I bought my RP when they first came out. The guys at the camera shop just shook their heads and I'm sure were thinking I was an idiot. Fast forward to today, I still use it, still love it, and would still recommend it to anyone who loves to take pictures and doesn't want it to break the bank. I've been an amateur photog since 1974 and have had several cameras. I would not trade or sell this one!

Nikon Z5 has more stops for light though and it can really help in low light and bright conditions. Able to get the details from shadow without over blowing bright objects better.

Its good to see someone who actually talks about the camera and its uses. I have seen so many reviews just slate it, or compare it to other models with just the specs. So yes, spec don't look the best but until you use it, you will never know.

I love the RP and it got me onto RF glass. If you have big hands like me get the body extender or a dual battery extender that gives it the perfect size and double the battery. It has focus bracketing also which is a pro feature. I am upgrading though this year to the R8 which is the replacement for the RP. Same exact size, now with duel pixel, digic 10 instead of 8 and 4k without crop. I love the compact size of them. The best camera for me is the one I'll actually bring with me, and due to its small size, I will actually bring this with me and get the shot.

I got mine refurbished for $599 from Canon about a year ago, upgrading from a Nikon D5300. It was a massive upgrade all around - the ISO performance is amazing, having a full frame camera is amazing, and having an EVF is amazing. Really happy with it.

I used the RP to shoot concerts and shows and clubs for 3 years before upgrading to the R6 Mark II. And there are times where I wish I didn't sell the RP, because I felt like I could take that camera everywhere and not be too stressed about it if anything bad would happen to it.

Just ordered a used RP to adapt my EF glass to. A lot of what people moan about won’t concern me in real world use. Ok, so the dynamic range isn’t quite as good as other models and you can’t lift the shadows by 5 stops etc. Who gets it so wrong to have to mess with your exposure so much? If i can move a stop or so, I’m good.
The main points that the RP covers well, will probably work for most people, but as you say, people don’t give it a chance after reading the spec sheet
    Great video; thankyou!

I had (and still have) an RP and bought a Z6 as the same time. The RP was lighter, generally easier to use, more ergonomic, and had slightly better color balance than the Z6. The main knock on the RP for me was its SLOW fps for photographing action. I preferred the Z6 over the RP for shooting crew (rowing team) shots. I am using both cameras for fixed video for now. I have had thoughts of getting a 2nd RP body for consistent video.
I have bought new RF lenses recently and they are just AMAZING! Canon now has a TON of new RF lenses!! They let in much more light and are about 1/2 as large and heavy compared to their non-mirrorless counterparts! A light RP body still drives these lenses excellently well. I intend to get an R8 to give me an even lighter R body that adds higher FPS for stills for action portraits. A RP would make for a competent backup.

I buy the RP during covid shortage. I felt in love with the ergonomics and is small for body. I am not into big large heavy camera and lens. I was really happy with my micro fourth third cameras. But I make a lot of night photos and having a FF sensor make sense. The fact that it does not have ibis and the body was not weather seal was kind of a deal breaker for me way before spec sheets. I use it with a 50mm and this little bad boy follow me every where and in any condition. In the last two years I make most of my photos and video with it. This bad boy never let me down in harsh condition snow storms, freezing cold, big rain. Personally I don't need all the bell and wesel of the best camera, because I never use more than 25%of the capacity of a camera. I past most of the time my eyes in the viewfinder than scrolling deep into the menu. And the amazing thing about it, is that you don't have to brake the bank to buy one.

For the money is a great choise for beginner photographer who want a full frame look with some compromises as small battery, meh Dynamic Range, crop and bad af in 4k etc. The lenses are a bit expensive, because no third party lenses. I was lucky to find online an RF 85 1.8 Yongnuo for my Eos R. I jump straight away and bought it aprox 230$ because I know they are hard to find. And so far I'm impressed with it. It's the same situation with the Nikon P1000, people mess everything up but in practice it gives great results, I have photos of the P1000 that some professionals don't get right when it comes to saying which camera I took that photo with. In the case of the RP, I exchanged the R8 for an RP because of the image quality in the photos, the R8 disappointed me in terms of colors, the RP has something a+l. The R8's features are a 10, but I prioritize final image quality and I love challenges. I'm not a big fan of ease in photographic cameras. The P1000 doesn't have excellent images, but with the configuration I have and proper editing, I made a delicious lemonade out of a lemon, haha...

