This video resonates with me quite a bit. I’ve felt like an insane person for loving the RP and seeing so much hate for it on RUclips. I bought one immediately after it was released just to taste the RF system then I sold it when I had the opportunity to buy an R for a great price- then I missed the sort of “fun” feeling of the RP, so I bought another one. Then I got an R6 when it was new and sold my R and second RP to fund the purchase, and again I missed the RP. These days I leave the R6 at home for casual outings and shoot with my phone because I don’t want to break or lose my R6, and I find myself doing exactly what you mentioned here, worrying about the shutter count and resale value. I shoot haircuts for Instagram, and I think the RP is just freaking SPOT ON dollar for dollar the greatest value to do that.
Thanks Andrew, yes this is the thing, its about what you will actually use. The specs and what the camera can do are all well and good but what are you picking up to use and is it doing the job. Thats what matters in the end and leaving and expensive camera at home is logical and all the more reason not to have one. Unless of course it is your job and benefits you but then it wouldnt be left at home. Glad you found a camera that you are happy with and actually use!
You take the words right out of my mouth. I just got one, coming from a 5d mk3. The user experience, price, Ef adapter and just effortlessly beautiful results has made this my favorite I’ve owned to date.
I am coming from a 5D mark II and I do not have an R5 or R6 budget will this do well for my portrait business ? will I be happy coming from a 5D mark II ?
@@deewillis2736 100% I originally owned the Canon 6D and now own the Canon RP. Fits in the palm of your hand, auto focus is next level and high ISO useable up to 12800 comfortably I have found. Can also USB charge it with a power delivery power bank which is useful for road trips. Many complain about the battery life but for studio work and travel it's perfect I turn the camera off when not in use versus walking around with the screen on or in standby. 4K auto focus not good for moving subjects but 1080p is fantastic and usually upscale to 4K bitrate anyway for RUclips for higher quality. I'll just use my GoPro 7 for 4k UHD if I need high fps video.
Great perspective. I have an RP, EOS R and a R6. I weddings and portraits occasionally some creative content for local client. I get totally pissed off that my RP shots are equal and sometimes better than my more expensive R6. I also have a 90D it holds its own with the mirrorless R’s and it’s crop sensor 🤯l have three pieces of L glass but my RP with a non L 85mm is showing my best work. I shot an event with the RP and some of the other photographers thumb their noses at me for using an Amateur camera. It was a non profit event still only. Quite frankly I got incredible results. The RP handle awesome in a crowded venue!
Can you share more on the settings you used for event coverage and the details of the event? I just purchased an RP and I do event coverage for work so I’m trying to see what works best for the majority of situations. (I cover a lot of inside events such as gyms, schools, auditoriums btw)
I bought one the other day with a nifty fifty. Instantly fell in love with the thing once out and about doing some low light portraits at the local pub. Amazing. Certainly not disappointed.
Thank you (THANK YOU!) for nailing what I have found from being a Canon user for more than 20 years. Their usability is underrated and I have NO idea why, when the best specced camera in the world is useless if you can't get it to do what you need in the "decisive moment."
Yes! That is exactly why I am leaving the Fuji system. Wonderful files that look "fake" to my eye, and totally unusable cameras with tons of sub-sub-menus. The user interface of my XT-4 is a nightmare and makes me feel like I don't want to pick up my camera and shoot. With Canon is another story, with the RP even more, It makes everything fun and easy.
@@davidevalentiofficial Interesting you mention Fuji. I have tried to shoot with several of their cameras and yes, every time, I end up sending them back because they are so frustrating to use. I think the files are okay if shooting outside in good light, but their high ISO performance is not great and their menus ARE frustrating. I never knew what haptics mean until I tried shooting with Sony and Fuji; Canon (and maybe Nikon) are the only ones who get it right.
Bloody hell, I just stumbled on this video, and thought I recognized your name. I remember ready your blogs on your webpage years ago when the Nikon D700 was your main photographic tool for weddings, then later on when you purchased the FujiFilm XE-1 and posted some cracking results with that too, which inspired me to be where I am today, so thanks for that. Excellent content here too and instantly subscribed. I myself purchased the RP, (Mainly for video, due to the cracking autofocus) and also enjoying the quality for photography too. Mind you the 24-105mm f/4-7.1 kit lens bothered me a little, with trying to ascertain focus lock at 105mm in very low interior light, but other than that, I'm using it more than my Nikons at the moment, and I'm really relishing the quality over the cost of this camera, oh, and the size, truly a carry everywhere tool. I to am now not worrying too much about just using the gear, even though the marketing is getting more and more enticing and sophisticated with trying to tempt me to purchase the next greatest tech. Its amazing weve taken again a similar camera journey, the rp is doing really well for me i must say, its impressing me more and more all the time. i need to figure out my lenses still i think though. You made some excellent points. I've been a photographer for a lot of years, specializing in people photography. I've shot quite a few different brands of cameras and settled on Canon as my main and ultimately only brand that I use. My primary reason is the color rendition that Canon produces. No other brand that I've shot can match it, particularly with people. Their menu system is simple and easy to use and the ergonomics, at least for me, is great. I have the R and R6 and about a half a year ago purchased the RP, primarily to shoot street photography, which I'm doing in my spare time when I have spare time. It's a perfect camera for that and I've made some excellent images using the RP. I like it for its size and I'm not able to put a battery pack on it, so it keeps the size small. I'm a battery pack fanatic, every camera I own has a battery pack because about 90 percent of my shots are verticals and I like having the controls where they're easy to reach without contorting my arm over my head--and I like having the extra battery, which gives me longer shooting times. Another reason, an important reason, is Canon's customer service, I belong to Canon Professional Services and I recommend them to any pro photographer, they do good and fast work on cameras and lenses. I could most likely use the RP for pretty much all of my shooting, including my studio shoots, if I wanted to. It's a great camera, and you did an extremely good job of explaining why it's such a good camera. Keep up the good work.
Hi Guy, thanks for that its interesting you have a similar conclusion I think the RP has been largely overlooked, ill probably get an r5 or r6 later not sure yet though. probably the r5 but only once the price has dropped a lot more, in the meantime ill be very happy with the rp, maybe even enough to wait for whatever comes out next. Had to watch this video again because I appreciate a honest review. No camera is perfect and so many people are delusional thinking a camera will please everyone .
Almost five months later..., a little update. Started using it for paid jobs. For using it in the studio I bought some high wattage LED lights which I prefer over my flashlights. It is like starting my professional career all over again. Back then in the Derbyshire hills in a small village called Hadfield. My first paid job was a photo of a musician called Victor Hickling also known as Victor Brox. The print was used as an autograph thingy for a tour in Germany. 1978 it was. The RP gives me this feeling of creative freedom while being light-weight and just basic for modern standards. Top.
I just got an RP and I'm really excited to get into using it. I had an old Nikon film SLR back like 20 years ago but sold it to go all digital, but I couldn't afford a DSLR, so I've been using a Canon G15 for years (point and shoot with manual controls and RAW). I finally had enough money for a $1,000 camera (expensive to me) and decided that the RP would be the best place to start. A full frame mirrorless with a flip-around screen and decent video. I'm completely satisfied with it so far, other than the battery not lasting long, but I do have 5 batteries. Got it like-new used with a 24-105mm RF lens for $950.
I bought the RP for vintage manual lenses to use on a full frame sensor, there is so much great vintage glass to take advantage of without breaking the bank. Also being a mirrorless you can adapt most anything to it.
I like your attitude bro. I work 5 years behind the the curve to let everyone thrash it out. I just got a 2nd hand RP with a new battery grip and it's brill. Have an M6 Mk2 and a 5D mk2 and it'a all brill for my non pro corner x
Great advise, Martin. I collect cameras, and use them every day for landscape, still life, and street. I have a little Canon M2 18mp with only 1 dial and maybe 2 buttons, and I love it the same way I love an old VW bug. I live in an area where I have every reason to expect my camera to be ripped off my body or out of my car at any moment. Also, I can't resell from here. So I buy cameras I'm not afraid to use and loose. (Hint: a scenic town in Mexico that looks and feels a lot like Disneyland.) The Canon RP is my next purchase. Thanks!
Love your video, I have spent a significant amount of money chasing specs and new cameras and am now just starting to understand that I have yet to use any camera to it’s full potential. I’ve just been excited to get my hands on new equipment but it’s been an expensive mistake. Plan on getting one of these as I decided to go back to Canon and hopefully this time I will keep it until it no longer works and instead invest my money in the rf glass. Thanks for your review.
Great video mang. I own a RP with the native 70-200/2.8 and the 50/1.8 and it totally nails skin tones, I’m not a professional but gets constant compliments on my work with the RP, for the money it can’t be beat.
I did when I first got it but I rarely use it now. I bought the 70-200 f2.8 and the 50 f1.8 that I use primarily now. I want a wider angle premium lens but $$$
Two years ago, I bought the RP + RF24-240. Replaced my 600D (18MP APS-C) + Tamron 18-270. Loved the old gear for 10 years. Could not be happier. Until I did a test out between the two. A crop from the RP @270 was better than a full image from my 600D@270 (=400+). Bought the RP and loving it. I don't do video so its shortcomings there do not worry me. Since added R50 + RF100-400. Both FF lenses can be used on either. Same battery. In camera lens correction for jpegs is great. The R50 has some later / better specs than the RP and with that 100-400 I've got the occasional very long reach covered.
I had gotten the RP myself and wanted to see someone else's opinion. I shoot with a pureset perspective, so the RP is really good for me. The things that I may not like is the lack of IBIS and Weather Sealing. Obviously, those things weren't a deal-breaker for me. Like you said, the foundational features of the RP are solid. It's a basic competent tool that will get the job nicely done.
For me I think I’d like to be able to turn off the ibis on the r5,6 independently for filming myself. The ibis looks awful and would be a bit of a deal breaker for me. I think canon in general needs to give photographers more control of their cameras and as such the rp does about everything I can expect from a canon
I live in sweden I shot with canon rp and rf 24-105 f4 in very difficult weather conditions, rain ,snow, wind from minus 15 to plus 35 celsius etc, no problem with weather sealing, rp work very good, I shot long exposure 30 sec in the rain camera work
Hankering after another RP. Like others on here i had an RP and loved it. Got caught up in the upgrade race and moved to an R8. Yes, it’s a better camera but i just don’t use half of the things that are on there. I never use video and the amazing AF tracking etc. It is really good but i went on safari and the RP coped very well. I shot Cheetahs running at 70mph or whatever and had no problems getting sharp, in focus shots. I just need to dial out of this marketing race and buy the camera that has features i need and use, and no more, i suppose. Great video, Martin. I guess if you understand how things work, getting decent shots with any relatively modern camera is possible.
What's your opinion on the eye-detect focus? Let's say a head & shoulders portrait, 85mm f1.4 wide-open. Does it nail the focus on the actual eye/pupil, or is it generally around the eye socket/forehead? It's literally the only reason I'm thinking of a Canon mirrorless because I could concentrate on composition (focus-recompose on my 6D works, and I love the camera, but having the ability to put the camera on a tripod, and chat to the subject, whilst the camera takes care of critical focus is very appealing.
Oh it works really well, i think the focus is probably even better on the r6 r5 etc. but yeah its pretty reliable and goes for the iris itself, thats what ive found so far, hit rate is good with it. If you want to shoot at 1.4/1.2 then mirrorless is a bit of a game-changer really.
I had an EOS RP in 2019 I think, but that camera failed both as replacing my old Foveon SD15 on landscape still, and also failed as 4k camera because Canon decided to delete the autofocus on 4k: literally baited by iPhone X on handeld videos. It's a clean example of Canon cripple hammer
The RP was my first mirrorless. I loved it, especially for stills. It was a little lacking in what I needed for video, which is why I ultimately upgraded, but it's an excellent camera.
The RP looks like a real bargain. I have more cameras than I have time to shoot but that doesn’t stop the appreciation. For a grand one could accomplish a lot.
It is as long you only want photo, only 1080p video, no slowmo and just basic autofocus/tracking, nothing "fancy" like animal eye AF, focus stacking, or so... I had the RP and enjoyed it for about 2 years, but i sold it with rest warranty before any "RP Mk2" is released. Good decision it turned out now with the R8. Im now at a R7 since about a year (with RP+R7 for a while) and after a bit regretting the R7 purchase in the beginning (shutter shock, software issues), after firmware/UI problems are fixed, shutter shock issues are very lens depending (RF 800 F11 mainly/only) i dont regret it anymore, R7 is beside the crop sensor better in anything else especially a charme with many unstabilized lenses with IBIS.

