@@chibuzonweze3291 a lot easier, is the answer 😂 honestly - unless you’re shooting a commercial or feature film or something that you’re getting paid for and need the highest quality, I really recommend not shooting in log. It’s far quicker/easier (subjective terms) to shoot properly and do less in post. By NOT shooting log you’re already far closer to the final image.
Little RP tip... If you initiate Sensor cleaning and then turn the power switch to off, after 2 and a half clicks the shutter curtain stays down like the R does. Turning the camera back on retracts the sensor. I use it most of the time and haven't had any issues.
Oh wow! I can’t believe this works! It just makes me ask why canon didn’t just make it work like the R if it has the curtain there to protect it anyway! Thanks so much for this tip!
I just ordered a new RP (hey at $899 it is a steal). Already have the R7 for action/wildlife and would like full frame as well. This is one of the things that troubled me about the RP but seeing this is a fantastic fix!
This tip is the most insane tip for RP, and especially for me in Minnesota dealing with outdoor winter!!!! All these years wonder about sensor getting dirty gone!
Keep in mind that if you accidently touch the curtain it is way worse than touching the sensor, which is covered by filter from hard glass. I touched accidently the sensor of RP once, and I know if there was the shutter in front of it it would be way worse. However it is a good idea if you want to change the lens and want to protect the sensor from dust. but now I am using EF-EOS adapter so it is not easy to touch the sensor ....
My sons therapist recommended for him to take a hobby to help with depression , so we ended up taking up photography been something we could do togeather and both learn from , brought a r and the rp , both cameras are awesome for what we use them for , but I find the rp just so much easier and more compact to use, can’t tell the difference in images really , may be a pro could get the most out of them , but reckon they will last us a lifetime
My photography started as therapy during a tough time in my life so I can totally relate. It’s very powerful. Beach sunsets were my medicine. I agree both cameras are fantastic and there’s not much between them at all. I certainly couldn’t tell the difference between the final images. And the RP is so incredible light and compact! A great travel camera. Good luck with your journey with your son. Fantastic you are doing it together. Thanks for leaving this comment too.
Just got the RP and I'm still using it with old EF lenses with lens attachments. Even with those it's done everything I hoped it would and got some beautiful shots. Can't imagine pictures being any sharper tbh.
Fantastic to hear. While I’m a fan of the RF lenses (only because it’s one less adaptor and I like the programmable ring for quick ISO adjustment) - people totally overplay the effect any new gear can have. People took great photos 50 years ago with what was available then and it kills me when you see videos pixel peeping to try and see a difference. Especially for anyone who isn’t shooting for massive billboards. Glad you’re enjoying it!
@@garethbartlett I will be getting an RF lens eventually. I'm sure it will be a lot faster and better on this camera but a good lens is a good lens regardless of when it was made. BTW I've heard of people saying it's hard to change ISO on this camera but I'm using the m-fn button on the top right to do it rather quickly. I just use the scroll wheel to adjust ISO and it's quick enough for me. Not sure how that compares to the ring on RF lenses.
I couldn't care less about any other RF lens properties, but they get me on size. Not only are EF lenses longer and bulkier, you also need to use the converter which adds to the bulk.
@@dingdingdingdiiiiing yeah I used the 15-35, 24-105 and the 70-200 (I think it was those anyway!) and they were all the same size and form factor with switches in the same place. It was a great experience.
Great video! RP has been our main camera for a while now. It's excellent for travel video content that we create and for the price, you can't beat it. We got ours brand new for €999 with the 24-105 lens included.
Thanks for the kind words. I love it as a travel camera. It’s so compact. It still surprises me now after all these years when I pick it up without a lens. That’s such a great price with the lens too!
Nice video! (Miami native here...glad you enjoyed my home) Use my RP for RUclips channel with the EF 35mm f/2 and LOVE it. Decent enough quality for RUclips!
Amazing delivery of information, and even more amazing personality my man! Hilarious cliff hanger at the end too. Thanks for making this for the world!
I think the problem with the RP when it was released was that too many content creators were much too eager to hold it to the same standards as more expensive full-frame mirrorless bodies like the Nikon Z6 or the Sony α7 III. I even recall a video where they were seriously trying to argue the case against the RP because they pitted it against an α7R IV with a G Master lens versus the RP's 50mm 1.8. As if that was ever meant to be the RP's competition... The RP was always meant to be one thing: A cheap introduction to the full-frame mirrorless market. It remains the cheapest full-frame mirrorless body in the market to this day and if you only care about photos and up to a semi-professional level, the RP is one of the most compelling options today. As a long-term EOS M user (mainly M6 and M3), I was glad to upgrade to the RP. Not only a terrific performance boost, but also superb low-light results and the eye-tracking AF is an absolute treat for me as a portrait photographer. Not to mention that I didn't need a single new battery pack thanks to my M models. The only thing that is slightly disappointing is the burst speed of 4fps. That would be the only reason why I'd get the R8 in the future, if I needed to. But that said, there isn't much else that I dislike about my RP and I am looking forward to keep getting the most out of it.
