOS RP. Whats not to love about an affordable FF mirrorless camera?! If they can improve the 4k video & add IBIS, it could be the perfect travel/vlogging camera! I agree the rf 35 f1.8 is the perfect lens for it right now.
I’d like to add that there is very little support for the RP’s RAW files. Basically only Adobe Lightroom is the only option. I use Luminar 3. In my opinion this camera is a wonderful 1080 and JPEG machine. I was okay with the 1080, the lack of RAW support is a major downer. I shoot commercial images and hope I can use jpeg’s and bracket exposures together. I really wish cameras had jpeg, raw and dng. I think dng should be standard as having jpeg.
Thanks for this video. Like someone else mentioned it seems like the camera doesn't have much of advantage for lowlight, which is one of my top priorities. I think the design is compact enough for a mirrorless full frame and I think the lenses look nice, but some of them might need to be downsized. Overall, Canon has nice lenses, I don't know about price relative to other brands but one of the things that Canon needs to work on is sensor. I think there's still room for improvement, so many might be against Canon but I've been a Canon user for a while and have used other brands, and Canon doesn't seem to be far behind the competition. As always, I'm happy to see Canon's innovation, they aren't doing badly. Not a perfect camera, but I'm still excited. I hope many people who wanted to are able to switch to Full Frame now!
Glad you liked the video! Yes, I think I should have mentioned more about the EF lens prices as they can be very affordable, and of course there's a big second-hand market.
As usual, a fine review. Oddly, the penny dropped only towards the end of the video that the Canon is a full frame body! Seeing it compared with two APS-C bodies (and not outperforming in any way) confused me, but that’s not your fault - I should be more up to date. The review certainly supported my decision to move from FF Sony A7II / A7R to Fuji XT2/20 and their excellent primes. Ergonomics and poor choice of compatible lenses drove that decision. But I also run Olympus EM1mk2 with Pro zooms for dynamic and distant subjects...also for low light situation, so long as the subject is reasonably static! Cheers

Thanks for this really helpful video Gordon. I have a Canon 60D which I am still fairly happy with but I am wondering whether to stick with Canon if I upgrade. I would like more than 9 focus points when I have my 60D on a tripod and take several images, each focused on different subjects in a still life composition, and then focus stack them. The focus bracketing feature in the Canon RP sounds brilliant.