I do like the RP a lot. Tethered support in capture one is nice. The profiles in LR look good. Only thing than can suffer for me is shadow recovery. A7III for low light is fine with a 50mm f1.8, RP for low light you would need a 50mm F1.4 and be more careful with it; other than that I really like it. 👍

One question - in case you are still looking into comments from older video: which color profile do you recommend? Seems like „Auto“ has its own set of values. Hey there! I'm now considering buying this camera over the Canon 5D mark IV thanks to your video. The 5D seems like a great camera, but people keep complaining about the technology of it being outdated. It seems to me as though the image quality is probably similar between both systems, and that Canon just wants to sell more things to people by changing their mounts. What do you think about this? I've been thinking about the RP lately. It's tempting to chase specs and jump systems or get a mortgage to buy some R5 you'll never need all the features of. But reality is that I took great pictures on the 5D, 6D, 5D2, and I would like to get into mirrorless for the full aperture composing and accurate focus for fast lenses, and being compatible with my good lenses. The RP has a 6D2 sensor in it, which isn't anything to scoff at. I could justify going up to an R for the build and battery compatibility, the 5D 4 sensor is a bonus.. but it's probably better to get the RP and just wait until the R6's trickle down to the depreciation value sweet spot where the RP sits at now. I can pick up an RP locally for all of 600 bucks, and an adapter ring for like 60, that's amazing for what you're getting really. That's like ONE really good lens that might actually resolve the 26Mp sensor in this thing
The RP is my first full frame and I upgraded from a Sony A6000 that I got in 2015! To be honest, buying this camera refurbished was what I could reasonably afford. I'm super happy with it and hopefully I can purchase a great lens for it down the road. Thanks for your insight Martin
I'm thinking of upgrading from my old rebel to this camera. All the reviews I've seen are from photography snobs with their heads up their arses complaining about how this camera doesn't match their elite picture taking skills of random flowers, buildings, and hands. This is clearly an full-frame, entry level, affordable camera aimed at beginners, hobbyists, or people that want a beater camera to carry around.
Kind of wishing I had bought an Roma’s my first camera instead of an Sony a6400. Just prior to focus there was a ridiculous cheap deal for the rp and a 24-105 rf f4
For me, the only thing the RP lacks is a joystick but that didn't stop me from buying one. As a simple, lightweight kit for hiking and travel (especially if you're going places like cities where it might get nicked), it's great. However, I don't think it's fair to say the RP is all you need as a hobbyist. If your genre happens to be wildlife/birds/action or anything needing heavy cropping, the RP is really not up to that.
I have a very old 7D and its starting to fail me. I have a very low budget but need to upgrade for my photography hobby which is essentially wildlife, landscape and the beginning of astrophotography. The one thing that stops me from buying this camera is that its only got a mere 4 FPS. But does that really matter as much as I think it does? Is that really all im paying for if I go for a camera with 30 FPS? I dont make money out of my photography but I do have friends and family who like to frame my photographs, so they still need to be of quality.....
I’m thinking to buy either RP or R10 planning as a hobby for pet photography (mostly cats) indoor and outdoor and I don’t know which one to choose, I don’t have a big budget so my options are limited but I still want yo have a decent camera

