PLEASE HELP ME! Im a 20 year old guy just getting more into photography/videography(I shoot photos/videos both, I shoot portraits, candids for brands, etc) I currently have Canon M6 mii with a 16mm and 50mm ef and im really confused between r6mii and r8. I own both, with the R8 being a second body. On the whole the R8 does great. For me the one instance when it is noticeably inferior to the R6ii is shooting sports in some halls or gyms with poor, flickering lights. For the R6ii I can usually put it in mechanical shutter and take a drop in frame rate to 12FPS (which I think is usually fine) and continue no problem. But for the R8 I need to put it into electronic first curtain, which drops it to 6FPS (too slow for me). But that might not be enough to fix the problem, so I need to turn on anti-flicker which can make the camera lag a bit between pressing the shutter and it taking the shot. Shooting sports with a lagging 6FPS isn't recommended, but it is only occasionally I hit a venue with such bad lighting. My other minor annoyance with the R8 is that I can't customize the filenames it produces. I like to set that on all my cameras so I can tell at a glance what camera took the shot: R6iixxxx or R5Cxxxx etc, but the R8 files are all IMGxxxx and I can't change that. Bugs me more than it should. All the other differences are non issues for me. Small body, no Ibis, no joystick or wheel, small battery. None of these are negatives for me.
I own the r8 and I never ever regretted my decision. Since i am a hobby photographer, all the extra or pro features on the r6ii do not justify an extra thousand euro for me. I think I own the best possible non pro camera on the market :)

Saved up. Did the research. Went from being mocked and ridiculed for my T5i. To now my R6 mark ii. Love it. As my customers, family, and friends say it's like I have a camera than can keep up with me finally. It's worth the extra.
@tinyhomeliving2024 I mostly agree with this. However the difference from R6 MKII vs t5i is so huge. The t5i couldn't handle low light or most things and I was hobby shooting. Now I shoot professionally and the R6 MKII pushes me to be better, learn more, and practice more.
@tomd4748 had a budget and did the comparison and figured if I'm going to go pro make sure I'm good for a long time and can do whatever I need or want. And that was a huge jump but it's pushed me so much. I love it!
In the past I owned a used Canon 5D Mark II, and Mark III. Both those camera's are full frame. Today I use a Canon R100 (that I bought new). I miss full frame sensor. The R100 is a crop sensor. The R100 takes great photos paired with my EF mount f2.8 70-200mm lens that I use an EF to RF adaptor. I don't like that I have to multiply 1.6 x the focal length of the lens to get the accurate focal length of the crop sensor camera. I like that I can get wider with the full frame sensor. In the future I might save up for a full frame camera but for now I am a hobby photographer, that mainly shoots flower, foliage, and sky photos.
Getting back into photography, I was waiting for the R5 mkII. Getting tired of waiting I bought the R8 with the 100 2.8 macro. I bought a second R8 and the 14-35. Now I have two cameras with two lenses that do all I want (macro and landscape) without switching lenses ever in a travel friendly size and weight. That's a thing the R8 does much better then anything else due to it's weight, size and price.
Have both... I do architecture photography and got the R8 as a "Backup" camera. After editing mi first shoot with the R8, I immediately realized what a gem it is.... For architecture photography the R8 is by far bests value. I didn't miss the IBIS because I always use a tripod. The only downside I noticed is that the viewfinder is smaller than the R6s. Considering the price, dynamic range, colors, AF... the R8 is an awesome little camera.
Well, I had R8 and bought it with extra battery. I still love that camera, small, light and with a lot of power. After a year, I switched to r6ii, and I miss some of possibilities from r8, but ibis, battery, extra slot does the job. As Anthony said, r8 as a second, light backup camera, is option worth to consider! Gr8 video btw 👍
I use both of them for work. I actually enjoy the R8 more, especially when shooting casual photography. The R62 I use mainly for video. I use them both with small rig cages. The R8 handles a lot better when you attach a cage.
