I am a young budget filmmaker/content creator. I know for a fact that digital creating is my passion and want to pursue it wholeheartedly. I am trying to find where I want to go with this passion to make a living while still enjoying it. I got my first camera, Canon T7i in 2021 and am still using that camera to this day. Great beginner camera, however, as I improve my creating, I am looking for a more capable camera that will provide high-quality videos and photos at a "budget" price. I was looking at the EOS R on the used market but there were just too many limitations that come along with it. I was so happy when Canon announced this camera cause it is literally the perfect upgrade for me. Just need to get a couple projects done for some companies/friends and then the R8 is mine!! Thanks, Manny, for the informative video.
damn, we are in the same page. I bought my first ever camera around 2020/2021 which is a Canon 250D, it is a very good beginner camera, after I finish high school I begin to lean on to photography and filmmaking, and that's where I begin to upgrade my game. I will buy mine in my next payday, can't wait.
I remember my first DSLR 20D was about $1500. It is amazing how far the camera technology advanced. I just moved to mirrorless from 5D mark iv, so I am trying to learn how to use the auto focus system in R6 ii. R8 with the same AF system is a killer. It is good to have competition. Without Sony pushing hard and fast in mirrorless, Canon may still be sitting back and making small improvements on the 5D series.
My 1st DSLR - Nikon D100 (2002), 2003 EOS 10D. Got all 10D up to 50D, the 60D sucked, because 1) Plastic body 2) no 100% OVF 3) single card slot, so the D7000 featured all this into 2010, and more. :) Still, bought the 5D into 2006.
I’m totally planning on getting the R8! I’m currently using a 6D Mk I and was thinking of finding a used R6 Mk I, but even used those are more the $1500! I think the R8 is a perfect way to get people into mirrorless from their DSLR and to get people to upgrade from a crop sensor! It’s like a unicorn camera in my opinion.
@@themediocrephotographer1301 i work in tv and film as gaffer. Arri cine cameras dont have dual slots. They use multiple smaller cards and they only buy top of the line data storage and test them well before using them to film. They also backup data as they shoot. I shot weddings for years with a 7d and a 6d. Never had an issue only having 1 slot on the 6d. Its not a huge dealbreaker for me. Ymmv tho.
@@pahwraith you’ve literally just contradicted yourself… saying the single card slot isn’t a deal breaker/arri doesn’t have multiple slots… yet that they still have a backup.. showing that having some kinda of backup IS essential for paid work.
Cameras are getting more affordable, unfortunately quality glass, especially RF glass still makes out of my budget. I'll be able to upgrade from my Canon 90d in a couple years hopefully.
I suggest looking at old used EF glass! There's some gems out there, lot's of 90s L glass for around $500 apiece with similar quality to modern day lenses. Like the 80-200 f/2.8, or the 28-70 f/2.8 or the 135mm f/2.0
I still use my old EF lenses (some of them are 20 years old) on my R6ii and my R. I have only 1 RF lens because it is the ONE: RF 28-70 f/2 😍 I am not planning to get another RF lens because the EF lens works very good on my R/R6ii camera. Even better than on my 5dmarkIV !
I'll be getting one of these for sure! But I won't be buying any Canon glass other than the 35mm 1.8 RF I have now. I'm not spending $2300 for the 50 1.2 and $2700 for the 85mm 1.2. I have a Samyang 85mm 1.4 that was $600 and is sharp!
IBIS isn’t a dealbreaker for me, but the small battery and the lack of a second card slot are. I shoot raw and need that second card as a backup to the other card. So other than that, this is a pretty good camera.
Can live with small battery or 2nd card with more frequent battery change and backup device. Lacking IBIS is something I can't mitigate or work around. Guess could lug around tripod.
Dual card is overrated you can also likely die on your way to a shoot. 4 years with two EOS Rs shooting weddings never had a problem i just bought 2 more cheap as chips.
Not to mention backward compatibility with all EF lenses, not only they work, they work even better, that's a HUGE money saving, adapter with the ring and you have all your old lenses working better and the ring just like RF lenses, it's sick!
It is, but compared to ones like the Z5 it's not the best value. The only real shortcomings of the Z5 is the heavy 4k crop and slower AF (although not bad after firmware updates are applied). But it has what many of the other FF cameras have (IBIS and dual card slots) and is $100 cheaper than the R8.
Perfect outro Manny! lol. Thank you for all you do. You're my favorite by far and I always learn a ton by watching your videos. Plus, you're hilarious as well. Thanks for keeping it real. Blessings
Manny, Interesting option. I have the R6 but i can see this being a more attractive alternative for traveling and a carry around camera. The RF lenses i have and would use with it all have IS, and third party LPE17 batteries are dirt cheap. The tweaks up in resolution and AF performance are solid ‘pluses’ for my use. Gotta figure out if i can work with the shutter limitations.
I got the R8 this year, paired with Tamron 24-70, it's really nice!!! I've been meaning to get life of Riza & casey neistat style videos but I haven't figured out how to get that cinematicness after framing a shot
Watched Jared and now yours about the R8 and comparisons of those other options, I'd say the R8, is definitely a good choice considering my budget and the use of it. Thanks to y'all!
In addition to lack of IBIS, dual slots, and large battery I think the other big compromise with the R8 is the lack of mechanical shutter. The electronic shutter is fine for many situations, but will produce rolling shutter effect in some action shots. I think Canon did a good job positioning the R8 vs R7, which addresses all those issues but with a crop sensor.
