Canon's October Surprise | New Lenses!
In this episode we talk about Canon's October drop of three new L lenses. The RF70-200 f/2.8 USM Z, the RF50mm f/1.4 VCM Z and the 24mm f/1.4 VCM Z. This is NOT a review. But we still know enough about these lenses to have a discussion about where these might fit in your Canon RF arsenal.

Should We Stop Calling The Fuji GF35-70mm A "Kit Lens"?

Should we stop calling the Fuji GF35-70mm a "Kit Lens"? Is it really fair to call any lens that is optimized to work with a 100MP camera a "Kit Lens"? I spent over two years with the Fuji GF35-70 and used it for both professional and personal work and came to the conclusion that many GFX owners could greatly benefit by adding this lens to the arsenal.....assuming the lens is on rebate. The Best Battery Charger For Canon & Sony
I'm just waiting for Sigma to finally release their 70-200 f/2.8 in the RF mount, which they already did for Sony E and L-mount. But that will probably be a year or two later.
It may never happen. At the moment, Sigma is only allowed to make APS-C lenses for the RF mount.
video is not what you get this camera for, good for you, for me its my best video camera, I actually like it more than my Ursa 12k
If the AF were a little better, it would actually be a pretty good video camera. At the end of the day, it's an amazing sensor, so video does look good through it.
Can you recommend lines for beginners , with adapter or without , less expensive , ?
I would need to know more about what you're trying to shoot.
@@KevinDeal Hey R50 walk around and anything that's beautiful and I can express , I also love boxing shows my family is involved as I was thanks for reply , means a lot !
@@TheFrank12111 For general walk around, perhaps a zoom. 24-105 maybe?
Just a beginner , best professional review ive seen for an R50 new to photography owner , thank you !
Thank you!
Is the sharpness wide open similar to the new Fuji 56mm 1.2?
It's somewhere between the sharpness of the original 56 1.2 and the new one.
Hey Kevin, thank you for the amazing video! The only thing I would advice is not to load the cameras on the ground, since at that level the wind is blowing all kinds of debris into the camera’s exposed internals. Try to sit somewhere and do that in your lap. Cheers!
You're right. I usually put more thought into things like that but when I am trying to record a You Tube video my brain sometimes gets distracted.
Hi, how does it connect on a GoPro? Specifically GoPro Hero 12
Go Pro makes adapters that have a 3.5mm inputs on them which then convert to the USB port of the Go Pro. In the case of the WEC Kit 2 you would simply plug the 3.5mm jack on the receiver into the Go Pro adapter.
@KevinDeal I see, thanks!
Can we use zoom mode with TCL ?
Yes, you can use the zoom / crop feature with the TCL attached.
Thank you Kevin for your great reviews , I just ordered a R8 with an adapter for my ef 300 L is/usm f4. Using it only for bird photography and Coming from a 50d, I really am excited what the results will be. Also ordered the extender 1.4 III For me battery life is not a big issue, just switch to a fresh one and that's it.
Enjoy it!
Geese are powerful ladies !
This is true
Could you compare the image quality of the GFX and the R5 Mark II? Are there any advantages for professional work, and do your clients notice the difference between these two cameras?
Different tools for different jobs. GFX is a better sensor. Especially in low light and color science. AF is trash. Canon wins there. Often times I can’t miss. So the Canon is the more consistent tool. I can edit files on Canon to look decently close to a GFX look. Clients can’t really tell the difference. I don’t buy gear for them. I buy it for myself - which is why I bought both.
I like this lens, I would not pay full retail price for it, but since it is an older model there are plenty on thr used market to be had!
Agreed.
A complete review, thanks , I just ordered mine :)
Congrats!
👍👍👍 EXCELLENT...THANKS
You’re welcome
I was wondering since you knew going in the GFX system that the sync speed was only 1/125 why you did not consider hasselblad X2D. That also has phase detect. Since I assume that was the reason you didnt want to buy the 50mp fuji/hasselblad versions (all contrast autofocus). Or was the X2D not out yet back then?
The 1/125 wasn’t a deal breaker. The Hasselblad cost more. So it was one compromise I made which wasn’t the end of the world.
