Hmmm. As a dual Sony and M43 user I'm surprised that the later didn't get a mention (and please don't mention noise as often the insanely good IBIS means lower ISOs and possible shutter speeds but with modern NR software even if there is a little noise it's easy to remove). For video-centric shooters the new Pana G9ii (and there are other excelelnt Olympus and Panasonic-Leica camera for smaller budgets) is superb and although around $1,800 at the moment I'm sure used can be found around $1,500 squeezing into that budget limit. Add on that M43 are small, lightweight and cheaper than full frame lenses, whilst being of equal quality, and that's a compelling package.
I'd also add for those unaware, that f1.2 or f1.4 M43 lenses (generally way cheaper, smaller and lighter than their FF cousins) still collect that amount of light on an M43 camera, though the perceived DoF doubles. The DoF doubling can in itself can be a pro though for some shooters (more DoF at wider apertures) not a con (if you want bokeh, bokeh, bokeh). Clients want to see the background at shoots such as weddings, travel, cityscapes etc. and the M43 lenses will give you that whilst retaining the light gathering of fast lenses.

I would say that, yes, sensor size is important, but it's not as big of a deal as it might seem:
As you said, modern phones can capture amazing footage and they have at most a half-square centimeter sensor.
Everything that they can achieve with fancy automatic post-processing you can get too, and better, by dialing the right options in your camera or even shooting RAW and doing post-processing on a PC.
What I'm saying is to not sleep on smaller sensor mirrorless camera systems, even if you plan to start low and later upgrade to more professional stuff.
There are plenty of older but still very good Canon APS-C sensor cameras that you can get used for way less than $800 and still get amazing results from, especially if you use something like Magic Lantern instead of the stock firmware to remove the 30-minute limit and enable a lot of other settings useful for video making. Then, if you need it, you would still have plenty of options for amazing upgrades, from moderate to crazy expensive, without having to replace all your Canon APS-C lenses.
Another option that most would probably scoff at, but would actually give amazing results, is getting something like a Panasonic G9 (Mark 1) for around (or less than) $500. Yes, the M4/3 sensor would be smaller than an APS-C, but still way larger than what most cheap point-and-shoot cameras have and tens of times larger than what smartphones have.
For your $500 you would get: a fully weather-sealed body with a metal frame, 5-axis 6.5 stops in-body stabilization, 4K 60fps recording, dual UHS-II SD card slots, amazing autofocus with DFD, (obviously) mic-in, headphones-out and clean HDMI output, USB-C charging without the need to pull out the battery (even while the camera is in use and recording), and tons of other features.
The Micro Four Thirds system would also allow you to build a respectably sized array of high-quality lenses without having to rob a bank and, more importantly, to bring them with you on vacation without needing extra luggage just for them.
Then you could later upgrade to a G9 Mark II if you want to keep a good all-rounder camera with amazing video capabilities, an Olympus/OM Systems OM1 Mark II if your focus shifts towards photography (especially wildlife and/or travel photography), or, if you're really hellbent on video shooting, something like a Blackmagic Micro Studio or a Z Cam E2.
MFT cameras are also the easiest and best suited to be adapted to other lens systems, and while usually adapters lose you the ability to control autofocus, electronic aperture, and things like that, that isn't really an issue with videography as most pro lenses used in that field (like PL lenses) are completely manual.

I agree with 99.9 percent of this video other than not mentioning the A7IV and I only say that because as content creators you’ll inevitably want a decent photo camera as well as video and the A7IV is the perfect hybrid for that. It’s downsampled 4K from a 7K sensor renders some of the sharpest 4K footage you will find.

Honestly, a Nikon Z8 or Z9 would be a better hybrid camera. You get high res 45mp images from a high speed stacked BSI sensor as well as 4K 120fps and 8K 60 video, both of which can be recorded in 12bit RAW internally, while being weather resistant.