would be great to have a group portrait mode where the aperture and focus distance are set automatically to allow sharpness for all group portrait participants. Because often I increase my aperture like I take landscape photography so I make sure everyone is in focus, but then I have to overly increase my ISO. Is that just me? (knowing that I'm an advance beginner at photography)
They have that on the R6 mk ii so I’m assuming it would be on the R8 but it’s one of the auto plus modes so lots of pro’s probably wouldn’t use it. I imagine that’s why they don’t mention it in reviews
As an RP user who recently got an R6, these features were everything I was looking for when I went to upgrade (minus the absence of IBIS). The RP had a HUGE buff with this one, I really thought there wouldn't be a refreshed and better version of a camera like this, full frame, uncropped 4K, CLog3 and 40 FPS that costs a lot less than the latest version of the R6 is crazy. Seriously if Canon just lifted the 3rd party lens ban they would sell so many more units of the latest RF low cost bodies to beginners which would most likely lead to return customers upgrading to something like an R6ii or an R5 or R5ii etc and eventually sporting all the Canon RF L lenses in the future. It really baffles me that Canon can't come to terms with this, it would probably make Canon the best in the business for all skill levels and niches. When anyone that's interested in starting a photography hobby I always steer them to Sony but if the lens issue wasn't a thing I'd absolutely steer them to Canon, just imagine how many more people are doing this, that's a lot of sales and potential loyal customers Canon is losing.
I do have them, they do somewhat work but the problem I have is that it makes the kit heavier, every adapter I've used with both the RP and the R6 have issues quite often (trouble with connection fault which I have to turn the camera off and pop the battery out to "reset" it) which is very scary at a critical moments like in weddings etc, adapters also just don't sit right and always have a bit of wiggle and lastly the EF lenses are older now and there's no newer lenses coming out for a dead mount. Also if you're gonna say something about cheap adapters, I've used the Meike, Viltrox, JJC and of course, the Canon adapter, they all had the same issues with my RP and my new R6. It is do-able but it isn't very reliable in my experience. For any type of photography that doesn't rely on you getting critical non repeatable shots like landscape, street, portrait or car photography then really it's ok, but with events it's kinda scary when you have a malfunction in those moments. @@fredepstein
I started shooting with a Canon Rebel T2i, I was given a Canon EOS 7D, I now shoot with a Sony A73, and I honestly want a Canon R6 Mark 2 so bad!! This R8 is pretty amazing though too! It would be awesome to have a head to head comparison of the R6M2 and the R8.
Hey Manny, The original R6 (not mk2) is pretty much the same price as this R8 now here in the UK. In my opinion the R6 is also a better and more professional camera. I am looking on buying. Any reason you'd buy the R8 over the R6? The R8 is newer but doesn't seem as good after watching this and jareds video and looking over the specs. R6 can compete and achieve more than this camera. Would you agree that the R6 is better? I don't do any video, only photography (mainly outdoors, action, birds in flight, nature, landscape etc). Would love and appreciate your thoughts before I purchase one of them. Cheers :)
Yes, I think an R6 is the better option in almost every aspect except resolution. Better battery, faster mechanical shutter, better viewfinder, better ergonomics, better environmental protection, first curtain can be set to mechanical, better high iso. The R8 scores only with a little more resolution, pre-shoot bursts, faster fps with electronic shutter with less rolling shutter. the autofocusing is also more advanced, but I think it is already amazingly good on the R6 mkI.
it depends : if you need a small and light body R8 is the choice. r6 is +200 gr and bigger. For my use : street photos, family camera for travel, wife and jids taking pictures, RP and R8 are the choice.
@@lapindefou2056 Of course it always depends on your personal needs and RP or R8 paired with the 35mm F1.8 is a great combo, which I also like to use. And i also think the RP and even more the R8 ist more than enough camera for most people. But if you really want to take advantage of the full frame sensor, the glass is getting big and the bulk is about the same. The kit zooms options aren't that impressive, unfortunately.
Should I switch from my r50 to this ? I shoot fight photography mostly and i do alot of filming for ig reels as well thanks for any opinions or advice 🙏🏼
Thank you very much for this video and your explanations. As usual Canon loves to make cameras at unbeatable prices then after people are stuck with the camera and well they are forced to buy their lenses and there it hurts! Example : Canon R8 ($1500) with a RF 24-70 f2.8 lens ($2400), you are at more than $3900 !!! Sony A7 IV ($2500) with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G2 ($900) and you are at $3400. With a better battery, higher resolution, two SD card slots etc... The day you want to change your camera, you will be forced to stay with Canon because you have their lenses and you are stuck! The stratagem is formidable. Imagine this R8 which is an excellent camera with the possibility to include Tamron or Sigma lenses, you will have the perfect combo to start with Full Frame !!!! However for me I will not switch to Canon until they open their mount to others. Peace D@vid
This applies to any lenses. If you want to change your camera system, you have to change your lenses. Doesn't matter if they are made by Canon, Nikon, Tamron or Sigma.