These are some really great points. Thanks for taking the time to type them out! Definitely agree that a big problem against the RP was the early perception and a reputation it’s got. So glad you’re enjoying it for photography. Thanks for sharing your experiences here George!
Love my RP. Got a mint used one for £500. I’m a stills guy with very occasional video so it fits my requirements very well. There are no perfect cameras; the trick is to find one that’s perfect for you. Great video; thankyou.
Actually I am photographer with D850 nikon and I rearely have concern of vedio and I am nikon fan but recently I start do small vedios and search for light weight and budget vedio Camera and my vediographer friends usually use Canon and some moved to sony so I watched your review and its really good and respect the mind
Thank you so much. I’ve enjoyed both Sony and Canon over the years though never got on with Nikon - but it’s all personal preference. So many good cameras out there. I keep being surprised how light and compact the RP is. Great travel camera.
The RP is on sale for $699 with kit lens, the R6mkII is $2500 body only. I'm really tempted to just get the RP for now. Sure, I like the R6 but do I like it 4x as much? Hmmm... This is coming from an ancient T3i so anything would be an upgrade.
Vacation and vehicle photography. I could buy the RP now, invest in some nice lenses and when the R6mkII price drops in a year or so pick that up. But it's tough to avoid the temptation to spend more and get a bigger body and better AF right now, even if I probably wouldn't notice the difference.
@@OffTrackProductions that sounds like a super sensible plan - especially if you’re just doing photography. The differences when you don’t have to worry about video are far less, in my opinion. Lenses over body every time too 👏
for a hobby photographer like me who is most of the time taking pictures during trips, barely take videos, i feel totally satisfied with the RP and does not feel the need for an upgrade at all.
Exactly Ken. It’s a fantastic camera for a lot of people. I dislike the idea that people feel pressured to spend money they may not have to upgrade unnecessarily. Glad you’re enjoying it. And thanks for watching
@@garethbartlettrespectfully then you should have excluded the comparison. What you’ve basically asserted is that image, functionality and speed-wise, the RP is only marginally worse than the R6 II. That’s unequivocally not true.
I'm so tempted by the RP but can't decide between that and the R10. I just want to take stills and mainly of family, portraits and landscapes. Which do you think would be the better buy? Is the R10 autofocus really that much better??
I think the good news is you can’t go wrong with either. If you don’t want video, then the difference is even smaller as the R10 does have much better AF in 4K video and finer overall detail as it’s over sampled from 6k. But for stills, I don’t think you’d see a huge noticeable difference. You might want to choose the RP for full frame and better choice of lenses available and arguably the better ergonomics due to its size. But the R10 might be better “value” if you’re at all thinking about resale value in the next couple of years. A few people would definitely say you’d be bonkers to buy the older camera. But that’s why I made this video in the first place. It’s still a full frame, great camera that I’d probably choose if I had to pick for photos only. I also shot a lot with the R and the RP side by side and couldn’t really tell any difference on stills, if that in any way helps.
And then I look at this video, which I don't even have an R, I use the old DLSR 70d, 6d and 5d mk3, I can't spend more on a hobby, but the EOS R is a nice toy, thanks for the video
Thanks for the nice comment! I had a 70d and just bought one for my son. It’s a great camera. I forgot how good it is. The 6D and 5d3 are pretty handy too 😉
There are still good deals to be had on the RP in 2024. I personally do not care about video. I am mostly into landscape photography. The RP is very tempting indeed. Great video! Subscribing now!
Such a great Video! Thanks for making this video for all of us. Did all your vlog shot using 24-105L?, it's seem quite too wide for Digital Stabilization. Also, did you recorded in 1080p for this video cuz the focus seem decent? Thank for answers in advance :) Cheers
Hey thanks so much for that lovely comment! It means a lot! I think when I was editing this I had just got the RF 16mm 2.8 (which is such a bargain for around £299). But I’m pretty sure the only shot I used that for was the B-roll shot of the 24-105 lens filmed right at the end as a pickup shot. The rest of it was on the 24-105. Which can be a bit of a beast for vlogging and I do have to go full stretch on my arm. Lucky I do have long arms! Don’t put much if any digital stabilisation on the camera for that as it does crop too much - but the lens and body stabilisation is so good. On the RP I only really shoot in 1080 because the AF is so much better than in 4K. But the sharpness of the 1080 is so much better to my eyes than 4K on DSLRs I came from. Thanks again for the chat!
Good stuff, I thoroughly enjoyed your story telling and B rolls - nice music and direction too. best of luck to you. I'm 100% sure you'll grow very soon. Quality content.
This is so kind of you. Thanks for much for not only watching but also leaving this nice comment. Can I ask how you found this video and what sort of content you like to watch?
@@rawatsumit27 I’m a still a big fan of the RP. I think it really depends what you need to shoot, what your budget is and what prices you can find cameras for sale at. I recently picked up an R7 for around £1200. It’s not full frame but the honest answer is full frame doesn’t matter as much as the other features of a camera (depending on what you’re shooting). For me the R7 has 120fps and a great 4K autofocus that I use for specific commercial jobs like shooting powerboats. For other things I’ve shot - like food or news/quick social media turnarounds then they are far less important.