Got my R8 at Pro Fusion just before meeting you. Absolutley love it minus the overheating at 4k60 but ive learned to work with it so its not too bad if im not recording too long

Almost a year ago I got myself the R8 with the 24-105 f4 L (which is usually the kit lens for the R6II) The only disadvantages are maybe the missing IBIS, but ok just get a tripod for long exposures or brace the camera, and for sure the smaller battery. It's not that the smaller size bothers me (although I have to switch them out quite often) but the availability for third party accessories is not as big. For instance the Tricharge, which many of you might have heard about is right now only available for the bigger LP-E6 and not the LP-E17 batteries. Also the smaller batteries have no official battery grip from Canon themselves.
I have the R8, it has its cons but overall its a beast of a little camera. :) Using it for 4K video and photos along with my EOS R. (Hope to get a new R5 MKII soon) Good video Anthony!
I am so close to buying the R8. Someone at a camera shop told me I should consider buying Sony a7iii because Canon rf lenses are expensive and it got me thinking tbh. However, I am moving to the R8 from an eos 250D , the R8 would become my main, and the 250D a backup or second camera if I need it for videos.Switching to Sony would mean switching my entire lens kit to Sony and it's just something I cannot do ( financial reasons obviously) . Also , I think, moving from an eos 250D to the R8 is a BIG improvement.
@georem I have the R8 for about a week and I love it. There is so much potential to this camera but I paired with a 50mm EF and an adapter, portraits look great so far. And the batteries of the r8 are the same with the ones from my 250d so I don't have to buy others, that's great 😁😁
i am a Sony shooter myself, sorry Anthony. But my gf wanted a camera too so after doing some research I suggested her the canon R8. seeing this video I am sure it was a good choice for the future being. great sensor great quality. and as it is her first camera she doesn't need all the slightly more professional form factor. great video btw.
I have the R8 but I'm looking at upgrading to the R6MKII because the lack of a joystick and spinwheel is driving me insane. Plus the batteries are just too small in the R8, even though it's not that difficult to switch them, it's still really annoying that they run out so quickly. I have big hands too so my entire little finger can't grip the R8 body, it's frustrating. I've come from a 7D (MK1!!) and although the R8 is small, it's driving me slightly mad.
The point you made about the different shutter types is significant, also the battery size. Have you seen the cost of the batteries!! I think it’s a perfect 2nd body or starter pro camera but I reckon the 6-2 is worth pushing for if you are already earning money from the cameras and are in the pro realm.
I absolutely love my R8, it’s been an absolute champ! I love the small size especially as someone with small hands (all my fingers fit on the grip) I love ibis on my mothers 6mii but I’m fine with what’s left after stabilizing in post for the price difference. If you don’t have the money for the r6ii you will be more than happy with the R8 if you can chew off the things canon crippled to get the price what it is
You must have a very small hand. I'm used like to EOS 5 and EOS 5D and hated the small size of grip on R8. But the grip for Canon RP fits so it fixes my biggest problems with R8.
we have the R8 and absolutely love it! It is such a tiny beast, I do wish the battery lasted longer but we still pick up this camera over an R5 sometimes just due to the smaller size. PS I am pumped for your review of the 35mm, I used it for jobs and personal videos and loved it. The photos on it were nice too, yeah there are some drawbacks but none that couldn't be dealt with. Can't wait!
running both R8 and R6mkii The R8 is mainly on gimbal for video clips due to the weight advantage (my rig). R6mkii mainly for photos (my wifes A camera). Wish the R8 was using the bigger battery that the R6mkii uses. Wish the R8 had better heat dissipation. Wish the R6mkii was lighter and cheaper. Gotta have both!
I Chose the R8. Love the image quality, however, there a several things that are missing if you are a seasoned video and/or photography shooter. If you're newbie, you will not notice these missing features. I wanted to upgrade my camera system from my 5D Mark IV's to something with 4k60, at least 2hr+ run time, & no cropped 4k. The R8 met those specs, however, I quickly noticed other things that demonstrated that the R8 is definitely not a camera for seasoned professionals. It wasn't a deal breaker for me so I purchased 2 of them because the price was so sweet ($1,050 ea. new). I'll see how long I can go before I start to need those missing features. Ultimately, I'm looking at getting one R5MII and keeping the two R8's that I purchased. For starters, there are a few missing features when connecting a monitor via HDMI. Hey, for the price, I really can't complain at all.