This video make me think the of reason why I gave up with Fujifilm after a while using my XT-4 and coming back to the Eos system with the RP. I guess we all agree the RP is not the best high end specs on paper camera on the market, not at all for sure. But that ease of use, that feeling you get from the camera while using it, is something no top specs can give. I literally hated my Fuji XT-4 for it's freaky menu system I couldn't get used to even after a while. Yes, the XT-4 raw files are absolutely amazing with their fantastic dynamic range, sharpness and bla, bla, bla. But, at the end of the day, the pictures looked too "artificial" to me, if you know what I mean. So I totally agree with you and that is why I came back to the RP. Cheers!
Just got RP from Nikon D7200 Before the trade I didn’t think it would be much of an upgrade but I was so wrong. It has everything I need, I love the camera
Good points. If you're a pro, it's more important to get the tool that does the job you want and one enjoy using every day. Money shouldn't come into it. I'd personally get the R for the bigger grip, battery and bigger view finder.
Thanks Martin. That was a very helpful video and a good reality check for me. I am doing photography as a retirement hobby with a Canon 60D and a Lumix GX80. (I bought the Lumix for a holiday that never happened because of Covid but I like the focus peaking for macro.) I am not sure if I should upgrade the Canon 60D, as it is OK most of the time but sometimes the 9 focus points are limiting. Canon seem to have given up on DSLRs and the APS-C format and are pushing us to the R series cameras. I can't decide whether I should go full frame or if the lenses would be too heavy. I liked the look of the Canon R6 but not the price and, as you say, the RP makes more sense for someone like me, even without IBIS. Now I have to decide whether to go for the Canon RP, a used Canon 80D, a Fujifilm XT-4 or (for nostalgic reasons) perhaps an Olympus E-M5 or E-M1.
I would go for mirrorless if you can as the advantages for autofocus alone are well worth it. All of this systems are good. Depends what you shoot and what you want, for me I’d look seriously at the Fuji and canon. Go with what you are more drawn to and you’ll probably be happy with either.
Using 80D, obtained new 2019; also 1000D from way back. 80D does reasonable job for my average capacity but now looking to RP with EF adaptor to realise better results from EF glass. Must say can achieve acceptable street results from 80D paired with Canon 50mm 1.4.
For professional work I still use my old Nikon D700 and D800. I've never thought about other cameras. Just got the RP to try mirrorless and to start doing some content creation. The RP is honestly a content creation machine. It's cheap, easy to use, effective at what it does well and just a capable camera. It's far better than most cameras in its price range, it's better than older DSLRs It's just a great camera that gets hate because it doesn't have 20fps and it doesn't shoot 4k full frame. It's just a great camera.
@Y Bell it's great. I love it, but if you're a nikon shooter go with the Z5. Get the adapter to use your old lenses. Might be worth it for you unless you need the flip out screen
@@blakegirouxphotography My main reason for wanting to buy a mirrorless is to lighten the weight when hiking to shoot landscapes. I'll never get rid of my trusty Nikon D700, lol. I'll research the Z5 and compare it to the RP. Thanks!
@Y Bell they are almost the same. The flip out screen is the biggest difference and the Z5 has two memory card slots where the RP has one. If that doesn't matter, and you don't mind buying other lenses from Canon then the RP is cheaper and probably is all you will need.

Well said, thanks man! I am really close on selling my A7s and getting the RP. I can stand the horrible auto WB and the skin tones any more...... But there is one thing that I really need in my camera lately, and that is silent shutter. I am so said that it is somewhat crippled in the RP. As far as I know it can be used in scene mode as well as in any mode when focus bracketing is enabled. My problme with that is that at this point I mainly use adapted manual glass, and I am still planning to use them with the RP. Do you know if the camera still uses silent shutter when used with adapted lenses? I am speculating maybe with the EF adapter with a dumb adapter put on it ( for example RF-EF + EF-M42), might force the camera to engage the silent shutter the same way it does with the normal shutter. Thanks in advance for the info. ;)
the silent shutter on the RP is hopeless, i dont know the answer to your question but i can tell you it will be miserable for me to even test it out. If silent shutter is a must get the R.

@@alcedo_kf its a scene option like lady with hat, flower icon and mountain icon and has no control its just full auto. If you want silent shutter your cheapest option is the EOS R. hope that helps.
Hi, Nice video thanks. The one thing stopping me buying the RP is the AF; Any thoughts on the RPs 4 FPS in C-AF for caprturing subjects like kids, sports, wildlife, anything fast moving etc... Is it enough in the real world? Is the AF fast & accurate enough? Can the EVF keep up? And is it any good at tracking subjects? Many thanks!
Agreed. It's good enough for anything. I think the money for more expensive models is better spent on better computer specs to make the next part of the process quicker and easier.
Martin, I was wanting to buy the Canon R6 but I’m confused as to why this camera sharpens RAW files when shooting? To me this is completely counter to shooting RAW.
All raw files are edited by cameras. It’s kind of a shame it’s called because that implies it’s straight off the sensor but there is no such thing. Sharpening noise reductions and colour palette are written to the file it’s better to think of it as a very flexible JPEG in some ways