To be fair you could get the a RF-EF adapter ( theres no difference in performance ) and use a sigma or tamron 24-70... You'd be at the price of the Sony A7 IV then xD. Though duel card slots is where the R8 fails imo, even Nikon put 2 card slots in their budget full frames. Honestly right now if you can deal with the worst AF of the Z5 it with the budget lenses is the best deal atm. And its not even like the Z5 has bad AF if you compare it to DSLRs from like 2016 lol
The R8 autofocus blows the a7iv out of the water. You buy Canon glass once. The bodies come and go with any brand. You want amazing glass that you keep for a decade or more and then upgrade bodies much more often. Canon ends up being cheaper over time.
Check out the cannon eg-e1 extension grip. It feels fantastic on the R8 and it matches all of the body and trim lines. It even has a twist lock latch on the battery door.
It’s interesting they consider this a replacement to the R but clearly used the body of the RP. It makes some sense though considering the body shares some similarities with the R62. I’m sure, as usual, there will be a lot of moaning and groaning about what Canon should or shouldn’t have done, but for the price point and the video features of this camera, it seems hella solid to me. Side note, I’ve been planning to make a video for a while on how camera manufacturers have really missed the boat on putting smartphone-esque computational AI in their cameras, it’s interesting to hear that Canon is moving in that direction, even if they’re hesitant to call it such. Anyway, great video my G.
From a spec standpoint, it is more closely an upgrade to the R/RP than the R6 (which has IBIS, dual card slots, etc) and is more a pro-sumer camera, versus more of an entry-level camera, which is what the R8 is intended to be (entry level FF with some features omitted like second card slot and IBIS, neither of which the RP/R have).
@@HR-wd6cw yes, I don’t think anyone thought the R8 was an upgrade of the R6. Most, myself included, feel it’s an RP upgrade even though as Manny mentioned, Canon is saying it’s an R upgrade.
Thanks, Manny for this review but you didn't test the camera out in low light! I will love to see how it handles that. How many shots can one get out of the battery before changing?.. That will give one an idea of how many battery spares to carry along when shooting an event. Cheers
Planning on getting the Canon R8 with a 85mm 1.2 RF lens until the Canon R5 Mark ii comes out. I’ll have the R5ii as my primary and have the R8 roll down into my backup.
The most important comment made in the video, is that people kept a specific camera model BECAUSE IT WORKED FOR THEM. Probably the most important factor to consider given the overwhelming number of cameras on the market. The desired results are the key: if you're happy with the results, ignore the market noise and use what you have. You'll be happy and you won't go broke chasing technology.
Ya I would probably be shooting canon or they have had third part options. 2000-3000 for fast primes is insane. Plus they are rather large lenses compared to Sony offerings.
@@jjchockey Canons RF lenses are better than the sony offerings. Eg, my RF 85mm f1.2 cannot be beat. Or my RF100-500 I have on my lap tight now... magic iq and af. The biggest problem with Sony bodies is the tiny 46mm mount vs Canons 52mm. This means my Samyang EF 10mm rectalinear cannot work on a Sony body without vignetting. Sony needs to increase their mount size for me to be interested.
my plan is buying the r8, im upgrading from a canon rebel XTI. a 2008 camera, there are millions of features that my camera doesnt have, and even old things like flip out screen will be a HUGE upgrade for me, exited to get one
I hope no one has asked this question earlier or I will be repeating it. In the 48 hours that you were using the camera, how many shots can you get out of each RP battery (LP-E17)? If you did a combination of still life shots and video, what was the result?
Bro you are good at this. I like the way you explain all this. Im still saving for my first camera but im sure when i have all the money i will chech more of your videos to decide which one i will go for
great video and thanks for the upload, still have my RP ... great piece of full frame camera for photoshoot products and still shots ...... now that this comes up, instead of going for r6 ii, this becomes the best options instead ...
When I tried the Canon RP that camera punched above its weight and was only $1000, but the handling and battery drove me crazy. There isn't third party support for lenses either. The non L-lenses weren't that interesting to me. I ultimately went with Sony for those reasons.
What you mean the cripple hammer never showed up? It has IBIS? It has two card slots? It has a good battery? It has a mechanical shutter? Seems like Canon took a pretty decent sized cripple hammer to the R6ii to come up with this R8.
They gotta cut cost somewhere. For someone who may not be as hard-core to where they could justify an r6 this may make more sense sine the image quality will be the same. I don't think this is targeted as a "pro" camera, maybe "prosumer".
@@fluffywarhampster Never said otherwise. The point is that he said that Canon didn't use the cripple hammer on this camera, when they very clearly did.
@RobDTom I guess it really comes down to what feature removals you would consider crippling the camera. For some users these changes may not be a big deal. I'll probably pick this camera up since I've been looking for a good entry point into the canon ecosystem but I know I will be buying lenses with image stabilization anyway so for me the lack of ibis isn't really crippling the camera in any way. I could certainly see where the lack of a second SD card slot would be an issue for a wedding photographer but for my amateur work it's a non issue. The small batter could become pretty annoying. Everything has a degree of compromise.
@@fluffywarhampster Yes this hobby is all about compromises! I’d like to hear an example of Canon using the cripple hammer on other releases and tell me how the cripple hammer on the R8 isn’t just as bad or worse