    Great video :)
I'm currently using BMPCC 6K as a main camera and I also wonder if there's any point in ever upgrading it to a RED or full-blown URSA. It pretty much does everything I need for a quarter of the RED Komodo price, the only thing it may lack from time to time is a global shutter sensor, but still you rarely pan the camera fast enough to make it a serious problem. And when I think of all the hassle and extra money it would take to additionally rig a Komodo (let alone a bigger RED with a camera body costing a few times more than my entire current film gear combined) I wonder if it's ever really worth it.
One good thing a full-blown film camera has (even a BMPCC 4K) is the video oriented workflow, as opposed to the video functions crammed within a photo camera. That itself was instantly refreshing after years of shooting with a DSLR, the intuitiveness of operation is incomparably better :D

Not including the Panasonic Lumix s5ii is crazy. The canon r8 doesn't even come close to what the lumix can do. The s5ii is an absolute beast...6k opengate, the best IBIS on the market in this priceclass, built in fans so overheating isn't even a thing, adjustable shutterangle, v-log and in camera LUTs. Such a feature packed workhorse you can get for about 1500 dollars. Not to mention that getting into videography on canons R system is probably the dumbest thing to do...no 3rd party lenses and the higher quality rf glass is nearly unafordable.

Also in term of budget for filming there is the FX30 ? and talking about top-notch video camera I believe FX3 deserves also to be mentioned.

You're not wrong at all, but I had to draw the line somewhere, it would be a pointless video If I recommended 20 cameras for people to just go and do more research on.
FX30 is great if you're already invested in sony but otherwise I think the average person get more value out of the r8. Don't get me wrong there are certain people where the fx30 is likely better but again I'm trying to approach in broad strokes without making it an hour long video.

  • @AesirViking

Got one more thought about the sensor sizes: I used to be highly fixated on full frame sensors when upgrading DSLR from an APS-C Nikon D7100 to a more professional D750 years ago. At some point, I realized all the major film cameras have an APS-C standard anyway (Super 35mm is much closer to this than to a still camera Full-Frame) and now I pretty much only shoot videos on S35/APS-C combo, with my B-cams being Nikon Z30 APS-C cameras :D this way I got an advantage of similar crop factors no matter which camera I use a lens with. I now only really care about a full-frame sensor if I have to crank up the fish-eye effect of my 14mm lens.

    • @MrPaulXavier
      @MrPaulXavier  10 месяцев назад +3

Fair perspective! I think for controlled shoots APS-C is totally fine but for run and gun people who might not always have the control over lighting and other factors... full frame will make their lives much easier.

I agree, it is such a solid camera at an such a good price for with it sharing the same sensor as the fx3 and a7siii with nifty ai features. It does have a couple draw backs that may be deal breakers for some. The single UHS-II SD card slot may deter those who worry about redundancy and the not wanting to risk the SD card failing on them. Also I am sure the ai features help out a lot, but I worry little about the compression rate killing a bit of the quality seeing that it can do 4:2:2 and if you like slowmo I think they had a firmware update a little while back or still planned to support 4k 120 especially running both I think I would prefer a cf-express card, but take this comment is based in slight ignorance since I don't own the zv-e1 and only mainly going off the specs from when it launched. I know it had an overheating issue when it came out, but I have seen some inexpensive 3rd party fans that pretty much fixed that issue. Overall it is still an insane amount of camera for sub 2500 new and it is designed for a specific audience and outside of the couple "maybe deal breakers" will fit any aspiring creators and will give an amazing image even for new creators. Great video here for new people looking to break into camera work. I think two honorable mentions just because how cheap you can get them used and great for hybrid shooters are the Nikon z6ii and the original Lumix s5 auto focus is just okay compared to Canon or Sony on those cameras, but pack some great video features like 4k 60(cropped though) and can shoot raw video with an external recorded. Defiantly a huge step up for Nikon who I would of never even looked at for video in the past. Sorry this comment ended up being longer than expected. Hopefully helps someone even just a little with making a camera choice.

