Simon, this was a great review of the camera. Most "haters" will mention the lack of IBIS, short battery life etc. and they just want the best for the lowest price possible. We all know this is not the case. This is a good upgrade from a cropped sensor camera like I am thinking now. For non professional photographers I see this camera as an excellent option.

Great video ! 3 things make me consider the R6 Mk2: I have some older EF lenses without stabilisation (200mm f/2.8L), so IBIS is much appreciated. Also I like that on the R6 Mk2 the sensor is protected when the camera is turned off. And last: the 12 fps mechanical shutter ...
I've been hesitant to buy this camera because of some of the reduced or lacking features. I'm glad that you mentioned that the EVF isn't significantly worse than the more expensive Canons.

I was really excited to pick up the R8, as it was just affordable for me, yet boasts some fantastic specs. On my first day out testing it I was really impressed at how much of a quality improvement it is over my current EOS R. I've been tempted by other models in a similar price range, but the R8 always proves to be the best bang for my buck in its category. Thanks for the great review, super practical and down to earth.

I'm hoping more generalist photographers will find your enjoyable and helpful reviews. I take probably one bird photo every 3-5 years. I'm 81, 56 years a pro photographer and find lots of value here. The problem with Canon used to be that they crippled their low-end cameras; now it's an embarrassment of riches! I could use them all; thankfully the R6 covers the bases beautifully.
I have the R5 and the R7 along with the original Canon EOS R....I like them all I do think that each one has its own purpose and personality if that makes sense lol I mainly shoot the Canon R for landscape and for wildlife I shoot the R5 My wife however has taken over the r7 and absolutely loves that camera.
Love your very informative and positive attitude towards the R8. It was a great 5Diii replacement for me, wanting to have a significantly lighter body but still full-frame.
Nice one I was tempted to upgrade my r6 to the r6 mk2 but instead I’m now tempted to just get the r8 as an additional body maybe pair it with the rf800 f11
Hi Simon - thanks for another very great video. I have bought the R8 as a travel camera in addition to my R5 and I love it. Regarding the battery indicator I have seen so many reviews saying "I didn't even used a single tick". The reason is that three ticks (maximum) means sufficient battery, two ticks means low battery. Really hope Canon will change this - how it is now is misleading, and probably to cover for the 'small' battery. There is no reason for this as the battery is 'okay', but, Canon, please let us know what is left on the battery as 100/75/50/25 that most other camera's.
Very helpful - I am in the market to upgrade from the Canon M50 to an entry-level full-frame - between the EOS RP or R8 - and think your review has sold me on the latter. Thanks!
I'm loving the R8.. I picked up photography back when the EOS Rebel xt was new and started down the path.. family tragedy hit and I walked away a few short years later.. Just recently due to a couple of friends, as well as a few photographers from the east coast I follow,,, My interest was re-ignited, so I pre-ordered and received the R8.. I'm loving this thing especially beside the Mini 3 pro drone I have.. I wasn't about to put out the money for the R6MII or anything similar, not knowing if I will stick with photography in general,, or which direction in photography I will gravitate toward.. I've taken it a few times now out to the coast for a beach cleanup under not so favorable weather,, as well as a birthday party with all sorts of colors and movement,, and I gotta say I'm extremely happy so far with my choice.. I can only hope to outlearn and outgrow this camera,, for me it's an awesome buy.
I have never in my 62 years owned a single Cannon camera. No specific reason other than my first being Pentax and then moved to Nikon Digital. I don't have a negative reason for no Cannon, just never purchased one. I would like to give the new OM1 a try. Thanks for sharing
Excellent review, very thorough and intelligent. I think this will fit my needs. The problem of the hiker/photographer-manage pack weight and camera features/quality. The light R8 may fit the bill nicely.
Great balanced and practical camera review, Simon - just like your wildlife technique videos. You’re the best. Enjoy your safari. Looking forward to seeing your photos from that excursion.
I like this channel a lot, although I’m in different camp. And I’m not in wildlife phitogtaphy. Neverthrless, this is one of the most educative channel for photography overall. It never becomes boring.
I remember going out with two rolls of Kodak Ektachrome and waiting almost a week for the results, setting up the projector, It was a great time, wondering how things were going to turn out.........Photography was sure different those days, love the videos.