Thank you so much for your review. I bought my RP last week out of desperation, when the local shop could not help my 70D with the stuck shutter button. (Note: setting fences at horse shows and taking pictures with sandy hands is not recommended.) I was skeptical of the new RP, as it felt so light and without substance - after dragging the heavier camera around all those years. I got over my skepticism very quickly though, and my aging bones appreciate the lighter body! I love the size, but can see that a person with bigger hands would like the extra grip. Your review restored my faith in my choice of camera as so many deflating reviews floated into my feed. On another note... I played around with the 70D and unstuck the shutter on my own. I resolve to try to keep my cameras cleaner from now on and try to use clean hands when shooting!

The biggest problem with the RP is that it has too many controls and not enough control. Yes, it has a lot ot features, but they are so difficult to use that the camera gets in the way of trying to take a photo. If you take the time to learn the menu system, and then the time every three months to refresh your memory, the camera works OK, but if you are a more casual user, this is a difficult camera to use. For example, switching from auto to manual focus should be a single button press, not a 20 minute dive into a menu system, in the dark, because that's when the autofucus doesn't work.

Where did you see canon selling the RP for 599??? I have been tracking it for months and always 999 new and 899refurb for body only.
Honestly what makes me mad is the ever increasing "focus " ;) on videography. As a photographer who shoots, well still pictures, with zero interest in video, the emphasis on video is completely irrelevant. I and many other photographers (as opposed to videographers) just don't give a fudge. I just wish "reviewers" would at least make mention if their review is primarily based on video.

  • @Drmikekuna

Some years ago, I watched a review video from a famous RUclips photo couple. The man essentially said that everyone needed to dump their camera for the super high-resolution camera they were reviewing because someday, you may need to blow up your images for some sort of imaginary gallery show. OK, that was when I stopped watching that channel. I'm a stills shooter. Any pro camera from 2009 and most cameras from the last 5 years take fantastic photos. Granted, newer cameras have better low-light performance and more sophisticated autofocus. However, those features are often not needed, and there are always workarounds. Years ago, I reviewed the Canon 6D II, which uses a sensor similar to the RP. Then, everyone was up in arms as the dynamic range wasn't as good as some other cameras. However, it was better than the 5D III, the de facto king of general-purpose cameras in the day, and the 5D III took fantastic images. Will I be taking shots at the Olympics? No. Will I ever need to blow up my photos to 6-foot prints? No. Will I ever need to take images in near darkness and without a flash? Likely not. Thanks for the great review!

I shoot landscapes and cityscapes during the daylight hours. Wanted to delve into full frame and the RP made budget sense. I have a Canon R10 as well that has RF lenses which will fit the RP, so, it was a no brainer. I can slap on my RF 35 f1.8 IS and start shooting once my camera arrives, getting it set up for photos. The R10 is setup for photo and video. I have yet to shoot video. I also use Fujifilm because of the Film Simulations built in. Eventually, I will trade it all in on one specific body with a couple lenses. I'm 70 yrs old don't need to lug around all this gear.

The canon rp was great for the price, even when it first released, $1000 for a full frame camera was unheard back then. The problem I saw was that canon released this budget camera and at the time canon only had top of the line L series lenses. Everything that I love about the RP (size, design, weight) is there on the R8. However i do care about video, and that’s the reason why I’ll get an R8. But only until more refurbs become available, and the price continues to drop on them. In the meantime I’ll happily continue on my RP.

Coming from 6D and 5D2, I'm pretty happy with the RP. So light and small with the RF 70-200 f/4 compared to a full frame EF system. Not to mention RP with RF 35 f/1.8 for light travel. Both these lenses have image stabilization, so lack of IBIS is not a big deal. Just remember to bring several batteries, they drain relatively quickly.

The RP is one of my favourite cameras and it's also my most expensive camera haha. So glad that you covered it was always confused why people always said it was such a bad camera since my experience with it has always been positive (well apart from it's rather short feeling battery life but I'm used to the luxury of several weeks if not months on a 10d or 20d). I mostly use vintage lenses on it because it's mirror less and it works so well with them especially with that canon colour science. My other mirror less camera is a Nikon j2 and it's quite interesting to see how far mirror less cameras have come from 2012/13. Very cool video!

