The canon RP has a feature where as you look through the view finder you can take you thumb and glide it on the right side of the touch screen to focus on various subjects…all without lifting your eye from the view finder. In the view finder you will see the focus box switch and lock onto whatever you slide you thumb across
Man I love the way you explained everything. No rambling just straight to the point. I appreciate this video. I stayed engaged the entire time and I understood everything you were talking about. I wish I ran into you sooner 🤦🏽♀️
Nice Vid. I’ve had my RP for about 7months - colors, focusing/sharpness, and compactness are all A++. Even the lowlight/high ISO is quite solid. Only downsides are probably the battery life, slow FPS. But if one’s looking for a FF at a reasonable price, the RP is solid choice.
@@ShaquilleNoel it really depends. If you shoot video, better go with Sony but if you're mostly a photo shooter, you can't go wrong with the RP. The RP is cheap but the good RF L lenses are expensive. Most of the cheap and fast RF lenses are primes, so if you prefer zoom lenses go with Sony as they have more 3rd party options from Tamron or Sigma. Other than those factors, the RP will not disappoint!
Hi, I'm writing this as of June 2023. I am into low light astro-photography. I was shooting with a used 6D that had great dynamic range and low light capabilities. But my 6D was old and I would get hotpixels sometimes. So I got the RP (it was cheaper than 6D mark ii and was mirrorless). In the 1 year that I have used it, I am beyond impressed by it. All my prime lenses for 6D work on RP with the adaptor. Dynamic range is not as good as 6D, but is good enough. My 6D is getter at capturing airglow than RP. Now, I am thinking of venturing into time-lapse for astro-photography where I can get away with shooting in 1080p without any cropping
I have been teeth deep in reviews and research for months now, trying to find the best camera for me and this video just put the last nail in the coffin. I'm getting this camera! Thank you!
I have the RP a year now. Upgraded from a crop sensor and I love everything about it. I love your review and you're right about everything. It's a great camera at a great price!
Hi Belinda I had a Nikon d7200, now I'm looking for a camera that will be smaller but better. everyone praises the Sony A6400 but I'm not sure if it's a good choice. I like the Canon RP very much because the price with 24-105 4-7.1 great is. is Dynamic Range as bad as people say? Will it be better than Nikon d7200? Greetings from Germany Tom
While the RP may not have a joy stick you can use touch and drag while looking through view finder. You can set it up to use only right or left side, this way your nose won’t interfere or move focus point. This is a very easy and quick way to move focus point.
I bought RP to film my piano videos. So idea was to use flip screen and connect piano directly using microphone port. But flip screen covered by mic jack. So I found better way then using flip screen for vlog purpose. Mobile app. It allows to frame, start/stop video select focus points. Basically you have almost full control over the camera using smart phone.
You can use the EvF and tap your finger on the screen at the same time and it will select the tracking point you touched in reference to where you touched on the screen
Man! You've convinced me sir! I am currently with a Canon M50 and I want to upgrade without breaking the bank. So as soon as I see one oft those RP on sale, be sure that I will grab it! Thanks a lot my man!
FYI, you can program the 4 way joy pad to do several things, including moving your focus point while shooting through the viewfinder. You don't have to bring the camera down and use the touch screen. Please do some research and you'll find this camera can do a lot more than you think it can. Just don't expect it to perform like a pro level camera. I traded in a Rebel T4i for my RP when it first came out and I've not been disappointed. Thank you for a good video!
Dear Robert, I'd like to appreciate and thankful to you if you could say something about choosing Canon Rp or Lumix GH5M2 or Fujifilm X-T4 for both amateur photo and video works. May be photography is at the centre of my enjoyment. Thank you!
@@johnlin3145 I can't use the active touch area while shooting through the view finder. I'm left eye dominant so my nose touching the screen keeps moving the focus point to the right side of the screen. But, that's a good thought. Thanks!
I've been a canon shooter for over 20 years. Not a professional, but still have a good little collection of EF lenses that I stopped using when my digital rebel died out on me --50 mm prime lens, a great 60mm macro lens, and no use for them! Haven't gotten a new body because I REALLY want a full frame camera.... This sounds like an awesome choice for me, your detailed video really helps! I only want it for pics of my girls and my own personal use, and being able to use my older lenses make it the perfect option right now... thanks!!
I think the RP is a fantastic option for you, but I'd also take a look at the EOS R. Those are dropping in price and are starting to be a good value as well. If you can stretch the budget it is a better option.
Still excellent for me in 2024 RP + 24-240. Beats my old APS-C with 18-270 no matter what. eg cropped FF better that APS-C full image! Great for travel grab shots. I've added R50 + 100-400 for the odd long reach need.
One thing I recently discovered with the RP if you shot one shoot instead of servo in autofocus mode if you half press the shooter you can easily change your subject of focus without touching the screen using the viewfinder. Hope this helps great video.
I mine brand new in May and sold my Nikon D5300 and D5200, not even looking back on my decision AT ALL. Using it primarily for shooting my films, photography, and client work. I also figured out how to get the best out of 4k in 24fps and it's as if the crop isn't even there. I have ZERO gripes and it's also because I did my research beforehand and I never pass up on gems in any scenario. Good review by the way!
