    I recently purchased a R8 after trading in my original 5D Mk1, 40D, and a couple of “L”lenses that I didn’t use much. I kept three. I also got the EF to RF adapter and I am please with the results of the 24-70 on the the R8. Much more testing needed using the 100-400 mk1 for wildlife photography. Thanks for review!

    Great review. I upgraded from an RP about a month ago and was surprised on how much better the R8 was. It gives me a lot more ability to create, especially with the autofocus and video upgrades. Also, some smaller pros for this camera. 1. File transfer to mobile, you can simply connect a usbc cable and open up your apple photos app and import, super fast for raw and 4K video,and no need to connect and maintain a slow WiFi connection with the canon app. 2. Connecting this to your computer for video conferencing, again no need to use canon software (webcam utility) anymore, just connect the usbc and it works everytime.
    Lastly, one of my must haves for the RP/R8 is the Sunwayfoto PCL-RP dedicated L bracket for extra grip for your pinky. Made of metal, really solid, doesn’t add much weight, helps provide more balance to heavier L glass like the 50 1.2, provides Arca Swiss, and it’s 2 piece so you can remove the portrait orientation portion of the bracket. It provides more functionality and flexibility than the canon eos rp additional grip and it’s $20 cheaper.

      All great points! Need to look into that L bracket. Thanks for the watch!

      I sold my RP because I could not stand the awful skin tones. Sometimes they were ok but too often they would be deep orange or too magenta and I had to spend ages in post, still unable to fully correct them, even though I only shoot RAW. Have you found any improvement with the R8 sensor? Or no change?

    Thank you for this thorough and insightful review. I just sold my old R for $900 and purchased the R8 for $1299. This feels like a major upgrade. I shoot weddings and event with an R6 M2 and the OG R6. Actually use the R6 for most of my work with the 28-70mm. The R8 seems like an incredible value proposition as a second body.. I don’t like the battery size. Heck I started my journey shooting weddings with a RP. A single card slot and a pocket full of off band NC-17 batteries. The. M6M2 was my back up. Great content. I will be pairing the R8 with the 24 or 35mm as a second camera.

    I rented the R7 to try with a color run and it definitely feels and sounded less solid, but the images out of it were gorgeous. While I was there with you in Dallas, I have to say the R8 was pretty impressive and for events or going places that you don't want to bring your super expensive cameras, I think it definitely works great! The images you took looked amazing and are portfolios for working models so, you certainly justified the R8 being able to be used by professionals for professional purposes. On the streets where you have no idea who or what you'll run into i like the idea of having a lower cost camera that still does a great job!

    • @KevinDeal

      The low light performance and weight is making me think of leaving the R5 at home when I visit other cities to shoot models. The shots looked fantastic. Speaking of fantastic. Awesome video work! Wish I had a bad ass videographer with me on every shoot. Looks way more professional.

    I've owned an R8 for a month or so now and I wouldn't go back to anything else! The AF is truly incredible, I can shoot 40FPS completely silently, and it's compact enough to bring with me everywhere with the 28mm F2.8.
    The lack of a mechanical shutter I never really understood as a downside, unless you are taking photos of someone swinging a golf club it's a non-issue.
    I always struggled with people changing how they are acting as soon as I pulled a camera out and started taking pictures, but now that I can do that in a subtle way my photos have gotten even better! Sure you could always use electronic mode on a camera with a mechanical shutter, but that makes the camera even bigger. If you want that, buy an R6 II and not the R8!