Great video! Which lens would you purchase (hybrid professional) the RF28-70mm L f/2 or the RF24-105mm L f/2.8 if you were to buy now?
As a portrait photographer I’d still go with the 28-70. That extra stop helps a lot.
Aside from the aesthetics (yes I’m superficial, sue me🤣), the most important feature of the X100 series is definitely the leaf shutter and ND filter, combined with the internal flash, it’s a backlight killer. Try shooting with it at 1/2000 with the Sun behind your subject and you’ll take photos you never thought you could with internal flash. Obviously an external high powered flash with flash sync, soft box and reflector will do much better, but with a little work you'll be amazed what the internal flash can do. Not to further sound like a fan boy, but the X100VI is actually a good deal for the sum of its parts, i.e. weather sealing (with UV filter), IBIS, 23mmF2 lens, ND filter, internal flash with 1/2000 sync speed. Imagine getting all these extra equipment with the XT5 and you’ll end up with at least an additional $1000 + 1KG! Now the downside of course is the fixed lens (even with the underrated TCL and WCL it’s still limited in focal lengths). So I totally agree with you that this camera is not for everybody, and definitely need to know what you’re getting into before buying. So IMO it's not overhyped and the features are practical and useful, just not for everyone. All that being said, I’m still contemplating upgrading to the X100VI from the V (I upgraded from the X100T and F, as 16 to 24 mp was a big jump, and the lens of the F & V is day and night). But for me, the X100V is practically a stills camera and I have my XT5 with various zoom lenses for videos. The only value added feature for me is the 40mp which makes it easier to crop images another 30% when I couldn’t get close enough to the subject. The IBIS will help in videos I guess. Will see if I enjoy shooting with my XT5 and then decide. And in your other video, I also noted the F1.4 is much better than the F2, so a more useful comparison should be with the 23mm F2, and as I said, I wish Fuji would upgrade that lens to the X100V formula, which fixed the close focus issue.
It's a fun camera, for sure.
Thanks for the review You’ve convinced me to buy at as I love 35mm - as I’m not in a rush I’ll wait a few weeks in case there happens to be a holiday sale
Glad I could help. I'm hoping a lot of lenses go on sale. I need some more!
Fuji should update this one with WR and possibly LM. I can accept the IQ for its size. They should also update the 23mm with the lens formula of the X100V, because they already have the formula, shouldn’t be difficult IMO. I hope they do, so I don’t have to resort to only my 27mmF2.8.
I personally don't like the lens on the X100 series (I own the VI). When I did my review, I did a shoot out between that camera and an XH2 with the 23mm 1.4 and the 23 1.4 produced better images.
@ interesting. I’ll watch that video
@ I just watched and realize you were comparing to the 1.4. I have the old 1.4 and I can still see it is better than the X100V I own and rightfully so. So I can imagine your newer 1.4 be much better. So I’m a guy who prefers smaller bodies and lenses so if Fuji can update the 23mm F2 to the x100V lens to fix their infamous close focus problem, I’ll be more than satisfied. Secondly, I love my X100V but carrying 2 bodies during travel is cumbersome. So the next best thing for me is the 23mm F2. And in your X100VI video, the most important feature of that camera is definitely the leaf shutter and ND filter, combined with the in body flash, it’s a backlight killer. Try shooting with it at 1/2000 with the Sun behind your subject and you’ll take photos you never thought you could with internal flash. Obviously an external high powered flash with flash sync, soft box and reflector will do much better, but with a little work you'll be amazed what the internal flash can do. Anyway, Thanks for your videos, keep it up!
I love it!
Me too!
With this method, can you use the xpro ii trigger instead of the flashpoint R2 trigger?
Yes. You can do it with the Xpro II trigger.
What happened to the podcast? I find it, I binge it, and no more episodes 😢
It's going to be re-launched. We had to relocate to a new studio. Keep your eyes open. Should be up by the end of the year.
Does the XH2 have the same sensor/focusing as the XT5, XT50?
The XT5, yes. The XT50? I think so, but am not 100% sure.
@ your XH2 shots are amazing!