Great video, just a note man, when you want to rotate your screen, instead of unplugging stuff just pull the screen back a bit and rotate to whichever direction you need, it will save you a ton of time.
Just scored an RP at $599 refurbished. Can't wait to try it out. I am venturing into video and this will serve for that as well as a backup camera for my 5DSr.
Great and honest reviews, thanks! I've finally ordered a used RP with 35mm 1.8 RF, as a light and small go-to-camera for family pictures, traveling, fishing and so on. Perfect addition for my two R5 (that are way too overpowered, big, heavy and expensive for those purposes).
You can flip the screen without turning it all the way to the side so you dont have to unplug the headphones or mic, I do it with my EOS M50 all the time for youtube vids 🤘🏽
Had the camera for a few months now and I thoroughly enjoy it. Video gets the job done, where I think this camera shines is it’s photography work, at least for me. I really like the shots I get from it.
It’s so underrated!! If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you get yours for? If I was on canon system fully, I’d 100% always have an RP as my daily run around camera for photos. It’s a solid piece of gear! Thx for watching
After watching your video on this full frame, you cleared up a lot of confusion for me. I was under the impression it did not do Timelapse. The only feature missing is the 120fps for slow motion. But I’m still loving my 90d. I can look into this one body only and buy the adapter for EF lens
You did miss the fact that you can click and drag the focus point, even if you have your eye on the eyepiece. I bought this a year ago, and I'm enjoying this camera so much.
The make-up for there being no joystick is the touch and drag focus on the monitor while using the EVF, you can set it to be used on half the screen so you can drag easier (I might be way late to the party)
there is a setting the camera that when you look though the viewfinder you can use your thumb on the edge of the touch screen like a joy stick. works better than a joystick I think.
@@DominicPhillip you should be able to set the area that you use as a touchscreen to a specific portion of the screen so your nose doesn't effect it. Example, just the right or left side or just the top/bottom right/left corner.
I have an RP and an R6. The RP is a great buy if you are staring out or even as a daily for the more advanced user. The touch to drag helps a lot to move the focus point.
Excellent talking points, this is definitely an overlooked camera. I just sold my 5D2 that I had for the past 10 years and replacing with a refurb RP for $500 and a refurb 50/1.8 for $79.
Called Canon today, just ordered the same RP body and a used separate 50mm lens over the phone with the same thought process as you, thanks Dominic! Had a low budget and needed a full Frame sensor, 24+mp, with a flip out screen all under $2g. Have specific needs as an artist to photograph my paintings for enlargement prints, as well as shoot art process video for social media. You confirmed my thoughts. Will see how it goes!
I think for under $2000 it's a really hard setup to beat. Especially now with the newer Canons dropping, I'm really starting to see these come down in price.
Great video mate. Thanks for that. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting the RP as I’m a canon user and then I almost got the A7iii but after hearing about the shutter issues I’ve decided to stick with Canon. I’m now convinced this is the camera upgrade for me. Cheers
It’s a big jump to full frame, but honestly the eos R is dropping in price too. That camera is a really good value for the money so I would check that out as well.
I was actually watching reviews on the rp body for the past couple of days .. And ur video really helped me understand the ins n outs of the camera...... I am planning to get into wedding photography so yess i am satisfied n will try to buy this camera body ❤️
I have a m50mark ii ita old now but even then it has the landscape feature thing where the info flips wjth the orentaion of the screen i love the feature
Hi Dominic, thanks for your explanation about the RP. Do you know the difference in focus tracking between the RP and the Sony A7r II? I own a A7r II and one lens, the Tamron 24mm. I'm in doubt if I would switch to a RP or to buy a telezoom on the A7. Greetz from the Netherlands.
I just stumbled on your video and I loved it!! thank you for your great review. I am about to buy a new camera and I am deciding between the Canon RP or the Nikon Zfc as I love the retro style and the shooting speed which is really good. I do sometimes take some sport photos but mainly I take travel and street photos. which would you recommend? I do love Canon so I am not very happy about moving to a system that I don't know..... Also, I would like to ask you what website would you suggest to buy used cameras. thank you very much
Both are great options. I’d highly suggest thinking about which camera system you’re more likely to grow into and stick with in the future. Because it’s all about investing in good lenses that will last you a long time, even when you want to upgrade bodies. For that reason I’d say go canon, but only because I like the tech they’re pushing in new bodies. Nikon is behind. Also, for websites check out bh photo used section and adorama. Hope that helps!
Great video. I think this is a fantastic camera for photography. It is just important to not underexpose the images, because you don't have as many reserves as on an R5 or A7 III etc. At nearly half the price of an EOS R, it has a fantastic value imo.
Totally agree! Nailing exposure is crucial just like you said, but that also may be a great learning tool for the newer photographer. Less room for error here. I think the A7R2 is also a great camera for the used price now. Thanks for watching
All cameras in the r line (well, not the r3) have touch and drag. This is where you're looking through the evf and you're dragging your finger across the touchscreen to move the focus point. Try this out. It is one of the defining features of Canon cameras and you won't go back to a joystick. This is different than live view photography. In live view where you tap is where it focuses but it's not dragging a cursor around.