Exactly. I dusted off the lowly Z6 today shooting a group of 6 people and was able to scroll through each person. They (the group canon flew out) are hyping the features that canon told them to talk up. Also hyping the af but all in all the videos I’ve watched there has been bad moments of missed focus.
So would you recommend this. As it’s time for me to upgrade. Or the R5 my friend offered his for $2200 with batteries, 2 lens and bag. I do portraits, and fast action videos
Question for the people in here, i have a Canon M50 currently and i've been thinking about upgrading for some time and the canon R8 looks like the best option but i dont want to abandon the lenses i have Is there an adapter or something i could use to change the mount type?
Might be a great budget camera but I'd still struggle to recommend this for a beginner looking for their first full frame camera. It's greatly hindered by lack of 3rd party lenses. If you want a F2.8 zoom, it's $2500 for rf 24-70. It would be fantastic if you could pair this lens with a $1000 2.8 zoom from sigma or tamron. There is room in the market/demand for lesser 2.8 glass, not everyone needs to choose between kit lens or best of the best L glass.
Just buy EF lenses. Theirs third party support and cheaper native ef glass that adapt seamlessly. The lack of 3rd party on the RF lineup really is blown completely out of proportion
@@themediocrephotographer1301 yup, I bought R6 II and I have 24-105 EF and will buy more EF lenses, probably 70-200 f 2.8 Mark II. Only lenses I am missing and I would love to have it something similar to Sony 200-600 or Nikon 200-500 and the Tamron 35-150 f 2-2.8, because I prefer to have zooms and not switch lenses. Coming from Nikon D750 btw.
@@themediocrephotographer1301 It's not, they're big, heavy and old, that's before you account for the adapter that add extra weight and length to the lens. It's a way around a problem that is entirely Canon's fault, sure. Then you have 3rd party lenses on other systems that are optically 90% as good as the native glass for fraction of the price. Come on, you can't say "it's not a problem, just use this 15 year old lens designed for dslr on your brand new camera"
@@mikolv21 Na big dawg I’m not sayin use a 15 year old lens I’m sayin that the whole thing is blown way out of proportion and there are a lot of budget relatively new and seamless glass in the EF front. The adapter is really not that big and EF glass is still really nice. Canon will ultimately end up opening the mount to sigma and tamron but in the mean time EF is a super viable option. Not saying that they should never open the mount but that people (like yourself) are making this a huge deal when it really isn’t that big of an issue.
A beginner isn't looking at a 24-70 zoom lens. Heck most beginners are starting with the kit lens. Skip the kit lens and pick up the R8 with say a 24 and 50 1.8 is going to give a beginner better aperature at a cheaper price then what any of the competition can do. Not to mention 4k60 no crop.
The camera that can compete is the Nikon z5 2 card slot, ibis , WR body a 24 mp and better battery life at lower price. And pare with the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 S is like $1,800
I also tested it - I think the Fuji XT5 is the better option for the people in this price range, good canon glass is so expensive and fujis new 40 mp sensor and ibis is just on a league of their own at this price …. And I’d rather have f2 glass on a APS-C body than f3.5 and up on a full frame …. Especially with ibis included…
When you shoot subjects not a human being posing for a shot, like kids running around, sports, dogs chasing each other, IBIS is basically useless. You are going to use a shutter speed so fast that far exceeding any remote possibility of beneficial from IBIS. But AF and af tracking, depth of field, bokeh are still important. Canon R8 with RF100-400 will be far far superior and reliable in shooting fast moving subjects than equivalent Fuji system for the same total cost.
@@frankluo230 not at all - we’re talking 1-3 pictures more in focus out of 40 pictures with the canon R8 with the 100-400 compared to an XT5 with the 100-400 (which is basically a 150-600) not to talk about the 40 mp compares to 24 of the canon which essentially makes it able to crop and still retaining a sharper image. 24 mp for birds etc is really not useable in most scenarios and is a way bigger loss than having ibis (which you made it sound like it was a loss) lol Not only that, it has a mechanical shutter as well and yes, the ibis is useless (in most cases) when capturing stills in speed (which wasn’t what I was talking about) but in video or to capture movement, it’s the only way. I own the Sony A1 / FX3 the Canon R3 / R5 for my professional work, but I take out my Fuji more often as it’s the best medium when it comes to weight, quality and not to forget about style…. (It makes me want to shoot) and if you think the crop sensor is worse than FF, then you’re very ignorant…. It would be like people saying that MF is superior to FF…. It’s not about the sensors anymore…
@@VinceDae unfortunately you talk about 2.5x price difference between Fuji 100-400 and Canon rf 100-400, the smaller image circle apsC lens is more expensive. Not better image quality, inferior autofocus motor, no larger aperture.
@@frankluo230 it’s not inferior? … what are you talking about? I would tell you to try the cameras and not just watch reviews. Not to mention my 20+ years as a professional photographer.
@@robertm3951 Why should someone buy old EF glass? That's very customer unfriendly and what about new buyers into the system? Is this the innovative way of Canon? @@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas Lenses do not go bad with age. I am not defending Canon but buying native lenses just to have the newest and the latest is a waste of money.