@@jb-el6xs thanks. Pretty sure you could take all the shots I took on any of those three cameras, so you should be good to go.

All your complaints would have just made the lens bigger and no longer a pancake lens. The 28mm fits in my jacket pocket with the R8. The 35mm is SIGNIFICANTLY bigger and absolutely does not. It's fine to prefer the 35 but if you want a pancake lens, you gotta get rid of features. I would NOT have bought the 28mm if it were bigger.
Yes. I also mentioned that in the video - the fact that compromises had to be made in order for it to be a pancake. There's only so much they can physically do.
Ive ordered the RF 50mm f1.4L VCM. Ive loved the EF 85mm f1.4L IS USM and I prefer the lighter weight of 1.4 lenses over the 1.2 versions. The commentators so far say the RF 50mm f1.4L VCM is very good optically with great bokeh and no focus breathing. The only thing I hope they do is provide firmware for the R6 MKII so we can use the iris ring in photo mode although it's not a deal breaker. Hope the next lens in this series they release is the RF 85mm f1.4L VCM that's the only lens to make up the lens I need and it's the next logical step for Canon.
I do wonder if I would have bought my 50 1.2 if the 1.4 existed at the same time.
Beat lens ever
It’s an awesome lens.
What are your thoughts on the announcement of the three new Canon L lenses? Are you going to buy any of them? Do they move the needle for you? Are you waiting on another lens to come out. Tell me in the comments below!
I love the current 70-200 2.8 as I can bring it around with just a small bag. I have (and love) the 35 F1.4 but I don't need 24 / 50mm at this stage as I like to keep my set up as simple as possible when I travel. Hopefully they will have a better ultra wide lens for astrophotography eventually :)
I do 80% photo and 20% video and now that I have the RF 135mm f/1.8L IS, I very rarely use my RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS for photo, but will use it for video. When the RF 70-200mm was first announced, I didn't think I wanted it, because of the telescopic barrel. I eventually got it, and although the image quality is good, the ergonomics are terrible! The throw on the zoom required more twisting of the zoom ring than my EF version of this lens. Even worse was the "control ring" of the lens sits close to the body instead of at the end of the lens like all my other RF lenses. The RF 70-200mm f/4L has better ergonomics (unsure about the Zoom throw) but it's f/4 and no tripod foot. This new version seems to be everything I want in a 70-200mm lens, except that I mainly use my 135mm instead. I would consider purchasing it, but have already pre-ordered a couple of R1 bodies, so I need to recover from that before moving on. I would likely get the white version, because I may eventually pick up the RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS and the clear visual distinction between the few will help prevent getting them mixed up (not only for myself, but for anyone helping me who might mistake two similar looking lenses). For the other lenses just announced, I already have the RF 50mm f/1.2L which I don't want to replace, and the RF 24mm f/1.8L IS macro, which I don't need to replace. The new RF 35mm f/1.4L is a good lens, although I hoped for an f/1.2 version, which may still be possible. The 'distortion' of the RF 35mm f/1.4L does not bother me at all. I would love to see Canon make a 50-135mm f/2L lens and would happily pair that with my 28-70mm f/2L.
@@JaredRibic You sound like my clone. I have the exact same opinions as you do about the 70-200. I didn't like it. The new one looks WAY more appealing, but as I talked about in my video, the 135 always gets the job done for me, so why spend $3000? I just bought an R5MKII and the RF35mm f/1.4 recently, so like you are with your R1's, I am also recovering. Lol I agree going with white, especially if you get the 24-105 2.8. That way in darkness you know which lens is which when pulling it out of your bag. I don't own a dedicated 24mm yet, so the 1.4 definitely appeals to me, And like you, the theoretical lens that would make the most sense to me would be a 70-135 f2. I'd even compromise for a 70-135 f2 or f1.8.