Canon's weird marketing and irritatingly or deliberately slow releases of practical RF lenses got me confidently shifting to Sony. I still shoot with Canon but my preference now is definitely Sony. The latter has better video functions, AF, camera ergonomics and lenses.
Canon's APS-C cameras and lenses suck.
For full frame cameras, Canon seems to have two distinct camps -- Full-time demanding professionals who are willing to spend a ton of money on heavy, exotic lenses such as the 28-70mm and 24-105mm f2.8, and others who don't know what they are getting into.
Who in the world want to shoot at small aperture lenses such as f7.1 using full frame cameras?! Many of Canon lenses have gone in that direction.
I feel Canon has neglected serious and advanced enthusiasts who are not paid professionals. We want practical lenses, those that can shoot at f4 but yet with useful focal lengths. For eg, why can't Canon innovate an RF 17-50mm f4? This will make a great walkabout and travel lens.
How about giving us advanced photography hobbyists an ultra wide prime at 12mm f4 that is small, light and affordable? We don't want a 10-20mm that depletes money from our bank accounts!
Where are the RF 35mm and 50mm, and 85mm f/1.4? None from Canon ever since they released the first R-mount camera and RF lenses back in 2019. That's 4 very long years already!
I'm slowly selling off some more of my Canon glasses and inching closer to more and more Sony ones.

My Piece of thought of on RP is that if yopu're an event shooters, avoid this camera. you will be better off with a much newer apsc mirrorless camera. the Autofoucs is slow, features are way limted, buttons and dials arent great and the body grip is really small and not deep enough ( mind you, i have small hands ). Eos R is a better option if you are okay with used cameras

  • @JJARCHIE

i bashed it and still to this day due to
its low burst , i operate well when its around 8-10fps , but not 5 ( thats like damn low, and 4 with afc ?? ).
the battery life is also terrible for its price range , i go through my friend's fz100 a73 around 2-3 hour and i go through my fw50 a6400 around 1-1,5 hour a battery , that rp will prob not last an hour with me. and thats me doing just photos
the small size is outweighed by the fact that ef lenses are massive and RF lenses are 3x the contemporary option and ALSO BEING LARGE
lets not even talk about the noise which is barely a step up from an apsc mirrorless.
(ignore if you dont do video)
video has been increasingly asked for by client and most fo the time you find jobs solo doing video and photo, and a cdaf 1,7x crop 4k with no log just wont do.
a few people did bash it fully , i simply dont find the specs good enough.
theres a reason it launched at 1299 and got down to 599 most of the time , while the older "only apsc" a6400 maintains the USED price higher while being priced lower when brand new

I have been working as a lithographer printing for artists for 31 years and I know what I see. Photographers think they do great work in Lightroom and photoshop but they have no clue. They destroy the pictures a lot of the time and it no longer looks like what they saw but rather some artificial plasticky unreality. They are not photographers they are photoshoppers. After working with artists for so many years I now understand how few of them are sensitive to color and light. You think you can compete with the jpeg engine and the auto in camera? Maybe you can. A computer can think much faster than a human being and therefore to keep the camera on auto if its a good camera can do the job for you much better than most people can do. I cant use the fuji XF10 on auto , cos it is oversharp in camera. I keep it sometimes in p mode with sharpness minus 2 and sometimes minus 1. Besides that the camera is fantastic. After using both the RP and the Canon 6D, I prefer the images from the 6D especially in terms of high iso noise control, but the RP is solid.
To me the RP was Canon's relatively inexpensive way to get people into the new RF mount system and so of course Canon were gonna hold back on a lot of features and people were comparing it to things like the A7iii that was released the previous year, rather than looking at it for what it was.
Canon do seem to be the worst offenders when it comes to which features they choose to leave out of their cameras though.
With that said, from a photography standpoint, especially with some of the gorgeous EF glass on it, it definitely does the job and if I could snag one for around 600, I'd be happy too. Great Video🖖

The night before filming, I usually jot down a few talking points in the notes app on my phone - something like, "build quality, stabilization, image quality, etc." I'm usually able to film most of my talking points in a day. I spend the next few days shooting sample photos and videos from the camera that's being reviewed, plus I have to find some time to film some b-roll of the camera.