    Changed my R10(with kit lens) to R8 with an RF 35mm f1.8. I absolutely love the change. I feared it will not a significant upgrade but i totally falled in love @ R8. I loved the R10, great picture quality @ daylight, but i wanted uncropped 4k/60fps video and better night pictures / videos. Exactly i got what i wanted. Anyone want to buy this i totally recommend, but with minimum +1 but i prefer +2 more LP-E17 accu for it, becouse thats this cameras weakest point, if you travel and shoot / video all day you will need 3 or maybe 4 LP-E17 totally, but i recommend this camera for travel becouse of it's size and its moderated price, it's little and great :)

    Great review Kevin. I shoot wedding photos. I replaced my RP with the R8. The R8 has the same body and uses the same battery as the old RP, so I went from a camera that I hated (RP) to one that I like as a second camera body to my R5.
    I will typically use my RF 28-70 on the R5 and put my longer lens on the R8, sometimes my wide lens for establishing shots. When the reception dancing photos start I’ll use my R8. The lower megapixels and better low light performance are perfect for dancing photos. They’re important but not mission critical so the single sd. card slot does not make fearful of not having a se ind card slot.

    There's a curtain that you can enable to drop to cover the sensor when you're changing lens. You just need to perform a "clean sensor now" and turn off the camera as soon as you hear it click.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  11 месяцев назад +1

      I tried that. It worked. Being that you have to time it correctly, is that a true function of the camera or are you simply turning it off while it's trying to do something else? It seems like the latter. I wonder if there are any consequences in doing so.
      Nonetheless, thank you for informing me about this. I learned something new today.

    I have the original Canon 5D, now around 19 years old! I was shocked to see that my collection of EF lenses will not fit on Canon's new RF mount cameras, but thanks to RF to EF converters, that's less of an issue. I simply can't afford to replace all my EF lenses with RF equivalents, so I will probably pull the trigger on the R8 now and get a converter. Thanks for the great review which has solidified my decision to get the R8 over the more expensive options that I really can't afford right now.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  5 месяцев назад +3

      Happy to help!
      You're going to LOVE the autofocus of the R8 jumping over from an original 5D!
      The older EF glass performs very well on the newer bodies converted, so nothing to worry about there. The RF glass is definitely better-looking than the EF glass, especially if you zoom in. But when you view images at the normal viewing distance, the differences are harder to tell. It's also even less noticeable on their lower megapixel cameras like the R8, so you're good to go. The main reason the differences are more noticeable on higher megapixel cameras like the R5 is because the EF glass was never designed or optimized to be used on higher megapixel cameras. So many EF lenses don't resolve as well on the higher megapixel cameras.
      Thanks for stopping by!

      I agree about the battery life. At least the batteries are tiny, not too expensive and fit in your pocket.
      To your question. Those are Stella Pro Reflex lights. They are fairly niche, in that you would only use them at dusk or at night. They are not as powerful as traditional strobes. The Canon EOS R8 is a huge step up for me since this is a major upgrade from an EOS T3i DSLR that I bought new in 2011. The R8 is a major step up for me since there are a lot more computerized settings vs. the T3i. Learning about all the menu settings and functions and getting them to work for me is still kind of a challenge. I shoot 90% photographs and hardly any video. The R8 may get me to experiment a little more with video.

    I recently moved to the R8 from a 5D Mark III which I'd used since 2012 (and other Canon film/digital SLRs dating back to the mid-90s). The change was prompted by the loss of my 24-70mm F2.8L lens (error 01) and a pet dog that moves so fast and erratically that the 5D's AF couldn't keep up. And wow, things have changed a bit. I always felt like I was the photographer in control of my gear, but now with this new camera, I feel like it's doing the driving and I'm just going along for the ride, ha ha ha. It's basically a computer with a lens attached now.
    For roughly the same money I spent on *just* the 5D III body back in 2012, I got the R8, 50mm 1.8, 24-50mm kit lens, and the RF 24-105mm F4L. Wow!