@@GP996_LB I would like to see a 14mm
@@KevinDeal - I'll probably pick up this new "Z" version of the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS eventually, only to replace my older EF 70-200mm which gets used for video. But what I have right now gets the job done, and I do more photo than video so it's not on the top of my list. I have most everything I "need" for lenses, so the only lenses on my "want" list would be the 24-105mm f/2.8L IS, 100-300mm f/2.8L IS (can't believe the LENS HOOD for this thing is $550), and if Canon ever does make a 35mm f/1.2L that would be worth checking out. I mostly shoot weddings, but also shoot fashion/runway, where I used the 70-200mm /2.8L for years. Lately I'm shooting runway with primes and I'm loving it (especially when lighting isn't the best). Right now I'm flying to a runway which I'll shoot tomorrow, most likely with the 85mm f/1.2L. Didn't even bother to pack the 70-200mm. Would love a 50-150mm f/2L for runway, and weddings as well. But the 135mm f/1.8L IS has been awesome. Two more weeks before the R1 bodies arrive! Can't wait! I went from the R5 bodies to R3 bodies and didn't miss the resolution. I was hoping the R1 would be 30MP but I'm actually fine with "only" 24MP.
Can you dry cannabis in this?
Not going to lie. Not my area of expertise. But I would imagine a de-humidifier will dry out just about anything you put in it.
Is it possible to share some RAW files? I have been inspecting this lens for more than a month and i haven't come to a conclusion yet. I am between this one and EF 24-70 F2.8 II. I need IS and sharpness. Extra length is also bonus but according to JPG images taken with this lens did not satisfy me so much. I need to see photos taken with R5.
Fashion photographers use this lens in studio and magazines use the images. I'm not sure what your standards are for this lens but it's good enough for professional work. The lens is acceptably sharp. If you want the sharpest, you need to spend $3000 on the 2.8 version. The EF24-70 doesn't have IS. Since you said "I need IS and sharpness" there's no reason for you to consider that lens.
@@KevinDeal I mostly use my EF 70-200 F2.8 II and 100 mm L lens for portrait or product shots but when i go outside i borrow 24-70 F2.8 II. Its sharpness is good but i want to buy a lens for me for outdoor shots. I looked at many many photos of this 24-105 on many bodies except R5. I found some shots on dpreview but all files are corrupt and i couldn't open.
I love the X-H2 but for fast moving genres like motor racing or planes it’s not the best. I love it and the X-T5 for travel it’s light and I can afford so many different lenses. For Studio I agree it’s a bit flaky. I was a Canon 5D mkIV user and some things like tethered shooting were easier with Canon. I like Acros for B&W shooting but not sure I am making enough of the other film simulations.
I like Classic Chrome. It's a favorite for sure.
This is exactly the video I needed right now - thank you.
So glad! You're welcome

From my experience, everything you say is true. Fuji might have a corporate culture that does not allow change to take place efficiently enough. The issues you stated are very apparent.
Yeah. Fuji fanboys like to argue with me about these issues, but I'd rather hold companies accountable and pressure them to be better.
I have been using the r5 II for portraits and wildlife for about a month. Coming from R8 which already has amazing AF, I did not expect the improvement to be so much. After setting up TBBF for wildlife it's almost like changing into easy mode. I am able to focus more on looking for interesting shots and species. As for portraits / fashion, my work flow is also a bit faster now - I use the eye focus to toggle between models / details of the dresses they were wearing. I think a good AF allow us to focus on other stuff like composition and improve on workflow, but I do enjoy using MF occasionally when I am just shooting for fun :)
Completely agree.
I recently got my GFX 100s + GF 63mm f/2.8. I find it versatile, image quality is up to my expectation, autofocus is good enough, and the whole camera can fit in my 1990s old camera bag that my Dad gave me. I also find the external autofocusing really cute. I enjoy the system every minute.
It’s a rock solid system.

After years of domestic and International travel photography, in 2015 it made sense to stay home and take photos and make videos of my beautiful Macaw family. I primarily use these to educate others on how to create a successful Macaw aviculture protocol, on Facebook and other formats. After using a Canon 1Dx Mark II since 2016 and seeing no need to ever upgrade to a mirrorless Canon system, I watched a YT video on the Canon R3 used for bird photography. After renting an R3, and using the amazing eye tracking autofocus, buying an R3 was truly a game changer.. My lens of choice for both photos and videos for Macaw photography has been the EF 24-70, EF 11-24, and EF 15mm fisheye lens. For my needs these are the only lenses required to create my favorite photographic and video demonstrations of my avian family. Now it is time to rent the equivalent RF lenses to see which of these will duplicate my EF lens collection. After using the EF adapter for the R3, there have been some issues, so it makes sense to keep the EF system and use them on the I Dx Mark II, and purchase the RF lenses for the R3. Any suggestions would on RF lens selection would be greatly appreciated! great video, thanks for sharing your experience Kevin!