Personally, I got the RP + EF adapter for $800 brand new not long ago, combining with my only lens Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art, that's my first ever camera setup and it's doing great for street photography in my perspective (I have no interest in making video myself) but all the reviews out there had made me felt bad about the camera purchase. I guess my only problem now is not being able to find the grip here in Aus and the wait for new Sigma RF lens haha, Canon's ones are bloody expensive
Gordon - Thanks for the review. I have a question. The R and RP have recently had a firmware upgrade, 1.4 and 1.3 respectively. It is supposed to improve the eye/face AF performance. Can you tell whether the 1.3 upgrade for the RP and the 1.4 upgrade for the RP are equally effective? Also, how close does the upgrade take the R/RP to contenders such a sony a7III or panasonic G9? Thanks.
I just bought my RP yesterday. And from what I've filmed so far, the AF is excellent. If you want to shoot in 4K, I have included in my comment above a means of upscaling HD to 4K with great results.
You mention that the RP has similar weather resistance as the 80D. I thought it was less than the 80D for weather sealing. Can you please confirm this? This has been one of the big reasons I was shying away from this body. Thanks!
Splendid review. I remember your review on the Canon 7D which I owned until it was stolen recently. Now I am looking to get a new camera and this one seems to go well with my canon 70-200 f4 lens. as well as my 50mm 1.4. Great job.
Excellent review Gordon, as always in depth and very clear. for me they missed an opportunity, i have been waiting for a decent FF camera from Canon to use my great Canon lenses , i tried this camera in the store for few min and it felt too slow for my needs, the focus is no where near as fast as the competition and the whole point of a larger FF sensor is to have the advantage of better dynamic range and excellent high ISO performance, this camera does neither very well. the only advantage is the depth of field. I think Sony has better mature mirror less FF cameras. CANON RIP :)
Great video! But I do have one issue with is you keep saying you are happy with the JPEG images! How are the Raw images? Just like when shooting video shoot flat then in editing is where you bring the footage to life. Same goes for still images, shoot Raw for more dynamic range and edit it to your liking don't let the camera decide what to delete and edit for you!
Attractive “upgrade” for Eos 70D owners? Not me! Downgrading to 720p and a smaller battery isn't really attractive. Why, even my old 550D does 1080p with crop sensor lenses.
In other words, owners of very old full frame cameras? And Canon thinks they will accept the smaller battery? I find it surprising if they're really not interested in attracting APS-C owners. They could hardly expect us not to care about 1080.
@@skakdosmer I think they do want APSC owners too, but the ones who'll find it most useful are those who also own some EF lenses. I think many APSC body owners own at least one EF lens...
Good balanced review, thanks Gordon. As a stills shooter with very little interest in video, I've found this camera to be fantastic. Upgrading from an ancient 20D, it has been a revelation. And being able to adapt the slew of EF lenses I already had meant that I didn't need to go mad and buy lots of new glass. Out of interest, how did you find the EVF in your time with the camera? To my eye, it looks like a rather cold and slightly unsaturated image that doesn't really reflect what the eye sees. Not sure if this is just my model, all Canon RPs or a feature of mirrorless bodies in general.
Thanks Nick, yes I think you're a perfect customer for the RP, upgrading from a much older model. The EVF is fairly average, there's better ones on more expensive models, but I think it's ok. Maybe your picture style needs adjusting? I found the standard style was pretty saturated, but if it's your first EVF, you will find it looking quite different to an optical viewfinder. Over time, you won't notice anymore and like me will probably end up preferring the new tech.
Yours is a detailed and easy-to-understand review, always. One trusts what you say co your views seem to be quite less-sponsors-tilted. Newcomers like us do get to learn from you, although my field is rather philosophy of photography...sort of😉. Keep it up!
Thank you for the video. I bought the RP and can take very sharp photos with its paired RP 100-500mm lense when photographing a still or slow moving subject with no objects in the way. However, I can't track an eagle in flight for a sharp photo and if I think I am sharply focused on wildlife, I may only be sharpley focused on a small darker in color branch.
I changed to the RP from a 5 D Mark II and so far so good. Good color, I need the help with focus and the smaller size is great. I need the portability Ave nit to be noticed so much. Thanks much!!
I am getting an adapter for the lens so it might be because it’s just the body. I was able to set date and change settings but when I go to take pictures it just shows a white screen
@@faliciatucker8833 which lens and which adapter are you using? And what mode are you using? I'd suggest auto at first so you know that exposure isn't being an issue.
Remember there's focus bracketing which is the capture of the images and focus stacking which happens afterwards in software. Fujifilm has had focus bracketing for a while, but I don't think Sony has it.
@@777sib yes, the Olympus models also have focus bracketing AND can stack a bunch of them in-camera too. Panasonic's Post Focus mode also offers focus stacking, albeit using grabbed frames from video.
in Australia the RP is $500 more than either a A6400 or X T30 body, so i think it will struggle, i feel the A6400 is where i'm heading next after many years as a Canon user, A-1, T-90 , Eos 1 were breakthrough Inspiring cameras , Canon seems to be following rather than leading now.
Thanks for the great video! I'll pass. Not exciting before, not exciting now. Price is relatively affordable in the FF mirrorless world, but seriously hampered to reflect that aswell. Pocket camera battery life, video options unimpressive, no IBIS... Focusing is close to Sony, i think i prefer Sony. Especially in 4K. Honestly, i'd pay more just for the better battery alone. I'm uncertain of the lenses (prices / sizes), the whole roadmap ahead. Sony is much more established in this regard. But the 35mm f1.8 is step in the right direction. Better ergonomics than with Sony. Sony or Nikon is much more exciting to me. But to each their own.
I feel the exact opposite. Sony’s convoluted menu system, ergonomics where my fingers don’t fit between the lens & grip, and no fully articulating screen make me never want to pick up. Canon on the hand make me want to use it more often.
@@Davitor1 Yeah, i feel you. After Canon / Panasonic menus, something like Sony / Olympus feels unnecessarily convoluted (at first). Luckily, many manufacturers are now implementing the "My Menu" options, so that's good. Doesn't change the core issues in menu design, but it's a step in the right direction. The custom menu was good enough. Didn't really have the need to delve into menus after setting them. Sony needs to improve their ergonomics, and they will. I don't see any other way in staying top-dog competitive, while addressing some of the criticism. But i've handled the A7 III few times (some photos and video), and it feels good in my small hands. Not great, but certainly good enough. I can dig it. Flippy screen definitely has the best viewing angles, but it's not the be-all end-all anymore (for me atleast). It's best advantage is the front-facing, side and overhead view. However, flippy is more fragile than tilting screens, it can get more easier loose / damaged in due time. Also, ports / cables can easily get on the way. Plus the tilting screen is often more faster to set-up & use. Maybe front-facing use is the most useful, but even for that there's often wireless connections. View through Wifi in smart phone, frame yourself and tap to record / focus. Still, the flippy screen is great. Surely, use that which compels you to use it. That which just begs to be used and feels great. Many points you mentioned would make Canon attractive. But not the likes of RP for me. The lack-luster features and poor battery are NOT something i'd be thrilled about in the long run. I say, poor battery is fine for small pocket cameras, but not for FF. 3-4 extra batteries? Well, they are small so that's good... However, i will not stand it anymore. Luckily there's many great mirrorless cameras with much better battery life, so yay! Great times with so many cameras nowadays. Well, it's already been great the past ~10 years in the mirrorless world. But now the whole industry is maturing up to different levels, and Canon has some catching up to do.
Thanks for the review. A balanced pro and con review of the camera indeed for someone who is just beginning to learn photography. I have a Canon M50 right now and love it. Do you think it makes sense to make the switch to this camera? It seems like the RP and the M50 is "almost" identical with respect to features and I am struggling whether it makes any sense to sell the M50 and buy the RP. Any advice would be most welcome.