Honesty the touch and drag focus on the R8 is way more precise than the joystick on the r6. The R6 joystick is really “blocky” where you can’t precisely aim the focus where you want to and sometimes moving it diagonally gets dificult.
I honestly thought the R6ii would be difficult to hold since the body is so large in my hands, I have extremely small hands being a tiny Asian female but it surprised me. It’s super comfortable to hold! I have a R50 as well which was my first camera and it’s tiny in comparison that’s why I thought I would have trouble with R6ii but honestly I prefer the grip and feel of the R6ii now. The ibis was what made me choose R6ii instead of R8, I can shoot 1s shutter speed without tripod, I want to carry minimal gear. Not only that but many places with viewing platforms or crowded places won’t allow tripods.
I would have gone with the R8 if it at least uses the LPE6NH battery, the same as my R7. To use in conjunction with each other; my R7 for wildlife and birding, R8 for indoor and lowlight.
I own both R62 and R8, both are excellent camera. Being using R8 as my B-cam, I also love to bring my R8 as my travel cam. Reserve R62 for more serious work.
In your video for the 35mm VCM L lens, you should do an in-depth comparison between 35mm f1.8 stm prime. Really curious if L glass justifies spending the $1500 for it.
Which of the following 2 options you think is a better choice for a first time camera buyer? CANON EOS R6 mark ii + RF 24-105 mm f/4-7.1 IS STM VS CANON EOS R8 + RF 24-105 mm f/4 IS USM Trying to stay in this budget! Thanks
Thanks for the information you mentioned about the camera, very good review! R8 is actually expensive for those limitations, I'd rather go for R10 if wanted to save, but R6 is really good. Just requiring external recorder for shooting with RAW (CRM) format is the disadvantage with R6
I have been using the R8 for over a year now. don't have the comparison to the R6 II, but I am really happy with the R8 so far. Battery life is an issue - but I am constantly carrying 4 batteries. Single SD slot hasn't been an issue yet for me. So I'd agree that the R8 is fantastic value. The no ibis - yeah, I didn't have a camera with IBIS before, so I can't really compare.
I think it boils down to use case scenarios to decide between them. I’m not a professional but I love my R8. You definitely need to get extra batteries if you get one. If you plan to shoot video, you need to get a gimbal.
I currently have a bmpcc4k and zve10. i decided i want to sell my zve10 and go all canon and get the R8 and commit to full frame, and build my lens collection before later jumping to the R5C when the price drop a little . I’m really coming for the c80 but not anytime soon.
I own the Canon R8 and it is good. But after a distance, the AF does not work. Maybe it is the same in R6ii but previously I owned R10 and it has quite more AF working distance. For studio work and portraits, it is superb. But Canon needs more lenses to attract more people here. The R8 is nearly unusable in wildlife or bird photography. R8 is good if Canon offers more budget lenses like Nikon 28-75mm F2.8 with Image stabilization on a budget. The RF24-105 F4 must be offered with R8 at a lower price together. Or it can be a combo offer.
The R6 II was the most underrated camera of the last couple years. It's the best camera in it's class (until probably the z6III just finally came out, though that has worse AF) and probably the best Canon camera to date outside of the R3. The R8 gets way more in the way of press time and reviews which is odd because it is a much lesser camera. It didn't even get proper reviews by most Canon ambassadors (even Pete Mck) and was completely ignored by DXOmark who DID put out sensor tests for the R8 but NOT the R6 II... even IF they are the same sensor that is odd because DXO puts out reviews for ALL cameras that share same sensors from the Sony and Nikon lineups (and we've been told things like "it has the same sensor" before with the 5DIV and R yet those cams have different IQ as the 5D was better (I've owned both)).
I haven't moved to Mirrorless yet but I am by the end of the year! I have a Canon 6D Mark 2. Should I start out with the R8 since I've never shot with a mirrorless camera or go to the R6 Mark 2?
hello I currently own the R8. I do some travel photography and casual all around photography. I was thinking of upgrading to the r6mrk2. is it worth it ? please advice
good video, you labelled the R8 and r6mii wrong at one point in the video. and I went with r6mii and this camera is limited only by my ability to use it
even they say same but still have a little milisec difference from AF ,Speed, Quality ..Sharpness etc.. can't wait to see the R6 Mark III.. hope has top display like the ® and 30MP New Sensor .hehe much better dynamic range much better files and image quality .
