      outstanding comparison.... I have been a dedicated panasonic user for many years BUT panasonic have kept their heads in the sand for far too long and they have paid a high price. I am absolutely furious with panasonic for taking so long to pull their heads out of the sand when it comes to focus tracking. they are not quite there yet so i'm holding off for further improvements before I make a purchase. zen billings in canada

    Ive owned both and I prefer the S5II. It's quite superior in both video (can shoot 6K open gate) and stabilization is much better than Sony. The S5II was already a great deal but at its holiday sale price right now of $1,700 it's easily the best value on the market. Especially when you can bundle a lens with it for not much more money. I just picked one up and love it so far.

    Very grateful for this comparison Mathieu and the S5II seems to have fairly capable PDAF which very impressive for Pana's first attempt. I'm really surprised how well it did in BIF especially after the tests you did of the person walking towards and away from the camera for photos (where it still did quite decently well, and was ok in lowlight). Great job! I think since the Panasonic is the newest one on the market, that Panasonic has the opportunity to address issues that can be addressed in software via firmware updates. Make the auto focus on par with the SONY 100%, fix that LCD zoom-in feature and sharpen it up a bit...... and more things as they get customer feedback. At the same time SONY has the opportunity to improve their IBIS and who knows what else with an "A7V" which is probably due before to long.

    About catalyst browse, it doesn't reduce sharpness, but all of the softness comes from motion blur, because you have to turn all stabilization off. So it is similar to programs like gyroflow, where you need to stabilize the camera on a gimbal or a rig to avoid jitters before applying the digital stabilization.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Год назад +1

      I remember comparing Catalyst to the digital stabilization tool in Final Cut Pro and there was no loss of sharpness with FCPX.

    • @Wildridefilms
      @Wildridefilms Год назад +1

      @@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons can you try putting footage shot on a tripod through catalyst and see if it softens it up?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Год назад +1

      I tried now with the shot I used for my sharpness test. Same result: with Catalyst, the footage is soft compared to the original. I've prioritised image quality, tried different crop amount, tried different codecs for the output, same thing. Catalyst Browse doesn't offer a lot of settings to play with, but when I tested the trial of Catalyst Prepare a while back, I got the same result once again.
      To be honest, the only reason I included Catalyst in my video here is to show that what you can get with Sony in post, you get it with Panasonic in camera (they're not exactly the same, but they are close). I actually find Catalyst really good and better than most digital stabilisation on editing softwares, it's just a shame to loose details like that. Not sure what's going on. I even tried different shutter speeds in a previous test.

    • @Wildridefilms
      @Wildridefilms Год назад +3

      @@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons That's a bummer. But also, catalyst is not great at low light where you can't crank the shutter speed, without getting a ton of noise. A good traditional stabilization system will run laps around it in low light.
      Sony being the biggest camera company, somehow have the worst stabilization, both in body and lens.

    For me there is no such thing as the perfect lens or camera or anything else. In the day when you could work on cars I did basic maintenance and I could not do so with a half inch socket or open end wrench. I was at a wedding that took place in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, I brought a Fujifilm XT5 with a few primes, a 13& 75mm Viltrox, a 23 & 16mm Fujifilm and 33mm Tokina, all fit in a Think Tank vision 13 bag. It may seem like a lot to pack, but many of the lens are not that large and this was my first time in the Finger Lakes so I wanted to photograph a wide variety of subjects. I found myself using the Viltrox 13 & 75mm lens the most.

    Was thinking about getting the A7 IV + the Sony 200-600mm zoom lens to replace my Fuji X-H2, but the burst speed just isn't really up to today's standards, especially when shooting action. Ended up buying a Z8 and pre-ordering the Nikkor 180-600 instead, which I hope you'll be testing at some point.. 😁

    Very good comparison. I like the way the Panasonic can zoom in for focusing in a small overlay window instead of full screen. I use manual focus lenses so focus aids are important. However, if that zoom is not sharp it's a big minus point. Even on the 12 megapixel A7sii that zooming is sharp. The Panasonic S1 has a very high quality EVF and since I only use manual focus lenses that could be helpful but if the zoom is fuzzy it defeats this benefit.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

    I suspect the Sony A7iv to use contrast to fine tune focusing. That is because when shooting runners , the global hit rate is very low, but it's about zero when it comes to blondes with blond eyebrows and light eyes. Even though the face is detected with the green box in the EVF , actual focus is off. It works much better with very light skin with dark eyebrows , thin-rimmed glasses , wrinkled faces .

