@@AnthonyGugliotta same here. I got both with my R6 II at the end of November, such a good duo. I posted an awesome shot I took with the 24-105 a few hours ago, it’s sooooo good.
Good to see someone mention the focus limiter on the 85F2. That lens gets a lot of negative comments about slow focus but the focus switch makes a bigger difference with that lens than any other I've used. My go-to for most weddings is the 85F2 and 351.8. Great video.
Great combo, and agreed! It's absolutely necessary to use the focus control. Get those macro shots of rings when you need em, but then flip the switch and shoot the couple from the far aisle during the ceremony! :)
The 85 f2 is my go to walk around lens. It’s like, creates a nice bokeh and just enough reach to get in on further away subjects for street photography.
This is great - for a full frame body. Everything shifts a big w/ the APS-C bodies. The 50 mm becomes the 85 equivalent, the 24 becomes that 35 mm, etc.
In the Canon world, the best value right now IMO is an R6 mark I paired with a 24-105 f4L, 16 2.8, and 50 1.8. Better if you can get these second hand. Use the 24-105 most of the time; the R6 low light is fantastic and shooting at F4 is no problem except in the darkest of environments. Use the 16 when you really need ultra wide coverage. Use 50 for low-light and shallow DOF portraits. This whole kit can cover pretty much all situations except professional sports/birding, while maintaining a very low size/weight profile.
Excellent review. My only disagreement is regarding your quick dismissal of the 24-105 4-7.1 STM. Yes, it’s variable aperture and not weather sealed but there is virtually no difference in image quality from the RF 24-104 f/4 L IS. I’ve done many, many comparisons on the occasions where I’ve had both . Try it.
I’d also like to add the RF 100-400 f5.6-8. For an inexpensive telephoto the results are nice and it’s fast enough to track small wildlife like birds and shoot sports.. suffers a bit in low light but with the right light it’s great!
great tip - I went with the 70-200 F4 (another great option) but have tried the 100-400 and been very impressed with the image quality, especially considering it is half the price of the 70-200
When I brought my Canon R8 I immediately purchased the RF 24mm, 35mm and 85mm macro lenses as I do landscape photography but I also like shooting photos of plants, flowers, insects etc so I appreciated the close focusing and macro capabilities. I also brought the 24-105 F4 thinking I would benefit from also having a zoom lens to cover everything in between plus a bit of extra reach, but I ended up returning it as it's simply not as sharp as the non-L prime lenses despite it costing 3 times as much as one of those lenses. So I brought the 70-200 F4 instead and I find that to be a truly excellent lens which pairs really well with the wider focal length primes. With the 70mm at the wide end it also covers the gap between my 35mm and 85mm nicely and doesn't compromise on image quality.
@@Stan_the_Belgian The RF 70-200 f4 and 85 f2 are equally as sharp. It’s hard to tell them apart. If you want more bokeh with the 70-200 you can shoot at a longer focal length so it looks more like an f2. It’s a more versatile lens with L series build quality but it costs a lot more.
Recently got a rf 28 f2.8 pancake lens and it is really surprisingly sharp and something about 28 feels really good to shoot with. Definitely would recommend you look into it.

I do have expensive glass and won’t deny that it’s “better”, but when I want small, light, and better than good enough, the non-L RF glass is awesome. RF 16/35/85 paired with an OG R body is my go to for travel.
I love the Assertor as it gives off that feeling of an actual battleship with it being covered in gun battery clusters and the layered guns on the superstructure of the ship, I can just picture this ship moving into a group of smaller ships and just wrecking them with overwhelming fire from every angle as both port and ventral sides are almost equally armed.

If the price is right I'd say go for it! I shot with an old EF 24-105 (non-L) on crop DSLR for a season. My only regret was not having enough on the wide end, but I was primarily shooting subjects that were far away so it worked for me.
The image quality, focus speed and build quality of the EF 24-105 L ( I have the mark ii) are very good. The only negative is the size is a bit long once the adapter is added.