Hi Simon, I’ve been taking photographing birds for a few years. I want to upgrade my m50(used with a sigma 100-400mm). I tried using a fujifilm xs20 ( which we had at home) with the same sigma lense and an adaptor. It’s just to heavy for me to carry around . I am doubting about the canon r7 or r8 with the 400mm. I am leaning towards the r7 but I am doubting about low light performance and noise as well as the background. What do you think? Must I accept to drag a 600mm to get good shots with an r7 or r8? Should i get a more expensive body/ lense? Wait for the new models?
The R7 is a great camera, but for wildlife lenses are king and the Sigma 100-400 isn’t the best. the R7 and the Sigma 150-600 would be a great combo, or the Canon 100-500 if you can swing it.
I'm not sure if you answered this already but I couldn't find it - what do you think about super zoom bridge cameras? Like Nikon P950 or Canon SX70 HS? I know that they are not full frame but they are much cheaper than "normal" camera and lenses. Actually P950 already is stretching my budget. I've never had a real camera but I would really like one with good zoom. Primarily for birding and other wildlife.
Well done review! Though no IBIS you made the handheld pans look quite good..need to be slow and steady (and if you weren’t the rolling shutter would look bad too). Refurbished models under $1000 at Canon right now. Probably the best entry level FF, though like many, wish Canon allowed 3rd party lenses…would be welcomed, especially with this camera.
Great review Simon. Just subscribed . Practical and thorough. Is the color science that much better on the R8 than the R6 ? I heard using the R8 with glasses is also not as nice as with the R6. Want to be able to grow over time with my purchase. Would you pick a Used R6 over a new R8 for someone who wants a good/ great growth potential for portraits and event photography where video is not important and wildlife is just an occasional consideration. Thank you so much.😊
My biggest wall deciding what camera to get for 4k video is the sensor type. Full frame? Or crop sensor. Price is a big factor: My buget is under $1,600, if possible. I like full frame because of the wider image which I assume would provide better wide screen cropping. I was looking at R6, R8, and 90D. 90D has the best price and I love the joystick for moving around the menu screens, but then there is the crop sensor.
Great product review. Generally one gets get the features and performance they pay for. I like how you show the advantages and disadvantages of each design decision Canon made. For example a smaller battery or the shutter mechanism. Budget dictates what you can get in a camera so being practical about what you get is helpful. What is really interesting is that the door to wildlife photography is definitely open at low cost when you consider an inexpensive lens option such as the RF 100-400mm USM.
Is this a good first full frame ? Also So with the lack of a mechanical shutter, is a cameras shutter count no longer important? Do you have a video regarding the differences / pros/cons of mechanical vs electronic?
First of all I'd like to say very good through review of the camera. Thanks a lot! Secondly I'd like to ask your opinion on this camera. I'm a fairly long time Canon DSLR shooter (mostly 7D) and I'm about to switch over to mirrorless. Full frame isn't a must have but while I'm making a change I'd like to switch over to FF finally as well. I'm not a pro by all means but when I do something I'd like to do it as best as I can. I mostly shoot birds like seagulls which doesn't really count as wildlife in my opinion, outdoor sports like soccer, voleyball or tennis and a little bit of macro. With my new camera I'd like to take a serious step into portrait photography as well. The setup I have in mind, at least to start off, is Canon R8 with Canon 24-105L f4, 50mm f1.8 stm using the adaptor. What do you think of this setup? Autofocus is important and I'm a bit worries about using adapters.
Thank you very much for this video. I have the R8 with the 24-105 f/4 L since about one month, and I'm very happy with it so far, while still getting used to all the new features it offers compared to my old 7D. Now I have to save up some money to buy a new tele zoom lens. I really hope the Sigma 150-600 Sport will be available for the R-mount soon.
I have the R10, the same battery the r8 uses, and with changing a few settings I have no problem shooting 400-600 shots with half a charge on my battery
Idea for a show….How would recommend we care for our camera and lens in a marine environment like being out on a boat or on the beach around salt air? Cleaning recommendations? Lenses cleaning? Thanks. I am so happy I found your page!
