This was BY FAR the most detailed and BEST comparison between 2 cameras I've ever seen as it didn't just list specs side by side, but also gave examples of the performance. You ROCK!
This is an excellent and highly professional review and as an owner of both I'd back what Mathieu is saying. I would add that anyone thinking of getting on of these two could do worse than see what Duade Paton has said on this subject and he's said enough that Canon even got in touch with him. From Day 1 Canon told us/sold us that the r7 had the 'same AF as the r3' and this is simply untrue. The r7 AF jumps around and for no reason either, the R8 is a LOT better in this regard, I've run them side by side and can vouch for it. Look up the sensor read out speeds for both and that says a lot as well. Thanks 👍
To be fair, Canon never said that the autofocus in the R7 was the same as the R3. They said it was "based on" the R3. The R7 autofocus is actually quite good, EXCEPT it tends to wander a bit if you hold your finger on the button when photographing a stationary subject.
Excellent comparison. I have R7+RF 100-500mm and R6mkII+RF 800mm f/11. I mostly use the R7 combo. I shoot mostly birds. The R6mkII is outstanding in low light. Note: The R8 has the same sensor and AF as the R6mkII
Even though I am not in the market to replace my R7, I love your reviews and never fail to be enlightened. I especially appreciate your rigour, thoroughness, and attention to quantitative detail. I can barely imagine the effort required, which is much appreciated.
For weddings and social events, wich one would i choose? the size of the R8 is a problem when you put in a big lens? The mount of the camera is so stressed? Thank You!
Hey I hope you are doing well, I am totally new to photography but I was just using my phone. I love landscape, animals and all other nature photography and I like to make zoomed 4k 60fps videos of animals. After a lot of research I finalized R7 and R8 for my budget and as my first camera. As a beginner to a professional before spending money I just want to ask you what will be the best camera for me to do all that I mentioned above.
I have R7 and one important thing for photo is - before I used mechanical shutter, but the shutter shock was that gave me problems with blur in images. I started using first curtain and it's so much better, Im getting a lot more sharp images. The most important thing is shoot with a bit higher shutter like 1/100 AND first curtain and you will get great results.
I had the same experience, but there really is no downside to the first curtain electronic shutter, which I now use preferentially. If rolling shutter is not an issue, the electronic shutter offers up to 30 fps with silent mode, which I still find useful.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons The R8.. I capture very little video. And often capture birds in flight. The low noise+image quality of full-frame(R8) & IBIS + crop sensor benefits(R7) had me in 2 minds. Finally, I didn't like the yellow tint of the R7. Don't think Other reviewers on RUclips covered that...
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons I'm a hobbyist looking for an upgrade over my 8yr old Canon Rebel T6i(APSC) that i paired with an old sigma 70-200mm, f2.8 for crop sensors. Not the ideal kit for bird photography, it takes some effort to capture anything meaningful. Got a load of EF-S lenses - started out with 10-18mm,18-50mm,50-250mm, then a 40mm canon prime and then the Sigma. Makes the choice tough between R7 & R8. The R8 will mean I cannot use any of these lenses but for the prime... The R7's occasional focussing issues makes it unreliable for bird photography don't you think ?
Awsome review!!! But i have a question for you, which one is the better combo for travel and sport photography the sony a7iv with the tamron 70-180 or the canon r6 with the EF 70-200 is ii (adapted)? Which one is better for fast action autofocus ?
Good question, but I'm not sure I can give you a precise answer because I never tested the Tamron 70-180, so I don't know how fast the AF motor is on that lens. I know that the EF 70-200mm with the adapter works very well on EOS R cameras, so it should be fast on the R6 too.
Great video, I think this will finalize many people's decision on which to go with. I do have one question... have encountered any overheating with R8 while in stills mode? I see a lot of videos and reddit posts about people just navigating through the menu or setting up the camera and it goes into overheat mode. Keep up the great job. Enjoying the thorough reviews.
Yes, I forgot to mention this in this video but I talked about it in my previous one (R6 vs R8). I've seen the overheat indicator appearing while working in photo mode, but it never increased beyond two bars, so the camera never shut down because of overheathing while taking still pictures. But it is also true that I don't live in the warmest of countries.
I live in Singapore and the ONLY time i saw the heat indicator is after spending a good 30min near non stop doing high speed panning shots of toucans and parrots flying around in bird park.
I've been debating between these two cameras for weeks now and this is the best, most helpful video I've found, thank you so much!! Your comparisons helped me finally settle on the R8, as I especially love theater & concert photography and portraits, so the better focus and low-light performance on the R8 far outweigh some of its weaknesses compared to the R7 for me personally. This is the comparison I have been looking for. I am more interested to know which focusing system is better. I have been really thinking of getting the R7 to replace my 7D but I guess i will be getting the R8. Thank you.
What I find interesting is that word spreads around the world that the R7 is for wildlife and the focus on tracking loses to the R8. Another point is this Ibis, so far I see more marketing than real utility, the R8 without Ibis seems almost identical to me. The R7 for me from the videos I watched is a 90D in disguise that little by little we will discover its true identity. I read many complaints about the mechanical shutter, one said that out of every 10 photos only 1 had focus and with luck! For me, the essential thing in a camera is the focus, 300 photos per second is no use, a battery that lasts 300 hours, 10 card slots if 99% of the photos in motion do not have focus, especially a camera that is said to be for wildlife. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for watching! I think the R7 has a lot of potential, and in some situations like small birds on branches etc, it performs really well. To be honest, I'm still surprised it doesn't match the other EOS R cameras with faster action like birds in flight, all the other ones I've tested behave in the same extact way. Perhaps it's just not as powerful as the other models when it comes to AF calculations/s, or something like that.