Hey Martin, I just bought the RP a few days ago for travel and possibly some paid stuff down the line. Quick question. As a pro photographer, has not having dual card slots on a camera ever been a hindrance for you to not use it on a small paid gig?
it depends on the shoot, im not keen on single card slot for weddings, most other things are repeatable or you can tether to a computer. It depends on the value of the shoot too. Generally id say dont worry about it. The important thing is you use the best quality card you can.
When you're paid and you cannot re-shoot (eg Wedding, family event) it makes sense to play it safe. I find 2 cameras might be even more safe in that situation. I never had a card fail, but a flash controller when the bridal party went down the aisle. I missed a few shots, but had a second shooter from a different, wider angle, natural light. That saved it, and a second card slot would not have made a difference. As Martin mentioned, and they may also need replacing after some years, depending what you put them through ...😊
I was happy with the images and really liked the compact size and overall ergonomics. Also I was pleasantly surprised by the solid feeling build quality - despite it being polycarbonate. The biggest negative for me was battery life but I would just carry spares
Great to stumble upon your video and insights as I have been procrastinating for ages now on updating my humble 9 year old Canon 700D APS-C and Ive been bouncing back and forth between Canon 90D or gong full frame with Canon RP. What puts me off about RP is the restrictions on video dimension and fps when using ef-adaptor to use ef lenses - The 90D however doesnt appear to offer any improvement in noise or clarity but 4k uncropped video and using my lenses without adaptor and restrictions is making it tough to decide when budget is also restricted! The RP may offer better nicer bokeh full frame for my portrait work but I still cant decide so still carrying on with 700d fr now trying get the max I can out of it
I think that considering you have apsc lenses you could go with the 90d you could just ad a 50mm 1.8 for portraits I think that’s enough for shallow depth of field. 🙂
I think you made a really good point here. I do own the R5 and guess what on my surfing vacation last week to Spain I made all my pictures with my iPhone. I was too afraid that the camera could get stolen or at least damaged in the sand or whatsoever. When I came back I started thinking to address that point and looking for a cheaper body. I thought to get maybe a Sony A7 IIIc But the camera costs still €2000 at the moment. Also during walks and most of the time I don’t bring the R5 anywhere to keep it safe and nice. …a little late, anyway! I had the RP for a while in use, together with the RF50. The camera itself was a joy to use, autofocus works perfectly for me, wonderful viewfinder and rear display, easy carrying, really a fun camera! Unfortunately I was never able to get the gorgeous colours I´ve got from my old Pentax K-5IIs and a DA Prime. Working on the raw files was rather annoying and at the end the results were mostly not to my taste. Maybe my own inability, maybe the RF lens is not my thing. A great pity really.
we all want the amazong r6 and r5 . 10bits video. when in fact. non of us here have a big youtube channel. RP is amazing and when you grow stronger and larger then upgrade the body
I think the major three things that the RP lacks for most people is the lack of weather sealing, no dual card slot, and low FPS shutter. So if you are shooting sports, anything around water, or things that can not be repeated, the RP is not for you. But for everybody else it's a great camera that can get 80% of what most people need done.
Hi Jerrard, thanks for your comment, yes you are right but also think the price point needs to be taken into account. The battery life is an issue too. But it is a good little all round camera, I’ve take it to some remote areas in Scotland and it’s been fine and has ultimately handled most situations including some rain too.
Jerrard.. could you recommend a camera that's $2000 or less. Not looking to spend a ton for a camera but i need something to record my year in Thailand coming up. I'll be there next summer and basically i need a camera that records good 4k footage, especially of the water and nature. And i'll use it to venture out and record nightlife as well. So street videos and ocean/beach videos, vlogging and a RUclips channel to show all the footage. Can you think of something that would work for me? Not that great with cameras. I was looking at some of the sony's, fijifilms's and canon's.
It’s a bit better for colour yes but I think it depends what you photograph, what does the R offer that the RP doesn’t? Battery life is definitely one thing and that might matter a lot.

This is a difficult one, ive had 2 sd cards fail before, one happened the day after a wedding, i can say one card was a lexar card so id almost not include it and the other was a sandisk card an extreme pro. You can have corrupt files with some cameras nowadays if you dont use UHS-ii cards. if you shoot on 2 cameras at the same time which is always a good idea for weddings then youd only lose half of the shots potentially if nothing was recoverable. Only you can ultimately decide that. If it would worry you all the time then id go for dual card slots. I should make a video about this actually.
@@MartinCastein - Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about the two card failures, especially the SanDisk. If I were a professional, especially shooting one-off events like weddings, the single SD card slot on the RP would probably be a deal breaker for me, despite all the other strengths of this camera. But I guess having 2 cameras on hand would offer some peace of mind.
Yes it’s up to you individually, I prefer two card slots as well personally but I have shot many weddings with cameras with one slot, incidentally the card that failed happened the day after a wedding, I had downloaded the photos and backed them up, formatted the card went out to take photos in London and the card failed. I was really glad it didn’t happen the day before.
@@MartinCastein Just noticed Wex are doing a brand new RP for £849 with 0% 12 months intrest free credit, and a brand new Canon D6 Mk 2 for £1069 brand new, is either a stop gap till the price of the R8 comes down, and is available, i am just an enthuiast. its for taking pictures of my grandaughter, and i clean & preserve wedding dress for a living, we have a studio for thet, with a full professional lighting system and pemanent background, i currently have a canon 5D mk 3, many thanks Robert
@@robertturnbull4976 oh for sure, id go with the RP for the better focus system, it has eye tracking and youll appreciate that, just remember its a different lens mount so youll need RF lenses or an adapter for EF lenses and Id get a used but in good condition spare battery from MPB

Martin, I need your advice: RP and A7 Classic seem to be very similar in terms of specs. The A7 has these paper wins like much better DR. I didn’t really have the rp in really cold conditions for long I think if this is what you are after you should look at the eos r or similar with the larger batteries. The a7 focus will make you cry.
You are definitely the voice of reason especially given the current refurbished price @ Canon USA of $599 USD with a one year factory warranty included. It’s truly a no brainer. I was going to purchase the R8 as my first Canon mirrorless but I changed my mind. I could even add the warranty and accidental coverage for four years at only $149 which makes the total $748 a true steal, less than many crop sensor offerings.. Bottom line you made a very good point of not being in the race to purchase the latest greatest super expensive Canon body only to have it depreciate and have to handle It with kid skin gloves.
I need to compare more I’m planning a comparison review but so far I think rp colour is very good and a lot better than the R, I can’t give you a proper answer yet it’s something I want to test properly but I’ll say it felt “at home” in what I’d expect a proper canon to be… so far anyway.

Dont You think 1080p on eos rp looks soft? Maybe its line skipped? Hard to find proper info but on some examples it looks softer than 1080p from Canon m50!
thank you for the sane & down to earth review. since you have and adore the 5D classic (my current gear) and the rp (my desired gear), how would you compare the image of the two? is the rp close in some ways to the render of the 5D? I'm not interested in autofocus, speed, newer features (apart from the zebra highlight option), etc., I care solely for the rendition on the image. I will never ever sell my 5D, it's just that it's so heavy and bulky, a refurbished rp (being small and light) seems like a great option. cheers!
The 5d classic is unique, the rp has very nice canon colour and rendered image and I think most people will be very happy with it. It’s small and light especially paired with the smaller lenses.

A very good point. I totally agree. I own a canon 50D, I bought it new in 2009 and I’m still using it. It is a good camera, still capable of shooting good photos. Especially after installing Magic Lantern… But it is aging and now I started seeing all its flaws. I was able to take it anywhere I want without worrying about anything. it is build like a tank and not too expensive to be worried about thefts. Now I think I need a new, better, preferably full frame camera. And canon RP seems to be the best option for me. And definitely it is the best value for money especially is you buy it used in good condition for around 800£. I own a few EF/EFS lenses, a couple of vintage lenses which I’ll be able to use with the Canon RP. I’m not a professional photographer, I don’t make money making photos… why would I pay more? Perhaps 🤔 I can get a canon R used for 1000£… or better an RP…. 😂😂😂😂
hmmm hard to say whats better, in some ways the battery is the decider between these two, the battery life of the RP is actually fine but the downside that really affects me is they drain really fast when you arent using them. If that doesnt bother you then it doesnt really matter which you go for.
Martin I bought 2 A6600's for just that reason, I also have an A7R4 but I use the 6600's to pack on a motorcycle, drag through the woods, use in the rain and not worry