Well, I was looking at a step up from my R10, so, I might look for a comparison to see what I am giving up. I am only looking to shoot landscapes and have 3 lenses I can use from my R10.
The sensor is not shielded by a curtain when changing lenses so dust contamination of the sensor in this situation is more likely in comparison to what would be the case for the R6 or R5 for example. Therefore, it seems that it is best to pair this camera with a good quality image stabilized zoom lens that covers 90% of the desired use-cases and basically leave the lens on the camera.
I’m in the camp that it’s definitely not worth the shutter wear and tear even on camera bodies that have this feature. If dust is going to to go anywhere I rather it on the sensor glass that can be easily blown off and swabbed than on the curtain that can’t be touched without being damaged.
Another very detailed video....but presented in a way both advanced and beginner can understand and learn from. Well done on your colabaration. The course will be money very well spent.
Thanks for another great video, just back from a short trip to northern Denmark (holiday, but did manage to do some photography). Thanks to your videos and tips I managed to get some shots I'm very satisfied with!
I have the R7. I have a speedbooster which lets me use most EF lenses very much like they would be on FF. But the R8 looks like a good second body choice.
Generally, full frame for better low light, and APS-C for reach. But better to compare the R7 with the R6 or 5. If you’re familiar with Canon’s pre-mirrorless lineup, the R7 is the 7D, which was their crop version of the 5D. Then the 6D came in after.
Thank you for providing such helpful video. Just wanted to know more about any heating issue of R8 since I have found many such videos on RUclips recently.
I currently have the Canon 77d and I need an upgrade desperately. I’m probably getting the R8 and I’ll be using an adapter since I already have a lot of glass 😅
So agree regarding the "pre-recording" the DPP is a drag to use and selecting "in camera" is a terrible option, I also agree half a second is enough. I just hope Canon improve the processing on this (using the R6ii)
First of all I'm really enjoying your content I'm learning a lot about editing and photographic landscapes, which is what I also want to start photographing I'm looking for my first camera I was thinking about a Canon R50 or R10 to start this journey I would like to know if they are good options or should you look for something different in that price range, thank you very much
You make a great case for this camera and it’s one I’m considering as my first mirrorless. Wonder if you could do a follow up on suggested lenses for someone getting started (or new to Canon). Lack of third party glass steers a lot of people to Sony.
Dang if only i had the extra cash to take your class. Would you buy the r6 referbished over the r7? Im wanting to upgrade at the end of the year. I have been trying to figure out what to buy. I only have a 400mm f5.6. Cant wait to see some more videos on the r8. Have a good day.
Hi Simon, Brilliant video as always, your channel is invaluable! It's a bit old now but will you ever review & share your thoughts on the RP? I'm on a tight budget & can't quite stretch to the R8. I've read the AF is excellent on the RP but it's just 4fps servo, what's your advice? I'm set on Full frame & have budgeted for the RF100-400, rather than going for the R10 Crop. Switching from Fuji X-T1! Or if anybody else has any insights I'd love to hear all opinions! Thanks!
@@simon_dentremont Hi Simon, many thanks for your thoughts, very helpful! I think on balance the RP will leave me disappointed then, despite honing my timing & technique on the XT1 I now feel the need for more speed the R8 can offer! All the very best, Leo
Awesome video! Quick question: do you happen to know how low the shutter speed can go in videos? Looking for a camera that can do that cool slow/delayed shutter effect. Thanks!
I consider myself a jack of all trades, master of none when it comes to photography, and the R8 is very versatile. Works well for my astrophotgraphy, while also having the ability to track wildlife and airplanes extremely well, and is more than sufficient at landscapes and portrait photography. I cheated and extended the body with a Canon RP third party battery grip. Canon reused the RP body for the R8, so almost all RP accessories fit the R8.
Excellent video! Super informative. I'm kind of torn right now re: an astro camera to replace my 6D, which finally wore out. Been thinking of the R6 MK II but it's pricier and I'm an old bird on a budget. :) I'm a committed Canon shooter though and I have a lot of EF lenses. So your video gives me another possible option. Thanks!