I wanna get the 50mm because of it's low light capaabilities. However, I will be using it for film making. I don't mind it having no stabilization since my camera does hav In body stabilization. would you recommend this? i'm using an APSC sensor as well so It's gonna get cropped. I wanted to go for the 35mm but its alot more expensive than the noifty fifty.
Can someone help me decide between the R7 and the R8? Mostly going to be doing street photography and family / vacation use? And no, I can’t save up for the R6 II with a $21K lens lol
Urgh still tempted by Red Ring but even for EF adapted its still very expensive! Working towards two camera body with probably the 85 and 35. Oh and anyone have any thoughts on the RF28mm pancake?
Hello Anthony, Great and informative video, please I would really appreciate it if you read my comment and reply. I do cooking videos and I would like to find Sony camera lens that is able to take 4k image to a cooking pan from about a meter away to avoid the heat and the splashing oil but at the same time to be able to zoom very close to get a micro image to the ingredients. I would really appreciate your help.
I shot nothing but film until a few years ago. I have a used R6 and a new R8. I have the 24-105 f4L which stays on my R6 most of the time. The R8 I switch lenses quite often. I have the 16 f1.8, 50 f1.8 I recently bought a used 100-400 EF 4.5-5.6L USM IS. The 16 and 50 are excellent lenses if you want to do more post-work. I still use my Mamiya RB67 medium format camera. It will be a long time if, ever I will be able to afford a medium format digital camera. I do not shoot professionally anymore I am getting ready to retire and might dip my toe back in when I have more time. The review of all of these lenses are spot on. Just buy the body and get one or two of these lenses and you will be happy. I will back up what he says about the 24-105 f4-7.1 kit lens do not waste your money on it.
@@tallpinoy RF lenses are also smaller in use due to the absence of the EF-RF adapter. Smaller bags can be used allowing for smaller and lighter setup. IQ wise, RF 24-105mm only has a slight edge over the EF. My motivation for upgrading to the RF lenses is not primarily about IQ but size, weight, and ergonomics. As regards the 50mm, it becomes necessarily large to bring along due to the adapter. I have the RF50mm and I can carry it all the time. Though I prefer the rendering of my Tamron 45mm F1.8, however it weighs a lot, so I don't bring it often as a result. If you have no RF lenses, the adapter is an non issue since it lives on the camera. But if you have several EF lenses and RF lenses in use, switching lenses WILL become annoying. BTW, I also have both EF24-105mm mark I and II as well as the EF 50mm F1.8.
Need? Absolutely not. They will work just fine with the adapters. I wouldn’t bother replacing lower end (but still good) glass with more low end glass. Keep that stuff, and save for a real upgrade.
I'm actually trying to save up for the 24-70 (or maybe the 24-105) f2.8 for my R7, as I already got myself an older EF 70-200 F2.8L version 1 non-IS. If you are on a budget, then check out the EF versions of the RF lenses mention by Anthony
Exactly whats the Point in presenting all Budget rf lenses one by one? For some of the prices you get EF 50 1.2 L or even EF 85 1.2 L used
Hi Anthony, i was trying to buy your presets pack but i can´t put in my card.
Hey im looking for a reliable hight quality lens for vertical video specifically reels for a social media content job i own the 50mm f1.2 prime but looking for something wider which one would you recommend im using a canon r50 btw i know not the best 😅 looking to upgrade my body in the future
What do you think about using an ef l series lens like the old 24-105 f4 on your R series body?
If the price is right I'd say go for it! I shot with an old EF 24-105 (non-L) on crop DSLR for a season. My only regret was not having enough on the wide end, but I was primarily shooting subjects that were far away so it worked for me.
The image quality, focus speed and build quality of the EF 24-105 L ( I have the mark ii) are very good. The only negative is the size is a bit long once the adapter is added.
Excellent! Thanks man🤘🏽
hello i have a cannon vixia RF80 and i shoot myself talking.. religious educational videos... 10 ft away and need a lens to get waist up.. im 6'3" also i can only get chest up right now using a 0.43 lens....Please any help !!! Im old and this is very difficult for me lol....thank you
I wanna get the 50mm because of it's low light capaabilities. However, I will be using it for film making. I don't mind it having no stabilization since my camera does hav In body stabilization. would you recommend this? i'm using an APSC sensor as well so It's gonna get cropped. I wanted to go for the 35mm but its alot more expensive than the noifty fifty.
How about the RF 28mm f2.8 pancake? Cheaper than the 24 or 35 and supposedly very good indeed according to reviews.
50mm camera drop transition = chefs kiss
isn’t the focus distance measured from the sensor?
Can someone help me decide between the R7 and the R8? Mostly going to be doing street photography and family / vacation use?
And no, I can’t save up for the R6 II with a $21K lens lol
Urgh still tempted by Red Ring but even for EF adapted its still very expensive! Working towards two camera body with probably the 85 and 35. Oh and anyone have any thoughts on the RF28mm pancake?
Highly recommend the EF 85 f/1.2 L mark I. A bit slow on the focus but an image rendering like nothing else for portraits.
@@mariopassalacqua6674 Hmm I already got the EF 85 F1.4L
Surprised you didn't mention the 1.6x magnification factor for APS-C sensors
I shoot with a 70d I’m in Europe and my kit lens just broke f3.5-5.6 so I’m stuck shooting with my 24 mm f2.8
The focussing distance is measured from the sensor not the front of the lens
What about 18 to 150 mm lens on canon R 10
Anthony, you’re also in the Tdot? Nice 👌
can you ask canon to allow 3rd party lenses?
If I have the ef 24-105 mm f4 and the ef 50 mm f1.8, do I need the rf versions?
Yes if you want a lighter and compact setup.
@mirasga other than weight, are there any other advantages like image quality wise?
You missed the 28 pancake. Unbeatable value. A dream for street on the R8.
My favorite lens the 85mm but EF
I just got the Canon RF 35mm macro lens for my birthday and I have the canon R7 so the 35 becomes 56 so it's basically a nifty fifty with macro
And of course if you don't need f1.8, you could always get the RF 28mm f2.8 pancake instead of the 24 and 35
What about the Nikon d50
What about the Nikon D50 ???????
Big fan sir ❤
Will those lens fit on my EOS R50?
I'm actually trying to save up for the 24-70 (or maybe the 24-105) f2.8 for my R7, as I already got myself an older EF 70-200 F2.8L version 1 non-IS. And I gotta say, I love the photos out of that oldie. It's just even at 70, sometimes it's too tight. But to my surprise, I came back from Cuba with pretty good shots from my newly minted RFS 10-18mm 4.5-6.3 variable aperture.
28mm??
OMG!!!!! the micro heart attack every time he drops the lenses
Don't watch until the end then...
That lens seems nice, Lemme check the price, WOAH
Talk about 24-105f2
Do you mean the f2.8?
I have all those lenses and love them all. The quality is amazing 🫶
what about lenses under 200? worth the money or naah
50mm or 24mm pancake
Rf 24/1.8 ???? 🤨
EF glass. Buy used EF glass if you are on a budget.
My wallet thanks you, my camera thanks you more!
the nifty fifty drop gave me a heart attack
I have the 35 50 16 85 and the 24-105 7.1. I will take the 24-105 7.1 over the 24-50