Hi Antony ive been ask to film a full boxing event.. but I normaly do photography. My Canon r6 MKii (and a r6 mk1) has ofcourse a video function. But is it good enough you think? Or possible with this camera?
@Anthony Gugliotta I'm looking to get something that records 4k 60fps and has better quality than iphone 12, any suggestions? Small form factor would be nice, GoPro and DJI Pocket video quality looks just as bad as iphone 12.
Canon needs mid range lenses like Lumix 1.8 primes or Nikon 1.8 or 1.4. Canon lenses are the most expensive compared to other brands. Those stm motor canon lenses are buzzy no other mfg in todays camera industry even uses stm lenses like that.
I use a canon m50 ii on a gimbal to film wedding events with my brother. But I would like buy my own equipment to help him with better quality videos and also to film real estate (since I’m a real estate agent). The problem that I have it’s that I have very shaky hands and even with a gimbal the footage looks a little shaky. What Camera should I get ??
I got the r8, as a second body (r6 mi being my main camera) and is a great camera, I do agree about the battery sometimes but is not a dealbreaker. And for your finger just get a small grip and problem fixed 😅😅 I think this camera can offer professional results for an excellent price. At the end both are great cameras you can’t go wrong with either of them
Is there anything I missed about the R8 and R6ii?

@georem I have the R8 for about a week and I love it. There is so much potential to this camera but I paired with a 50mm EF and an adapter, portraits look great so far. And the batteries of the r8 are the same with the ones from my 250d so I don't have to buy others, that's great 😁😁
last year i got R8, it been great so far
i am a Sony shooter myself, sorry Anthony.
R8 with 28mm lens is pure love 😍
The point you made about the different shutter types is significant, also the battery size. Have you seen the cost of the batteries!! I think it’s a perfect 2nd body or starter pro camera but I reckon the 6-2 is worth pushing for if you are already earning money from the cameras and are in the pro realm.
Ooh nice video! I got the R6mkii and my friend got the R8
I have R8 from a few months, Its very nice camera I use it for birding with good results and it has hack for cover a matrix so it's not big problem.
Can't wait!
Have the R8 love it. Woodworking videos
running both R8 and R6mkii
The R8 is mainly on gimbal for video clips due to the weight advantage (my rig). R6mkii mainly for photos (my wifes A camera). Wish the R8 was using the bigger battery that the R6mkii uses. Wish the R8 had better heat dissipation. Wish the R6mkii was lighter and cheaper. Gotta have both!
Question, would it be wiser to go with the R8 and buy a better lens with the money saved, or get the R6 mii and wait for a better lens?
I own R8 and it's phenomenal! But since I get paid for my photography, I really wish it has bigger battery and a second SD card slot!
Tomorrow the R5II will be presented. I'm so excited.😄
Coming from an old Canon M6 mk1: Is the R8 small enough to be in the same league as the M6? I really want a small camera.
In your video for the 35mm VCM L lens, you should do an in-depth comparison between 35mm f1.8 stm prime. Really curious if L glass justifies spending the $1500 for it.
Which of the following 2 options you think is a better choice for a first time camera buyer?
CANON EOS R6 mark ii + RF 24-105 mm f/4-7.1 IS STM
VS
CANON EOS R8 + RF 24-105 mm f/4 IS USM
Trying to stay in this budget!
Thanks
Good video and although I only have the 250D/SL3, this is still something interesting to watch.
Me too
Thanks for the information you mentioned about the camera, very good review!
R8 is actually expensive for those limitations, I'd rather go for R10 if wanted to save, but R6 is really good. Just requiring external recorder for shooting with RAW (CRM) format is the disadvantage with R6
Difference between the R6MII and R8 in low light situations?
Bought an r8 a couple months back I definitely have to start using it a bit more!
Compared to my Canon F1 film camera the R8 is great. I use a tripod so don't need IBIS. So many whiners about the R8 but never any cheese.