I have recently purchased the R8 for creating underwater video's. I was a bit disappointed in the fact that the camera does not have IBIS, which makes me dependant on lens stabilisation. Stabilisation is very important underwater. However, I have come across a very interesting solution for extra stability! Have you heard of the GyroFlow software? When pairing a camera like the R8 with an actioncam such as a GoPro mounted next to each other, the software can use the gyro data from the GoPro, to accurately correct for small movements. I'm excited to try this out, as the GoPro is already in my possession! I think this a lot more accurate then the digital stabilisation canon offers.
Just got the R8 as a "studio camera" myself. Are you using it in webcam mode or with a video capture device or just recording internally? For me the abilty to plug it in and use as a webcam was another "studio feature" I wanted to take advantage of.
I'm picky, I have to admit. I have seen other viefinders (and optical viewfinders) and I want something better for wildlife. I always feel like Canon cripples their lower end bodies in some critical way. In the case of the R8 (and R7) it's the viewfinder. I would gladly fork over the extra to get the same viewfinder as the R6. I do think it's amazing that they give their best AF in all their lesser bodies.
honestly for any wildlife photographer, I'd recommend the R7 any day over the R8 for someone looking at a new camera for 1500 USD Like you pointed out, 6fps with the electrnic first curtain shutter is a little bit slow, and 40fps results in awesome performance but a lot of images to go through. The R7 has a mechanical shutter that goes up to 15fps with full quality 14bit RAWs and no concerns of rolling shutter at all. 15fps is to me ideal for most situations, but if you need it there is still a 30fps mode in electronic shutter, but keep in mind that the readout speed is substantially slower than the R6, so rolling shutter distortion would be more visible. Also worth pointing out that if the image quality is great, and you have additionnal reach with the APS-C crop, the low-light performance and noise levels are higher compared to the full frame RF cameras. Not a huge deal, especially considering there is IBIS, dual slots, better controls (joystick, back wheel etc) and a much bigger battery to sweeten the deal Honestly, both the R7 and R8 are awesome, it's just a matter of what you prioritize most. Also worth noting that if you're okay with the drawbacks of both cameras (lack of IBIS/single slot/smaller battery for R8, smaller sensor for R7), you can save a decent amount of money with the R10 that has the same autofocus system, still 15fps mechanical and up to 23fps electronic, in a smaller package ! The R8's older brother, the RP is however not worth considering.
I feel like the R8 is like the landscape / Milky Way value king. The R7 has a lot of features that make it a better generalist camera if you don't *need* the FF sensor, and going up $1000 to the R6 or R6ii gets you those features with a full frame sensor. Thus, the R8 is relegated to a role of the cheapest viable way to get a full frame sensor for RF mount, whether that be as a limited-purpose primary body or as a cheap second body.
I’m looking to upgrade from the Canon R50 and looking the R8 or the R6 MkII. I have the RF budget prime lenses, the 35mm 1.8, the 85mm F2 and the Zoom 18-150mm lens! Which one would you recommend me to upgrade to?
R6 II if you shoot handheld alot (for the IBIS) or need the bigger battery for days shooting lots of pics like a wedding. Otherwise the R8 and use the savings for your next favorite lens.
Hi! Great video! What Canon camera would you recommend to start shooting portrait photography? I see that a full frume camera is often suggested when shooting portraits. I would like to get an R6, as you recommends in the comments because it has IBIS, but it's a bit expensive to me, so I am wondering is the R8 worth the, almost, 1000€ more than the RP? Or maybe there is another camera I am not aware of that would work great! Your help would be much appreciated! 🙏

I’d go R8 if doing alot of indoor photography. The 24-105 f4 RF is a good all rounder. For fun though, the 35mm RF macro would allow you to get some cool shots, like your cats eye…but it’s not as flexible as a zoom.

Been thinking about getting the R7 myself as a replacement for a 70D.
Another great video! Using the customize buttons menu I mapped the d pad to 'Direct AF point selection' so I could move the AF point around.
Great tip!
I was just gifted one for my birthday!!! I’ve been using it and absolutely LOVE! Learning so much from your content, thank you!
Love your very informative and positive attitude towards the R8. It was a great 5Diii replacement for me, wanting to have a significantly lighter body but still full-frame.
Good choice!
My EOS R's menu has more accurate battery information. I believe the R8 also has. SET UP3. Battery Info.