One of the things I missed when downgrading from the R5 to the RP was the ability to add cropping information (not aspect ratio), which would show guide lines and 'pre-crop' the RAW file when importing to LR. I liked being able to add cropping info for 5:4. Is that available for the R8?
Why did you downgrade? Seems like a huge step down. I would’ve downgraded to something like the R6. Something less expensive but still fully functioned.
@@RiceCubeTech I downgraded it because I wanted a lighter and more compact system. Basically wanted an A7C but while staying with Canon. I mostly take it out for travel and hiking trips. I also downgraded from the 70-200 f/2.8 to the f/4. The super compact 70-200’s of Canon are one of the main reasons for me staying with Canon instead of moving to the A7C.
@@brodylockwood14 It was a 630 gam difference between the R5+70-200/2.8 vs the RP+70-200/4. It normally doesn't feel too different, but if you have it on a capture clip while doing 10mile hikes each day, it def feels very different at the end of the day.
You could have just downgraded the lens from a 2.8 version to an f/4 version. That would have probably equated to a much smaller and lighter configuration while not sacrificing too much in terms of IQ and functions. I would have done that first and seen how I liked the combo before going all out and replacing the 2.8 AND the R5 at the same time.
R8 is the best FF camera for the price. No IBIS , No Dual card slot, No bigger battery 🤷 NO PROBLEM because of excellent sensor and processor (processor and focusing system from R3) Love the quality of image and videos ❤
lol. The z5 is $200 less and has a better EVF, IBIS, a fully mechanical shutter that goes to 1/8000s, dual card slots, a full sized battery and weather sealing. The R8 is a joke. It should be like $800
You compared this camera to Sony A7III from the past, but probably forgot that R8 does not have IBIS in body like A7III has, this is big difference, and I would like to have a little heavier and greater body but with stabilization. Moreover, RF 50mm does not have IS, good luck with dark scenes XD. hey Canon wake up this is 2023, even low-price smartphone has built IBIS...
This body fits a very interesting spot. You better believe it's a cut down r62 because that's exactly what it is. No joystick, no ibis (ouch) a crappier battery, One less battery slot, and some omissions here and there. And it sucks how manufacturers are using the availability of a grip to separate the marketing further. Just pathetic. $1,000 less. There is a few gotchas. If you're coming from a R you're going to lose six megapixels. That's tough. Otherwise, this is a bullseye shot for someone wanting to upgrade it autofocus from the old R, genuine upgrade over the RP, and an upgrade for r10 users with a find out that their Rfs lenses are the trashiest in its class. Unless the users invest in adapted EF glass, they will have the option of buying very boring low end lenses or hyper-expensive L lenses. The icing on that crap cake is no third party lenses. It's like a trap door waiting for them lol. Canon marketing, you have earned your money. You guys are awesome and unfortunately the best and worst way possible.
Yo bro you can see me anytime 😅 This camera looks sick! Sony really needs to update the A7c now so they can compete for best FF entry level camera. You really can’t go wrong with any camera brand these days (except Olympus)
The A7C II can compete but probably not completely takeover Canon's share. The A7C II would pretty much reference A7IV, so likely 4k 60fps is cropped. However, Sony will have Canon beat by including IBIS and better battery life. Unsure how Sony would price considering the original A7C released at $1800 and the A7IV is currently $2500.
@@remdell I agree but don't agree. Remember the a7c is the exact same as the a7iii but w/ updated color science, catalyst browse etc. If they stick with the same model they will give us an a7iv with a smaller EVF and updated features for less money. With sony's lens selection being cheaper than RF glass and more 3rd party options than Canon this would make Sony a better buy for beginners. But hey lets keep the battle going so we can get nicer gear
@@remdell The A7CII is rumored to be $2200. They're going to need more than battery life and IBIS to make up a $700 difference. Not to mention witht he size, weight and cost of the R8 is basically canibalizes all the high end aps-c sony cameras. Its seems like Canon's strategy is to each Sony's lunch in the entry level space and give people a compelling reason to step up from their smartphones. Then once they are in the ecosystem upsale them in the future.
Man what a great review, such a humble opinion with great detail. Didnt say it was perfect but acknowledged its strenghts. Curious how it held up in light rain, didnt seem to have an problems im assuming?
85% of what I shoot is with off camera flash, and the lack of a mechanical shutter is concerning. Most reviewers never address this when talking about new gear. Hopefully this will be put through rigorous testing.
Kinda, but I think this is geared more towards people just stepping into the R line. Although they consider it an R replacement, by some accord you can look at this as an RP Mark II, and consider that market. Even for current R camera users, if you’re buying this camera, you likely have a specific need to do so (video, for example) and in that regard, I don’t think you’d be too pressed about having to buy the smaller (and cheaper) batteries.
Nice review, were getting the R8 for sure, im happy and surprised to see Jared 6:00 i came to his channel aswell to decide, and its official we will be getting THE R8 thanks manny!
The Canon R8 competes in the price range of the Nikon Z5 which does have IBIS stabilization and full size battery, however the Z5 4K video is cropped while the Canon R8 4K video is not, and the Canon offers several other advantages such as great tracking and fully articulating screen. They are just different in some areas. The R8 will do well for those that love Canon cameras. I own both Nikon and Canon cameras.