It could be useful for me in several ways, as I could keep in my car as a wildlife camera with the 800f11. I already have an r5 and an r7, so I probably won’t get this unless I can get it for a steal type price. Now, though, I feel better about recommending it to people who need an inexpensive body to get into photography with, and Canon did an excellent job with this as an entry level full frame body! Hi Kevin.
    Great review mate.
    I'm probably going to get one of these beauties in the next couple of weeks, along with the EF to R adapter.
    This will replace my trusty 6D that I have had for about 12 years.
    I particularly like the autofocus for portraits as I recently took some photos for my great niece for her prom and although they were generally good, I slightly missed focus on a couple of shots.
    That should be a thing of the past with this camera :)

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  6 месяцев назад +1

      As someone who used to own the 6D, I can tell you that you are going to need to pick your jaw up off the floor when you see how much easier the AF on the R8 will be for you. You basically let it track the eye while you pay attention to how to frame the shot. No need to check your focus. It nailed.

      The R8 is excellent for landscapes if you don't need to make large prints. The sensor is beautiful. But if you make really large prints, you may want to look into something with more megapixels, like the R5.

    Hi, I'm looking for advice, R8 vs X-T5. My main uses will be landscape and travel photography.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  10 месяцев назад +2

      Both cameras will do a fantastic job for landscapes, so no matter which you choose, you made a great choice. Both cameras are a great size for traveling.
      The advantages of the XT5 are that it has more megapixels. So if you intend to make large prints with or want to crop your landscape shots, the higher mega pixel count of the XT5 will allow you to do that more than the R8. The XT5 also has film simulations, which will give you inspiring looking colors right at the camera. If you don't like to spend a lot of time editing, Fuji is good for this. One thing to consider about the XT5 is that if you find yourself shooting in extremely low light (not necessarily an issue for landscapes but maybe while traveling) it is a crop sensor and one of the shortcomings of crops is that you run into noise a little sooner in poorly-lit environments.
      The advantage of the R8 is it has much superior autofocus. While that won't be a huge advantage when shooting landscapes, it will come in handy on vacation if you want to take a sudden shot of something that's moving or you're on a tourist bus and you see something suddenly pop up as you're passing by and your window to shoot it is fast, the R8 is a better camera for that. I find the button layout and comfort of holding the R8 to be better as well. The R8 also takes beautiful landscapes, and as long as you don't need to crop heavily or make enormous prints, it has enough megapixels to get you by. The R8 is an amazing camera in low light. Clean files, for sure. It's a full frame, which gives it an advantage over the Fuji in low light.
      At the end of the day, both cameras are excellent choices

    • @skyeplus
      @skyeplus 4 месяца назад

      @Janetepicsoprano The sensor is great, the camera is light. I have second thoughts, though. Fuji is still lighter, because of lighter lens. It's a question of if the camera light enough, so you're more likely put it in your bag. R8 is okay, you could use f24-105, or f50, but I still have second thought if I would be taking Fuji more often with me. The main use case - mountains, I think Fuji also covers it, even with crop sensor. But everything else - portraits, city photography - it can do just as good. Maybe it will lack at low-light city photography, but I don't have good lens for R8 for it either at this moment.
      So this is it.

    First of all I'd like to say very good through review of the camera. Thanks a lot! Secondly I'd like to ask your opinion on this camera. I'm a fairly long time Canon DSLR shooter (mostly 7D) and I'm about to switch over to mirrorless. Full frame isn't a must have but while I'm making a change I'd like to switch over to FF finally as well. I'm not a pro by all means but when I do something I'd like to do it as best as I can. I mostly shoot birds like seagulls which doesn't really count as wildlife in my opinion, outdoor sports like soccer, voleyball or tennis and a little bit of macro. With my new camera I'd like to take a serious step into portrait photography as well. The setup I have in mind, at least to start off, is Canon R8 with Canon 24-105L f4, 50mm f1.8 stm using the adaptor. What do you think of this setup? Autofocus is important and I'm a bit worries about using adapters.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  Год назад

      With the 24-105, I’m not sure it’s going to be long enough to shoot sports and seagulls. You may want to look at something longer. Now 105 might be long enough on a crop body. So like your 7D you could look into an R7. The R7 is basically the mirrorless replacement for the 7D. I did a three part before of the R7. Here’s the link to it, in case you’re interested. If that’s too much also check out my review of the R50.