@@michelecintramika8482 Nope - same indicator. Going from “all fine” straight to “change battery”.
I've never had a full frame camera, but have an interest in Milky Way photography. I'm glad to hear the R8 would be fine for that!
Put a fast lens on it and you’re golden. Check out my video for tips. ruclips.net/video/hz0fcW7rcpg/видео.htmlsi=D65o6wWxI1OY9tXk
An R8 with IBIS would have been a best seller!!! It's sensor is one of Canon best sensors ever made. Thank you.
Agree, but them it would be close to an R6.
@@simon_dentremontthat’s what they never realize😂
I have never in my 62 years owned a single Cannon camera. No specific reason other than my first being Pentax and then moved to Nikon Digital. I don't have a negative reason for no Cannon, just never purchased one. I would like to give the new OM1 a try. Thanks for sharing
I have the R5 and just got the R3 from Camera Canada, the R3 is mind blowing, great video as always Simon!!
Thanks for this. I always trust your opinion.
Great review. Perhaps this R8 will finally replace my old 550D...
Excellent review, very thorough and intelligent. I think this will fit my needs. The problem of the hiker/photographer-manage pack weight and camera features/quality. The light R8 may fit the bill nicely.
Your videos are the best Simon. Super packed with information.
Cheers!
Great balanced and practical camera review, Simon - just like your wildlife technique videos. You’re the best. Enjoy your safari. Looking forward to seeing your photos from that excursion.
Yes r8 is THE BEST camera EVER !!!! I have it and rf 24 1.8 - its AMMMMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember too the anticipation of getting some freshly developed slides back. I think it felt like when one of my kids opens a pack of Pokemon cards!
Hi Simon,
I’ve been taking photographing birds for a few years.
Anything lighter? Like can rf 600mm f.11 stm?
@@simon_dentremont
Thank you for your kind answer. I am a big fan of your work
I'm not sure if you answered this already but I couldn't find it - what do you think about super zoom bridge cameras?
What mean entry level? I'm a pro, but poor😂 so choosing R8 cause don't have money😂😂😂
@@elimelart more ‘low entry cost’. Camera can certainly be used by pros…most can.
Thank you so much.😊
I would probably take a used R6, but not for colour science, but for battery life, stabilized sensor and customizability/buttons/dials.
The R8 has amazing video features for the price, same as the R6
Now this was a review I could get into. It didn't feel as though you worked for canon. Well done. I enjoy your videos!!!
Beautiful shots, especially of the red-winged blackbird!
Good luck to everyone who purchases this course and enters themselves into the chance of winning that monster lens. It will likely be invaluable.
I have the R10, the same battery the r8 uses, and with changing a few settings I have no problem shooting 400-600 shots with half a charge on my battery
Simon, thanks for the concise exploration of the R8. While I am still heavily leaning toward the R7 you gave me lots to think about.
Idea for a show….How would recommend we care for our camera and lens in a marine environment like being out on a boat or on the beach around salt air? Cleaning recommendations? Lenses cleaning? Thanks. I am so happy I found your page!
Great review. I've had my R8 for a couple weeks. Much to learn. Trying to understand. There is no option/setting for second shutter?
yes, theres a shutter option. You need to be in photo mode.
I will pay the price of r6ii for a r8 with IBIS, with minimal increase in the weight and size. +RF50.8 is perfect.
I absolutely love mine!
Great to see more lightweight and price-accesible bodies out there!
Great video Simon, Thanks for the information and congrats on the new course !!
I have the R7. I have a speedbooster which lets me use most EF lenses very much like they would be on FF. But the R8 looks like a good second body choice.
Great video, as allways... BTW, between R7 and R8, would you go for the full frame or stick with a more "jacked up" aps-c?
Your photographs are so good, they should be illegal for being too good.
would you recommend this or the r6 for an all rounder photography camera? is the sensor resolution difference a deal breaker?
Thank you,
Please contact your contacts at Canon and find out when the updated firmware for the 90D will be released.