I actually moved now into looking closely at the A6400 having just experienced its blazing fast focus etc. I do like the RP but now experienced it’s “laggy” feel regarding its review of the shot taken and seemingly slow focus compared to a6400. Was looking for FF but, hmmm, maybe not. !?!
Thank you ,I like it very much specialty the no need of ajustment which is not true for Nikon Z cameras but i have problem with exp compsation ,sometimes it doesn't work even in Live vew which make the camera unreliable for quick action

Hi you mention people with older Canon camera would benefit upgrading to the RP upgrade. I do have an old 7D. But recently I got the Canon EOS M5 before the RP was released I was looking for a small mirrorless camera. Would it be a good idea to upgrade to the RP or would I be ok just keeping the M5?
Hmmm I don't know, is it really possible that this full frame sensor does not give you any benefit over APSC in higher ISO? Dpreview iso test shows significantly less colour noise vs a smaller sensor. I'm now hesitant to upgrade from Lumix G80.
What about the sensor that has no cover over it? When changing lenses it is completely exposed becoming a dust magnet. That was a big mistake and makes it far less appealing to me. Also, no in-body image stabilization.

Hi Gordon, I would love to hear your opinion on the Canon EOS 90D vs EOS RP. I own mostly EF-S lenses and I am planning on using it for portrait and wedding photography. Which one do you recommend? Thank you so much in advance for all of your help!
If you adapt EF-S lenses onto a full-frame body, they will operate in a cropped mode, which for still photos means a much reduced resolution. So if you're sticking with EF-S lenses, get a cropped frame body, in this case, the 90D.
Gordon love your work, but i have a request Please! start adding some background music to make it better, only vocals kind of gets boring to listen to after sometime and hence my mind defocus and focuses onto something else
I'm torn between doing this or leaving them vocal only. If I was presenting fun, silly videos, then yes, I'd do music, but I'm trying to get across a LOT of technical information like a work presentation, so I think music could make it harder for some to understand, especially if English isn't their first language.

Question re: 2.30 seconds to anyone - if the 'shutter' is down or closed when the mount is exposed on the R is it possible to blow dust out using a ' dust bomb blower' or will that damage the shutter. If this is bad practice won't the shutter gather dust quicker because it's more exposed to the environment.

Gordon Laing I’m often wary of stopping down more than f11 due to diffraction so the focus bracketing would be a boon on my jewellery images. I can see it becoming a primary body. Link noted : )
Just bought an RP and never buying a Canon again. The viewfinder is 2 shades more cyan than the evf. Shooting in black and white is like shooting in black and green.
@@cameralabs It has NOT. I just wanted a bigger body, the lenses and flashes I'm using are bigger than the camera. I know the RP doesn't shoot fast, I don't mind keeping the M50, just wondering if the RP provides that better image quality, or at least enough to warrant the upgrade.

I’m just starting out doing street photography night and daytime around London, I’m coming from an iPhone 8 (😅I know, not great). And my budget is around the price point of the RP. Do you think it is a good option for the task at hand? For a beginner like myself capturing day and night shots in the city.

We bought an RP & RF 24-105 L a couple of weeks ago, and are extremely happy with it, and with the image quality. We plan to use it mostly for general and landscape photography, and are upgrading from the 80D. It is a lot of camera in a small body, with an excellent lens on the front. Looking forward to many years of use with the new RF system. I especially like the Flex and 3 custom modes.