By canon not allowing third party lens to be used with their camera, makes the new R8 too expensive for me. I could get A7siii with a Tamron 17-28 cheaper than an R8 with 16-35mm and have 4k120p!

@@cjenkins79 I am saying it is not entry-level because of the lens selection. This camera is for people who want to get tricked by business. It's like buying a 2-dollar printer, but the cartridges are 200 each, which need to be changed every three months and titled entry-level printer. When you can buy a 400 printer with cartridges costing 20 dollars and needs to be changed every year.
@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx Is an entry level buyer going to purchase a $200 prime f1.8 or an $800 24-70 f2.8? If you are buying a 24-70 then you clearly aren't an entry level buyer. Most entry level people are either getting the kit lens (which is why they sell them kits) or get a cheap prime. Most people buying a $1500 body don't have another $800. In your analogy the printer that has the $200 cartiges also has $20 cartriges that are perfectly fine for most people.
Bind the cripple hammer!!! Love the tech- I’ve been a Nikon shooter for 20 years and having recently picked up an EOS 7Dii and and 5D Classic for fun, I’m dipping my toes into the Canon space and really enjoying it. Looks like a fabulous camera- Great job Canon.
Cameras are affordable but not so much on RF lens side, they are selling cheap cameras but recovering it with overpriced lenses and banning 3rd party affordable lenses 😒😐 Will continue to wait for Sony Alpha A7C II
Canon has excellent cameras. But why have a budget camera if there is barely any option for fast budget lenses? In your case, the lens is almost twice as expensive as the camera. There are at least 7 50mm lenses with f1.4 or less for Sony, starting at something like 500€. So you can find the lens that fits your budget. For Canon, that's hard.
Yo great video! Canon now got the bodies on lock! They need to pattern their RFS lenses, I don’t mind the affordable repacked efm glass but release the fast RFS please
At this point, IMHO since Canon was late to the mirrorless party they are just filling up their EOS R camera system. Canon R8 seems to be a big brother to the R7 as entry-level hybrid offerings and with its tiny footprint this is more of an affordable 'gimbal camera'. Imagine slapping an RF 35 f1.8 with that RS3 mini and call it a day. My concern with this camera is the fact that it'll be lens heavy regardless if its native or adapted and the battery life. I'm predicting that after they filled up their lineup, mid-tier lenses will be next. Great video as always! You sir is such a unique photographer being Sony and Canon at the same time lol!
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas I think the Cripple hammer is to set price points that ensure that certain products don't compete with higher end. how about panasonic lumix s5 ii ? I know it's a little more expensive but is not this camera a better option just save a couple of dollars and go for it.
I'm glad Canon packed so much into this camera, the only deal breaker for me is the small battery size. I already have a bunch of the LP batteries and wouldn't want to carry around two sets.
Looks like Canon has a real contender here for the budget-PRO-mirrorless market! I'm quite impressed