@@DominicPhillip you can set the zone for the touch. For example I'm a left eye shooter so my drag zone would be on the left. If I was a right eye shooter I would pick the right zone to touch. That prevents your face from moving the focus point. I am trying to become a right eye shooter because my left hand is usually cradling my lens.
Great video with valid information! Very true, it has some downsides but put in the hands of a professional or a good photographer, with not much budget, they can do magic with it. Thanks for this video. Cheers! 😉
@05:52 Umm, my ‘ancient’ Fuji XT-1 switches the info when you hold it in portrait orientation. Just sayin. Yeah, this should have had a joystick, again, Canon Cripple hammer! 😳🙄😂 But, I think one can move the focus points with their thumb, with eye to the viewfinder? I’m not sure? Peace
Hi I’m just starting out, coming from an iPhone 8 (lol I know) where I’ve been doing street photography around london. Ready to upgrade, would love full frame if poss. My budget is limited and at around the price point of the RP. Do you think it’s a good option for the task at hand… street photography night and daytime, architecture, landscape? I’m primarily focused on city photography at the moment, capturing city life. Thank so much Dave
It can be great, but if you're strictly shooting street there are some other fantastic options out there. I like the Ricoh GRiii, the Fuji X100 line, and I like the Sony A72. All great cameras in that same price point.
I too noticed the slow burst rate with eye tracking on fast moving subjects. i’m wondering if a faster card would help or is the processor the problem? I plan to test but maybe someone already has.
I’m looking to get this camera for little wedding work and Family portrait work. You think it would be good? Eventually down the line i will upgrade but i think this is a good start
Do you think this is still worth it now? I have the canon eos 200d. with an ef 18-55mm f2.8 lens. Been thinking of upgrading my camera. Have had it fo 9 years now.
Great video. You raise some excellent points. I currently have older Nikon and Canon APS-C setups with 2 bodies each and a equal amount of lens. I have been shotting DX going back to the release of the Canon 20D. I still have numerous APS-C DSLR's . The only camera shop you can see cameras at these days around me is Best Buys. We were recently in Maul and while my older DSLR's did great in RAW, it was challenging when we went to evening functions, shows and a Luau. I went in to see the 90D, but I after not getting a new camera in 5 years, I would really like to experience Full Format and Mirrorless. I am an amateur photographer since the 70's and do mostly people and scenery photos. I also enjoy shooting RAW and putting the RAW images through Lightroom and Photoshop. There are numerous options. I am leaning towards the Canon RP or R6. Also I have not ruled out Nikon Z5 or Z6. The more I read the more confusing it gets. I love the feel of the Canon R6 in my hands. I don't love the price. I am really more into taking still photos as opposed to videos. So I am not concerned about 4K cropping. My major concerns about the RP is no protection of the sensor, cheaper build quality and potential dynamic range issues. So my 3 big questions that I can’t really answer 1) would the R6 be overkill. 2) Would the IQ be noticeably better on the R6? 3) Would I be better off getting the L glass with the RP vs the kits glass on the R6? Would welcome and appreciate feedback for from you since you seem very accomplished. Thanks
Hi, thanks for watching and for the comment. Hard to answer your questions but I'll try my best. R6 may be overkill depending on what you shoot. But that's really subjective, so you have to self evaluate that one. But if it were between the two, I'd definitely spend the money on L glass with the RP. It will be loads better than the R6 with kit lenses. My philosophy is always to go GLASS OVER BODY! I can shoot a $500 camera with L glass for a wedding right now. The IQ on the r6 will be better, especially in low light and speed with autofocus, but I'd still take the RP with good lenses anyway. Cheers
Nice video. Make sure you have the latest firmware update & use SanDisc Extreme Pro card with a small U3 symbol, the 3 is in the U, & you’ll have no issues shooting in 4K.
@@DominicPhillip Absolutely 100% 😊 I've heard the rumours and hoping dome deals become available for black Friday in November but i know at the moment there are problems and delays with a shortage of components and shipping. I'll hold out until end of November and reassess 😂
Don’t get this camera for tutorials. It’s not good for video. Check out the Sony Zve10… I think it’ll fit all your needs. ruclips.net/video/bQtkEb6tV6M/видео.html
I found the EF lens adapter the way to go for me. I have a stable of L lenses and with the adapter the little RP is a great Landscape work horse. Need more battery power, I use an external PD battery Pack with Dummy battery inserted into the camera. Works Great! I just love the size of this little gem and it does so many things well. Had the R and the RP just works better for my hand. Thanks Dominic for your take on this handy little camera. I was one of the lucky ones that got the RP with the RF 24-105 lens on a brief special online for under 1K. Couldn't pass it up. For a travel lens that isn't quite L quality, the RF 24-240mm, is a great range. Just be aware that at 24mm there is vignetting in raw with this lens. If you don't mind the adapter buying used EF lenses is really the way to go right now.
well i see the EOS RP and its capability of using EF mounts as a huge upgrade, sadly the EF/RF Filter Adapter cost too much still. But for example imagine buying the filtermount with your preffered filter you mostly need and add for 90$ a clear filter attachment. Its basically clear glass, expensive for sure, but your EOS R sensor is now pretty awesome sealed from dust! The EOS RP is coming next week, i cant wait to see the difference to my 550D i still use (and hate already, i think the sensor malfunctions partially already, the high ISO performance is already much weaker than i was used to anyways). For now the basic EF adapter will do it, but i hope for acceptable 2nd hand prices of this adapter/filter kit anytime soon.