Great review. I’d be very tempted to pick up the RP for 1080 full frame vlogging, for I’m sure it would perform better in low light situations than the Canon M50. That said, the lack of 24fps is a real deal breaker.
They have added that in a firmware update since.
I just bought this camera and am happy. i've been wanting to upgrade from my t6i for quite some time. i was planning to buy the 5dmkII, and was waiting for it to get down below 2000 dollars. but i started looking at this camera, and was impressed with the reviews. it was 1299, but before christmas, canon dropped the price to 999, which was a big drop, further reduced to 799 because of the canon 20% loyalty discount. so, i got it for 862 with tax, including the adapter, which allows me to use all my EF lenses. so, i feel pretty good about it.
I think the RP is great for anyone that bases their work on delivering products for the internet.
It's a full frame camera, meaning you'll get more from your lenses, which is ultimately the biggest reason you'd get one in the first place.
If you're worried about low light performance, odds are, you're probably not doing work that requires the added quality anyway. If you are, you'd most likely be using lights for a professional look.
Overall, I think it's a pretty good camera, affordability being the strongest benefit.

Just saying, not all professional work requires lighting equipment. If your work is Portrait shoots or the like, then most likely. Depending on your style, for weddings you most likely need it, or not. Fashion Photography done on location (again depending on your style) may or may not need artificial lighting.
It just comes down to your style or the style required by your client.
I'm amazed that some manufacturers seemingly release half-hearted products with quite a few flaws, and - at fairly high prices at launch. I know the A7 II is an old camera nowadays, but as device with its flaws, it is still quite competitive with many newer offerings. Quite frustrating for people looking to get into full frame mirrorless cameras. Gr8 vid as always.
By far the most complete, usable video review of this camera - I LOVE your technique - especially showing the workings of the screen access and options! The details on the video segment of the camera give me pause (I've been a pro video guy with TV station for years) but might not stop me.. I'm still considering the options and cost. Hey, thanks for the great video! I think that people buy a FF also because of low light situations. And if the Canon RP does not give you a huge advantage in comparison to APS-C-cameras, that is quite disappointing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I didn't see much benefit to this particular sensor over the APSC ones I compared it against. But there are other benefits to FF such as access to more lenses with bright apertures, so greater potential for shallow DOF effects.

I’m thinking self-employed who use cameras (like REALTORs). Both product shots (house images) but also promotional content like marketing videos. A good do-it-all kit that works for many situations keeping overall gear cost lower. The same can be said for family oriented use. It’s also “consumer user” easy to operate. >> You don’t need the best camera if you can’t take good shots. This allows a person to learn faster because it’s easier to use. A refreshingly detailed review on the EOS RP that doesn't have much of the sensational stuff and focuses just on the pros and cons of the system.
Personally, I think the only real advantages to the RP is its price and the lens ecosystem. It's more appealing in that regard either to people who want a new FF mirrorless camera that doesn't break the bank but also with access to a large lens catalog (even when adapted as the RF ecosystem right now mostly consists of premium "L" glass) or current Canon shooters who either want to upgrade from their aging body to an FF system or as a secondary camera that's smaller but also with an FF sensor. Bear in mind that it'll more than likely be stills-oriented shooters, as the RP's video leaves a lot to be desired. It's certainly usable, but those who are hybrid shooters may want to look elsewhere.
I think the RP's biggest issue is that it's competing in the same league as other cameras that offer a more well-rounded featureset, such as the Fujifilm X-T30 or the slightly more-expensive X-T3, which may not have the full chops of 35mm FF, but its APS-C sensor ain't no slouch either and can hold its own even up against the RP, not to mention it's hybrid appeal.
But I'm also not going to call this camera the "Canon EOS RiP", because while it's relatively unexciting, I'm sure Canon will sell a lot of these, and not just due to the word "CANON" on the front. The RF ecosystem seems to be growing at a relatively good pace and the RP might actually be a good option *if* you know exactly what you're looking at and understand its pros and cons. Don't buy this camera just because it says "CANON" on the front, but get it when it fits your purposes, for example like either as an affordable* FF starter kit or as a secondary body to an existing EF/RF kit, as I think that's where the RP is going to appeal most.
* - Affordable is relative in this case, as native RF glass can cost quite a bit as of this time, with the native kit offering being nearly as much as the RP body itself
You're right about an affordable lens system, at least in terms of older EF lenses. For example, no-one has as cheap a 50mm f1.8 as Canon and Nikon for their DSLRs...
Gordon Laing Indeed. I personally think the mirrorless systems could (and should) have a range of affordable primes that offer very good IQ at a price point that’s not out of reach for many.
It’s likely on the cards at this point, but it seems that upper-end premium glass are a priority for many mirrorless system manufacturers as of now, with some even having some more exotic solutions like f/0.95 glass or faster. I personally think those are more for technological showcases but maybe some people would find it useful, although I’m not sure as to exactly which group.
It's also an ideal travel camera if you have existing RF or EF lenses. My R6 is too large to travel with on a motorbike but the RP is perfect without sacrificing too much and I can use existing lenses and filters.
I'm so glad you came back with a full review of the RP. I trust your reviews more than any other RUclipsr's. I'm interested in moving to full frame from MFT and the fact that the RP also has focus bracketing is a win for me along with the size and price of the camera. I'm not sure, however, after seeing your high ISO samples, that it is truly a huge upgrade when it comes to noise. Still pondering.