Whatever you do, get a better model then this twig in the video

Did you eventually get the R8
Im here with you Bro - Had a T7i ... I got the R8 and I LOVE IT!
I still use my DSLR 20D with EF lenses, and its giving amazing photos.
My 1st DSLR - Nikon D100 (2002), 2003 EOS 10D. Got all 10D up to 50D, the 60D sucked, because 1) Plastic body 2) no 100% OVF 3) single card slot, so the D7000 featured all this into 2010, and more. :) Still, bought the 5D into 2006.
my first DSLR 10D in 2003 cost me $3000 😮
I still have it, owned/used almost all canon dslrs (2003 to 2015).
Sold everything but keeping my 10D 😂
Is manny joking about no cripple hammer? Crap battery is snough to turn pros off this.

Manny, the knowledge you drop is smooth. Don't worry about the outro. That's your magic. We feel you Bro🙌🏽

I'd say an r6 is still a way better photo camera then a r8 but I'd the price difference is that crazy I get ur r8 justification
Also just remember if your doing work for clients that dual card slot is a huge insurance policy and can save you the head ache if a card fails
You would be much happier with an r6. Don’t waste money on the r8
They make adapters
Word bro I was doing weddings with my Rp and EF glass and they were dope. I just sold it though to upgrade.
@@Battlem0nk Canon has plenty of stabilized lenses.
The Z 5 seems like the only budget full-frame camera with IBIS and a 2nd slot.
The S5 II is not much more expensive either.

@@Battlem0nk your lenses don't have IS?
Not to mention backward compatibility with all EF lenses, not only they work, they work even better, that's a HUGE money saving, adapter with the ring and you have all your old lenses working better and the ring just like RF lenses, it's sick!
That's a lot of a camera for $1500. I'm very impressed.
Рanasonic S5 II лучше

It is, but compared to ones like the Z5 it's not the best value. The only real shortcomings of the Z5 is the heavy 4k crop and slower AF (although not bad after firmware updates are applied). But it has what many of the other FF cameras have (IBIS and dual card slots) and is $100 cheaper than the R8.
@@HR-wd6cw I know about Z5, but with that 4k crop, Z50 is a better choice.

Yo! @ 6:00 thats Jared Polin! That fro made me look but his I shoot RAW shirt confirmed. So cool.
I just got my R8 for second camera event and I like it so much!
Highly anticipated! Coming from a Sony User
Same! I've been dying for 4k 60fps because I shoot a lot of videos clips for my gym but the a7siii is out of my budget.
Which is good R7-R8 camera for hybrid use and potrait
Apparently even with pretty fast action there’s little to no rolling shutter
its electronic first curtain which is not affected by rolling shutter
R8 weight is less.
it seems r7 has worse rolling shutter
My husband is about to buy this for me. I’m pretty excited
would be great to have a group portrait mode where the aperture and focus distance are set automatically to allow sharpness for all group portrait participants. Because often I increase my aperture like I take landscape photography so I make sure everyone is in focus, but then I have to overly increase my ISO. Is that just me? (knowing that I'm an advance beginner at photography)
That is actually a very good, practical idea!
There is such a mode on the R7, so I imagine it’s on the R8.
@@bryanbuff oh yeah? i never seen a review talking about? do you know how is it called?
They have that on the R6 mk ii so I’m assuming it would be on the R8 but it’s one of the auto plus modes so lots of pro’s probably wouldn’t use it. I imagine that’s why they don’t mention it in reviews
Also I could be wrong but I believe it automatically focus stacks for the group portraits
How does the 3rd party lens ban work with manual lens, because I only use those?
@@cineffect Manual focus 3rd party lenses are the only RF third party lenses that are still allowed to be made
@@chingymofo1 Well there are adapters, like FD to RF, which make it possible to use FD lenses on RF mount. Adapters also exist for MD and M42 lenses.
Why not get the EF to RF adapter and get EF lenses?

Hey Manny,
The original R6 (not mk2) is pretty much the same price as this R8 now here in the UK.
Cheers :)
Get the r6
@@lapindefou2056 if you are worried about weight and size I would just buy a tiny point and shoot camera, probably a fuji.

Peace D@vid
sony ergonomics are so much worse though. but canon's 1.2s prices are a dilemma ugh
It seems like RP mark‼️ and it's gonna be my next camera for sure.
Thank you Manny for the effort you have given into this video. Learned much.
The R6 and RP cameras are, feel and look (and weight) very different.
@@christiandiegoalcocer yeah I’m aware, I was mainly referring to the dials. 🙂

Hey, have you checked out the «Tornado EOS» utility program for Canon? Give it a go, it's pretty neat.

@@jjchockey Canons RF lenses are better than the sony offerings. Eg, my RF 85mm f1.2 cannot be beat. Or my RF100-500 I have on my lap tight now... magic iq and af.

I’d like to hear an example of Canon using the cripple hammer on other releases and tell me how the cripple hammer on the R8 isn’t just as bad or worse