@@garethbartlett just for casual shooting , family photos , portraits etc I'm not a photographer nor planning to become one , or vlog.. just want sharp bright photos out the cam. PS I do know a bit about taking photos etc as I've had a basic apsc dslr from Nikon and canon in last 10 yrs..
@@rawatsumit27 Ah then the RP should be great. Its size is idea for being able to carry around without being too bulky. The most important thing is to budget for a good lens. Lens is more important than body, most of the time.
Agreed, if ur a pro, go for the r8/r6ii. If you’re a hobbiest like mr stick the rp. I have the rp and I use my camera for family events and occasionally at my sons sporting events. It is fantastic. Yes, even for sports. Save the money and get other gear that make shooting better
Yep absolutely sensible. I even use the RP for pro commercial work now and then, when it suits. It's such a capable camera. It's bonkers. Are you using it mostly for photo or video?
I'm a professional architecture and product photographer for 8 years and have used 5diii, 6d, r. And now i use rp regularly for work. I see no reason why rp is considered "for amateur" besides from marketing Camera doesn't make the image, it's the photographer, light, & lens that's more important than the camera
That’s a great question as it’s definitely part of the success of the RP - but yes, the 25-105 L has been my go-to run and gun lens since the RF mount came out. It might only be f4.0 but it’s fantastic 9 times out of 10 unless you really shoot low light scenarios.
@@ButchFagan No doubt the R8 is a great camera. I’m not a massive fan of kit lenses. As you may have seen at the very end of this - I ended up getting an R7 because I got a new one for just £1,000. If I had to choose between a “better” camera and a kit lens or an older camera with an L lens (or one I’d prefer to use) then I’d choose glass almost every time. The M50ii I’ve used a bunch as a second cam and it’s got a great image - you’ll find the control on the R8 much improved!
Hey, thanks for the question. To be completely honest, if you'd asked this around the time I made the video, I totally would have pointed you to the online resource I had to pull it from. But I've tried having a quick Google now and can't find anything to back it up (perhaps as you might've done to lead to asking this question!). So that's a bit annoying. However, what I would say is, if you're looking to buy one or the other and low light is your key decision-making factor, then there's two things I'd probably say - 1, you realistically probably won't notice the difference. 2, maybe get a Sony? That second one was a bit jokes....but anyway, thanks for asking, sorry I couldn't fully answer.
I've had an RP for about a year now and love it and as you say very overrated and it's the person behind it that really counts. Prefere to spend my dosh on good quality glass.
Thanks for a great video, Gareth! I´ve had the RP for 3 years and it is a wonderful camera. I only do stills photography - don’t have the looks for a RUclips career ;-) - and as a stills only camera it is an even greater bargain in terms of value for money. Great low light performance (I don’t do 102,000 ISO either…) and loving the focus bracketing. All the money, I don’t spend, I spend on buying quality EF-lenses at bargain prices. 🫣
Thanks for watching and for this great comment, Brian! It’s so smart to focus spending on lenses rather than bodies! I must confess I’ve not tried focus bracketing on it! Shall have to give it a whirl! Thanks!
Absolutely no reason why not. I've used this combo for photography for years and while I have to be honest and say I've not done pet photography, people have been using far less technology to do great pet work over the years. Some will argue you might benefit from the later animal eye AF in the R7 or R8 etc. And that may be true. But hard to quantify it and will depend on your technique and style of shoots.
@@garethbartlett thank you so much for your advice. I can’t afford an expensive camera I would rather invest a bit more to the lens. Besides I’m not professional and still learning. My old Canon 550D with kit limits me … so I thought about upgrade
@@katanakatana9002 you’re very welcome. Investing in lenses over bodies is usually a good idea. Also, don’t be afraid to look second hand. There’s some great savings to be had if you want to upgrade.
I’m the average person who’s WANTS an incredible camera lol . So please could you help me decide whether I should go for the R7, R8 and maybe 90d . I’m upgrading my old 200d , my first and only dslr camera . I’ve enjoyed it and it’s helped me learn a bit but now I’m really diving into videography & photography. Mainly for video and I’m not sports or wildlife focused, I’m more street photography, family portraits, vlogs and shorts movies. I was pretty sure I was gonna go for R7 but then I got scared and thought a full frame looks more attractive and apparently more professional? After doing more research I, not that scared to go with A CROP SENSOR as I’m sure it will be a huge improvement to what I’ve been using . Another thing was that someone said the R8 is better than R7 for movies. And well the 90d is older yes less expensive with the high megapixels and being a bit more rugged and well built. So I hope you can help me decide …..
Hey, thanks for being here. The first thing I’d say is if you’re not making money from cameras then don’t break the bank and only buy what you can afford. The R8 might be “better” for video but it totally depends on what you need. The R7 is an incredible camera all round. It takes exceptional video. I’ve used it on commercial shoots and gone against Sony shooters with the latest A7 range and they’ve been blown away by how it looks. The R7 will be considerably better than the 90D (which is fab) but I think the R7 would be a better investment that would give you better all round results. As to the noticeable difference between the 7 and 8….id find it very unlikely. It all comes down to how much you want to spend. I’d say save on the body and spend the money on better lenses, if you have that choice. You can’t go wrong with the 7 or 8. You’ll think they’re both brilliant.