They must have added a Full HD at 23.98p in a firmware update. I just bought my RP yesterday, and I have access to all 7 sizes including Full HD 23.98p and Full HD 59.94p to choose from in Movie mode. Thank god for firmware updates.
Regarding the loss of Dual Pixel AF when recording in 4K, I have found an excellent solution. Using DaVinci Resolve, I apply the Super Scale feature set to "x2" which upscales the HD footage to 4K. The results are quite astonishing. You may have to adjust sharpness and grain in post, but, in the end the quality is nearly indiscernible between the original HD footage and the 4K upscaled version. I use the Studio version of Resolve, so I'm not sure if the Super Scale feature is available in the free version of Resolve. But, unless you're going to project your footage on a theater screen, you can probably make it work for your online films, etc.

Murph why do you think it has bad bokeh? Lol the nifty fifty is phenomenal for the price the only real issue it has is color fringing which is expected at the price.
genuine question: I always heard that one of the reasons the fifties were so ... nifty was the flange distance on 35mm DSLR cameras, which was set by the mirror. Does the shorter flange distance on mirrorless meant that a new wider lens will be the new fifty, or will it still be 50mm that's the niftiest on FF? Is this why canon went with the "Pro" 50 and the "cheap(ish)" 35?

I’ve been saving for a Sony A7III, but price-point, ergonomics, full touch-enabled functionality, and the 3-axis tilt screen, won out on my personal Pro-&-Con matrix... and I love shooting the RP. I may end up getting an A7lV when it hits, but the only real missing elements for me is IBIS, Video time limit, and crop 4k. The EG-1 extender is like Clark Kent’s phonebooth, completely transforms the personality of this camera, especially with big glass. I feel like I’m back with my EOS 620 (my last Canon lol) and just enjoying photography again! (Posted on your 1st RP vid also)... Excellent overview!
Great review. I'm looking to simplify my current m43 gear and the RP with the 35mm looks like a great match for me. I'm going to stick to a one lens setup renting EF or RF lenses if required. I'm not too worried about the limitations as I only ever shoot in 1080 for video and would prefer not to spend too much time in post so good jpegs are ideal. I think your review has convinced me to give the RP a try. Thank you!

Just got my RP, planning to use 85f1.2L EF with adapter. Simple family portraits setup, no need to invest an arm and leg on RF lenses. IMO best combo for $2000US for my typical use. No other systems will give me the same shallow depth of field with dual pixel autofocus and Canon Colours. Don't print super big, don't need pull shadow +4stops.
Thanks for another comprehensive and well-presented review, Gordon. As a stills camera the RP seems to be more attractive than some initial opinions might have suggested, but I'm not regretting my decision to adopt the FE system a couple of years ago.
It's actually not really that bad of a stills camera. Though I think the RP's biggest issue (besides the obvious video limitations) is that it's competing against crop sensor cameras that are more well-rounded in terms of capabilities whilst also delivering very good IQ.
I think what surprised me the most was how close both the X-T30 and the a6400 got to the RP at very high ISOs.
Hi Gordon, know I'm late to the party but with the recent price drops the RP has come back to consideration. Even as a firm Canon fan I find it simply under baked - Rumors are late 2020 should see a further price drop on an improved version. Lets hope so... Stay safe, stay well.

It's a bargain right now. It's just because it doesn't do 4k properly, have IBIS or twin card slots that people tend to bash it based on specs.
Just bought an RP with 3000 shutter clicks for $762. Already love it for real estate photography and portaits, just for the screen and autofocus alone.
My camera... a good upgrade from the original 6D! Bought this summer and I am happy with it.