@@DominicPhillip i guess the possibility to „seal“ your sensor with a clear filter or the filter you need and no need for special filters for all your lenses are the main reason they are that expensive, sadly one thing they missed out: specialized filters! (Like the ones used for astrophotography), but i guess the target group is too small to make enough profit with it and they use anyways big filter wheels and more often than not astro and mono cameras
@@DominicPhillip btw i absolutely love the Eos RP - ofc, despite a lot better high iso performance than my 550D - i somehow think i still want a stabilized sensor - would only be the R6 as „cheap“ as the RP but „only“ 18MP and even better iso performance But in overall… im impressed, only the autofocus, made some „bad“ lenses usable again which were a desaster on my 550Ds 9 AF points, finally a nice and usable live view with awesome features like focus and shoot with tapping the area you want to focus and many other neat features. I mean with MagicLantern i had most stuff also on the 550D, but after getting used to the UI of the RP and optimizing it for my needs as good as possible, WOW! Biggest downsides in a nutshell: - battery life, got already 2 batteries, thinking about a 3rd (astrophotography beginner) - no electronic shutter except for full auto/scene mode. In some home/indoor usages where i shoot a ton of photos but probably 1-2% usable, i would love to reduce shutter wear (or how is this with mirrorless nowadays?!) - no in body stabilizer, not even 3 axis only - price… well, lets be honest, its still expensive as fk! But considering its still one of the cheapest ways to get into full frame… well, its just ok (not so canons filter and RF lens prices) And somehow, as i got a RF 50mm 1.8… i never believed i would want that, but i sent back the RF EF adapter within the last days possible because the multifunction ring on the RF lenses. I got now a EF adapter with the multifunction ring, awesome thing and this was worth 100€ extra because as soon i changed from RF to EF lens i missed instantly this ring (or refocused unintentionally, i love the idea of a focus ring with more usability than focussing)
Well, I just bought RP with 50/1.8 in 2022 because it is still the smallest and lightweight full frame camera. There is Nikon Z5 for the same price, but it almost 1.5 times heavier. And 50/1.8 for 160$ just dont have any competition. And Canon RP does have weather sealing.
Great review and I totally agree with you - even today, in 2022, this is the best full-frame camera for the money. The two things that I have an issue with are the 5fps rate and the battery life. The latter is somewhat easy to fix - just buy a couple of spare batteries (though you still have to change them). The low fps is, unfortunately, not something that can be dealt with. That said, I've still managed to get some good wildlife/bird shots with the RP, but it's hit and miss. If it had 20fps like the new R6, I wouldn't trade this for the world. Best regards!
Thanks for watching and well said! The fps and autofocus does make the camera a bit sluggish, but depending on your photography needs this can still delivery some excellent results. Great Value!
COnsidering i pretty much only do macro and landscape, this camera is perfection for me, especially with it's focus stacking. Could never need another camera honestly.
If I want to try a amateur status photography should I just extend my Canon M50 lenses, consider getting a Nikon d610, or attempt to go with this Canon RP?
Do you need video at all? Or strictly photos. The problem with going with the rp over the m50 is the lenses are more expensive for full frame. Better quality, but more of an investment.
You're content strikes a great balance between technical, real life experience and actual fun factor ! Very entertaining and I learned a lot. I have the RP and love it, but have also had interest in the Fuji X100V which I see you've owned and reviewed too (great vid!). Between these two I have three questions.... For picture "quality" output (color, tone, contrast), user experience and fund factor which do you prefer and why? Thanks!
Thanks for watching and the kind words! To be honest with you, I think for photography overall I like the RP better. More flexibility, better autofocus, and better screen/controls. BUT…. I took more pictures with the X100, carried it with me more, and overall was way more fun. The Fuji is limited by the fixed lens, but is really is a fun little camera to own and shoot!
@@DominicPhillip Note, you can get a NEW Canon 40mm pancake lens and use with the adapter, for fixed lens setup, cost of lens = $115.00. Alternatively, get a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L ii, for about $1800 new. One lens with adapter. All you'll ever need. Serious setup, AND if you ever wanted to use that lens on a Nikon Z, there's an adapter for that--or sell it to a Nikon Z user.
Hey I was considering this camera as an entry level for landscape and maybe some wildlife photos, but after watching your video maybe this isent the best to capture in dark and nature lighting. What camera would you surgest as an entry for landscape and wild life photos ??
Hey Jen. I actually think it will be ok for you if you’re shooting on a tripod. Because I’m those instances you will slow down the shutter speeds instead of raising up to higher ISO’s. This camera only struggles over 6400 iso. So if you stay under that you should be good. Other options though is the Fuji xs10. A great camera for the value.