@@garethbartlett thank you so much, I’ve learned a hell of a lot in 2 days ! I’m really serious about getting into it but not making money any time soon lol maybe one day. I will definitely invest in good lenses although that will take longer . I feel that the 85mm F 2.0 is what I want first , that with the one it comes with (18-150mm) should do me fine right now . Currently have the EFS 50mm and a used 55-250mm which is not the best but fun lol new subscriber here so thanks 🤩
@@garethbartlett and also I think your right not going crazy as I was gonna bite the bullet and get the R6 mark ii but as I’m still very new and don’t know what the future holds I think the R7 will absolutely suffice
@@MosleydollMUA thanks for subscribing! I’m planning on a series of new content for 2024 aimed more at beginners and people who want to develop so let me know if there’s any areas you’re interested in. My main lens for versatility over the years have been 24-105. So many great ranges in there. Good luck!
The biggest advantage of the R8 is the sensor. The RP uses the sensor from the 6D Mk II which was actually a *downgrade* from the 6D for stills. It had poor low-light performance (for a full frame of its price) in real world use, and for astrophotographers was a real gutpunch as the noise was bad as was the dynamic range. The R8's sensor is the same as the R6MkII, an absolute beast with high readout rates (so very little electronic shutter wobble), low noise, great sensitivity and the AI autofocus performance is a LOT better. Internal processing is also way faster and cooler-running, hence the far improved 4K video performance. I say all this from the heart, as I nearly bought the 6D Mk II until I learned of its sensor issues.... then I nearly bought the Rp as I badly wanted a lightweight MLC. Imagine my horror upon reading that Canon had recycled the old tech. The R8 I have now and I can't imagine wanting another camera until Canon can add IBIS and Backside Illuminated CMOS into an R8-sized body.
Haha, that's an amusing story and a narrow escape for you! I think it's such a great point about how it totally depends on what your needs are. Here for astro, it doesn't sound like a great choice. But plenty of other applications where it will be a fantastic camera for someone if their budget is important and this fits their needs. I mostly use Sony FX3s for video these days and it's great. But it doesn't compare in the same bracket. Also own an R7 and that's a great camera too.
Depends what you're filming. If you're shooting product shots and don't need auto focus for tracking, or like me use a lot of manual focus anyway, then it's not such a deal breaker. Also, the AF in 4K scenarios can be totally fine - for doing RUclips videos sat at a desk for example. And the crop is irrelevant if you have the lenses to get around it or are starting from scratch. It just basically turns it into APSC in 4K. Not a huge deal. People seem to forget that people use them for different uses than themselves.
Hey Corey. Yes. As I say in the video, the R8 doesn’t crop 4K the same as the RP does, there is a 1.6x crop on the RP in 4K. Coupled with the improved 4K, if you really have to shoot in 4K then the RP is not for you. But I’d question if you really need to shoot in 4K for RUclips. I can’t stress enough that 4K is not the answer to being great at RUclips. I checked out your channel to see if I can offer any advice and I’m guessing you can’t move your camera further back, but if you want to persevere with the RP then look at getting a different lens. I picked up the RF 16mm new that’s about $300. And it’s brilliant. Also, not that you asked, so apologies if you’re not looking for it, but I’d look at either getting a light before upgrading the camera - or brightening the image in the edit. You’re great on camera, have great content ideas and your channel is quickly gathering subs so doing lots of great stuff! I wouldn’t let the 4K thing get in the way of making ace content 🙌
that is an exceptional comment my friend. I do have the RF 16mm and have made a few videos with it as well. Maybe it is just a matter of learning to be happy with 1080 and realizing that most content is still viewed in that anyhow. It's funny how we can go down these rabbit holes of thinking gear is the answer when really it is improving story telling. Stop making me look inward at my flaws...hahahaha cheers@@garethbartlett
@@coreyhall haha! No worries! I have to tell myself this stuff all the time! The 1080 quality on modern mirrorless cameras like the RP is so good compared to DSLRs that it isn’t far off the sharpness of 4K in a way. The main thing you lose with 1080 is the ability to punch in to frame shots etc. Which can be a big deal. Thanks for watching and chatting!
@@garethbartlett thank you as well, I am going to play around with my studio setup and try using my 16mm for the next few videos. I appreciate the feedback and time.
My filming is generally a gimbal-free zone! haha. I hate them. They have their uses but I don't really use unless I have to. This would all be handheld. Mostly 60 frames, sometimes stabilised in Final Cut with the native tool. But the in-built camera stabilisation is pretty good. Other than that, it's just technique for shooting - tuck the elbows in, wide leg stance and practice. Haha
I never engage hardware discussions and while I agree that the latest and greatest will afford you better images (they won’t), make zero mistakes about it. The R8 is MUCH better than the RP. The dynamic range is better, the ability to push and pull the files is much better, the AF is much better both in what it will detect, but also its stickiness and speed. My opinion isn’t conjecture:..I own both bodies.