I am still using my RP as my back up camera. To my EOS R and EOS D5 SR. My back up camera seems to be the camera I use most. It smallness seems its best advantage. I use the 24-105 L mostly. I have the 15-35 2.8L but I tend to keep that on my EOS R.I also have the 16mm R 2.8. I dont tend to use that.
I think Canon has a real winner here with the EOS RP. Whats not to love about an affordable FF mirrorless camera?! If they can improve the 4k video & add IBIS, it could be the perfect travel/vlogging camera! I agree the rf 35 f1.8 is the perfect lens for it right now.
I’d like to add that there is very little support for the RP’s RAW files. Basically only Adobe Lightroom is the only option. I use Luminar 3. In my opinion this camera is a wonderful 1080 and JPEG machine. I was okay with the 1080, the lack of RAW support is a major downer. I shoot commercial images and hope I can use jpeg’s and bracket exposures together. I really wish cameras had jpeg, raw and dng. I think dng should be standard as having jpeg.
Thanks for this video. Like someone else mentioned it seems like the camera doesn't have much of advantage for lowlight, which is one of my top priorities. I think the design is compact enough for a mirrorless full frame and I think the lenses look nice, but some of them might need to be downsized. Overall, Canon has nice lenses, I don't know about price relative to other brands but one of the things that Canon needs to work on is sensor. I think there's still room for improvement, so many might be against Canon but I've been a Canon user for a while and have used other brands, and Canon doesn't seem to be far behind the competition. As always, I'm happy to see Canon's innovation, they aren't doing badly. Not a perfect camera, but I'm still excited. I hope many people who wanted to are able to switch to Full Frame now!

As usual, a fine review. Oddly, the penny dropped only towards the end of the video that the Canon is a full frame body! Seeing it compared with two APS-C bodies (and not outperforming in any way) confused me, but that’s not your fault - I should be more up to date.
The review certainly supported my decision to move from FF Sony A7II / A7R to Fuji XT2/20 and their excellent primes. Ergonomics and poor choice of compatible lenses drove that decision. But I also run Olympus EM1mk2 with Pro zooms for dynamic and distant subjects...also for low light situation, so long as the subject is reasonably static!

Thanks for this really helpful video Gordon. I have a Canon 60D which I am still fairly happy with but I am wondering whether to stick with Canon if I upgrade. I would like more than 9 focus points when I have my 60D on a tripod and take several images, each focused on different subjects in a still life composition, and then focus stack them. The focus bracketing feature in the Canon RP sounds brilliant.

Personally, I got the RP + EF adapter for $800 brand new not long ago, combining with my only lens Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art, that's my first ever camera setup and it's doing great for street photography in my perspective (I have no interest in making video myself) but all the reviews out there had made me felt bad about the camera purchase. I guess my only problem now is not being able to find the grip here in Aus and the wait for new Sigma RF lens haha, Canon's ones are bloody expensive

Gordon - Thanks for the review. I have a question. The R and RP have recently had a firmware upgrade, 1.4 and 1.3 respectively. It is supposed to improve the eye/face AF performance. Can you tell whether the 1.3 upgrade for the RP and the 1.4 upgrade for the RP are equally effective? Also, how close does the upgrade take the R/RP to contenders such a sony a7III or panasonic G9? Thanks.
I have an EOS RP and I can say that the difference is absolutely night and day.
I just bought my RP yesterday. And from what I've filmed so far, the AF is excellent. If you want to shoot in 4K, I have included in my comment above a means of upscaling HD to 4K with great results.

You mention that the RP has similar weather resistance as the 80D. I thought it was less than the 80D for weather sealing. Can you please confirm this? This has been one of the big reasons I was shying away from this body. Thanks!
Weather sealing is always a tough one to measure. I always ask the manufacturers though and this is what Canon told me.

Excellent review Gordon, as always in depth and very clear. for me they missed an opportunity, i have been waiting for a decent FF camera from Canon to use my great Canon lenses , i tried this camera in the store for few min and it felt too slow for my needs, the focus is no where near as fast as the competition and the whole point of a larger FF sensor is to have the advantage of better dynamic range and excellent high ISO performance, this camera does neither very well. the only advantage is the depth of field. I think Sony has better mature mirror less FF cameras. CANON RIP :)

Great video! But I do have one issue with is you keep saying you are happy with the JPEG images! How are the Raw images? Just like when shooting video shoot flat then in editing is where you bring the footage to life. Same goes for still images, shoot Raw for more dynamic range and edit it to your liking don't let the camera decide what to delete and edit for you!
Attractive “upgrade” for Eos 70D owners? Not me! Downgrading to 720p and a smaller battery isn't really attractive. Why, even my old 550D does 1080p with crop sensor lenses.
I think they're aiming it more at people with mostly EF lenses, rather than EF-S.
In other words, owners of very old full frame cameras? And Canon thinks they will accept the smaller battery? I find it surprising if they're really not interested in attracting APS-C owners. They could hardly expect us not to care about 1080.