Wow what a great overview. Thanks, man. I was a Canon full frame shooter 10 years ago and recently I picked up a Nikon D800 full frame DSLR. Both are great, but I'm convinced now to go APS-C for the size/weight. As far as the criticism of APS-C, I thought the main one was about pixel count. My D800 was released in 2012 and it boasted a 36 megapixel sensor. On my computer, I zoom into a JPEG several clicks and the sharpness doesn't go away! But that's no a deal breaker for me in terms of switching to APS-C.. However, I'm guessing Fujifilm can't compete with Canon and Sony for video shooting, huh? That might be a problem for me.
Canon and Sony are superior with video. But Fuji is still decent.
This lens is for me if you need to know 🤩💕..but it's two times the price of my R8 😭💔. I want it so bad....🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼😊
It works like a champ on the R8
It's called IBIS you moron. you can handhold at 1/4 of a second and get a sharp image. Try it fool.
14:10 I saw you using the aperture ring that you don't care to have. Caught in the act! Haha.
Can't do a proper lens review without testing all aspects of it.
Absolute best it’s not.
How do you like to set yours up?
Always enjoy your videos yeah this lens is an interesting one isn't it? I love it for the size. I don't own it but it does feel appealing but now that I have the 55 1.7 there's no reason for me to own this lens but I do think for people that don't have a 50 mm lens for their GFX. I think this is a great consideration especially making the footprint of the camera a lot smaller as well. I think that's a really good reason to buy this lens.
I think if you have proper space and don't need to shoot it in low light handheld, it's a fantastic solution. But the 45 is just a more compatible focal length with how I shoot. Thanks for the support!
@@KevinDeal yeah I agree after having my 55 1.7 and I took it out for some night photos oh my gosh it's such a game changer
Great, detailed review - thank you! 🙏 good to know re low light
Glad it was helpful!
With those cameras showing up on the used market with regularity at an affordable price, it has me thinking. What a great way to get into medium format.
You can get a 100S or a 50 for cheap on the second hand market right now. Great time to get into it. The difference between a 100S and 100SII sensor is marginal at best. The price difference though....huge. It's why I haven't upgraded my 100S. I would basically be spending $3000 more for better AF and one more film simulation. Not a good value for me.
The 50 and 110 are my only lenses on GFX so size for performance the 50 is great. Agree with the shortcomings though. Overall I think it is an often overlooked lens but worth a try for those looking for a lighter general lens.
I like the 55. Not practical for a walk round unfortunately
@@KevinDealjust realized my typo, I meant the 50mm 😄
@@benard702 Ok. That context makes sense. Yeah. the 50 is a great value for the money. It resolves well.
I have both the 45 and the 50, and use them on my 100 ii. The 45 is clearly sharper and faster, but significantly larger. For street use, I typically prefer the 50 for size/weight convenience, but the 45 is really great overall.
I don’t really notice the weight difference. It’s mathematically there. But I guess I just don’t notice it that much.
Got the 50 on the GFX50R and expected to have to replace it when something better became available (like the 55/1.7 recently). Instead, I am happy with the performance and AF is pretty fast for GFX. So I'm still using it, next to a 30 and 110. Wide open, the sharpness is not as good as the other two but (the only thing that matters) plenty good enough. Can 100% recommend 🙂
50 is an excellent choice to pair up with the 30 and 110.
I have a copy of the lens that I use with a GFX 50S II. I think it's fine as a daily use lens, if you like the focal length. I consider it to be the GFX alternative to the XF 27mm for X series. For general photography, I tend to prefer the longer focal length of the GF 63mm, and I find the GF 45mm to be too wide for my style. The GF 50mm is a good choice, for me, when I want the lightest solution.
I love the 63mm. Excellent lens