Honestly the only thing I don't like about the R8 is the battery life.
Do you still do the mentorship that’s listen on your website?
Saving for the r6 ii now
In the U.K they are the same price at the moment and sometimes the r6 mark ii is cheaper,
How about the R or RP?
I want camera for travel photography and portrait only...no video shooting..rp is enough for me or should I get for r8?
Can I get a lens pls
I currently have a bmpcc4k and zve10. i decided i want to sell my zve10 and go all canon and get the R8 and commit to full frame, and build my lens collection before later jumping to the R5C when the price drop a little . I’m really coming for the c80 but not anytime soon.
You'll still catch me enjoying this video even though I own both
I own the Canon R8 and it is good.
I use canon R 8 for birds in flight, 50-70 meters is not a problem for a small bird
Love my R6ii great camera
Which is more worth it for the price, the r50 or r100
The R50. It is very worth it to get the newer processor for autofocus.
Can you compare R6 and R8 ? Thank you so much ! I
Which lenses would you advise for influencers to use with R6 markii for fashion videos and pictures
hello
I currently own the R8.
I do some travel photography and casual all around photography. I was thinking of upgrading to the r6mrk2.
is it worth it ? please advice
Ive both, R6ii as main and R8 as back up.
5:22 the camera labels are wrong the first one is the R6ii and the second one is the R8
You are correct! Thanks for spotting
@@AnthonyGugliottaThank you for all of the things you've taught me in my photography journey.
good video, you labelled the R8 and r6mii wrong at one point in the video. and I went with r6mii and this camera is limited only by my ability to use it
with what is recorded that? a lumix? the focus is jumping all the time ...
even they say same but still have a little milisec difference from AF ,Speed, Quality ..Sharpness etc.. can't wait to see the R6 Mark III.. hope has top display like the ® and 30MP New Sensor .hehe much better dynamic range much better files and image quality .
I have the Canon R8, I would like to record at 12fps in 4k but it only reaches 60fps. Do you know if they will open that menu in time? Thanks friend
What about the EOS R? Is a relevant upgrade to R6ii?
the R is a worse version of both
The Canon EOS R is still a very good camera, in the right hands and the correct application . Best wishes , Richard .
@@richardjones1118 yeah it’s a good camera. but not an upgrade to the R6ii
How do I get this white cedar Lightroom preset ??
we can install canon r8 can move af area like joystick of canon r6 inside setting by 4 arrow keys
10/10 content bro… love your videos!
Hi Antony ive been ask to film a full boxing event.. but I normaly do photography. My Canon r6 MKii (and a r6 mk1) has ofcourse a video function. But is it good enough you think? Or possible with this camera?
11:33 The R8 only has one card slot? What's that other slot down there for? Looks like a micro SD would be able to fit there
@Anthony Gugliotta I'm looking to get something that records 4k 60fps and has better quality than iphone 12, any suggestions? Small form factor would be nice, GoPro and DJI Pocket video quality looks just as bad as iphone 12.
Canon needs mid range lenses like Lumix 1.8 primes or Nikon 1.8 or 1.4. Canon lenses are the most expensive compared to other brands. Those stm motor canon lenses are buzzy no other mfg in todays camera industry even uses stm lenses like that.
At 5:22 the cameras are the wrong way around
... trust no photographer who takes pictures via a little screen on camera backs!
Train more , there is no perfectly stable video
Tried the R8 for 3 months and ended UP buying the R6 Mark II.
There’s no comparison really.
Dolchi please also talk about Panasonic...
Mechanical shutter is must have for me
For some it will be a deal breaker
sony a7iii vs canon r8 ?
No joystick on the R8 yet the R10 has it? Sometimes the choice of what is excluded is a little strange, Canon.
R8 is the bottom of the barrel ff , r10 is 2 ladder up , what did you expecy
Yea right , R8 is way better @@JJARCHIE
@@kenduejones never said it wasnt
I got the r8, as a second body (r6 mi being my main camera) and is a great camera, I do agree about the battery sometimes but is not a dealbreaker. And for your finger just get a small grip and problem fixed 😅😅
I think this camera can offer professional results for an excellent price. At the end both are great cameras you can’t go wrong with either of them