@@RichieColemanSr I think an Canon M50 would be perfect for what you’re looking for. You can pick them up used for under $500. You just can’t do 4k video on it because it sucks. 1080p video is great though!
@@RichieColemanSr hmm… that does make it a little tricky because the m50, Zv1, and zve10 are all smaller. I don’t know that they make a vertical grip battery pack for those… you may want to look at the fujis. Like the XS10. Those are a bit bigger and fully loaded. They can do 4k video and really nice photos as well. Just get a good lens and you’ll be set
Great review...I agree the RP is a great camera...Its my first choice in a working FF body...I use it with both EF and some RF glass...Note: two cards slots is a non issue for me...I would rather just have two or more bodies and change out the cards often...( I don't do video)...Cheers
a lot different. The Rebel was built with much less quality in terms of build quality. The sensors are also much different, full frame vs apsc. I'd 100% go RP between those two.
I am glad that i found your video. I am looking to upgrade my camera to rp pretty soon the only thing thats bugging me is the image stabilization, considering that i already own a sigma 35mm f1.4 which not IS. How well it perform for stills when its paired with RP as whole setup will be not IS. Thank you. Hope you can answer my question.
Hey! I shot wedding for years without any IS. You really only notice a difference in low light for stills. Just keep your shutter over 200 and you’ll be fine. If need be, you just have to crank the iso and deal with grain, but def not a deal breaker for me.
I think in some cases you will notice. It's huge issue when trying to take something while on the move. I noticed edge all are pretty bad. I have a different lens thought so you might want to test out yours and see what works. I honestly think extra money for R6 and you get 8 point IS
@@MartinA-vw5tx faster shutter speeds help with this, but you're absolutely right... if you're moving a lot while shooting or your subject is fast action, having IS is a game changer. Paired with an IS lens and you'll really see a difference!
@@DominicPhillip 100% agreed, I take a lot of photos of dogs, and unfortunately, I need better lenses cuz a faster shutter is not an option in low-light situations. I really hate that canon RF lenses are so expensive now and there is also a limited choice. I have a lot of legacy lenses but they don't have built-in IS so I think my only option really is to upgrade now.
@@MartinA-vw5tx yea that’s really the bottle neck here… if you need fast stabilized lenses canon is going to cost you an arm and a leg. Although Sony is too, but their lineup is a little more vast and 3rd party supported for mirrorless at this point

This allows you to configure some or all of the LCD as a touchpad so that when you are looking through the EVF, you can move the focus clean around with your thumb as if you were using a trackpad instead of a joystick. And you can also use the front wheel and the back wheel to dial the focus point up, down, left, and right. Plus, you can also use the D pad, but the first method is the easiest. Currently thinking about upgrading my 6d mark II and I'm torn on deciding whether I should buy RP or not. I mainly do car photography and videography on daily basis. As far as I can tell, it's capable of capturing good quality photos, but I'm not sure if the video capability of it would be enough for my needs. I don't care about 4k, so 1080p would fully suffice, because 1080p on the 6d mark II is complete ass.
Don't have the camera in front of me, but I think if you switch the camera to video mode and go into some place in the settings, there is an option for "clean HDMI" which ensures that just the sensor image is in the HDMI output.
BTW you can use the screen to move focus points with your thumb when viewing through the viewfinder...not quite a joy stick but doable. Problem I have with joysticks is they usually remove the 4 way controller, which I prefer...I personally think DR is overrated by reviewers. It's moot if you expose properly...great review though! @@DominicPhillip Hm. It seems it’s more of a choice by Canon to distinguish „entry level“ full-frame cameras from their professional equipment. The much older Nikon d750 or the original Sony a7 Mark I for example have much higher dynamic range compared to the RP as well.

well its 2022 and canon RF lens prices are still extortionate and they've blocked 3rd party lenses for RF mount, so we should sll switch to sony.
What lens would you recommend for portraits ?
Thank you!
So glad I could help. I hope you love the camera!
I have the RP a year now. Upgraded from a crop sensor and I love everything about it. I love your review and you're right about everything. It's a great camera at a great price!
Hi Belinda
I had a Nikon d7200, now I'm looking for a camera that will be smaller but better. everyone praises the Sony A6400 but I'm not sure if it's a good choice. I like the Canon RP very much because the price with 24-105 4-7.1 great is. is Dynamic Range as bad as people say? Will it be better than Nikon d7200?
Greetings from Germany
Tom
@@Passion_biker Tom, did you buy RP? I am on the same way as you right now. 😮
@@kubacernycz hi
I bought a Sony a6400 and a Trio Sigma. I am especially delighted with the 16 and 56 mm f1.4 lenses
Same here
While the RP may not have a joy stick you can use touch and drag while looking through view finder. You can set it up to use only right or left side, this way your nose won’t interfere or move focus point. This is a very easy and quick way to move focus point.
Great point
I bought RP to film my piano videos. So idea was to use flip screen and connect piano directly using microphone port. But flip screen covered by mic jack. So I found better way then using flip screen for vlog purpose. Mobile app. It allows to frame, start/stop video select focus points. Basically you have almost full control over the camera using smart phone.