You’re correct about the benefits. But you miss the point about what is important to some people. Not all photographers/videographers are the same or have the same needs. “Much better” is subjective and depends on what you use it for.
@@garethbartlett actually I do get it and that’s the reason why I said in another post that it would have been better to just make the video focusing on the RP. There was no reason to put it in comparison with another body. You downplayed the R8 to support your narrative.
@@FyahAlex I totally respect your thoughts on the R8. It’s fantastic. But won’t engage with people looking to have arguments about narrative on my own channel. Talk about cameras all you like but if you’re here to row about other stuff, there’s plenty of other places I’m sure you can do that.
Yes, there is a reason, some people might have a tight budget@@FyahAlex also they can buy another RF lens with an RP body rather than getting a whole body of R8 at that much price.. so yeah
Yeah video can be a deciding factor, but I will always defend the RP's video - having shot on it commercially for several years. It's very capable, depending on what your deliverable needs are.
@@ButchFagan Thanks so much - there might be times I add a bit of stabiliser in Final Cut but I usually find that you have to have pretty good steady shots in the first place to just smooth out a little in the edit. If they're super unstable, they're not really saveable in post. And I don't use any third-party plugin to stabilise - just the built-in one. Hope that's useful! Good luck with the R8 - you'll love it, I'm sure!
I’m not a massive prime guy…but for portraits I tend to go for something around 85mm. The RF version of that can be quite pricey. But I shoot a lot of film and a lot of those lenses are 50mm which is also pretty darn good for portraits. And there’s a Canon RF 50mm 1.8 that Canon sells at the moment for $169. A bargain.
I totally understand the third party battery quest. The cost of batteries is bonkers. And while I have used them plenty in the past, these days I don't use them at all as it only took one bad experience to put me off them for life. I was using a third party battery (can't remember the brand) with my RP and the battery ran out and it didn't shut down the camera in the correct way that authentic batteries do. So it just lost everything I had been recording for the past 20 minutes. That one long file wasn't "closed" correctly and so it just burned it. Might not be as important if you're only shooting short clips, or if you're not doing paid work. In which case, I'd probably go with the Hahnel stuff. I've heard good things and they do an awesome charger. But I would say I usually find that 3rd party batteries last about half as long as the official ones too sometimes, so it can be a bit of a false economy. Good luck!
I have a rebel t5i still lol I do wanna upgrade as I'd like my pics to be sharper and better and better body size. Think. It's worth getting the rp over my current?
I think it depends on what you’re shooting for and what your budget is. I had the T5i and it was a good camera for photography. The bigger question than the body really is what lens are you going to put on it? If you’re going to use a kit lens from the T5i on the RP then I’d probably say invest the money into an upgraded lens instead. If you can budget for the RP and either put a good lens on that you already have or budget to include a lens then go for it. It’s such a good camera. Will you notice the difference? Yes, but it depends on your photography. It won’t make you a better photographer but it can make it easier to work with and produce sharper results. Will you notice the extra sharpness on social media? Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on your style and subject. As for a “nicer” camera to work with - it’s a lovely step up. If you’re on a tight budget look at the RF 50mm or 16mm - they’re around $300 and are brilliant for the money.
My son has a T5i - i was thinking I’ll make a video comparing the two but it won’t be for a while yet. I was surprised when I went back and used his how good it was.
this was great info thank you! I usualy do outdoor landscape and more or less street photos I have a prime 50mm I love to use on the street and a Tamron lens for most everything else. really I'd like the idea of mirrorless now as I can just see what pic I'm getting and dont have to mess with practice shots as much. That part of dslr is pretty annoying @@garethbartlett
@@pres002 No worries! I thought the T5i had live preview so you can see what you’re getting. I could be wrong - but I think you have to engage live view by pressing a button too right of the screen. Just googled: support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART151201
I haven’t done a direct comparison as it’s been a few years since I had a 6D (was a great camera) - but I’d say the RP is a step up in almost every department. Something about mirrorless that just seems way sharper and faster. I *think* there may be some extra adjustments in the 6D for adjusting AF sensitivity but tbh I’ve never really fiddled with any of that stuff so it may depend how much you like to customize the AF settings (it at all). Also depends what you shoot. I hate encouraging people to upgrade unnecessarily - but my jump to mirrorless RP felt huge from the DSLRs.
@@garethbartlett Having read a lot, it seems the RP gets a lot of stick but cutting through the rubbish, I think it’s a great camera. It’s still expensive in the general ‘camera’ term so isn’t going to produce rubbish. I only really shoot family stuff so nothing too demanding that requires high fps. I have EF L glass and a 50mm so will require the adaptor. The body might be a bit light for my 70-200 f4 but it’ll be fine I’m sure.
Exactly - glad you could cut through some of the negativity! You'll definitely notice the lighter body - which is great for carrying around. I've used mine with the old 28-300 which is bonkers heavy. It's fine as long as you support it in the right way. The adaptor works really well with the EF glass I've used on it - but I can't praise the RF lenses enough. They're fantastic. And even some of the non-L RF lenses are incredible quality for the cost (£299 for the 50mm and 16mm off the top of my head). Let me know how you get on!