    For video autofocus, how big would you say the difference is between the Panasonic S5ii and Sony in real-world scenarios? I film weddings and occasionally nature/sports with a lot of unpredictable movement, so I need reliable AF. Which video AF system would you say is overall better and for what reason?
    For context, I'm deciding between the S5ii and the Sony A7siii. I like the S5ii more as an overall camera, but curious if the AF difference is big enough to sway me to Sony.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  Год назад

      I never tested the A7Siii unfortunately, so can’t comment directly on that one, but I would expect it to perform on the same level as other Sony models such as the A7iv.
      In general, I find the S5ii to do well if you stick with the single AF point.
      For video specifically, face/eye detection works fine, at least with a person walking, or simply filming yourself in front of the camera. I can’t confirm how good it could be in a more busy environment such as in a wedding venue. The face/eye detection could be more erratic.
      Overall, the main difference is that Sony has better Eye AF and Tracking, whereas with the Lumix there are many moments where you need to disable subject detection, and just work with a single point that you move manually. The tracking mode on the Panasonic is also unreliable, wether it’s photo or video.

      I use the A7 IV with FE 20mm F1.8 in APS-C mode. The reason behind this particular setup is that I use a small Teleprompter (the Parrot) which mounts on the lens directly, but doesn't work well with my 24-70mm F2.8 unless I zoom in past 35mm (but the frame becomes too narrow). The 20mm gives me the perfect field of view in APS-C mode and works well with the Teleprompter. Previously I also used the FE 35mm F1.8, then the FE 35mm 1.4 GM, but I prefer a wider view than 35mm, and the G Master lens is not great with AF for video (lots of breathing back and forth).

    IMO, these cameras cannot be properly compared. The Panasonic is a video first oriented camera, the A7iv is more photo oriented. I've owned both, and while the A7iv is good, as a video shooter, I far prefer the Lumix.
    Video only the Panasonic looks more cinematic, and image quality is more filmic, while on the Sony video looks more like video--over-sharpened. The filmic look is prized in mirrorless cameras because of the softness of film image.
    Plus, the Sony colors remain problematic, being unnatural and even strange. I prefer the more naturalistic colors from Panasonic. Plus, I also find Panasonic V-log to be one of the best and easiest to grade logs ever.
    By comparison, the Sony looks to me like a one-trick-pony, with its great AF. But what good is it when the stabilization looks so bad?!?
    Finally, the video exposure assist features and waveform should not be ignored.These are great features for video shooting. C4k is also wonderful for cinematic shooting.

      It also depends what you want to do with the camera, if you're more into video, or wildlife, or sports etc...

    never use ! the catalyst brows, It ruins your footage! and frocve them in to 8 bit, with teh banding issues that comes ! C. Brows is a useless toolk it also softens your footages conciderably !

      I can export in 10-bit on mine. To me the most annoying thing is the loss of sharpness.

      @@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons If you hear what
      Jacques Crafford, clever guy, says about this. He claims its a only a "wrapper", and I can also say I have seen dthis. I actually made movie( land for sale) I ruined some shots after getting to know all about this. I started a case against SONY fro it too ! The wrapper file will show 190 bit, but its not ! If you itest this on filmeing som hig light skies, and compare, you will se that you get 8 bit banding, after Calayst. STop !! useing this softeware, its a footage killer .

      that's what i knew also. i mean the fact that you get 8bit with catalyst (from the original 10bit), so i guess its not ok if you grade it afterwards. also, the shutterspeed limitation is not ok.. u barely ever can film 50 shutterspeed, from what i understand it's generally advised to be at at least 200-250.. a no-no for "cinematic".

    20:25 jeez wasn't expecting Sony to look that bad on skintones, looks greenish/yellowish. Panasonic altough has more magenta, to me it looks more natural, i understand this is video and maybe by shootiing log you can make the sony look better. I'm mainly a photographer and from time to time do use video as well, i have an a7iii and was thinking to upgrade to a7iv or a7rv, but by the looks of it, a7iv still doesn't look amazing, so i wonder how a7rv looks with it's AI chip and claimimg better colours with it's improved AWB algorithm.

      The skin tone test are SOOC JPGs, but the color palette is the same for video, although as you said you can record with S-Log, Cinetone is also interesting. The test was taken with manual white balance.