So agree regarding the "pre-recording" the DPP is a drag to use and selecting "in camera" is a terrible option, I also agree half a second is enough. I just hope Canon improve the processing on this (using the R6ii)
First of all I'm really enjoying your content I'm learning a lot about editing and photographic landscapes, which is what I also want to start photographing I'm looking for my first camera I was thinking about a Canon R50 or R10 to start this journey I would like to know if they are good options or should you look for something different in that price range, thank you very much
For landscapes, also consider an R8 full frame.
Hi Simon,
Brilliant video as always, your channel is invaluable!
Thanks!
I’m not sure the AF on the RP is that good in all scenarios. Ok for portraits, but not for Wildlfe or fast action.
@@simon_dentremont Hi Simon, many thanks for your thoughts, very helpful! I think on balance the RP will leave me disappointed then, despite honing my timing & technique on the XT1 I now feel the need for more speed the R8 can offer!
All the very best,
Leo
Thank you for this video. I've been researching Canon R camera and was undecided before seeing this video. I'm not shopping for a R8!
Glad it was helpful!
Chosing r8 for family, art portraits and vlog for youtube.
i have R8 and rf 24 1.8 and i LOVE IT !!!!!!!! Its THE BEST camera EVER !!!!
@@Dmitrii_88 what you have tried?
I want to try it for real estate. Just getting started and there is a local demand. I need to get a super wide angle lens, but I think this will work.
Awesome video! Quick question: do you happen to know how low the shutter speed can go in videos? Looking for a camera that can do that cool slow/delayed shutter effect. Thanks!
I’ve shot 1/30th second but it looks a bit wonky. It could work for some artistic effect perhaps.
Thanks!
So very thankful Simon. Does r8 have weather sealing?
Not as mcu as other models
I will never not get excited by that sick heads on eagle 🦅 video
it would be nice if they put the C1 and C2 next to Manual on the dial.
Awesome video Simon, thank you so much
I'm picky, I have to admit.
I do think it's amazing that they give their best AF in all their lesser bodies.
honestly for any wildlife photographer, I'd recommend the R7 any day over the R8 for someone looking at a new camera for 1500 USD
Like you pointed out, 6fps with the electrnic first curtain shutter is a little bit slow, and 40fps results in awesome performance but a lot of images to go through.
Not a huge deal, especially considering there is IBIS, dual slots, better controls (joystick, back wheel etc) and a much bigger battery to sweeten the deal
Honestly, both the R7 and R8 are awesome, it's just a matter of what you prioritize most.
Curious to know your thoughts about this compared to the Sony a7C mk1.
I’d get the R8 over the RP to get the eye detection, and pair it with an image stabilized lens to make up the loss of the IBIS compared to the R6.

Thanks for this review, I finally bought Canon R8 after watching your video. The auto focus is super amazing, I just trust the camera to do the AF and now I can put more attention on the composition
Oh, and i use a gimbal for obvious reasons. It has NO IBS, which is good because that can change your image quality! It’s better to know how to handle your camera properly then depend on that technology!
Hi, I have an R7 and I'm looking for a backup camera, the R6 is out of my budget, but this R8 seems good to me, thank you for your, again, perfect explanation. Ooh and I have the 70-300 L from Canon but also the Sigma Contemporary 600mm, so perfect for the R8, wildlife shooting
Having one crop and one full frame is a sweet combo.

There are so many cameras I've been looking at the r, rp, sony aii and all the cameras you have been talking about. Note light can be a challenge in homes and I wouldn't be bringing any lighting with me to fix this thanks for your input.
R, RP or R8 would be fine. Main thing is to get a wide lens.
This was such an amazing video to watch I didn't want it to end.
I'm looking for a camera for my wife so she can be my second shooter for events. I'm tossing between the R8 and the R6 II, so thank you for this video.
Both solid. R6II has a large battery and IBIS which is nice. She may like the R8 for small size and light weight

I’m not a professional I would say beginner I have my old 550D but I need a new one and I want to upgrade to mirrorless. I was thinking about r7 but it’s crop frame vs r8 full frame, what will suit me best for my purposes? And what lens do you suggest? Thank you for your answer ☺️🙏🏻
I’d go R8 if doing alot of indoor photography. The 24-105 f4 RF is a good all rounder. For fun though, the 35mm RF macro would allow you to get some cool shots, like your cats eye…but it’s not as flexible as a zoom.