Sooo … I bought the RP to send my 5Dii to retirement, but I have to admit that in basically every light situation the 5Dii still delivers better image quality than the RP, even with an L attached to the RP (and a non-L on the 5D). How is that? I mean, the RP has better DxO specs and all …
I shoot in manual everything. Make sure to switch to the mode that has the video camera icon with an M. The. I just look at the screen and set everything manually. 1080p Aperture as low as the lens allows (usually f4 or f2.8) 25 frames per second Shutter at 50 (double your frames) Then iso as low as possible while making sure it’s exposed correctly. Use the metering by half pressing the shutter and you’ll see the meter come ip to show your exposure - you want that pretty much in the middle. Hope that helps! Let me know if there’s anything else I can explain.
@@Ramonphotography I always shoot in the Faithful setting. I’ll color correct every clip using scopes, but only very quickly to make sure nothing is horrendously off and skin tones are in the right place. The Luma scope is all I use most of the time. Bringing up mid tones a lot of the time. I always used to think having stuff contrasty looked great but it’s easy to overdo it. The color grade on this I believe was finished off using Dehancer, which I love.
@@garethbartlett thank you so much! I’ve been having trouble shooting with Eos RP that it’s almost made me sell it and just get a better camera. I only vlog here and there so nothing serious but it just bothers me how contrasty it is
Are you filming whole concerts? I’ve done this for years on cameras that had record limits and it was always just worked around by agreeing with the team/band which one song to use for changing batteries and the limit etc. Crop factor is, as I understand it, due to limitations of the sensor/processing power.
@@garethbartlett I'm in the band. Canon 6d. Can't see screen. Would rather not have limit and let record entire 1 hour set. Work around has been to use remote to stop and restart after so many songs.
@@mark52111 The reason for it, in case you wondered, is the import taxes are higher for video cameras than still cameras. So to avoid those prices you get 30 min limits by some brands. However, there are cameras you can get that don’t have them. The GH5 doesn’t. Some of the Sony’s have longer limits (A7S3 I believe) and the Blackmagic stuff. That could be your best solution. I played in bands for 20 years so know the struggle! Ha. You could also look into installing Magic Lantern on your 6D. It used to be a thing. Could add extra features etc by hacking the software. I haven’t used it in years so can’t endorse it or recommend it anymore but might be worth you checking out.
I think it depends what you need it for - if you absolutely have to shoot 4K or high speed photos then get the R10 for sure. If you have lenses where you need to retain those focal lengths on full frame then it has to be the RP (or if you want a super light, compact travel camera). Probably makes sense to get the 10 generally speaking if they’re the same money.
@@garethbartlett yeah, i sold my nikon z50 a while ago and after playing with my friend's a7iv I came back to urgently needing a camera in my life 😅 Right now Canon RP seems like a perfect one for me - it has everything I need, plus it's limitations don't really bother my way of shooting
Depends on your budget and what you shoot. If it’s just stills, maybe the RP. If you’re travelling maybe the RP. If it’s video and you have the budget then go R8. But if you’re worried about money and also need a good lens then the RP is a solid choice. Depends what price you can buy them for too.
Amazing that a camera released 4 years later is better. Wow. But the point is...put the RP in the hands of someone good at video, and you'll get a good video. Put the R8 in the hands of someone that isn't as good - and the video will be worse. The camera is not the important part. Never has been.
RP is $600 refurbished on the Canon store. You can also get the R6 for $1300. Also, the RF 24-105 f4-7.1 STM IS is $100 if you buy it with one of those bodies. I love the R (and I own the RP too). I got an RP for native grip support (no shutter wire needed and no lack of vertical shutter dial as on aftermarket R grip) and more accessible and slightly more powerful batteries. R8 makes sense if you want the I cropped 4K with no time limit and amazing updates AF. Otherwise refurb R6 does everything it does (except for unlimited video).
Honestly, I didn’t absolutely NEED the R, but I shot vertically with a grip before and missed the extra battery life that two cells gives me- the third-party workaround for the RP isn’t that bad, fwiw. If I still only had it, I’d be creating great photos. The R does have C-log video, though, so that’s a plus. I haven’t recorded yet!
@@Peter-bx7ip yeah absolutely. There’s totally reasons to go for the more expensive cameras. Have you got the f4-7.1 STM? I’ve got the L version which I’ve loved for the past few years and wondering how the cheaper version compares because it’s such a great price!
@@Peter-bx7ip batteries would be one of my too reasons for getting the R (or R7 etc) over the RP. The RP does okay with the E17 batteries but no doubt the E6 is far better.
If u only shoot fotos. get RP. If u want semi pro videos. get R8 as it has log, 10bit etc good video features. If u do both. get R8. if u wana shoot good videos and get RP, u will regret. (normal vlog videos is fine with rp). Price difference is there for a reason. No need to overthink.
Sorry, you're wrong. You don't need to shoot log to be pro or semi pro. It's something that people learn from RUclips but just isn't such a clear cut thing in the real world among real professionals. It depends on the shoot. I've had to use the RP as a professional and made many professional videos that earned companies lots of money. It's not about the camera, it's about what you do with it.