Really loved this review - based an actual real world use. I have only one question - is the absence of sensor cover an issue for RP? Does it make the sensors prone to dust a lot?
It doesn’t seem to attract dust but you will have to be very careful changing lenses as an exposed sensor is an exposed sensor so act accordingly really 🙂
At the worst, have it cleaned by an expert for some money or do it yourself (there are youtube videos that show hoe). It happened to me after 1.5 years of usage - high values apurtures revealed few random little black spots. They were gone after a careful cleaning. I suppose it needs to be done every couple of years or so.
This video resonates with me quite a bit. I’ve felt like an insane person for loving the RP and seeing so much hate for it on RUclips. I bought one immediately after it was released just to taste the RF system then I sold it when I had the opportunity to buy an R for a great price- then I missed the sort of “fun” feeling of the RP, so I bought another one. Then I got an R6 when it was new and sold my R and second RP to fund the purchase, and again I missed the RP. These days I leave the R6 at home for casual outings and shoot with my phone because I don’t want to break or lose my R6, and I find myself doing exactly what you mentioned here, worrying about the shutter count and resale value. I shoot haircuts for Instagram, and I think the RP is just freaking SPOT ON dollar for dollar the greatest value to do that.
Thanks Andrew, yes this is the thing, its about what you will actually use. The specs and what the camera can do are all well and good but what are you picking up to use and is it doing the job. Thats what matters in the end and leaving and expensive camera at home is logical and all the more reason not to have one. Unless of course it is your job and benefits you but then it wouldnt be left at home. Glad you found a camera that you are happy with and actually use!

I originally owned the Canon 6D and now own the Canon RP. Fits in the palm of your hand, auto focus is next level and high ISO useable up to 12800 comfortably I have found. Can also USB charge it with a power delivery power bank which is useful for road trips. Many complain about the battery life but for studio work and travel it's perfect I turn the camera off when not in use versus walking around with the screen on or in standby.
4K auto focus not good for moving subjects but 1080p is fantastic and usually upscale to 4K bitrate anyway for RUclips for higher quality. I'll just use my GoPro 7 for 4k UHD if I need high fps video.
Great perspective. I have an RP, EOS R and a R6. I weddings and portraits occasionally some creative content for local client. I get totally pissed off that my RP shots are equal and sometimes better than my more expensive R6. I also have a 90D it holds its own with the mirrorless R’s and it’s crop sensor 🤯l have three pieces of L glass but my RP with a non L 85mm is showing my best work. I shot an event with the RP and some of the other photographers thumb their noses at me for using an Amateur camera. It was a non profit event still only. Quite frankly I got incredible results. The RP handle awesome in a crowded venue!

Can you share more on the settings you used for event coverage and the details of the event? I just purchased an RP and I do event coverage for work so I’m trying to see what works best for the majority of situations. (I cover a lot of inside events such as gyms, schools, auditoriums btw)

Yes! That is exactly why I am leaving the Fuji system. Wonderful files that look "fake" to my eye, and totally unusable cameras with tons of sub-sub-menus. The user interface of my XT-4 is a nightmare and makes me feel like I don't want to pick up my camera and shoot. With Canon is another story, with the RP even more, It makes everything fun and easy.
@@davidevalentiofficial Interesting you mention Fuji. I have tried to shoot with several of their cameras and yes, every time, I end up sending them back because they are so frustrating to use. I think the files are okay if shooting outside in good light, but their high ISO performance is not great and their menus ARE frustrating. I never knew what haptics mean until I tried shooting with Sony and Fuji; Canon (and maybe Nikon) are the only ones who get it right.

Bloody hell, I just stumbled on this video, and thought I recognized your name. I remember ready your blogs on your webpage years ago when the Nikon D700 was your main photographic tool for weddings, then later on when you purchased the FujiFilm XE-1 and posted some cracking results with that too, which inspired me to be where I am today, so thanks for that. Excellent content here too and instantly subscribed. I myself purchased the RP, (Mainly for video, due to the cracking autofocus) and also enjoying the quality for photography too. Mind you the 24-105mm f/4-7.1 kit lens bothered me a little, with trying to ascertain focus lock at 105mm in very low interior light, but other than that, I'm using it more than my Nikons at the moment, and I'm really relishing the quality over the cost of this camera, oh, and the size, truly a carry everywhere tool. I to am now not worrying too much about just using the gear, even though the marketing is getting more and more enticing and sophisticated with trying to tempt me to purchase the next greatest tech. You made some excellent points. I've been a photographer for a lot of years, specializing in people photography. I've shot quite a few different brands of cameras and settled on Canon as my main and ultimately only brand that I use. My primary reason is the color rendition that Canon produces. No other brand that I've shot can match it, particularly with people. Their menu system is simple and easy to use and the ergonomics, at least for me, is great. I have the R and R6 and about a half a year ago purchased the RP, primarily to shoot street photography, which I'm doing in my spare time when I have spare time. It's a perfect camera for that and I've made some excellent images using the RP. I like it for its size and I'm not able to put a battery pack on it, so it keeps the size small. I'm a battery pack fanatic, every camera I own has a battery pack because about 90 percent of my shots are verticals and I like having the controls where they're easy to reach without contorting my arm over my head--and I like having the extra battery, which gives me longer shooting times. Another reason, an important reason, is Canon's customer service, I belong to Canon Professional Services and I recommend them to any pro photographer, they do good and fast work on cameras and lenses. I could most likely use the RP for pretty much all of my shooting, including my studio shoots, if I wanted to. It's a great camera, and you did an extremely good job of explaining why it's such a good camera. Keep up the good work.
Hi Guy, thanks for that its interesting you have a similar conclusion I think the RP has been largely overlooked, ill probably get an r5 or r6 later not sure yet though. probably the r5 but only once the price has dropped a lot more, in the meantime ill be very happy with the rp, maybe even enough to wait for whatever comes out next. Same thing for non pro with the M line, M50 II o M200, everything works, great Canon colors, great autofocus, great screen, and a ultra cheap price.
Almost five months later..., a little update. Started using it for paid jobs. For using it in the studio I bought some high wattage LED lights which I prefer over my flashlights. It is like starting my professional career all over again. Back then in the Derbyshire hills in a small village called Hadfield. My first paid job was a photo of a musician called Victor Hickling also known as Victor Brox. The print was used as an autograph thingy for a tour in Germany. 1978 it was.
The RP gives me this feeling of creative freedom while being light-weight and just basic for modern standards.

I just got an RP and I'm really excited to get into using it. I had an old Nikon film SLR back like 20 years ago but sold it to go all digital, but I couldn't afford a DSLR, so I've been using a Canon G15 for years (point and shoot with manual controls and RAW). I finally had enough money for a $1,000 camera (expensive to me) and decided that the RP would be the best place to start. A full frame mirrorless with a flip-around screen and decent video. I'm completely satisfied with it so far, other than the battery not lasting long, but I do have 5 batteries. Got it like-new used with a 24-105mm RF lens for $950.

I bought the RP for vintage manual lenses to use on a full frame sensor, there is so much great vintage glass to take advantage of without breaking the bank. Also being a mirrorless you can adapt most anything to it.
Same! I wanted to see my Helios 44-2 in all its glory. I was otherwise perfectly happy with only owning APS-C sensor cameras.
I like your attitude bro. I work 5 years behind the the curve to let everyone thrash it out. I just got a 2nd hand RP with a new battery grip and it's brill. Have an M6 Mk2 and a 5D mk2 and it'a all brill for my non pro corner x

Great advise, Martin. I collect cameras, and use them every day for landscape, still life, and street. I have a little Canon M2 18mp with only 1 dial and maybe 2 buttons, and I love it the same way I love an old VW bug. I live in an area where I have every reason to expect my camera to be ripped off my body or out of my car at any moment. Also, I can't resell from here. So I buy cameras I'm not afraid to use and loose. (Hint: a scenic town in Mexico that looks and feels a lot like Disneyland.) The Canon RP is my next purchase. Thanks!