      @@KevinDeal Thanks for the quick reply and suggestion. I will watch it for sure. To be honest I have been looking at the R7 for even longer than R8. I decided on R8 mainly because I want to get into portrait photography a bit more seriously and want a full frame. As for 105mm not being long enough let me just say I will be fine to start with and eventually I will be buying a 70-200 lens. I hope for f2.8 but it might be f4 to start with.
      One thing that worries me a bit is using an EF-R mount adaptor. I heard it slows down the autofocus considerebly on a few places. Do you have any experience with this?

      I own both. If you shoot sports and wildlife or you do lots of handheld video without a gimbal, the R7 is a better camera for those applications.

      If you're doing portrait photography only and you're using fast lenses, just get the R8. You likely don't need the IBIS. Afer that you're basically paying for a bunch of video features it sounds like you won't end up using.
      The R8 has better AF and an improved sensor. It's the same sensor as the R6 MK II.

    Is the no IBIS problem? Or i give it too much emphasis?

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  7 месяцев назад

      Depends on the situation. If you're shooting a fast lens with good light, it doesn't matter at all. Think about shooting portraits during the day.
      In poor light, you can still pair it with an image stabilized lens and it works fine.
      My personal opinion is that photographers freak out too much about IBIS. We have 100+ years of sharp pictures we've taken without IBIS. All of a sudden, it gets invented and photographers convince themselves they "need" it to create great work, when they've had that ability all along. It does help in some situations, but in general, an image stabilized lens can pick up a bunch of that slack, and often, you don't need IS or IBIS if you have good light.

      @@KevinDeal That makes sense, I see a bigger problem in one SD card slot and micro HDMI(With my old camera, I miss connecting to a large external monitor) I shoot mainly at concerts (I believe that a stabilized lens would be able to handle low light) and then products, especially watches and lifestyle/travel photo with watches. So I'm wondering if to save a little more for the r6 mkii or sony a7 iv, or if I'll make do with something like the R8 or even R7, Sony a6700. My decision flies back and forth :-D Thank you for you quick reply.

    Still contemplating the R7 or R8 for nature, natural history and general travel photography; I already have a R6 for portraits and studio photography. Any suggestions?

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  5 месяцев назад +1

      To be honest I’d rather use the R8 over your R6 for portraits because the skin tones have improved a little with the sensor (same sensor as the R6MKII) and the autofocus is better as well.
      Outside of getting you closer with a crop and dual card slots there aren’t a ton of features that make the R7 better than the R8. If you end up using darker lenses for wildlife the R8 files will be cleaner and require less noise reduction.
      At the end of the day they are both fantastic cameras but I prefer the results I get with the R8 more.

      I have never seen Canon retroactively add a feature like that before. It may also be a limitation of the processor. So, no, I cannot imagine them opening that menu in time. You will likely just have to buy a higher end camera to do that.

    What’s the big deal about full hdmi? Also would usb c be better. Now days all the phones and laptops are using that. I assume it’s the standard now. Unless file transfer isn’t as fast as hdmi.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  11 месяцев назад

      The big deal about not having a full sized HDMI port is that full-sized is more robust. Micro and Mini HDMI cables can rip out much easier. That USB port is attached to the mother board of the camera. So if you have any issues with the HDMI port breaking it's likely going to completely kill your camera to the point where a repair costs as much as a new camera.
      It's harder to bend a full sized HDMI connector, because they are larger and better protected.

The R8 files remind me of the R6 original and 1D Mk iii, hard to put my finger on it but all these sensors produced a certain look that i like so the R8 is may favourite camera at the moment and the fact that it has the R6 Mkii sensor is a big plus.

R10 looks like having a better grip handle which I wasn’t able to try at the time.