Main competitor to Canon R8 is the Nikon Z5 which Z5 has new firmware updates with much improved focus tracking (which really sticks to subjects) and Z5 has IBIS in body stabilization, which R8 does not. Z5 has full size batteries, R8 has smaller batteries. Z5 has Flat Picture profile high dynamic range video which can be color graded and usable compared to Canon's C-Log. Z5 has tilt screen instead of vari angle screen but you could just add a small 5 inch monitor on top when you need to self vlog. In the end, R8 and Z5 are both good cameras in FF for good quality video. For the Nikon Z5, it is ideal to get a prime for low light or the small kit, but also get the Z 24-200mm VR lens which is made for video as it is stabilized and smooth zooming. (or get Z24-70mm F4 or Z28-75mm F2.8) In the end are you a Canon shooter, Sony or Nikon shooter. All good.

It has higher resolution than the A7S III so I can use it for photography. I bought the S5 II over the A7IV because the low light performance is so much better. Some have compared its low light performance to the A7S III and although it won't beat it, it holds its own all the way to the end. I also prefer the colors much more than the yellow green Sony default.

Hi can you help me please. I own a iPhone 14 Pro Max and a Intsta 360 Webcam and filming in 4K30 and in a very dark room with red lights and I film head shots at the moment for RUclips gaming and my pub gigs. But whatever I do the video always looks grainy or has noise. All I want is an easy point and shoot crystal clear in very low light video camera that can solo record in 4K60 HDR10 and rich colour for as long as I can oh and record audio too. I have a 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra with two separate 24TB SSD’s and Final Cut Pro X what camera do I need and if it’s expensive I’ll just save up. I’m disabled so it needs to be carer proof haha. I recently own a refurb m200 next to a 7dii , just to have a light photo camera on the go instead of a smartphone. Works great and it can adapt ef-s lenses , own just about all of them 😅
The thing is i am capturing videos of birds in bright daylight with chicks now in 4K on a 55-250mm stm (great video) lens but with the extra m200 apsc crop PLUS 4k crop this works perfect. 250mm becomes 640mm! So happy.
      Addendum:
I use a Canon adapter to mount ef-s lenses to the m200, this adapter has a screw for the tripod, so the camera / battery never get ehm .. screwed 😉 this works extremely well!!!

When creating live music performance video's I use my cellphone for the video, and the vocal and guitar sound goes through my Mackie Onyx 12 mixer to my Sonar Studio recording software on my computer. I put everything together afterwards with my Pinnacle Studio editing software. The sound end result is very, very good and clear. I wonder if there are any of these camera's that can independently do the sound results as good.

I want to start streaming my DJ sets and I'm looking for an affordable and also a good camera to use. I started recording my session practices with a a Gopro 10 but it cashed, I don't know what happened but it doesn't turn on again. I spent too much time trying everything and watching all the videos on RUclips and nothing work, the manufacture guarantee is expired as well so I'm done with it and decide to get a good camera for my streaming's in a rage of $500 usd or so which is my budget. I use OBS studio and a Focusrite 212 as an audio interface. Which camera would you recommend me to start doing a professional stream in my studio and outside? Also keeping in mind the camera overheat.

I've compared using 4k 10bit SLOG3 4:2:2 on the Sony to just regular 4k30 on the iPhone 13 Pro, and the main differences show when there's a lot of dynamic range going on.
For flatter looking scenes it's harder to tell. Scenes like a white bathroom or a snowy field.
What I notice more is the focal length differences.
I definitely prefer the Sony, but the extra weight, complexity, and file sizes can make it easier to wanna grab the iPhone at times haha @@santiagovillegas2932

I love Canon, simple lineup, easy to distinguish between versions, really good color - but an R6mkII and an RF 24-70mm F2.8 would set me back 4.5k compared to the 3.5k for a Sony A7IV with a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8.