Whoever claimed a 10% focus rate should schedule a service check. I use my R7 every day, and this has not been my experience. With the mechanical shutter, shutter shock may be an issue, due to the lightness of the body. But the first curtain electronic and electronic shutters avoid even this slight loss of sharpness. And even if you prefer the mechanical shutter, a 10% keeper rate strikes me as likely hyperbole. I use my R7 almost exclusively for birds and wildlife, with the RF100-500 living on the camera 95% of the time. And I can say that I've never had so much fun with a camera. The image quality from this combination is simply stunning.
Hi Mathieu, I was wondering if you have done any side by side comparison with R6M2 vs R8? I know they share the same sensor and all but it would be interesting to see if they have the EXACT same color output. I know Canon sometimes tweak their filters depending on which market the model is aimed at. Thanks.
Hello! I am a little late for the party, but i would like to know your input. I am looking to get a camera to start me up on photography. My objective would be to mostly document my travels, so landscapes and maybe pictures of me and my partner in those places by using a tripod. I would also be using it to take pictures of animals, mostly house animals, like cats, dogs and bunnies. I have very little knowledge on cameras and photography. I really want to start studying and get into it a bit more. So I am split between these two. They are very similar in price, but the R7 looks like, the more newbie friendly with its IBIS, but on the other hand the R8 seems to have the most potential and picture quality? Which one do you think it would be better for someone new? Thank you !
Thanks for asking! To be honest, both are great to start with, but the R7 has some practical advantages, like backing up your shots on the second card while you're travelling, and the better battery life which means you don't need to bring too many spares with you. For what you intend to do, the R7 will cover your needs just fine, plenty of quality for landscapes, and you can get a kit with the 18-150mm which will allow you to do a bit of verything. Then you may want to invest on fast prime lens later on to have better bokeh when taking portraits, or if you find yourself working in low light more.
It depends on your budget really. There are some Canon RF prime lenses that are not too expensive, like the RF 35mm F1.8, the 50mm 1.8, the 85mm F2. It depends what you want to do as well. Is it for portraits, landscape, etc.
I haven't tested the A6700 so can't comment on that one yet. I would say the Sony has a few advantages like 4K 120p (if you're into slow motion) and there is more choice when it comes to lenses for the E-Mount. The battery life should be better too.
Very detailed comparision innocently pointing to the fact , not to buy R7 😞 . After this will Cannon probably release new firmware for R7 in order to enhance its reputation 🙂
Excellent video and the most comprehensive comparison of R7 vs R8 i've seen. Did the AF comparison use EFCS in both cameras? After owning the R7 for a year i can verify indeed that AF performance for stills in mechanical shutter is lower than R6 and off course also lower than R5 (meaning, when comparing side by side this is immediately noticeable). Though R7 was initially sold as an upgrade for 7D owners (fast stills shooting, wild life, etc), seems like it is a video beast rather than stills. R8 also seems like an excellent option for videographers (both non-professional and professional with an external recorder). Overall after years of disappointments, canon is being competitive and releasing very interesting products.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Canon EOS R8 Mirrorless Camera + RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens €1899. Will this fulfil my bokeh needs and normal photography. Or still i need to buy more lenses? My budget is €2000.
The RF 24-50mm won't give you a lot in terms of bokeh. You'll want to invest in a fast prime lens at some point, like what the one @jonashovden suggested, which is one of the cheapest.
Currently have the R7 but I'm looking to upgrade for better iso performance. That battery difference is a dealbreaker. I have nearly 10 LP-E6/LP-E6N/LP-E6NH batteries from past cameras, many of them being the original canon part. I'm not willing to replace them all at $60 ea, so I'm thinking the R6 (only 20MP?), or more ideally the R5 (higher megapixel) would be the better direction to go. Why would they switch to a 1040mAh point-n-shoot battery in a full-frame camera? Just so they could fit a SD slot next to it?
No, most likley because the body is smaller and it's roughly the same of the previous EOS RP camera, so fitting a larger battery would have force Canon to update the design somehow.
Great job as usual! If only Canon could release firmware updates… I guess they could improve af or ibis response on the R7… if the really wanted to of course. Ciao
Thank you. They have done well with firmware updates on cameras like the original R6, so I'm sure they can bring some improvements to the R7 if they want to.
Thank you Mathieu, i plan to buy an R8 for my partner for vlogging. hahaha. i think thats the one and only camera i will buy for my partner, and im gonna send my partner to course to learn how to use the camera. hahahahaha
I have a M50 MKII and looking for a replacement R7 or R8, I am taking pictures of ballroom dancing competitions and struggle with noise since venues tend to be too dark. For example with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 with a Metabones Speedbooster it is f2.0 1/250sec and ISO gets to 12800. Will the R7 make enough difference in noise? I think about getting the R7 due to IBIS, dual SD card, battery capacity and with ASPC + Speedbooster I can go to f2.0 and with an R8 that is not possible.

Bokeh will mainly depend on the lens used, but you'll have more chances to get a shallower depth of field on the R8, because of the larger sensor.
RF 50/1.8@@arunkumar-xc3ms
For indoors low light, I would choose the R8 for about the same price.
Since when R8 is more expensive then R7?
There are no wide angle lenses for the R7!
RF 10-20mm F4L IS STM
RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM
RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
RF 16mm F2.8
RF-S 10-18MM F4.5-6.3 IS STM
+ some third party options
Even when you apply the 1.6x crop factor, they still work as wide angle lenses.
Hopefully more will come.
Are your photos of natural animals? it looked like there was a wire reflection in the owl's eye. it would get you more respect to take photos of wild animals
All my wildlife pictures are taken in nature reserves. In this particular video, I also added a few taken at an owl farm because I happened to go there with my son and I wanted to add a couple of extra images to the video.