@@garethbartlett yes , good featured cameras doesn't help getting a good videos. good camera moves, lightings, compositions are involved for a good video. but it doesn't meant we should not use good featured cameras. seriously, r8 is better than rp in feature wise. log, 10bit, good quality video files etc really helps. also the additional awesome features from R8 helps getting good videos easier.
@@davidxiu8020 yeah I don't disagree with you. Just think people who can't always afford the newer camera shouldnt be told an older one is terrible when it isn't.
@@garethbartlett Configured it so that i need to have my finger on it in the right motion for a few seconds! So no worries there! Plus I only use it when filming to configure White balance! But my finger kind of miss the old joysticks that use to be there 😂
@@garethbartlett It feels like I'm not missing out on the newer cameras! There will always be something "new" and "better". I usually compare to what I had ten years ago. I could only have dreamt of a camera like the R!
It depends what you use it for. And what your budget is. For so many people they can’t just go and buy the latest thing. Lots feel pressure to spend more than they can afford because of comments like this. As I said in the video, I’ve used the RP commercially for several years. Because it worked for a lot of the jobs I did. No problems with AF or speed. Zero. Think you might have missed the point on this one.
newer yes "far superior" now thats subjective. i shoot landscape+architecture, commercially for decades and has seen most of this newer , fancier, faster, money milking marketing bells & whistles that funds camera manufacturers pockets. on that price range a landscape shooter (who doesn't need a 40fps or fancy AF) on an RP can get a good 2-3 high quality L lenses vs an R8 body alone.
talks about the RP getting a bad rap, then proceeds to talk sh!t about the R's touch bar that *nobody* uses...? I use the touch bar all the time to zoom in for focus while using the viewfinder.
That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard. But also...YES! That's great. Glad to hear someone uses it and if you're happy with how it works for you, then that's all that matters. Awesome.
But what if someone can only afford 999? Not denying the point that a 4 year newer camera is "better". But it doesn't mean someone will necessarily get "better" results.
@@garethbartlett LOL, you image looks just like the t2i, that shows you the RP sensor, just the same as the 6dII sensor, has always been a really terrible sensor, even worse than the 6d sensor.
@@garethbartlett LOL, you are the one too close minded. Because you can't even accept someone else who gives you an opinion. LOL, the image speaks for itself. I have the t2i, and your image is about the same. I've seen the RP from the date it was released, the images always looked nothing like a "full frame" camera should produce. And then going back to 6dii, it also always looked like, well, crap. But 6dii was released at a time when that image was acceptable. Now it's 2023, the R8 blows this piece of crap out of the water, and the extra money is well worth it, especially considering it's just $1300 now.
Do you have a problem always wanting to buy new gear? Hands up. No judgment....
👋🏿 major FOMO 🤣🤣
No I just want a backup camera to go beside my EOS R i’m more interested in the original R6
@@Fifthimagez Nice. What appeals about the original 6?
How do you color grade your RP video, without clog?
@@ivaniliev2272 Never a good idea to stick your fingers in there. 😁
That's a good therapist and wellcome to the club. 🤠

Wow you put a lot of effort into this video, looks really good 👍
Thank you. Thats really kind of you to take the time to say. Appreciate you.

Dude. This is exactly what I needed. THANK YOU!
So welcome! Thanks so much for watching! Did you get one?
The RP is on sale for $699 with kit lens, the R6mkII is $2500 body only. I'm really tempted to just get the RP for now. Sure, I like the R6 but do I like it 4x as much? Hmmm... This is coming from an ancient T3i so anything would be an upgrade.
That’s a REALLY good price! This video was exactly about that question of if it’s X times as good. What will you be using it for?
Vacation and vehicle photography. I could buy the RP now, invest in some nice lenses and when the R6mkII price drops in a year or so pick that up. But it's tough to avoid the temptation to spend more and get a bigger body and better AF right now, even if I probably wouldn't notice the difference.
@@OffTrackProductions that sounds like a super sensible plan - especially if you’re just doing photography. The differences when you don’t have to worry about video are far less, in my opinion. Lenses over body every time too 👏
@@garethbartlett Thanks for the advice!
Where did you find the RP for that price? @offtrackproductions

@@FyahAlex It very much depends on how you are approaching buying a new camera. I’m sorry to say I think you’ve missed the point.
Thanks so much - great to see someone else can see things clearly 😉
What a quality! Awesome video, man
Very grateful for this kind comment. Thank you!

I saw a shot of the rf 24 to 105. Did tou use the lens in this video with the RP?
That’s a great question as it’s definitely part of the success of the RP - but yes, the 25-105 L has been my go-to run and gun lens since the RF mount came out. It might only be f4.0 but it’s fantastic 9 times out of 10 unless you really shoot low light scenarios.
@@garethbartlett thanks! I’m looking at the R8. Currently use the m50. Still undecided about the R8 kit lens
"better in low light"
Would you be so kind as to point toward a source for this?
A brilliant point - the glass is so much more important. So glad you’ve had a great experience with it for a good period of time.
Thanks!