Good balanced review, thanks Gordon. As a stills shooter with very little interest in video, I've found this camera to be fantastic. Upgrading from an ancient 20D, it has been a revelation. And being able to adapt the slew of EF lenses I already had meant that I didn't need to go mad and buy lots of new glass.
Out of interest, how did you find the EVF in your time with the camera? To my eye, it looks like a rather cold and slightly unsaturated image that doesn't really reflect what the eye sees. Not sure if this is just my model, all Canon RPs or a feature of mirrorless bodies in general.
Thanks Nick, yes I think you're a perfect customer for the RP, upgrading from a much older model. The EVF is fairly average, there's better ones on more expensive models, but I think it's ok. Maybe your picture style needs adjusting? I found the standard style was pretty saturated, but if it's your first EVF, you will find it looking quite different to an optical viewfinder. Over time, you won't notice anymore and like me will probably end up preferring the new tech.

Thank you for the video. I bought the RP and can take very sharp photos with its paired RP 100-500mm lense when photographing a still or slow moving subject with no objects in the way. However, I can't track an eagle in flight for a sharp photo and if I think I am sharply focused on wildlife, I may only be sharpley focused on a small darker in color branch.
Everyone says that it’s not good for video. If I don’t care about 24fps, will it be good for travel films? I use 30fps

Hi I just got a Canon RP and after charging the battery the screen is white I can change setting but cannot take pictures. Help

I am getting an adapter for the lens so it might be because it’s just the body. I was able to set date and change settings but when I go to take pictures it just shows a white screen

Do the current Sony or Fuji models have a focus stacking mode? That alone could make a huge difference to someone looking for a macro camera...
Remember there's focus bracketing which is the capture of the images and focus stacking which happens afterwards in software. Fujifilm has had focus bracketing for a while, but I don't think Sony has it.
Akshay Anand take a Look on the Olympus M1 mark 2. Fantastic stacking, IBIS, pre capture mode, extreme responsive.
@@777sib yes, the Olympus models also have focus bracketing AND can stack a bunch of them in-camera too. Panasonic's Post Focus mode also offers focus stacking, albeit using grabbed frames from video.
@@777sib and very expensive compared to an X-T30 or A6400. Out of my reach. Believe me I would love to get it.
in Australia the RP is $500 more than either a A6400 or X T30 body, so i think it will struggle, i feel the A6400 is where i'm heading next after many years as a Canon user, A-1, T-90 , Eos 1 were breakthrough Inspiring cameras , Canon seems to be following rather than leading now.

Thanks for the great video! I'll pass. Not exciting before, not exciting now. Price is relatively affordable in the FF mirrorless world, but seriously hampered to reflect that aswell. Pocket camera battery life, video options unimpressive, no IBIS... Focusing is close to Sony, i think i prefer Sony. Especially in 4K. Honestly, i'd pay more just for the better battery alone. I'm uncertain of the lenses (prices / sizes), the whole roadmap ahead. Sony is much more established in this regard. But the 35mm f1.8 is step in the right direction. Better ergonomics than with Sony.
Sony or Nikon is much more exciting to me. But to each their own.

I feel the exact opposite. Sony’s convoluted menu system, ergonomics where my fingers don’t fit between the lens & grip, and no fully articulating screen make me never want to pick up. Canon on the hand make me want to use it more often.
@@Davitor1 Yeah, i feel you. After Canon / Panasonic menus, something like Sony / Olympus feels unnecessarily convoluted (at first). Luckily, many manufacturers are now implementing the "My Menu" options, so that's good. Doesn't change the core issues in menu design, but it's a step in the right direction. The custom menu was good enough. Didn't really have the need to delve into menus after setting them.
Sony needs to improve their ergonomics, and they will. I don't see any other way in staying top-dog competitive, while addressing some of the criticism. But i've handled the A7 III few times (some photos and video), and it feels good in my small hands. Not great, but certainly good enough. I can dig it.
Flippy screen definitely has the best viewing angles, but it's not the be-all end-all anymore (for me atleast). It's best advantage is the front-facing, side and overhead view. However, flippy is more fragile than tilting screens, it can get more easier loose / damaged in due time. Also, ports / cables can easily get on the way. Plus the tilting screen is often more faster to set-up & use. Maybe front-facing use is the most useful, but even for that there's often wireless connections. View through Wifi in smart phone, frame yourself and tap to record / focus. Still, the flippy screen is great.
Surely, use that which compels you to use it. That which just begs to be used and feels great. Many points you mentioned would make Canon attractive. But not the likes of RP for me. The lack-luster features and poor battery are NOT something i'd be thrilled about in the long run. I say, poor battery is fine for small pocket cameras, but not for FF. 3-4 extra batteries? Well, they are small so that's good... However, i will not stand it anymore. Luckily there's many great mirrorless cameras with much better battery life, so yay! Great times with so many cameras nowadays. Well, it's already been great the past ~10 years in the mirrorless world. But now the whole industry is maturing up to different levels, and Canon has some catching up to do.