The info in the EVF turns in portrait mode on a lot of Fuji cameras as well. Nice feature
Completely worth the upgrade. I promise you’ll love it. Cheers and share your work!
@@DominicPhillip thanks my man!
Thank you for a good video!
oooo that's a great tip! Program the d-pad for EVF focus point movement. Smart, thanks for the information! Cheers
Dear Robert, I'd like to appreciate and thankful to you if you could say something about choosing Canon Rp or Lumix GH5M2 or Fujifilm X-T4 for both amateur photo and video works. May be photography is at the centre of my enjoyment. Thank you!
Check out the active touch area. Better than Joystick.
@@johnlin3145 I can't use the active touch area while shooting through the view finder. I'm left eye dominant so my nose touching the screen keeps moving the focus point to the right side of the screen. But, that's a good thought. Thanks!
@@RC-74 I'm the exact same!
Still such a great camera
One thing I recently discovered with the RP if you shot one shoot instead of servo in autofocus mode if you half press the shooter you can easily change your subject of focus without touching the screen using the viewfinder. Hope this helps great video.
yeah.. ok ive fiiiinally made my decision lol, thank you. good video 👍🏻
Coming from an r5 shooter, the rp is a good camera and I use it for hiking because of the weight and street photography
Nice! I agree as well. I feel like the RP is perfect for that beach/hiking type camera that you can shove in a bag and take off.
Can you share your 4k 24fps settings? If love to hear your setup! Thx for watching 🙏🏽✌🏽
Great video, just a note man, when you want to rotate your screen, instead of unplugging stuff just pull the screen back a bit and rotate to whichever direction you need, it will save you a ton of time.
Thanks for the tip bro! I figured that out about 39 seconds after filming this video 😂😂✌🏽
Just scored an RP at $599 refurbished. Can't wait to try it out. I am venturing into video and this will serve for that as well as a backup camera for my 5DSr.
That's a hell of a deal!!! nice work
Great and honest reviews, thanks! I've finally ordered a used RP with 35mm 1.8 RF, as a light and small go-to-camera for family pictures, traveling, fishing and so on. Perfect addition for my two R5 (that are way too overpowered, big, heavy and expensive for those purposes).
That's such a great setup. I'm so glad it was helpful and I hope you shoot the hell out of that camera and love it.
@@DominicPhillip Thanks Dominic! Can‘t wait to get the order delivered :-)
You can flip the screen without turning it all the way to the side so you dont have to unplug the headphones or mic, I do it with my EOS M50 all the time for youtube vids 🤘🏽
That may include actually thinking and using my brain though. Difficult for me to do regularly.
@@DominicPhillip I got the body and lens off BH for $1100
After watching your video on this full frame, you cleared up a lot of confusion for me.
The make-up for there being no joystick is the touch and drag focus on the monitor while using the EVF, you can set it to be used on half the screen so you can drag easier (I might be way late to the party)
you actually not need to touch the backscreen to change focus point theyre is a button for that that let you use the dial to move it
there is a setting the camera that when you look though the viewfinder you can use your thumb on the edge of the touch screen like a joy stick. works better than a joystick I think.
Yea I used it and it was finicky for me. I didn’t really like it tbh, but maybe it’s because my overly large nose kept hitting it too. Lol
It’s also just a great B cam you know? It’s hard to beat for the price, especially if you are looking full frame exclusively
Excellent talking points, this is definitely an overlooked camera. I just sold my 5D2 that I had for the past 10 years and replacing with a refurb RP for $500 and a refurb 50/1.8 for $79.
You mean $599

Called Canon today, just ordered the same RP body and a used separate 50mm lens over the phone with the same thought process as you, thanks Dominic!
Had a low budget and needed a full Frame sensor, 24+mp, with a flip out screen all under $2g.
Have specific needs as an artist to photograph my paintings for enlargement prints, as well as shoot art process video for social media. You confirmed my thoughts. Will see how it goes!
I think for under $2000 it's a really hard setup to beat. Especially now with the newer Canons dropping, I'm really starting to see these come down in price.
Awesome and probably the best, most practical review of the RP! You got me sold. Thank you for this. Liked and subbed!
Appreciate you ray 🙏🏽✌🏽
Great video mate. Thanks for that. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting the RP as I’m a canon user and then I almost got the A7iii but after hearing about the shutter issues I’ve decided to stick with Canon. I’m now convinced this is the camera upgrade for me. Cheers

@DominicPhillip is this the right option for jewellery product photography with 24-105mm kit camera?
@@DominicPhillip thank you so much!!
Can you explain the reserves thing to me? Never heard that term before?
All cameras in the r line (well, not the r3) have touch and drag. This is where you're looking through the evf and you're dragging your finger across the touchscreen to move the focus point. Try this out. It is one of the defining features of Canon cameras and you won't go back to a joystick. This is different than live view photography. In live view where you tap is where it focuses but it's not dragging a cursor around.
I tried it and do like it, but my face kept moving the point around. Maybe I need to give it more time, or maybe slim my face down a bit lol
Very helpful video thanks man!!!
I’ve been planning to buy Canon RP vs Sony A6400, really a great video mate. Cleared up a lot of doubts I had.