Love your video, I have spent a significant amount of money chasing specs and new cameras and am now just starting to understand that I have yet to use any camera to it’s full potential. I’ve just been excited to get my hands on new equipment but it’s been an expensive mistake. Great video mang. I own a RP with the native 70-200/2.8 and the 50/1.8 and it totally nails skin tones, I’m not a professional but gets constant compliments on my work with the RP, for the money it can’t be beat.
RP is really my main camera now, I havent really found it lacking in much yet!

I did when I first got it but I rarely use it now. I bought the 70-200 f2.8 and the 50 f1.8 that I use primarily now. I want a wider angle premium lens but $$$

Two years ago, I bought the RP + RF24-240. Replaced my 600D (18MP APS-C) + Tamron 18-270. Loved the old gear for 10 years. Could not be happier. Until I did a test out between the two. A crop from the RP @270 was better than a full image from my 600D@270 (=400+). Bought the RP and loving it.
I don't do video so its shortcomings there do not worry me.
Since added R50 + RF100-400. Both FF lenses can be used on either. Same battery. In camera lens correction for jpegs is great.
The R50 has some later / better specs than the RP and with that 100-400 I've got the occasional very long reach covered.

I had gotten the RP myself and wanted to see someone else's opinion. I shoot with a pureset perspective, so the RP is really good for me. The things that I may not like is the lack of IBIS and Weather Sealing. Obviously, those things weren't a deal-breaker for me. Like you said, the foundational features of the RP are solid. It's a basic competent tool that will get the job nicely done.
For me I think I’d like to be able to turn off the ibis on the r5,6 independently for filming myself. The ibis looks awful and would be a bit of a deal breaker for me. I think canon in general needs to give photographers more control of their cameras and as such the rp does about everything I can expect from a canon
@@MartinCastein you’re right about IBIS and video. It’s great for stills, but OIS alone is still better for video.
I live in sweden I shot with canon rp and rf 24-105 f4 in very difficult weather conditions, rain ,snow, wind from minus 15 to plus 35 celsius etc, no problem with weather sealing, rp work very good, I shot long exposure 30 sec in the rain camera work

Hankering after another RP. Like others on here i had an RP and loved it. Got caught up in the upgrade race and moved to an R8. Yes, it’s a better camera but i just don’t use half of the things that are on there. I never use video and the amazing AF tracking etc. It is really good but i went on safari and the RP coped very well. I shot Cheetahs running at 70mph or whatever and had no problems getting sharp, in focus shots.
I just need to dial out of this marketing race and buy the camera that has features i need and use, and no more, i suppose.
Great video, Martin. I guess if you understand how things work, getting decent shots with any relatively modern camera is possible.
What's your opinion on the eye-detect focus? Let's say a head & shoulders portrait, 85mm f1.4 wide-open.
Does it nail the focus on the actual eye/pupil, or is it generally around the eye socket/forehead?
It's literally the only reason I'm thinking of a Canon mirrorless because I could concentrate on composition (focus-recompose on my 6D works, and I love the camera, but having the ability to put the camera on a tripod, and chat to the subject, whilst the camera takes care of critical focus is very appealing.
Oh it works really well, i think the focus is probably even better on the r6 r5 etc. but yeah its pretty reliable and goes for the iris itself, thats what ive found so far, hit rate is good with it. If you want to shoot at 1.4/1.2 then mirrorless is a bit of a game-changer really.

I had an EOS RP in 2019 I think, but that camera failed both as replacing my old Foveon SD15 on landscape still, and also failed as 4k camera because Canon decided to delete the autofocus on 4k: literally baited by iPhone X on handeld videos.

The RP was my first mirrorless. I loved it, especially for stills. It was a little lacking in what I needed for video, which is why I ultimately upgraded, but it's an excellent camera.

The RP looks like a real bargain. I have more cameras than I have time to shoot but that doesn’t stop the appreciation. For a grand one could accomplish a lot.
It is as long you only want photo, only 1080p video, no slowmo and just basic autofocus/tracking, nothing "fancy" like animal eye AF, focus stacking, or so...
I had the RP and enjoyed it for about 2 years, but i sold it with rest warranty before any "RP Mk2" is released. Good decision it turned out now with the R8.
Im now at a R7 since about a year (with RP+R7 for a while) and after a bit regretting the R7 purchase in the beginning (shutter shock, software issues), after firmware/UI problems are fixed, shutter shock issues are very lens depending (RF 800 F11 mainly/only) i dont regret it anymore, R7 is beside the crop sensor better in anything else especially a charme with many unstabilized lenses with IBIS.

I do like the RP a lot. Tethered support in capture one is nice. The profiles in LR look good. Only thing than can suffer for me is shadow recovery. A7III for low light is fine with a 50mm f1.8, RP for low light you would need a 50mm F1.4 and be more careful with it; other than that I really like it. 👍

RP is a bit on the smooth side, however I'd rather have my work smooth than noisy due to a lack of light AP-C or too much light.

Hey there! I'm now considering buying this camera over the Canon 5D mark IV thanks to your video. The 5D seems like a great camera, but people keep complaining about the technology of it being outdated. It seems to me as though the image quality is probably similar between both systems, and that Canon just wants to sell more things to people by changing their mounts. What do you think about this? Am I mistaken? Which camera would you recommend to me? Thanks in advance for your help!

I've been thinking about the RP lately. It's tempting to chase specs and jump systems or get a mortgage to buy some R5 you'll never need all the features of. But reality is that I took great pictures on the 5D, 6D, 5D2, and I would like to get into mirrorless for the full aperture composing and accurate focus for fast lenses, and being compatible with my good lenses. The RP has a 6D2 sensor in it, which isn't anything to scoff at. I could justify going up to an R for the build and battery compatibility, the 5D 4 sensor is a bonus.. but it's probably better to get the RP and just wait until the R6's trickle down to the depreciation value sweet spot where the RP sits at now. I can pick up an RP locally for all of 600 bucks, and an adapter ring for like 60, that's amazing for what you're getting really. That's like ONE really good lens that might actually resolve the 26Mp sensor in this thing
The RP is my first full frame and I upgraded from a Sony A6000 that I got in 2015! To be honest, buying this camera refurbished was what I could reasonably afford. I'm super happy with it and hopefully I can purchase a great lens for it down the road. Thanks for your insight Martin
I'm thinking of upgrading from my old rebel to this camera. All the reviews I've seen are from photography snobs with their heads up their arses complaining about how this camera doesn't match their elite picture taking skills of random flowers, buildings, and hands. This is clearly an full-frame, entry level, affordable camera aimed at beginners, hobbyists, or people that want a beater camera to carry around.
Kind of wishing I had bought an Roma’s my first camera instead of an Sony a6400. Just prior to focus there was a ridiculous cheap deal for the rp and a 24-105 rf f4
For me, the only thing the RP lacks is a joystick but that didn't stop me from buying one. As a simple, lightweight kit for hiking and travel (especially if you're going places like cities where it might get nicked), it's great.
However, I don't think it's fair to say the RP is all you need as a hobbyist. If your genre happens to be wildlife/birds/action or anything needing heavy cropping, the RP is really not up to that.
I have a very old 7D and its starting to fail me. I have a very low budget but need to upgrade for my photography hobby which is essentially wildlife, landscape and the beginning of astrophotography. The one thing that stops me from buying this camera is that its only got a mere 4 FPS. But does that really matter as much as I think it does? Is that really all im paying for if I go for a camera with 30 FPS? I dont make money out of my photography but I do have friends and family who like to frame my photographs, so they still need to be of quality.....
I’m thinking to buy either RP or R10 planning as a hobby for pet photography (mostly cats) indoor and outdoor and I don’t know which one to choose, I don’t have a big budget so my options are limited but I still want yo have a decent camera

Hey Martin again love your videos, so I have the opportunity to get a rp with the 24-105 f4 from lens for 1200 or a 6d with a 50 1.4 for 350 , if you were in a situation where you had to try and make money from your portrait work what would you do, get the rp and go at it or get the 6d and some speed lights and soft box , thanks in advance
I wouldn’t get the 50 1.4 at all. Will it be studio work mostly?