i've been subscribing you since my 1st digicam camera because your review is in each camera is perfect and accurate thanks for the review.
Can we start giving Nikon credit for the subject switching? It’s been in there with their eye af since the first Z6
Question for the people in here, i have a Canon M50 currently and i've been thinking about upgrading for some time and the canon R8 looks like the best option but i dont want to abandon the lenses i have
Is there an adapter or something i could use to change the mount type?
Yess there's an Adapter, moving from the M50 to the R8 is definitely a great upgrade and I think you should go for it, you won't regret it
Sadly, it is not possible to adapt EF-M lenses.
It would require a special adapter with a lens to compensate for the extra flange distance.
Love the outro authenticity 😂
And pare with the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 S is like $1,800
Yep. The Z5 also has a better EVF, an actual mechanical shutter that goes to 1/8000s, a full sized battery and its weather sealed for $200 less.
Yea Fuji IMO is the ultimate all rounder best bang for your buck ecosystem. They not the best at all features but adequately good with everything.
24 mp for birds etc is really not useable in most scenarios and is a way bigger loss than having ibis (which you made it sound like it was a loss) lol
Not only that, it has a mechanical shutter as well and yes, the ibis is useless (in most cases) when capturing stills in speed (which wasn’t what I was talking about) but in video or to capture movement, it’s the only way.
As an ambassador for Sony and former Canon, I think I’m pretty up to date about the cameras as I get early access to most cameras and lenses.
Not to mention my 20+ years as a professional photographer.
R8 ftw!
That's a lot of a camera for $1500. I'm very impressed.
Pity they don't match it to some lenses of the same price point.
There are some very affordable Canon RF lenses.
There still need to be a few more.
It is also easy to adapt cheap EF lenses.
@@robertm3951 Why should someone buy old EF glass? That's very customer unfriendly and what about new buyers into the system? Is this the innovative way of Canon? Nikon has done a better job with high quality but affordable lenses. The f/1.8 primes are at Zeiss Otus level without costing and arm and leg.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas Lenses do not go bad with age. I am not defending Canon but buying native lenses just to have the newest and the latest is a waste of money.
Was waiting for this video from you!
Where is the RF 35mm 1.4 L lens?
And the RF 24 L
The Rise of Canon
@@WillTung if you really consider 300 grams lighter and 1cm shorter more compact....makes no difference. 300 grams is less than a can of soda lol
Jared and Stephen looking fly. 😎
Thank you, Manny! Much appreciated! This could be my first mirrorless. :D
Nobody wants to go out of business, except Olympus lol
@@remdell I agree but don't agree. Remember the a7c is the exact same as the a7iii but w/ updated color science, catalyst browse etc. If they stick with the same model they will give us an a7iv with a smaller EVF and updated features for less money. With sony's lens selection being cheaper than RF glass and more 3rd party options than Canon this would make Sony a better buy for beginners. But hey lets keep the battle going so we can get nicer gear
@@JamesDBuzzard Sony is ALREADY a better buy for just beginners.... and literally everyone else.
I shoot with EFC on my r5 and r6 and never seen banding with flash
No HSS is a dealbreaker.
@@MrIkarphoto Do you use electronic shutter with HSS?
@@reynaldomomtas no. Thanks for info.
It does have mechanical shutter with 6 frames per sec
That battery will be a real bummer if anyone is coming from an older Canon that uses the LP E6 battery.
Canon R8 destroyed Z5 in all aspects,. not even closed,.
@@kenjiyamamoto423 yeah especially in file redundancy, image stabilization, studio work, rolling shutter, battery life, EVF , shooting in harsh conditions , 3rd party lens options, nice AF joystick , build quality. Should I carry on?
excellent video!! between the r8 vs a6700 or a7cii for video, which would be better?
By canon not allowing third party lens to be used with their camera, makes the new R8 too expensive for me. I could get A7siii with a Tamron 17-28 cheaper than an R8 with 16-35mm and have 4k120p!
Or you could get the R8 with 16 and 24 prime for half the price.
@@cjenkins79 Primes for video talk about artistic restrictions. I can't give up 18, 20, 24, 28mm. Primes over 4k 120p and more zoom ranges, okay sure.
@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx Again your argument is from someone who this camera isn't aimed at. It's and ENTRY level full frame camera at $1500. Most people spending $1500 aren't going to get even a budget 24-70.
They are going to pick this up at $1500 and either get the kit lense or grab cheap prime and be out the door at $1800.
Where else are going to get full frame, f1.8, 4k60 no crop for $1800?

This camera is crippled beyond belief
Have you looked at the Nikon Z5? It offers IBIS, Joystick, second card slot, better battery.
How so crippled?@@Yupthereitism
Cameras are affordable but not so much on RF lens side, they are selling cheap cameras but recovering it with overpriced lenses and banning 3rd party affordable lenses 😒😐 Will continue to wait for Sony Alpha A7C II
Seriously considering upgrading from the RP to R8 at this point. I love the formfactor of the RP
You can still adapt EF mount lenses to the RP. I assume you should still be able to adapt them to these new models.
I am sure they will release some 1.4 lenses sooner or later. But yes, for the moment there is not so much choice

Just bought one! Can’t wait to try it out.
In find that the Cripple hammer hit this one hard, electronic shutter only? Small battery, no ibis, single card slot
Canon has really learned how to use the cripple hammer against potential customers. I'm glad not to be a Canon customer.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas I think the Cripple hammer is to set price points that ensure that certain products don't compete with higher end. I also believe that Canon doesn't include anything half assed so what may see like a cripple hammer is Canon not settling for anything better than the best.
Maybe
how about panasonic lumix s5 ii ? I know it's a little more expensive but is not this camera a better option just save a couple of dollars and go for it.
I'm glad Canon packed so much into this camera, the only deal breaker for me is the small battery size. I already have a bunch of the LP batteries and wouldn't want to carry around two sets.
Not for me take extra batterys that simple. Think about the price of the camera you cant have everything that is just the way it is