I appreciate that! Gluck with the purchase
Bought the rp?
Great video with valid information! Very true, it has some downsides but put in the hands of a professional or a good photographer, with not much budget, they can do magic with it. Thanks for this video. Cheers! 😉
Thanks for watching!
@05:52 Umm, my ‘ancient’ Fuji XT-1 switches the info when you hold it in portrait orientation.
Just sayin. Yeah, this should have had a joystick, again, Canon Cripple hammer! 😳🙄😂
But, I think one can move the focus points with their thumb, with eye to the viewfinder? I’m not sure?
Peace
The cannon cripple hammer killed me 😂😂🙏🏽✌🏽
Hi
I’m just starting out, coming from an iPhone 8 (lol I know) where I’ve been doing street photography around london. Ready to upgrade, would love full frame if poss. My budget is limited and at around the price point of the RP. Do you think it’s a good option for the task at hand… street photography night and daytime, architecture, landscape? I’m primarily focused on city photography at the moment, capturing city life.
Thank so much
Dave
It can be great, but if you're strictly shooting street there are some other fantastic options out there. I like the Ricoh GRiii, the Fuji X100 line, and I like the Sony A72. All great cameras in that same price point.
I too noticed the slow burst rate with eye tracking on fast moving subjects. i’m wondering if a faster card would help or is the processor the problem? I plan to test but maybe someone already has.
Great video! Got one on the way and excited to try it out!
Hope you enjoy it!
I’m looking to get this camera for little wedding work and Family portrait work. You think it would be good? Eventually down the line i will upgrade but i think this is a good start
Definitely. It’s perfect for that. Just get extra batteries and good memory cards.
Can you please suggest which qre good batteries for canon eos rp
Do you think this is still worth it now? I have the canon eos 200d. with an ef 18-55mm f2.8 lens. Been thinking of upgrading my camera. Have had it fo 9 years now.
best review so far on the rp
Thank you! That means a lot.
Excellent video with LOTS of good information!
Thank you! I appreciate that
Really good video, honest and down to earth advice 👍
What about the Nikon Z5?
Cheers
Nice video. Make sure you have the latest firmware update & use SanDisc Extreme Pro card with a small U3 symbol, the 3 is in the U, & you’ll have no issues shooting in 4K.
have you use the drag and AF in canon? that use the touch screen like a mouse to control the focus point. That is so much better than a joystick.
it is on M50, it is on my M6MKII , it is also on EOS R. it must be on the RP. This make it more usable then my A7RIV
it meant to work when you use the EVF of coz.
I’ve used it and like it a lot. I just don’t like using it when I’m using the EVF. When I’m in the EVF I prefer having a joystick.
Really Nice Video Bro! Thanks!
Thanks so much, appreciate you watching.

agree. the eye AF is better than R. i have both. I prefer the RP but the downside is the battery. Drain fast
That's very true. The battery life is abysmal! Luckily wasabi batteries are cheap
I’m a barber and do mostly still head shots . I also want to record Tutorials. Looking at this camera vs Sony 7iii ??
Thanks for watching and the comment! Do you find the adapter slowing down your AF at all?
Great Review.
Thank you sir!
Great review!
Thanks!
well i see the EOS RP and its capability of using EF mounts as a huge upgrade, sadly the EF/RF Filter Adapter cost too much still.
Thanks for the info. You’re right, that adapter is way too expensive for what it is.
@@DominicPhillip btw i absolutely love the Eos RP - ofc, despite a lot better high iso performance than my 550D - i somehow think i still want a stabilized sensor - would only be the R6 as „cheap“ as the RP but „only“ 18MP and even better iso performance
But in overall… im impressed, only the autofocus, made some „bad“ lenses usable again which were a desaster on my 550Ds 9 AF points, finally a nice and usable live view with awesome features like focus and shoot with tapping the area you want to focus and many other neat features.
I mean with MagicLantern i had most stuff also on the 550D, but after getting used to the UI of the RP and optimizing it for my needs as good as possible, WOW!
Biggest downsides in a nutshell:
- battery life, got already 2 batteries, thinking about a 3rd (astrophotography beginner)
- no electronic shutter except for full auto/scene mode. In some home/indoor usages where i shoot a ton of photos but probably 1-2% usable, i would love to reduce shutter wear (or how is this with mirrorless nowadays?!)
- no in body stabilizer, not even 3 axis only
- price… well, lets be honest, its still expensive as fk! But considering its still one of the cheapest ways to get into full frame… well, its just ok (not so canons filter and RF lens prices)
And somehow, as i got a RF 50mm 1.8… i never believed i would want that, but i sent back the RF EF adapter within the last days possible because the multifunction ring on the RF lenses.
Could never need another camera honestly.
it's pretty much perfect for you. There's no reason to spend more, instead get some good glass!
I really really liked ur video
Thanks for watching!
Very informative thx
Glad it was helpful!
Ended up buying a Q haha. I want the Q-P tho!
@@saintpreferred9223 Pancacke lens with an adapter twice as fat? No thanks.
Great video.
What camera would you recommend for beginners, if not the RP?