This video make me think the of reason why I gave up with Fujifilm after a while using my XT-4 and coming back to the Eos system with the RP. I guess we all agree the RP is not the best high end specs on paper camera on the market, not at all for sure. But that ease of use, that feeling you get from the camera while using it, is something no top specs can give. I literally hated my Fuji XT-4 for it's freaky menu system I couldn't get used to even after a while. Yes, the XT-4 raw files are absolutely amazing with their fantastic dynamic range, sharpness and bla, bla, bla. But, at the end of the day, the pictures looked too "artificial" to me, if you know what I mean. So I totally agree with you and that is why I came back to the RP. Cheers!

Good points. If you're a pro, it's more important to get the tool that does the job you want and one enjoy using every day. Money shouldn't come into it. I'd personally get the R for the bigger grip, battery and bigger view finder.
Thanks Martin. That was a very helpful video and a good reality check for me. I am doing photography as a retirement hobby with a Canon 60D and a Lumix GX80. (I bought the Lumix for a holiday that never happened because of Covid but I like the focus peaking for macro.) I am not sure if I should upgrade the Canon 60D, as it is OK most of the time but sometimes the 9 focus points are limiting. Canon seem to have given up on DSLRs and the APS-C format and are pushing us to the R series cameras. I can't decide whether I should go full frame or if the lenses would be too heavy. I liked the look of the Canon R6 but not the price and, as you say, the RP makes more sense for someone like me, even without IBIS. Now I have to decide whether to go for the Canon RP, a used Canon 80D, a Fujifilm XT-4 or (for nostalgic reasons) perhaps an Olympus E-M5 or E-M1.
I would go for mirrorless if you can as the advantages for autofocus alone are well worth it. All of this systems are good. Depends what you shoot and what you want, for me I’d look seriously at the Fuji and canon. Go with what you are more drawn to and you’ll probably be happy with either.

Using 80D, obtained new 2019; also 1000D from way back. 80D does reasonable job for my average capacity but now looking to RP with EF adaptor to realise better results from EF glass. Must say can achieve acceptable street results from 80D paired with Canon 50mm 1.4.

For professional work I still use my old Nikon D700 and D800. I've never thought about other cameras. Just got the RP to try mirrorless and to start doing some content creation. The RP is honestly a content creation machine. It's cheap, easy to use, effective at what it does well and just a capable camera. It's far better than most cameras in its price range, it's better than older DSLRs It's just a great camera that gets hate because it doesn't have 20fps and it doesn't shoot 4k full frame. It's just a great camera.
The Rp is excellent as a content machine, pretty good at everything and as you say its cheap for what it does.
I have both the Nikon D700 and D800 too and thinking about trying the Canon RP to try mirrorless.
@Y Bell it's great. I love it, but if you're a nikon shooter go with the Z5. Get the adapter to use your old lenses. Might be worth it for you unless you need the flip out screen

@Y Bell they are almost the same. The flip out screen is the biggest difference and the Z5 has two memory card slots where the RP has one. If that doesn't matter, and you don't mind buying other lenses from Canon then the RP is cheaper and probably is all you will need.
The only thing I really miss in my RP is some form of image stabilization.
I know what you mean, canon has to allow us to turn it off though independently of other stabilisation settings

But there is one thing that I really need in my camera lately, and that is silent shutter. I am so said that it is somewhat crippled in the RP. As far as I know it can be used in scene mode as well as in any mode when focus bracketing is enabled.
My problme with that is that at this point I mainly use adapted manual glass, and I am still planning to use them with the RP. Do you know if the camera still uses silent shutter when used with adapted lenses? I am speculating maybe with the EF adapter with a dumb adapter put on it ( for example RF-EF + EF-M42), might force the camera to engage the silent shutter the same way it does with the normal shutter.

the silent shutter on the RP is hopeless, i dont know the answer to your question but i can tell you it will be miserable for me to even test it out. If silent shutter is a must get the R.

@@alcedo_kf its a scene option like lady with hat, flower icon and mountain icon and has no control its just full auto. If you want silent shutter your cheapest option is the EOS R. hope that helps.

The one thing stopping me buying the RP is the AF;
Any thoughts on the RPs 4 FPS in C-AF for caprturing subjects like kids, sports, wildlife, anything fast moving etc... Is it enough in the real world? Is the AF fast & accurate enough? Can the EVF keep up? And is it any good at tracking subjects?

Agreed. It's good enough for anything. I think the money for more expensive models is better spent on better computer specs to make the next part of the process quicker and easier.

Martin, I was wanting to buy the Canon R6 but I’m confused as to why this camera sharpens RAW files when shooting? To me this is completely counter to shooting RAW.
All raw files are edited by cameras. It’s kind of a shame it’s called because that implies it’s straight off the sensor but there is no such thing. Sharpening noise reductions and colour palette are written to the file it’s better to think of it as a very flexible JPEG in some ways

Hey Martin, I just bought the RP a few days ago for travel and possibly some paid stuff down the line. Quick question. As a pro photographer, has not having dual card slots on a camera ever been a hindrance for you to not use it on a small paid gig?
it depends on the shoot, im not keen on single card slot for weddings, most other things are repeatable or you can tether to a computer. It depends on the value of the shoot too. Generally id say dont worry about it. The important thing is you use the best quality card you can.
When you're paid and you cannot re-shoot (eg Wedding, family event) it makes sense to play it safe. I find 2 cameras might be even more safe in that situation. I never had a card fail, but a flash controller when the bridal party went down the aisle. I missed a few shots, but had a second shooter from a different, wider angle, natural light. That saved it, and a second card slot would not have made a difference. As Martin mentioned, and they may also need replacing after some years, depending what you put them through ...😊

I was happy with the images and really liked the compact size and overall ergonomics. Also I was pleasantly surprised by the solid feeling build quality - despite it being polycarbonate. The biggest negative for me was battery life but I would just carry spares
Great to stumble upon your video and insights as I have been procrastinating for ages now on updating my humble 9 year old Canon 700D APS-C and Ive been bouncing back and forth between Canon 90D or gong full frame with Canon RP. What puts me off about RP is the restrictions on video dimension and fps when using ef-adaptor to use ef lenses - The 90D however doesnt appear to offer any improvement in noise or clarity but 4k uncropped video and using my lenses without adaptor and restrictions is making it tough to decide when budget is also restricted! The RP may offer better nicer bokeh full frame for my portrait work but I still cant decide so still carrying on with 700d fr now trying get the max I can out of it
I think that considering you have apsc lenses you could go with the 90d you could just ad a 50mm 1.8 for portraits I think that’s enough for shallow depth of field. 🙂