Hi Garett, do you think RP will be good for a pet photography with a lens RF24-105 F4L?

Not to mention, the RP 4k is useless with 1.6x crop and no duel pixel auto focus in 4k.
People seem to forget that people use them for different uses than themselves.
great video!
Thanks muchly! You already own canon stuff?
I bought an RP for my youtube studio camera but the crop on the 4K is so annoying, doesn't the R8 solve that issue?
Hey Corey.
Did you use a gimbal or how did the video shots came out so well stabilized?
My filming is generally a gimbal-free zone! haha. I hate them. They have their uses but I don't really use unless I have to. This would all be handheld. Mostly 60 frames, sometimes stabilised in Final Cut with the native tool. But the in-built camera stabilisation is pretty good. Other than that, it's just technique for shooting - tuck the elbows in, wide leg stance and practice. Haha
which lens were you using
This was 99% on the RF 24-105 L. The B-roll shot of that lens was shot on the RF 16mm $300 lens. Hope that helps!
@@garethbartlett my comments isn’t pro/con, R8 or RP. My comment is regarding having certain level…you know what? You’re right. I’m out.

Thanks so much man!
For those of us that don't shoot video, the RP seems to be a better deal.
Yeah video can be a deciding factor, but I will always defend the RP's video - having shot on it commercially for several years. It's very capable, depending on what your deliverable needs are.
Is rp enough for wedding photography with 16mm f/2.8, 24-105 f/4-7.1,35mm f/1.8 & 85mm f/2.
Also for travel with 100-400 f/5.6-8 and all above lens
Were the b-roll shots handheld or with a gimbal?
Hey Butch - all handheld. I’ve got a gimbal in the cupboard but I haven’t used it in years.
@@garethbartlett Good to know cause your footage looks great. I don’t want to have to carry a gimbal. I’m about to purchase the R8.
What were the lenses that were used in this video?
Hey Tony, apart from one shot showing the 24-105 lens itself (which was shot on the RF 16mm) - everything here was shot on the RF 24-105 L.

Which prime lens should i buy for canon rp to take portraits and all
I’m not a massive prime guy…but for portraits I tend to go for something around 85mm. The RF version of that can be quite pricey. But I shoot a lot of film and a lot of those lenses are 50mm which is also pretty darn good for portraits. And there’s a Canon RF 50mm 1.8 that Canon sells at the moment for $169. A bargain.
@@garethbartlett Could u recommend a camera backup batteries the good brand ones. I dont wanna blow money expensive canon batteries for Eos RP.
Worth moving from 6D to RP for better AF?
Canon 6D has considerably better image quality than the RP, but the RP has much better AF.
Sooo … I bought the RP to send my 5Dii to retirement, but I have to admit that in basically every light situation the 5Dii still delivers better image quality than the RP, even with an L attached to the RP (and a non-L on the 5D). How is that? I mean, the RP has better DxO specs and all …
how about the dynamic range?
What are you shooting to worry about dynamic range at this budget? You're not going to notice much of a difference.
How did you shoot this video? I find trouble shooting with my RP it tends to use a bunch of contrast and just looks very dark
I shoot in manual everything. Make sure to switch to the mode that has the video camera icon with an M.
The. I just look at the screen and set everything manually.
1080p
Aperture as low as the lens allows (usually f4 or f2.8)
25 frames per second
Shutter at 50 (double your frames)
Then iso as low as possible while making sure it’s exposed correctly.
Use the metering by half pressing the shutter and you’ll see the meter come ip to show your exposure - you want that pretty much in the middle.
Hope that helps! Let me know if there’s anything else I can explain.
@@garethbartlett awesome thank you! Did you shoot in neutral profile setting? I like the color grading a lot !

30 minute video limit is a big pain when filming a band. why is there a crop factor for video on rp?

Rp or R10? Both hv same price.
I think it depends what you need it for - if you absolutely have to shoot 4K or high speed photos then get the R10 for sure. If you have lenses where you need to retain those focal lengths on full frame then it has to be the RP (or if you want a super light, compact travel camera). That's a fact
Amazing that a camera released 4 years later is better. Wow. But the point is...put the RP in the hands of someone good at video, and you'll get a good video. Put the R8 in the hands of someone that isn't as good - and the video will be worse. The camera is not the important part. Never has been.
I have the canon rp right now should i get the R8 ($1,500)or R ($1,100) (body only)
I think it depends what your reasons for wanting to upgrade are. Why do you want a new camera?

@@garethbartlett yes , good featured cameras doesn't help getting a good videos. good camera moves, lightings, compositions are involved for a good video. but it doesn't meant we should not use good featured cameras. seriously, r8 is better than rp in feature wise. log, 10bit, good quality video files etc really helps. also the additional awesome features from R8 helps getting good videos easier.

newer yes "far superior" now thats subjective. i shoot landscape+architecture, commercially for decades and has seen most of this newer , fancier, faster, money milking marketing bells & whistles that funds camera manufacturers pockets. on that price range a landscape shooter (who doesn't need a 40fps or fancy AF) on an RP can get a good 2-3 high quality L lenses vs an R8 body alone.