Canon M50 or Fuji XS10. Both fantastic options. Maybe the zve10 by Sony as well
@@DominicPhillip Thanks for responding. I want a camera with a filp out screen as well as a view finder
@@RichieColemanSr I think an Canon M50 would be perfect for what you’re looking for. You can pick them up used for under $500. You just can’t do 4k video on it because it sucks. 1080p video is great though!
@@DominicPhillip I have big hands and it seems small. Maybe I can get a battery pack
Great video!! It's still a great camera today and even in 2022
Agreed and thank you for the words.
Great review...I agree the RP is a great camera...Its my first choice in a working FF body...I use it with both EF and some RF glass...Note: two cards slots is a non issue for me...I would rather just have two or more bodies and change out the cards often...( I don't do video)...Cheers
how different will this feel compared to my rebel t5?
a lot different.
I love the RP cuz the small footprint it has but honestly for amateurs like me spending more money on lenses is not an option.
I realize the video has been out for a while. I hope that the OP is still enjoying the RP! But there are several ways to move the focus point around. But the easiest way is to configure touch and drag in the menu. I’ve been using my LCD as a trackpad for a while now and it’s a game changer way better than a joystick.
Which all lenses we will be needing for rp beginner photography like portrait ,street .Could you suggest
No doubt start with a 50mm f1.8, then move up to a Tamron or Sigma 28-75 or 24-70 f2.8. Great all around lenses and you will use them forever!
Oh and BUY USED!
@@DominicPhillip how good is the 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM which is available with body in amazon site.
@@fredtester6315 @Dominic would love to know your thoughts on this! currently looking at the same lens
@@milesprower3957 well i was thinking if its a good lens for a day to day use then only few more lens need to be bought
What are some good lenses to get for the RP
50 1.8, 35 1.4, 24-70 sigma 2.8, all the L glass… I could go on and on. There’s a ton used for that camera now.
@@DominicPhillip Thank you so much!
@@DominicPhillip What would you recommend for street photography?
The Viltrox 85mm 1.8 is supposed to be a nice portrait lens for the money
Its a very clear explanation!
Glad you think so!
But when I used it, the buffer time between preview n return to real time is slow. So for fast moving n event, it's a no
Touch to drag focus on the screen while you have your eye on the evf. The m50 has that setting and I believe it should be on the rp.
Yea, I know it’s there and tested it, I just didn’t care for it tbh.
@@DominicPhillip oh well 🤷♂️
@@DominicPhillip But youre missing out on a really great feature. It is one of the features a friend with a Nikon would love to have. I also was kinda used to a joystick coming from a 5d MKIII, but this is really really great and now I prefer it over the joystick.
@@pays3n for some reason my nose keeps hitting the screen and moving the point around. 🤷🏽♂️
@@DominicPhillip I guess you are looking through the EVF with your left eye? Or did you change the settings accidentally? Because you can change the active part of the display for touch to drag to left, right, upper left, lower left, upper right, lower right etc. It should be on the right side when it comes from the factory - you can give it a try :-)
I got this camera used for 770 USD with the 24-105 lens, was it a good deal? I am waiting for it to arrive in the mail.
Yes that’s a good deal. As long as its working perfectly you’ll get your money out of it
In terms of street Photography, ease of carrying, which one do u prefer? Fuji X100V or Canon RP??
Also can I use Canon E-FS 24mm F2.8 STM lense with this??
For street specifically I LOVE the x100V. I'd take that or the Ricoh GRIII. Both of those are king of street photography!
@@DominicPhillip thanks for letting me know. I was lately watching many reviews on youtube for camera. My main desire to get a good camera with a wide angle lense for street Photography & occasional videography as well. I realised, Fuji X-E4 has the same processor & fast auto focus as X-100V, plus it's better for videography & can be used with other lenses. Do u hv any thought on Fuji X-E4 with 18mm F2, 27mm F2.8 seems not so wide that's why preferring 18mm F2. Pls comment on Fuji X-E4 with 18mm F2. Pls
Hello dude! I have a question... my eos rp is on the latest firmware and I don't have 29p or 24 etc. can u pls explain to me why? Thanks in advance!
You’ve officially stumped me. Does it have 30p?
@@DominicPhillip I found it bro, I was shooting PAL that’s why it didn’t show up… Now I switched it to NTSC..
@@ΔημήτρηςΑνδρεούδης Awesome, thanks for sharing! Enjoy the camera, even if the video kinda sucks haha
@@DominicPhillip yeah it’s ok for me though XD
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to turn off the auto-focus rectangle when livestreaming from the EOS RP do you have any advice?
I'm not sure as I've never live-streamed with the RP. Let me set it up though and see if I can figure it out for you.
Video looked better with the RP!!
appreciate it and you're right about the 4 way controller. ✌🏽
Thanks for the great video! One comment, though. According to DxO, the a6400 has a much better dynamic range compared to the RP (13.6 vs 11.9)
Interesting. I wonder how thats possible. Newer tech and processors probably.
@@DominicPhillip Hm. It seems it’s more of a choice by Canon to distinguish „entry level“ full-frame cameras from their professional equipment. The much older Nikon d750 or the original Sony a7 Mark I for example have much higher dynamic range compared to the RP as well.