I think you made a really good point here. I do own the R5 and guess what on my surfing vacation last week to Spain I made all my pictures with my iPhone. I was too afraid that the camera could get stolen or at least damaged in the sand or whatsoever. When I came back I started thinking to address that point and looking for a cheaper body. I thought to get maybe a Sony A7 IIIc But the camera costs still €2000 at the moment. Also during walks and most of the time I don’t bring the R5 anywhere to keep it safe and nice. How can you get better if you behave like that? You really brought this whole issue to its point 👏👏👏 btw enjoying your English or British accent. :)

…a little late, anyway! I had the RP for a while in use, together with the RF50. The camera itself was a joy to use, autofocus works perfectly for me, wonderful viewfinder and rear display, easy carrying, really a fun camera! Unfortunately I was never able to get the gorgeous colours I´ve got from my old Pentax K-5IIs and a DA Prime. Working on the raw files was rather annoying and at the end the results were mostly not to my taste. Maybe my own inability, maybe the RF lens is not my thing. A great pity really.
we all want the amazong r6 and r5 . 10bits video. when in fact. non of us here have a big youtube channel. RP is amazing and when you grow stronger and larger then upgrade the body
I think the major three things that the RP lacks for most people is the lack of weather sealing, no dual card slot, and low FPS shutter. So if you are shooting sports, anything around water, or things that can not be repeated, the RP is not for you. But for everybody else it's a great camera that can get 80% of what most people need done.
Hi Jerrard, thanks for your comment, yes you are right but also think the price point needs to be taken into account. The battery life is an issue too. But it is a good little all round camera, I’ve take it to some remote areas in Scotland and it’s been fine and has ultimately handled most situations including some rain too.
Jerrard.. could you recommend a camera that's $2000 or less. Not looking to spend a ton for a camera but i need something to record my year in Thailand coming up. I'll be there next summer and basically i need a camera that records good 4k footage, especially of the water and nature. And i'll use it to venture out and record nightlife as well. So street videos and ocean/beach videos, vlogging and a RUclips channel to show all the footage. Can you think of something that would work for me? Not that great with cameras. I was looking at some of the sony's, fijifilms's and canon's.

It’s a bit better for colour yes but I think it depends what you photograph, what does the R offer that the RP doesn’t? Battery life is definitely one thing and that might matter a lot.

This is a difficult one, ive had 2 sd cards fail before, one happened the day after a wedding, i can say one card was a lexar card so id almost not include it and the other was a sandisk card an extreme pro. You can have corrupt files with some cameras nowadays if you dont use UHS-ii cards. if you shoot on 2 cameras at the same time which is always a good idea for weddings then youd only lose half of the shots potentially if nothing was recoverable. Only you can ultimately decide that. If it would worry you all the time then id go for dual card slots. I should make a video about this actually.

If I were a professional, especially shooting one-off events like weddings, the single SD card slot on the RP would probably be a deal breaker for me, despite all the other strengths of this camera. But I guess having 2 cameras on hand would offer some peace of mind.
Yes it’s up to you individually, I prefer two card slots as well personally but I have shot many weddings with cameras with one slot, incidentally the card that failed happened the day after a wedding, I had downloaded the photos and backed them up, formatted the card went out to take photos in London and the card failed. I was really glad it didn’t happen the day before.
How do you check out the shutter count on an RP?

@@robertturnbull4976 oh for sure, id go with the RP for the better focus system, it has eye tracking and youll appreciate that, just remember its a different lens mount so youll need RF lenses or an adapter for EF lenses and Id get a used but in good condition spare battery from MPB

You mentioned battery life with your Sony and that to you it was a NoGo in cold environments. What about the RP?
I didn’t really have the rp in really cold conditions for long I think if this is what you are after you should look at the eos r or similar with the larger batteries. The a7 focus will make you cry.

probably but ive not owned the 6d mark 1, id say though, just because the sensor is the same doesnt mean the colours have to be.
It is a great wedding camera . most wedding photos don't go higher than 11x14 most are delivered 4x6
You are definitely the voice of reason especially given the current refurbished price @ Canon USA of $599 USD with a one year factory warranty included. It’s truly a no brainer. I was going to purchase the R8 as my first Canon mirrorless but I changed my mind. I could even add the warranty and accidental coverage for four years at only $149 which makes the total $748 a true steal, less than many crop sensor offerings.. Bottom line you made a very good point of not being in the race to purchase the latest greatest super expensive Canon body only to have it depreciate and have to handle It with kid skin gloves.

I need to compare more I’m planning a comparison review but so far I think rp colour is very good and a lot better than the R, I can’t give you a proper answer yet it’s something I want to test properly but I’ll say it felt “at home” in what I’d expect a proper canon to be… so far anyway.

Dont You think 1080p on eos rp looks soft? Maybe its line skipped? Hard to find proper info but on some examples it looks softer than 1080p from Canon m50!

thank you for the sane & down to earth review. since you have and adore the 5D classic (my current gear) and the rp (my desired gear), how would you compare the image of the two? is the rp close in some ways to the render of the 5D? I'm not interested in autofocus, speed, newer features (apart from the zebra highlight option), etc., I care solely for the rendition on the image. I will never ever sell my 5D, it's just that it's so heavy and bulky, a refurbished rp (being small and light) seems like a great option. cheers!
The 5d classic is unique, the rp has very nice canon colour and rendered image and I think most people will be very happy with it. It’s small and light especially paired with the smaller lenses.

I totally agree. I own a canon 50D, I bought it new in 2009 and I’m still using it. It is a good camera, still capable of shooting good photos. Especially after installing Magic Lantern… But it is aging and now I started seeing all its flaws.
I was able to take it anywhere I want without worrying about anything. it is build like a tank and not too expensive to be worried about thefts.
Now I think I need a new, better, preferably full frame camera. And canon RP seems to be the best option for me. And definitely it is the best value for money especially is you buy it used in good condition for around 800£. I own a few EF/EFS lenses, a couple of vintage lenses which I’ll be able to use with the Canon RP. I’m not a professional photographer, I don’t make money making photos… why would I pay more?
Perhaps 🤔 I can get a canon R used for 1000£… or better an RP…. 😂😂😂😂
hmmm hard to say whats better, in some ways the battery is the decider between these two, the battery life of the RP is actually fine but the downside that really affects me is they drain really fast when you arent using them. If that doesnt bother you then it doesnt really matter which you go for.
Martin I bought 2 A6600's for just that reason, I also have an A7R4 but I use the 6600's to pack on a motorcycle, drag through the woods, use in the rain and not worry

Most should go for the RP I think for it’s modern features. 6d 1 takes better photos ultimately but not by loads

I have only one question - is the absence of sensor cover an issue for RP? Does it make the sensors prone to dust a lot?
It doesn’t seem to attract dust but you will have to be very careful changing lenses as an exposed sensor is an exposed sensor so act accordingly really 🙂
At the worst, have it cleaned by an expert for some money or do it yourself (there are youtube videos that show hoe). It happened to me after 1.5 years of usage - high values apurtures revealed few random little black spots. They were gone after a careful cleaning. I suppose it needs to be done every couple of years or so.