If you mainly film in 1080 say for SM then the RP and 35RF would make a great light weight combination to go on a smaller gimbal like the Weebill Lab.

Thanks for the review. A balanced pro and con review of the camera indeed for someone who is just beginning to learn photography. I have a Canon M50 right now and love it. Do you think it makes sense to make the switch to this camera? It seems like the RP and the M50 is "almost" identical with respect to features and I am struggling whether it makes any sense to sell the M50 and buy the RP. Any advice would be most welcome.

Great in depth review. I heard the reason EFS lenses grey out the 1080 video feature is due to vignetting of these lenses with the adapter.

I actually moved now into looking closely at the A6400 having just experienced its blazing fast focus etc. I do like the RP but now experienced it’s “laggy” feel regarding its review of the shot taken and seemingly slow focus compared to a6400. Was looking for FF but, hmmm, maybe not. !?!

Hi you mention people with older Canon camera would benefit upgrading to the RP upgrade. I do have an old 7D. But recently I got the Canon EOS M5 before the RP was released I was looking for a small mirrorless camera. Would it be a good idea to upgrade to the RP or would I be ok just keeping the M5?
I would be interested in the AF performance of the EOS R/RP and that of telephoto lenses -> 400mm and longer ;)
Hmmm I don't know, is it really possible that this full frame sensor does not give you any benefit over APSC in higher ISO? Dpreview iso test shows significantly less colour noise vs a smaller sensor.
I'm now hesitant to upgrade from Lumix G80.

What about the sensor that has no cover over it? When changing lenses it is completely exposed becoming a dust magnet. That was a big mistake and makes it far less appealing to me. Also, no in-body image stabilization.

Yes, but as I explained in the video, if you use EF-S lenses, yur photos will be 10 Megapixels and you also won't be able to film in 1080p.

If you adapt EF-S lenses onto a full-frame body, they will operate in a cropped mode, which for still photos means a much reduced resolution. So if you're sticking with EF-S lenses, get a cropped frame body, in this case, the 90D.

Gordon love your work, but i have a request Please! start adding some background music to make it better, only vocals kind of gets boring to listen to after sometime and hence my mind defocus and focuses onto something else
I'm torn between doing this or leaving them vocal only. If I was presenting fun, silly videos, then yes, I'd do music, but I'm trying to get across a LOT of technical information like a work presentation, so I think music could make it harder for some to understand, especially if English isn't their first language.

Question re: 2.30 seconds to anyone - if the 'shutter' is down or closed when the mount is exposed on the R is it possible to blow dust out using a ' dust bomb blower' or will that damage the shutter. If this is bad practice won't the shutter gather dust quicker because it's more exposed to the environment.
I've never experienced dust on the shutter, but a gentle blow should be ok. What you want to avoid is physical contact.

Gordon Laing I’m often wary of stopping down more than f11 due to diffraction so the focus bracketing would be a boon on my jewellery images. I can see it becoming a primary body. Link noted : )

Just bought an RP and never buying a Canon again. The viewfinder is 2 shades more cyan than the evf. Shooting in black and white is like shooting in black and green.
Gordon, What is your opinion of the RP vs M50, since you mention the Sony and Fuji, do you think it’s worth upgrading from M50 to the RP.
What do you want from a camera?
I do shot some sports activities, which I would probably keep the M50 for that... Family stuff, portraits...

@@cameralabs It has NOT. I just wanted a bigger body, the lenses and flashes I'm using are bigger than the camera. I know the RP doesn't shoot fast, I don't mind keeping the M50, just wondering if the RP provides that better image quality, or at least enough to warrant the upgrade.
